    Default “Significant Variation” Found in Skulls From Pre-Contact Peru

    Quote RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA—It had long been thought that there was very little skeletal variation among the pre-Columbian peoples in the New World, based upon a sample of individuals from the Yauyos people of the central Peruvian highlands. But anthropologists from North Carolina State University, the University of Oregon, and Tulane University evaluated the facial features of 507 skulls from seven pre-Columbian peoples from Peru, and found significant differences between all of them. “And our work shows that the Yauyos had facial features that were very different even from other peoples in the same region. This raises questions about any hypothesis that rests in part on the use of the Yauyos sample as being representative of all South America,” Ann Ross of North Carolina State University told Eureka Alert. The scientists found that the farther apart the groups lived from each other, the less they looked alike. “Next we want to compare variation across Latin America, to see if we can identify patterns that suggest biological relationships, which could be indicative of migration patterns,” Ross said.

    Skywizard, amazing find --

    the ridges above the upper Canines (teeth) on the lefthand skull (the wider one) suggest a stronger bite. also the canines are extremely large, as are the other teeth, but notice that the canines and canine ridges in the bone above (!) are quite large; this individual has exceptional strength in its mouth;

    the next major difference I saw was the absolute huge width of the skull on the one with the large canines; like a dolphin, it seems to have something "extra" inside -- scary; maybe to do with hunting? i.e. throwing spears, firing arrows, maybe running after the prey?

    the third difference was that the skull on the right had both the teeth of an omnivore/vegetable eating human AND more side-ward facing eyes, which is common to prey animals like deer and game birds....

    the skull with the big teeth and canine ridges and wide brain also has extremely foward-facing eyes, extremely binocular vision;

    the closest thing I can think of is an Owl, whose eyes are fixed (!) and forward facing for maximum focusing.

    this human likely had an extremely flexible (and strong!!! strong) neck. it's possible given what little we can see in this picture that the human with the more predatory features might not have walked entirely upright;

    apes and gorillas have a definite leaning gait and a completely different neck than humans... we don't know what Yeti/Bigfoot has, and we certainly don't know how ancient people looked either...

    my guess is that ancient people looked fuzzy and indistinct like they do today because weaker/tastier people were way too smart/scared to get close to them.

    I wish there had been more details on the skulls shown. I suppose it might be a result of growing up with a dentist step father but what jumped out at me immediately was how absolutely perfect the teeth on the left skull are. Such perfect teeth are, I would guess, a clue that whoever this person was they were not living in primitive conditions, as the teeth on the right skull indicate. Those teeth on the left skull have been braced, filed or something. Not a single chip or twisted tooth, all lines are near perfect. Or perhaps it is a modern skull included for comparison? If those teeth are indeed from an archaeological dig, I think it shows there was a lot more advancement and intelligence than we are led to believe.

    Fear is simply a consequence of a lack of information.

    Not to get side tracked but I am certain some here have read the novel RELIC by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child --

    Quote In the epilogue four weeks later, Green, Frock, Kawakita, Pendergast, D'Agosta, and Smithback all have a meeting in Frock's office to discuss the events of that night. Pendergast explains everything in great detail: The Kothoga legend claimed that Mbwun was given to them by Satan in order to slay their enemies in battle, when in actuality, the Kothoga created the Mbwun by feeding it the strange plant that Whittlesey had discovered and shipped back to the museum. Eating the plant resulted in the human subject undergoing the transformation process into the creature known as Mbwun, larger, faster, stronger, and slightly smarter. However, the Mbwun subsequently needed a consistent supply of the plant in order to survive, like an addictive drug. When the tepui where the Kothoga and Mbwun lived was completely destroyed, the Mbwun knew that the last surviving samples of the plant was in the crates that Whittlesey had shipped back,
