NSA must end bulk data collection even as Senate moves ahead on NSA bill

Washington (CNN)The government will stop collecting telephone metadata on millions of Americans after midnight Sunday, even after the Senate approved a key procedural motion to vote on a bill to reform that program.

The Senate entered a debate period late Sunday that will push beyond the midnight deadline, effectively ending the National Security Agency's bulk data collection program since it was first approved in 2006. That's when the government first used the post-9/11 passed Patriot Act as the legal basis for the information collecting program.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, took to the Senate floor after opposing the procedural vote to continue lambasting the NSA's domestic surveillance programs, pledging to offer amendments to the House-passed USA Freedom Act in a bid for further reforms. Paul had pledged Saturday to "force the expiration of the NSA illegal spy program."

He acknowledged Sunday that "the bill will ultimately pass," but appeared to reassure his supporters, some of whom packed the Senate gallery.

"The government after this bill passes will no longer collect your phone records," Paul said.

Counterterrorism officials will lose not just the bulk data collection program, but also the ability to obtain roving wiretaps to listen in on potential terror suspects, even if they change phones.

Law enforcement officials, though, will be allowed to continue to use roving wiretaps and to collect pinpointed data telecommunications companies and other businesses for ongoing investigations.

Those authorities will likely be restored as early as Wednesday when Republican leadership aides expect a final vote on the compromise bill -- the USA Freedom Act -- which overwhelmingly passed the House two weeks earlier.

I agree. Notice I wasn't pouring champagne... It's clear that the only thing they plan to stop is the bulk phone collection (on paper, anyway...). No mention of internet tracking, email gathering...so business as usual, under another name...

Such large corporate/government affairs don't just go quietly into the night. The data collection center in Utah is probably not lost for work, they are probably bustling and writhing along more than ever.

One reporting website offered that the patriot act has 'zombie clauses', meaning extant concerns that are already on paper, will continue to exist indefinitely. each of which can be expanded, in manifold directions and ways. Since they have 'detailed files' on everyone, this means they can probably start up any investigation that they desire, simply by creating a paper trail of justifiable connectivity to the given point of their desire.

Expect them to pull nonexistent pumped up falsified terrorists out of their collective asses. Count on it. Bet on it. which leads to... the problem of false flags that would be waiting in the wings, as prearranged scenarios to be enacted (by the black entities behind the original patriot act), in order to scaremonger the public into allowing for even more draconian systems than the patriot act to be passed through congress.

Kudos to Sen. Paul and kudos to all the congressman who sat on their behinds and did nothing. Let me guess that ignoring this bill wasn't all that easy and there was plenty of pressure from the PTB to act..

Yes, they still have a decades worth of data on us and have not been ordered to destroy it, and let me guess if they close Bluffdale, UT, there will still be another copy of these zetabytes of data in an underground base some place.

Never the less, this was a minor victory. Despite the fact that the media has mostly ignored this issue, we, the people, won and those who are trying to take our rights away, at least publicly, have had to take a step back. Of course, somewhere, someone is monitoring this thread and trying to figure out how much we know, but at least they are more of an outlaw than they were yesterday.
