The wonderfully cosmically skeptical Alex O'Conner just shared a recent animal rights speech. It's not even been a year since he made the change to veganism and wow, what an ambassador he's turning out to be! Really powerful stuff!

If you think Hindus are vegetarian, think again. Gadhimai, the Hindu festival of animal sacrifice just took place again, as it does every five years. Many of these creatures will be eaten after their cruel and brutal slaughter in the name of religion and tradition. It really doesn't get much more barbaric than this. View with caution.

    It's Official, There's a Plant Source of B12 (13:25 minutes)
“…and remember B12 is created by bacteria whether it's an animal or a plant there is no B12 producing organ like it doesn't come out of the spleen of an animal. It’s from bacteria in animals and in terms of the plant, it's also gonna be from bacteria. So we're gonna talk about how that b12 gets in there in a little bit.”

Try to get past that point in the video, Running Deer. All you have to do is drag the playhead beyond that point with your mouse. You will then be free to digest what she is saying.
While there is obviously no doubt that Australia has always suffered from bush fires, the phenomenon is clearly exacerbated by the intensive animal agriculture which it brazenly prides itself on and this is the point she was making. Firemen having a sausage sizzle to raise money for the cause etc....This is literally the epitome of idiocracy.

In the following short video, an English vet who became vegan shares her testimony regarding the contrast between care of farmed animals and pets. She also highlights the fact that farmers pay for their welfare inspections which perpetuates a cycle of corruption as well as leading to all manner of abuse, both for the animals as well as, in her case, the vet.

Freelee tends to have clips of brutal animal treatment throughout her vids. Those visuals get burned into my mind even when I fast forward. I assumed this was different because she’s changed her material over the last couple of years.

Whilst I can understand why you may have found that clip disturbing, the fact that there was a camera crew there filming the incident suggests to me that those horses made it out safely. Unfortunately it's the millions of animals which weren't in shot of the camera who didn't make it.

In the wake of the unbelievably successful Veganuary, the dairy industry has, for the second year in a row, attempted to claw back some of the market share.....with disastrous consequences, just like last year - surprise, surprise.

A quick Google search of the word reveals as many negative links on the subject as it does positive ones.

I found the following video response to the phenomenon particularly insightful as it uses educational industry footage, footage which Februdairy will never link to in a million years, but which forms the backbone of the industry itself.

Everyone who consumes milk should watch this. It is not graphic in the slaughterhouse footage sense so no blood. However, much of the footage does come off as some kind of weird bestiality flick (not that I've ever seen one). Frankly, the most disturbing thing for me was the laissé faire attitude of the farm workers or vets while they were engaged in their errrrrrrr...........activities??!!

Many here will have enjoyed Joker by now and no doubt some will have also seen Joaquin Phoenix's speech at the Oscars, in particular his focus on dairy consumption from his vegan perspective. What many will not know is that the next day he visited a slaughterhouse where he was able to save a calf and her mother: the calf had been born while the mother was waiting to be killed.

I don't mind admitting that since going vegan, I have missed simple luxuries like milk chocolate. I have come across a few high quality vegan chocolate bars but they have always been prohibitively expensive - perhaps no bad thing given my sweet tooth, but anyway.....it turns out Cadbury are working on a vegan version of their iconic dairy milk chocolate bar. I have to say, this is very exciting for me because it will no doubt open the floodgates of possibilities for vegan Crunchie bars, Twixes, Snickers and Mars bars etc....and if the vegan alternatives are as good as Cadbury want them to be, in other words, giving the same consumer experience, why would people still opt for the cruelty-laden version? Times are changin'.

Two Guys Create 'Leather' From Cactus, Will Save 1 Billion Animals Killed For Fashion
    https://www.indiatimes.com/technolog...on-507055.html

Whether you like it or hate it, you’ve got to admit, leather products aren’t good for the environment. In fact, according to PETA, the global leather industry kills more than a billion animals for their skin and hides.

However, what’s even more worrying is the impact leather has on the environment. Not only the animal from which leather is derived consumes a ton of water in its lifetime, but after deriving the skin, the treatment process introduces it with a ton of chemicals. This not only is harmful to the environment but also makes the leather item non-biodegradable.

Chinese government approves decision to ban consumption of wild animals
From journalist Isaac Yee and CNN’s Yong Xiong in Shanghai
    February 24, 2020

    https://www.cnn.com/asia/live-news/c...32d35e32c4469f

( It probably won't stop the illegal black market trade, but it's a step.)

"China's top political body approved the decision on Monday to ban the consumption and the illegal trade of wild animals, which some experts believe to be the source of the virus.

The National People’s Congress Standing Committee approved the ban on Monday in a bid to help “safeguard public health and ecological security," according to Chinese state media.

The move aims to “completely ban the eating of wild animals” while also “cracking down on illegal trade of wildlife,” state media reports.

The use of wild animals for scientific research, medicine and exhibition will now need to go through “strict examination and approval” by the supervising department in accordance with relevant regulations.

This comes after Chinese authorities suspended the trade of wild animals on January 26th in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus."

I made vegetable tempura with Chinese take-away style sweet and sour sauce and rice last week.....maybe not the most healthy food but it was really good. Deep-fried battered mushrooms, broccoli and zucchini. Here's the batter recipe:

1/2 cup plain flour (replace with rice flour for gluten free)

    1/2 tsp salt

    1/2 tsp sugar

    1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

    2 tbsp cornstarch

1/2 water (add a bit more if it's too thick)

Mix together into a smooth paste and then dip veggies in and fry in vegetable oil (I used sunflower oil).

For the take-away sweet and sour sauce:

    50g sugar

    35g vinegar

    20ml water

    40g tomato ketchup

    For thickening the sauce:

    4g cornstarch

    5ml water

mix the ingredients in a pan and bring to simmer. Then add the mixed thickening paste until the whole sauce thickens.

Dip tempura in the sauce and enjoy or serve with rice and drizzle sauce on top: your choice. Frying some peppers and onion in a wok also compliments the meal.

Or if you're feeling a bit more adventurous.........
