Default How to deal with TV Licence Goons

    Good evening one and all.

For everyone living in the UK I was settling a debate with a friend earlier on, in regards to the current farce that is the TV Licence. An utter Joke. (for non UK Members) Basically for the right to watch BBC channels in the UK you have to pay a stupid amount of money to obtain a licence that you are not lawfully obliged to pay.

One must simply tell the Goon in the door that you are revoking his implied right of access. get this on film and they cower away like babies.

For tips on how to do it, have a look here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfHRhXW1hno

Why would someone would want to fund a pedophile ring corporation I will never know

    Check it out..

This is a tad off topic because I totally get how intrusive it is for these goons to come to the door but I am floored by this whole thing.

    What a bizarre ritual.

In the USA the TV airways are free but TV by cable/ satellite is billed directly from the company. There are no goon squads coming around.

I am a bit confused, are you saying that they want 145.50 to receive the broadcast over the airways?

What about satellite or cable TV?

I am speechless if I understand this correctly. You pay the equivalent of $229 US dollars for the right to watch regular TV over the airways?

Correction: Not 'you' specifically, I meant 'UK citizens'.

Although it was not as expensive they used to charge you a fee for having a television set (and even radio) alone in the Netherlands.
But they abandoned that some decades ago ... it's a truly medieval way of working and it shows how compliant people used to be.

I watched some of the public announcements on YouTube about making sure people pay their TV licensing fees. Even for the people paying the fee, talk about psychological warfare.....holy crap!

Ridiculous isn't it. Over a £100 a year just to ''own'' a TV set, that how the BBC is ran without ever using commercials. what a joke!

I've never thought of it like that, you are spot on in saying it showed how compliant people used to be.

I watch BBC -I pay the requested sum. They wish to sell- I wish to pay my bills. T V without continuous ads is rather nice. Paedophilia is not exclusive to the United Kingdom, it's just we are honest open and determined to wash this laundry in front of the world. I dare say there are as many paedophiles per head of population in the BBC as there are in the rest of the world.

I seriously believe you do not need it especially if you have a computer.

I don't live in UK, but if it depends on me, BBC would broke, because I have a TV set that I actually don't remember the last time I turned it on.

Maybe it was in February or March of this year...

I cancelled my tv licence ages ago, you are only paying for live broadcast, so if you don't watch live broadcast only on demand or catch up you don't have to pay, the sooner the BBC bites the dusk the better we will all be, British Bull**** Corporation...

Just get rid of the TV. Personally, there is nothing that urges me to sit down and stare at social engineering programs they put on even if it was free. A useful tip though if you do like watching it is if you connect a PC to a TV so that it isn't receiving a live broadcast and you can find whatever programs you like on the internet for free anyway.

Just for clarification for those outside the UK...

The UK TV licence funds the BBC. This means all the many BBC national and local radio stations, all the TV channels and the BBC website, because the BBC does not carry advertising and the licence funds its operation. I'm not trying to justify it, but those are the facts.

None of this money goes to the commercial radio or TV broadcasters, who are obviously funded entirely by the commercials. None on the money from these commercial broadcasters goes to the BBC.

Historically a radio licence funded the BBC in the 1920s when it first started broadcasting radio. At the time the UK government saw the chaotic commercial radio operating in the US at the time, and decided the public would be better served when commercial interests were not part of the broadcasting scene.

These days the TV licence (the radio licence was abolished in the 1970s) is an anachronism. Even if you don't watch BBC TV, you still need a TV licence to watch commercial channels, although you don't need one if you never watch any live-as-broadcast TV and only watch time-shifted programmes via the internet. You only need one licence per household, regardless of the number of TVs.

You still need a licence even if:
You have a satellite dish but only watch non-UK TV
You do not have a TV but watch live programmes ('live' means at the same time as broadcast) via the internet including those form another country

The position is becoming untenable and will probably be abolished in the BBC's next charter renewal in 2017 when funding may be some sort of direct or indirect tax that you will then have to pay if you have a TV or not!

    Nick

What amazes me is that they call it a license ... a permit would seem more appropriate.
Or am I confused as a non-native English speaker?

Good point, although it has always been called a "licence". Maybe "permit" sounded too restrictive in the 1920s.

There may also be subtleties between permit and licence in UK/US English, not least the spelling; "licence" the noun, and "license" the verb in UK English.

Why get rid of the tv when you can do so much with, there is more to the use of tv, without watching cable/satellite/dish.
Why do folk think that if one has a tv, that it is only being use for one thing?
