Quote It's a scenario that has haunted biologists since the dawn of the DNA age: the evil scientist custom-crafting a human being with test tubes and Petri dishes.

So when a Chinese team revealed last month that it had used a new laboratory technique to alter a gene in human embryos, it set off an urgent debate over the ethics ~ and widsom ~ of tinkering with the most basic building blocks of life.

The technology makes genetic manipulations that were theoretical in the past seem easy to achieve ~ and soon.
Quote In the last few months, many researchers have come to realize that the new gene editing tool, known as CRISPR/Cas9, might provide an easy means for molding a person when he or she is just a single-celled embryo.

Before the Chinese study appeared in the journal Protein &Cell, top scientists had already called for a high-level summit to hash out the ethical issues raised by this sort of research. The goal is to make sure gene editing isn't used prematurely in patients, or employed to create genetically enhanced humans.
Quote Uptake in labs has been so enthusiastic that CRISPR has become a verb, a la Google. "People say, I'm going to CRISPR that," said UC Davis stem cell biologist Paul Knoepfler.
Quote A recent commentary in the journal Nature laid out a variety of potential problems. Mistakes might occur in the editing process that could result in severe birth defects. Successful edits could affect other parts of the genome that were meant to be left alone. It's impossible to get consent from future generations who might inherit an altered gene. People could use gene editing for "non-therapeutic genetic enhancement" ~ making designer babies with blue eyes and high IQs.
Quote Someone might alter an embryo and implant it in a woman for what seem like good reasons but with insufficient regard for the potential risks. Or perhaps for glory ~ or money ~ someone will create what amounts to a GMO uber baby. "You can't disregard human ambition."
It should not be difficult for Avalonians to read between the lines here and see that this article is only stating what has ~ already come to pass. A tip-of-the-iceberg kind of scenario. GMO uber-humans are amongst us perhaps?

    http://www.nih.gov/about/director/04...chnologies.htm

Statement on NIH funding of research using gene-editing technologies in human embryos.

Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health, announce last week that his agency would not fund gene editing experimentation involving emryos, which "has been viewed almost universally as a line that should not be crossed."

A good possibility for some "private funding", I would posit. Troubling it is.

    http://news.sciencemag.org/asiapacif...-editing-paper

Quote The paper has touched off a furor from scientists and others who have called for a moratorium on any efforts to establish a pregnancy with such a genetically modified embryo. Many have deemed Huang's experiment unethical, and Huang himself has reportedly said that the paper was rejected by Science and Nature in part for ethical reasons.
Quote The paper has split scientists, with consensus on the need for a moratorium on clinical applications...A recent commentary in Nature from industry-allied scientists called a halt to even basic studies of the method on human embryos.

they've already created genetically altered cloned humans ... (remember in the 70's, all those faces on the back of milk cartons , the older folks will remember) , we used to get milk in quart sized cardboard containers , plastic really wasn't used yet ... back then every week a new face of a child gone missing then they stopped doing it , the kids were never found ... The PTB go into their underground bunkers/cities . the clones do their work , and we on the surface get to deal with the situation ... Enoch spoke of robotic killing machines or cloned killing machines unleashed on humanity in the third world fire/war ... there will be more machine than human ...

Indeed so ghostrider. When I came across these articles yesterday, I immediately thought of a recent post on http://theruiner777.blogspot.com/ entitled, "Send in the Clones". Many of us have been reading of cloning technology for years (decades!) now. This recent scientific (alleged) firestorm of controversy surrounding the genetic modification of the human embryo, can be likened to a spigot which is about to be turned on full force in the coming years. I see it simply as a (mainstream scientific) verification of what has heretofore been in the realm of 'conspiracy theory'. The (Illuminati?) agendas within transhumanism and eugenics now seem to be a cause of some "urgency" within certain scientific quarters. At least on the surface.

I find it interesting that this "firestorm" of scientific debate is emerging out of and linked to China, where this "precedent-setting research" into germline genome modification is the center of ethical controversy. As one of the above articles even states, any ethical concerns may be moot at this juncture in time and space.

Seems to be a sign of our times, where ethical and moral concerns...are moot. A clear case of our technological advancement not keeping pace with human moral development.
