Birds are most amazing creatures. I was walking out by a river near my home yesterday. There is a area of small rapids on this river. I was blown away to see a group of about 10 ducks riding these rapids and all the while they happily honking as they rode them. I am absolutely sure that they were doing it for the fun of it!!!!! It was just mind boggling. I kept smiling all day just thinking about them. All living creatures are so much more than meets the eye. I never tire of the wonder of creation.

p.s. And that reminds me...I saw some baby ducks on the river in back of my house in Boulder Creek one time. I could not believe how fast they could swim! They were like jet-propelled, downy soap-bubbles, I kid you not.

We have tons of magpies here in Calgary, and while pretty to look at, these birds make the most god awful noises at 5:00 am. Closely related to crows, imagine the sound that a crow makes in reverse, plus loud chattering and clacking. I have come to appreciate these birds for their sheer intelligence and ability to "play".

I was at the transit stop one day, and I was watching a small group of magpies under a light post; one of them flew up to the top of the light post, perched, then suddenly dove straight toward the ground (asphalt parking lot), swooping out of at the last minute - about a foot from hitting the ground. He flys up again, perches and repeats, but this time gets about six inches from the ground after swooping out. Then I see him do it again, but this time he crashes into the ground. What could he have possible been doing besides just trying to see how close he could get to the ground while swooping out of the dive? There's just no other explanation.

Another time, the neighbours cat decided to try to get one (bad idea) that was across the street in a tree. Well as soon as the magpie saw the cat coming, he started making noises and another showed up. The two birds teased the cat and lured it high up into the tree, then out onto weak branches, the whole while staying just out of reach of the cat. The cat ended up hanging by it's front paws on a branch that was to weak for him to even pull himself up onto. The cats owner finally saw it and ran out to rescue it.

I have also seen them do flying "stunts" for no reason at all, like backflips in mid flight, trying to fly between narrow things at high speed, etc. I have been convinced that these birds do indeed "talk" to each other, and they are most often just goofing off and having fun. Being a close relative of the crow, it does make sense they would similar. Crows have been caught "sledding" on a snowy roof using a margarine container lid as the sled.
