Lightbulb Stay away from the 'squirrels' - Borna-Virus Alert

Squirrels can harbour an infection which leads to terrible psychotic behaviour in humans, with symptoms of brain swelling, or commonly called "encephalitis".

A newly discovered bornavirus transmitted from the squirrels to humans can eventually led to fatal cases of encephalitis

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control this infection could be an “emerging threat.”

They say, “A new bornavirus that can be transmitted to humans and cause severe disease has been detected in variegated squirrels. The study shows that exotic animal species can have the risk of transmitting novel zoonotic viruses to humans from close contact.”

Zoonotic diseases are infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans. Rabies, Ebola are two obvious ones. Rabbit fever (coming in contact with affected rabbits, carrying the disease Tularemia) is also present in rodents - such is Hantavirus as discussed in the Hemorrhagic Fever thread.

Stop feeding these squirrels, don't come in contact with, either living or dead ones.

Bornavirus - Bornavirus is a genus of viruses in the order Mononegavirales. Horses, sheep, cattle, rodents, birds, and human serve as natural hosts. There are currently five species in this genus, and it is the only genus in its family.

Borna disease is an infectious neurological syndrome of warm-blooded animals, caused by Borna disease virus (BDV), which causes abnormal behaviour and fatality.

The Borna disease virus is a neurotropic virus and is a member of the Bornaviridae family within the Mononegavirales order.

Although the Borna disease virus is mainly seen as the causative agent of borna disease in horses and other animals, it also infects humans and is therefore considered to be a zoonotic agent.

In 1995, the virus was isolated from cats suffering from a "staggering disease" in Sweden. Since that time, the virus has also been detected in cats in Japan and Britain.

Borna virus has been detected in humans, and researchers have presented evidence connecting these infections with psychiatric disorders.

BORNA VIRUS IMPLICATED IN MENTAL DISORDERS

Mental illness is a strong risk factor for violent or criminal behavior (See Crime Times, Vol. 2, No. 3, Page 1&2).

While the causes of most mental illnesses remain a mystery, surprising new research suggests that some cases of schizophrenia and other mental illnesses are associated with the Borna virus, an infectious agent that causes aggression, hyperactivity, and other behavioral disorders in animals.

Researchers have previously reported that antibodies to Borna virus are present in up to a third of patients with schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder, compared to only two percent of non-disabled individuals. Recently, Liv Bode et al. isolated a strain of Borna virus in mood- disordered human subjects and injected it into laboratory animals, which developed behavioral problems.

Researcher R. Michael Hendry told Science News that "this is the first solid clue that an infectious agent may be linked to mental illness." (Woah....)

    -----
"Is mental illness infectious?" Science News, Vol. 150, No. 7, August 17, 1996.

    --and--

"A borna-virus cDNA encoding a protein recognized by antibodies in humans with behavioral diseases," Susan VandeWoude et al., Science, Vol. 250, No. 4985, November 30, 1990.

The mechanism is swelling of different regions of the brain.. Leading to neurological assault.

How do you get rid of the junky virus????

Few years ago I had read that you cannot........

Below it tells how to avoid replication of the virus, but it does not seem to kill it.

Quote Medical conditions associated with significantly higher rate of active Bornavirus infection are acute depressive episodes (uni- and bipolar), in 80-90% of patients, chronic obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), in at least 50-60% of patients, and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS/ME0 in at least 40% of patients. [6] The symptoms that are common to the majority of these patients are cognitive deficits and bradylogia (abnormally slow speech), reduced intellectual capability, attention and concentration deficits (especially among young adults and children), memory loss, and learning disabilities (especially among children and young adults). [6]

    ...........Treatment

Patients diagnosed with BDV infection are treated with a drug that has been approved for the past 40 years for treatment of influenza A virus, which has the active ingredient of amantadine sulphate. [6] This has shown to be highly effective against natural Bornaviruses. Amantadine sulphate is a virostatic agent that inhibits virus replication, and, therefore, prevents the formation of harmful viral proteins. [6] Around 70-80% of patients infected with acute depression derive long-term benefits from amantadine sulphate, and it could be prescribed with antidepressants as well. [6]

Dosage level should be 2-4 mg of amantadine sulphate per day per kg of body weight. A patient who weighs 75 kg should take 150-300 mg of amantadine sulphate daily, and the initial dose of 1 mg of amantadine sulphate per kg of body weight for the first three or four days should be observed. [6]

Treatment duration should normally last up to 3 months, and clinical improvement are to be expected in the first month. During the first week, some restlessness and sleep disturbances are possible. [6]

Some studies have also found Ara-C (1-beta-arabinofuranosylcytosine) a drug often used in chemotherapy, to be effective in inhibiting the replication and spread of BDV. [2]

I say hello to the squirrels when they fuss at me for walking across my yard. They're territorial little critters.

Isn't it fascinating that the brain swelling may be involved, with certain regions affected? And the result of swelling being a type of brain damage and resulting malady?

In the Ebola Thread, I pointed out a whole set of different anti-virals which ARE broad spectrum.. Just stopping the EBOLA research because of the flareup 'burning' itself out certainly is not smart, considering the emerging viral diseases..

I find it so absolutely amazing, the "fascination that people have" allowing "cute rodents" into their lives (wild animals) which can harbour various virus.. Is the mental illness (symptomology presenting) actually do to VIRUS infection? And NOT other conspiracy causes? think about that for a moment..

Hantavirus sickness and death is UP with more rodents coming around human habitat.. Rabbit fever (bacterial) is spreading into ground squirrels and prairie dogs, and people are dying from the lung pneumonia, similar to SARS and MERS..

Seems to me anti-viral research is critical for creating a LOW COST anti-viral about as convenient as something that can be obtained over-the-counter in the supermarket.

I had pointed out with Ebola there are certain substances, anti-virals which will prophylactically protect one prior to exposure, and needed anti-bodies can be built up internally without having a vaccine. Why would that be suppressed?
