Default It's Official - 'Lost in Space’ TV Reboot in Development

Just announced in the last few days, another (this time serious), reboot of Irwin Allen's classic Sci-Fi TV Series, Lost in Space, is in line for a new TV series makeover.

    The Original TV Series Cast, from left to right;
Penny Robinson (Angela Cartwright), Major Donald West (Mark Goddard); Judy Robinson (Marta Kristen); B-9 Robot (inside was actor, Bob May and voiced by Dick Tufeld); Dr. Zachary Smith (the late Jonathan Harris); Prof. John Robinson (the late Guy Williams); in front; Dr. Maureen Robinson (June Lockhart); Will Robinson (Bill Mumy).

First aired in 1965, (in Black & White), the series played for three years, beating STAR TREK in the original ratings. The show began quite seriously but over time became more campy, featuring the adventures of America's first family in space, the Robinsons. (The first appearance of a space-faring Robinson family was in a comic book published by Gold Key Comics, The Space Family Robinson, who travelled about - also lost in space - aboard Space Station One in December 1962).

Intended to be a five-year journey to colonize Alpha Centauri, the Robinson's futuristic flying saucer-shaped spaceship, the Jupiter 2, takes off from Earth in the (then) near future (1997) but is sabotaged by the nefarious Dr. Zachary Smith, who gets trapped aboard on liftoff, and is ultimately responsible for the Robinsons becoming "Lost in Space".

The Robinson's futuristic, atomic-powered "flying saucer" spaceship, the Jupiter 2 from the original TV Series, (which grew in size with each successive series).

A spectacular SFX movie remake (starring Gary Oldman as a very evil Dr. Smith) in 1998 did well enough at the box office, but most of the fans were left disappointed.

John Woo made a TV pilot in 2003 (with no Dr Smith) but it was not among the network's series pick-ups confirmed later that year and differed drastically from the original story line. (Can be viewed here in several parts on YouTube)

Here's hoping the latest offering will more closely follow the "darker" first few black and white episodes the fans prefer.

(Just type in, "New Lost in Space" to Google and you'll come up with a multitude of entries - here is just one).

Quote ‘Lost in Space’ TV Reboot in Development with ‘Dracula Untold’ Writers
by Kevin Fitzpatrick October 9, 2014 10:35 PM

Time and again we’ve seen the classic ‘Lost in Space’ given the reboot treatment, from the 1998 big-screen version to a John Woo-directed TV take in the early 2000s, so what’s one more? The Robinsons will pack up and head for the stars once more, as Legendary TV has begun development of a new ‘Lost in Space’ series with the writers behind ‘Dracula Untold.’

Per Deadline, Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless will write the new ‘Lost in Space’ TV project, producing with Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment, holder of the original rights. For those out of the pop culture loop, the original 1960s series saw 1997 future family the Robinsons heading into space for a 5-year mission, before the evil Dr. Smith sabotaged the mission and sent the family off-course.

Crewed by John and Maureen Robinson, their children Penny, Judy and Will, as well as Major Don West, Doctor Smith and “Robot,” the original series aired on CBS for a grand total of 83 episodes over 3 seasons. In addition to the 1998 film, an early attempt to revive the series as an NBC TV-movie, The WB filmed a 2003 pilot for a new ‘Lost in Space,’ directed by John Woo, though it never went to series.

Well, what do you think? Would you be interested in a new ‘Lost in Space’ series, should it go to production?

I also hope they consult with Bill Mumy (who played the young Will Robinson). Bill has probably been LIS's most ardent supporter over the years and penned an entire graphic novel (360 pages), LOST IN SPACE - "Voyage to the Bottom of the Soul", set several years after the TV series finished and continued the adventures of the Robinsons on Alpha Centauri, in a somewhat more serious light than the original.

But yeah, new directors love to change things

Update - The New LOST IN SPACE TV Series will be from Netflix

A new 'Lost In Space' television series is being made

Fifty years after the original premiered, a reboot has been announced. We list a few things we'd like to see (and hear) in the new show.
Posted: November 23, 2015, 12:07PM By: MeTV Staff

    http://www.metv.com/stories/a-new-lo...-is-being-made

    Danger, Will Robinson!

Everyone's favorite robot is about to be rebooted. Again. It should better than the 1998 movie, which turned B-9 into a broad-shouldered, four-arm tank.

Irwin Allen's classic family sci-fi adventure will be remade for Netflix, after a reported bidding war. The new series will be executive produced by a team of veterans including writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, director Neil Marshall (who steered arguably the most exciting, epic episodes of Game of Thrones) and producer Kevin Burns. For Burns, this is a passion project years in the making. The producer attempted a TV movie around the turn of the millennium, not to mention a reboot series a few years later that was filmed by Hong Kong director John Woo. Working with Allen's widow, Burns looks to revive the TV pioneer's projects from the 1960s.

Lost In Space recently celebrated its 50th birthday. There is no word on when the series will arrive on the streaming service. Perhaps around the time the new Star Trek sets off on its own streaming missions?

As we await further details, here are some things we'd like to see in the new series.

    1) A cool robot that pays homage to the original

Designing a fresh B-9 is perhaps the greatest challenge for the new team. The look of the robot will immediately set the tone and either lure or turn off fans of the franchise. Sadly, Robert Kino****a, the original designer and legend of onscreen robots, passed away last year. Finding the right balance between homage and modern will be crucial.

    2) A conflicted Dr. Smith

Originally, the Smith character was a saboteur. As Lost In Space turned to a more lighthearted and (literally) colorful tone in its second season, Smith became less of a threat. Considering the darker moods of modern television, we expect Dr. Smith to be painted as villainous again. We just hope that he's not an outright bad guy. (Assuming, of course, they have a Dr. Smith character. But they have to, right?)

    3) Some nods to the outlandish aliens

Season two turned the adventure show into something more akin to a live-action Saturday morning cartoon. Growing up, we savored both styles. As mentioned above, we expect a more serious take on the story. However, that doesn't mean the creators can't mine some of the wilder ideas. There can be an intelligent twist on the space Vikings, space pirates, android duplicates, dragons, miniature robots and Morbus.

    4) A John Williams theme.

Certainly, the composer will be busy with the slew of Star Wars movies on the horizon, but surely he can take some time to revisit one of his great early works?

What do you think? What would you like to see in a new Lost In Space?

Below - a Jan 2015 interview with the surviving original cast - absent Mark Goddard, (and Space Mom, June Lockhart still looks amazing at 90 years of age!)

They run episodes of Lost in Space on a TV station in my area. LOL... It looks exactly done by the people who did Star Trek but isn't nearly as good. I was 7 when it came out. Some how I remember it being better back then. Well... Let's just say at least the errors music help up.

    Time for some Updates...

Lost in Space: Netflix Remake Casts Falling Skies Alum as Judy Robinson

By Michael Ausiello / September 16 2016, 1:49 PM PST

    http://tvline.com/2016/09/16/lost-in...judy-robinson/

Netflix’s Lost in Space remake has locked in its first cast member, tapping Falling Skies actress Taylor Russell to play daughter Judy, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The role of John and Maureen’s eldest child was originated by Marta Kristen in the ’60s series, and later played by Heather Graham in the 1998 feature film.

Russell’s other notable credit is Lifetime’s Unauthorized Saved by the Bell Story, in which she played Lark Voorhies.

The 10-episode, Legendary TV-produced family drama/sci-fi adventure, which was formally ordered in June and is set to premiere in 2018, will take its cues from the original series and follow the Robinson family as they are forced to come together in a time of crisis. Stranded light years from their intended destination, they find themselves battling a strange new alien environment and their own personal demons.

The project hails from writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter), with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) set as showrunner.

“The original series so deftly captured both drama and comedy, and that made it very appealing to a broad audience,” said Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP of original content, back in June. “The current creative team’s reimagining of the series for Netflix is sure to appeal to both fans who fondly remember the original and to create a new generation of enthusiasts around the world.”

Danger, Will Robinson! Netflix's Lost in Space TV series has cast its Dr. Smith

    Nathalie Caron

    http://www.blastr.com/2016-11-23/dan...t-its-dr-smith

Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space TV series has finally found its Dr. Smith, but there’s a tiny little catch: they've pulled a gender swap.

Actress Parker Posey (Superman Returns) has been cast in the role of the duplicitous Dr. Smith in the remake of Irwin Allen’s 1965 classic series. The role of Dr. Zachary Smith was previously brought to life by Jonathan Harris in the original series and by Gary Oldman in the 1998 movie. There’s no news as to the first name Parker Posey's Dr. Smith will have, but it's possible they'll go with a female-sounding variation of the character's original name. Or not.

The Legendary TV series follows the Robinsons, who are forced to come together when they find themselves stranded light-years away from their intended destination. They have to battle not only their new alien surroundings but also their personal demons. The original series was set 30 years in the future (in 1997) and revolved around an attempt by the U.S. to colonize deep space by sending one single family on a five-and-a-half year journey to another planet. That is, until enemy agent Dr. Zachary Smith sabotages the mission, causing the ship to veer off course and essentially becoming lost in space. Oops!

Netflix’s upcoming Lost in Space remake is the brainchild of Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless (Dracula Untold, Last Witch Hunter) and stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails) as astrophysicist and family patriarch John Robinson, Molly Parker (Deadwood) as his wife and brilliant aerospace engineer Maureen Robinson, Taylor Russell (Falling Skies) as Judy Robinson and Max Jenkins (Sense8) as Will Robinson. Zack Estrin (Prison Break) will serve as showrunner for the 10-episode TV series, set for a 2018 premiere.

    What do you think of:

    * the casting of Parker Posey as Dr. Smith and Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson?
    * Dr Smith's gender swap?

The narrator in the above video isn't quite correct about "no kitsets" of the Jupiter 2; over the years, several have been made available and are still big sellers today, complete with highly detailed interiors and working electronics, along with models of the Chariot, Robot & Space Pod etc.

One of the "premier" models is available from renowned model manufacturer, Moebius, with their 1/35 scale Jupiter 2 (below).

One fan, John Antonellis, went so far as to make his own full size working replica of the Chariot. The original was actually based on the chassis of a 1965 Thiokol Snow Cat – everything above the treads was designed and built expressly for the show based on ideas that scientists and engineers had at the time for what would be needed to explore a human-habitable planet. (Star Trek later labeled it a “Class M” planet). It was also amphibious.

It will be interesting to see what the "ship" will look like for the new series; the fans hope it will be a revamped Jupiter 2 saucer based on the original, altho many consider the interior sets of the time to be "way ahead of their time" even today. The Jupiter 2 set was then the most expensive ever built for a TV Series (even more than the various sets for the original STAR TREK).

Six years ago, a fan-produced web series was planned and a very skilled artist by the name of "Haselius" (pseudonym), redesigned it into a much larger ship while retaining the original look and style. (He also produced the highly detailed 3-D rendering of the original Jupiter 2 in the OP). Unfortunately, LIS's owners stopped the web series from happening unlike the many professionally produced fan videos of STAR TREK.

Here's the larger redesigned Jupiter 2 for the Web Series (and you'll find a few more examples of it on YouTube and cutaway interiors on Google images):

And here's a terrific 3-D walkthrough of the orginal Jupiter 2, rendered in Sketchup for those who are wondering where everything "fitted" (complete with the original series soundtrack):

And this model showing it "unpacked"

    Yes please, I'd like one!

    Update time...

Lost in Space (2018 TV series)

Lost in Space is an upcoming American science fiction web television reboot of the 1965 series of the same name, following the adventures of a family of pioneering space colonists whose spaceship veers off-course. It is written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless and will consist of 10 episodes. The series is produced by Legendary Television, Synthesis Entertainment, and Applebox, with Zack Estrin serving as showrunner.

On Feb 4, 2018, Kevin Burns revealed that the all new Lost in Space is scheduled to be released in Mid April 2018 on Netflix.

    Premise

In the year 2046, The Robinson Family and the spaceship Jupiter 2, one of several Jupiter ships, encounters a rip in spacetime and crashes on an unknown planet. Stranded light years from their intended destination, the Robinsons and other colonists marooned with them battle a strange new alien environment and their own personal demons as they attempt to leave the planet. (This concept appears to embody some of the story elements from the earlier 2003 John Woo Pilot which didn't make it as a TV series - see beginning of this thread).

    Cast and characters
    Main

Toby Stephens as John Robinson, the expedition commander.
Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson, a fearless and brilliant aerospace engineer who makes the decision to bring her family to space for a chance at a new life on a better world.
Ignacio Serricchio as Don West, a roughneck smuggling luxury goods on the side who finds in the Robinsons the family he never thought he would find.
Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson, John and Maureen's eldest child from an earlier marriage.
Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson, one of the Robinson children.
Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson, the youngest Robinson child.
Parker Posey as a female Dr. Smith

The Robot also appears in the series in a modified form.

    Recurring

Raza Jaffrey as Victor, a well groomed, educated and officious man with a sense of entitlement. Victor has been a career builder and politician from a young age. There is arrogance and impatience about him. All this masks the underlying fear that he'll one day be found out — that he isn’t quite good enough.[9]

    Episodes

Neil Marshall will direct several episodes of the season.[10 in total]

    Production Development

In October 2014, it was announced that Legendary Television was developing a new reboot of Lost in Space and had hired Dracula Untold screenwriting duo Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless to pen the new series.[11] In November 2015, Netflix landed the project.[12][13] On June 29, 2016, Netflix officially ordered a full 10 episode season of Lost in Space, with Zack Estrin as executive producer and showrunner. Sazama, Sharpless, Kevin Burns, Jon Jashni, Neil Marshall, and Marc Helwig also serve as executive producers.[14]

Toby Stephens had this to say about the new show: "It’s a very clever, modern reworking of a great story. Lost In Space is Swiss Family Robinson in space, so it was a story that existed before Lost In Space. The fundamental story is that it’s a family that is lost in a difficult, life-threatening situation and how it challenges them and brings them closer together. That is essentially what the story of this is, it’s just the context is a lot more modern. It's a more modern take on the '60s version. If you look at it now, it's charming, but it seems so innocent. Whereas this is a version that is for our time. I’m hoping it will still have humour and humanity in it, but it has obviously gotta be for a modern audience."

    Filming

Production on the series began in January 2017, in Vancouver, British Columbia, and concluded in June 2017.

It's here... the first "Official Trailer" for the upcoming, reimagined LOST IN SPACE TV Series.

If this is first impressions of visually sticking to "canon", you're going to be disappointed, because it's not, (which isn't to say it won't be a winner). Well, looks ain't everything! The Jupiter 2, Chariot & Robot are nothing like the iconic originals, not to mention some radical changes to a few of the characters. LIS fans of the sixties' TV series are likely to be initially "annoyed"; the Robot looks like a robotised Grim Reaper - although it does say, "Danger, Will Robinson" in a kinda creepy way - it's going to be difficult to love it with the affection we held for the original, but this Robot is not part of the Robinson family's crew; it's an artificial life form they discover on an alien planet. As for the "other vehicles"? The Jupiter 2 looks like a cross between the LIS movie version & the Millennium Falcon... (or maybe a bit of STAR TREK DS9's USS Defiant); the Chariot?... hmmmm... yeah, the creative team could have perhaps done a lot better in that regard.

Ummm... a "homage" to the original? Only if you consider the title, character's names, and that a duck looks like a squirrel. But even the campy original series was based on The Swiss Family Robinson (in space).

So let's discard the initial "look" in terms of similarities to the original props. (My suggestion? - Forget comparing the original series completely and start with a clean sheet of paper - we could be in for a treat! ).

A really good TV Series (or remake) is about telling a really good story. We've seen it done successfully with BATTLESTAR GALACTICA & the recent STAR TREK DISCOVERY. No, it's not our Dad's LOST IN SPACE... it could be even better.

Decide for yourselves and fingers crossed, when the series is aired on Netflix on 13 April, it won't disappoint.

    Can't wait!...

Bill Mumy, the actor who played Will Robinson in the original 60's TV series, (and one of it's most enthusiastic fans), has given the new reimagined LOST IN SPACE series the thumbs up, tweeting (scroll down a bit...):

Gonna be Boss! I’ve seen it. The new series is truly in the “mood” of the original classic first few episodes of “my” Lost in Space. The cast, crew and creative team are all terrific.

Thanks especially to Kevin Burns for staying on top of it all for so many years and sticking to his vision. I strongly suggest you check the new series out with open minds and open hearts, cuz it has heart!

    http://au.ign.com/articles/2018/03/0...lost-in-spaces

The upcoming series just released a trailer which seems to indicate that, surprisingly enough, it has a lot in common with the original.

    By Witney Seibold

March 6th was the 50th anniversary of the final episode of the initial run of Lost in Space, which originally aired from 1965 to 1968. This is also the date when Netflix, in a coup of marketing timing, elected to release the trailer for their new rebooted version of Lost in Space, which will drop on April 13th. This trailer is, of course, all that general audiences currently know about the new Lost in Space, but it certainly contains enough substance to offer sci-fi fans and old-school TV geeks fodder for endless speculation and conjecture. So let’s take a look at how this new Lost in Space looks when compared to the older versions?

The original Lost in Space, in case you're unfamiliar, followed the future adventures of the Robinson family, as they quested to find a home after their spacecraft was thrown off course by a creepy stowaway. The cast included Guy Williams, June Lockhart from Lassie, future member of Barnes & Barnes Bill Mumy, Marta Kristen, Angela Cartwright, Mark Goddard, and the indelible Jonathan Harris as the menacing and over-the-top stowaway Dr. Smith. Bob May suited up as the show's boxy robot friend (who was voiced by Dick Tufeld).

The premise of Lost in Space was based in sci-fi, of course, but the show's creator Irwin Allen was clearly inspired by the pioneering tenacity of Johann David Wyss' 1812 novel The Swiss Family Robinson, depicting the same sort of frontier life as the novel, only transposed to distant planets. Indeed, the series started its life as a 1962 comic book called Space Family Robinson.

The new Netflix show has the exact same premise and even the same characters. Maxwell Jenkins plays the young Will Robinson, Toby Stephen and Molly Parker play John and Maureen, Dr. Smith is played by the amazing Parker Posey, and the robot is now a much more detailed and elaborate creature with a mysterious glowing face.

It seems it was a wise choice to retain the exact premise as the 1965 original for a reboot. Being lost in space is something that feels universal, can easily be mined for stories, and allows for the characters to constantly explore and reevaluate their relationships. Lost in Space was about the strength of the family unit, and how, no matter what, they would have to work together to survive. It was a hopeful show, even if it did frequently dip into camp. Lost in Space was, to put it bluntly, a pretty corny show. Don't get me wrong – it's terrific. But the scenarios and cheap sets and dated costumes and hairdos put it well beyond Star Trek and Space 1999 in terms of it being distinctly of its time. Seriously, watch the episode wherein the robot meets the famous Robby the Robot from Forbidden Planet. It's spectacular.

Given the tone we might extract from the trailer, this new show seems determined to excise all semblance of camp from the original. This is not a series that seems to be paying distant Olympian homage to the original (like Star Wars) or milking audiences with nostalgia imagery (almost all reboots). This would seem to be a reboot that finally utilizes that word correctly, using the same premise and starting fresh, seemingly unconcerned with grabbing an older audience (other than a mellow quotation of John Williams' famous theme song in the trailer). The nostalgia for Lost in Space is, after all, thin on the ground. Those who watched reruns on late night cable are now past the valuable youth demographic, and even those familiar with the 1998 feature film are now parents. In short, they're less beholden to repeating mythology or minute details.

So what can we say about the new show's tone? It looks like something that we have been missing in a lot of modern TV: It looks like a lighthearted adventure show. The makers of reboots often tend to arc frustratingly toward either the high-octane or the grim-n-gritty. The 1998 Lost in Space feature film is a perfect example of the former. The makers of the film took a bright, simple show, and poured gasoline on it. They gave the Robinsons and their robot a “cool,” slick redesign, they upped the explosions, and they hyper-charged the rockets. There were more guns, more explosions, more action, more CGI critters, and more sex appeal. Needless to say, it's an awful, awful movie. Of course, the annoying CGI creature Blawp was no less annoying than Debbie the Bloop from the original.

Although working with updated special effects, and no doubt working with long-form modern TV storytelling, the new Lost in Space is communicating a bright, almost exciting tone. Like the original, it seems to be about surviving on an unfamiliar frontier, exploring a world they don't know, cautiously trying to survive. And while there will doubtless be plenty of action-packed escape scenarios, this show clearly isn't about war or shooting or the breakdown of diplomacy. This is all communicated through the lighting, the music, and the sense of, well, discovery. Lost in Space seems to have the tone that Star Trek: Discovery is so painfully missing (even if the “Date Announcement” teaser from a few weeks back seemed to imply that the Robinsons had left Earth behind because humankind had made the planet uninhabitable).

As for the new look, I like the update. The new Jupiter 2 evokes the flying saucer shape of the original while still looking like a futuristic vessel, and the updating of the robot to be a complex human-shaped wad of living metal (and apparently alien) seems like a logical progression, making it a calm, inscrutable companion rather than a large boxy sidekick pet.

The preview seems to be offering audiences an exciting, refreshingly simple show with a premise that may be distantly familiar to new audiences, but will still function well in a modern entertainment complex. I didn't expect to, but I'm looking forward to it.

Lost in Space Review: Netflix Reboots Family Adventure as Lost, But in Space (Spoiler Alert)

    TV Review Grade B+

Imagine a group of individuals — some who, flashbacks reveal, aren’t what they seem — uniting to survive after being mysteriously stranded in a strange world….

Yes, Netflix’s Lost in Space is almost as much a reworking of ABC’s Lost as it is a spiffy reboot of the 1960s series that made “Danger, Will Robinson!” part of the classic-TV lexicon. But standing on its own, does it soar straight away or struggle to take off?

Described as a “reimagining” of the Irwin Allen-produced CBS serial, and with Zack Estrin (Prison Break) serving as showrunner, the new Lost in Space (premiering Friday, April 13) is set 30 years in the future, where the Robinson family’s bid to be part of a colonization of the planet Alpha Centauri is derailed by, well, a series of unfortunate events. Crash-landing on a planet situated “trillions of light years” away from Earth (and one where frozen tundras apparently butt up against lush forests), parents Maureen and John (played by House of Cards‘ Molly Parker and Black Sails‘ Toby Stephens), along with kids Judy, Penny and Will, are met with episodic crises that test their collective mettle.

In the course of enduring assorted odysseys, the Robinsons meet Parker Posey’s Dr. Smith, who, as the character briefly did in the ’60s series, harbors a hidden agenda. Rounding out the ensemble are Don West (Bones‘ Ignacio Serricchio), a charming fellow castaway who strikes sparks with brainy Judy, and the robot that Will, during a time of crisis, runs into and (as these things typically go) strongly bonds with.

Visually, Lost in Space is stunning, borderline breathtaking at times. (Money was spent.) The world the Robinsons find themselves in is richly realized and tactile, whether they’re spelunking into an arctic pool or clambering onto the branches of majestic trees. Their saucer-ish ship, the Jupiter 2, is convincingly sturdy (as it will need to be!) and not overly festooned with delicate, Apple Store-style gizmos. Even their “Chariot”/ATV is practically designed and nearly of our time.

As a fan of the original Lost in Space, which was conceived as an out-of-this-world Swiss Family Robinson — and realizing this redo would be far less campy (Oh the pain, how could it not be?) — I cued up the first five episodes made available for critics wanting to be blown away. And I frequently was. The cast is solid, the FX are top-shelf and the survival-related drama comes at a steady pace, with some episodes (the pilot included) delivering no less than white-knuckle sequences.

There are, though, aspects that occasionally bog down the otherwise rollicking adventure.

As alluded to by the Lost comparison, some characters come with a lotta baggage; in fact, one might think that added weight is what threw the Jupiter 2 off course. It’s no spoiler to say that unlike the parents played 50 years ago by June Lockhart and Guy Williams, this Maureen and John have complicated marital issues that arise again and again… and again. So though she is well-played by Parker, Maureen can be a bit of a buzzkill, while husband John in turn suffers, dismissed as he often is as a deadbeat dad. Who am I rooting for…?

Of the kids, Judy is featured (and Taylor Russell shines) in the early, peril-filled showcases, while Mina Sundwall’s Penny shoulders the series’ sparse spurts of comic relief — very much a teen prone to rebellion or the scarfing of precious creme-filled sandwich cookies. (So light-hearted is her vibe, she sometimes seems to be in a different show.) As Will, Max Jenkins accomplishes exactly what he needs to, portraying a lad who sees the humanity in a robot that others are inclined to side-eye.

The portrayal of Dr. Smith is a curious and ultimately captivating one. At first, I was like, “OK, Parker Posey is doing Parker Posey.” But as the shady shrink’s flashbacks started unspooling, wonderfully dark, devious (and occasionally hysterical) edges revealed themselves. And I was sold. It’s scene-stealing stuff, punctuated by a mane that seems Aqua Net’d in a wind tunnel. Serricchio’s Don starts off as a bit of a cipher/goof, though by Episode 5 he gets fleshed out, his own “secret life” revealed.

“Robot” in his native state is an original and eye-popping display of CGI, articulated with myriad limbs sprouting from multiple directions and wearing mood ring-like lights for a face. Once he adopts humanoid form (and is played by someone in a costume), Robot loses a little a bit of his specialness, though the “whirrr” that underscores his every swivel is a nice, sometimes creepy touch.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Replacing the original series’ Dr. Smith-dictated camp with slick visuals and heavy doses of drama, the new Lost in Space is a thrilling ride.

Ooops... sorry Cider, he's not "Robbie" (or "Robby"), (... it's a common misconception ...) . LIS's robot was just called, "Robot".

Altho it appeared in the original LIS TV series twice, "Robby" is from the 1956 film, "Forbidden Planet".

Both Robots were designed by the same Art Director, the late Robert Kinosh1ta.

Here are the two robots side-by-side, the original LIS version on the left, Forbidden Planet's "Robby" on the right.

Lost in Space: Watch the Netflix thriller's opening credits

Ready to see the opening of Netflix’s new sci-fi drama Lost in Space? EW has the show’s credits sequence exclusively below.

James Hibberd April 04, 2018 AT 12:26 PM EDT

The credits bridge the 1960s original series and the new reboot by showing a montage of images from the U.S. space program and families over the decades, culminating with a glimpse into the show’s own not-too-distant future.

Series composer Christopher Lennertz explains how he employed legendary composer John Williams’ iconic theme from the original series: “I wanted to tease the show’s premise with a hint of the Alpha Centauri program theme, then a full statement of the new Lost In Space theme, followed by a triumphant finish that showcased Williams’ original theme from season 3 that people are so familiar with,” he said. “It was such an honor to be able to incorporate such a classic melody from the man who made me fall in love with film music from the very beginning. Zack and all the producers wanted the musical language of the Title sequence to set up the score for the rest of the story, and hopefully, we did just that. It’s a big story with family and adventure at the very heart. I tried to be grand and heroic, with a nod to exploration, and a hint of nostalgia. I hope it resonates with fans of the show, both old and new.”

The Robinsons — led by stars Toby Stephens (Black Sails) and Molly Parker (Deadwood) — is one of hundreds of families chosen for a colonization mission that goes horribly wrong when their ship is struck by an unknown calamity. They escape to an unknown Earth-type planet and struggle to survive, and soon discover they are not alone. The show is based on the original 1963 series that ran for three seasons

Lost in Space consists of 10 episodes and premieres April 13. Legendary Television and Lakeshore will be releasing the soundtrack on the same day.

Meet Parker Posey’s Gender-Flipped Dr. Smith in New Trailer for Netflix’s Lost In Space
    by Teresa Jusino | 5:48 pm, April 6th, 2018

    https://www.themarysue.com/parker-po...lost-in-space/

One of the biggest changes in Netflix’s reboot of the classic 1960s sci-fi show Lost in Space is in the role of the duplicitous Dr. Smith, who was originally played by a man (Jonathan Harris), but will now be a female character played by the fabulous Parker Posey. Check out the trailer Netflix released to introduce us to the new Dr. Smith above.

What I love already is that, in this trailer, we already see the show passing the Bechdel-Wallace test as two named, female characters talk to each other about something other than a man. After all, there’s plenty to talk about on a space mission gone wrong. Even better, Dr. Smith has the potential to be a really great, nuanced villain, or at least an anti-hero, and it’s always nice to see those parts played by women.

I’ve gotta say, though, I’m a little put off by the dialogue in this trailer. Robinson matriarch, Maureen (Molly Parker) asks Dr. Smith, “I was wondering how you deal with it? Being the keeper of all those secrets.” Smith replies, “You have to find the place inside where you put things you don’t want anyone else to know. Where it can’t hurt you or anyone else. It’s just…part of the job.”

So…you deal with keeping secrets by…finding the place inside you were the secrets go? Yeesh. Had that dialogue not been cut in an exciting way for this trailer, it would’ve been even worse. Still, I have hope for this show. Posey and Parker are amazing actresses, and I dig what I’ve seen in prior trailers.
