The article just quotes 'ten times faster', but is lacking in comparative figures. It's a bit like saying some wonder-food cuts the cases of a cancer by 50 percent. Sounds great until you realise that there are only one in 10,000 cases, which is reduced to one in 20,000. Always be sceptical of numbers - and a site like Live Science should know better.

If the earth's magnetic field is decreasing by some minuscule amount, a 10-fold increase might well still be minuscule - but that article doesn't flesh the story with any comparative figures.

Regarding its effect on the Schumann resonance, it's already established that it has not changed frequency because it's a function of physical dimensions of the cavity between the earth and the D-layer. No one need take my or NASA's word for it, just post a question on an amateur ELF study website.

Scientist who linked GMOs and glyphosate to rat tumors wins SECOND court case against criminal biotech shills who forged signatures to discredit his research

The Parisian High Court has ruled that French Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini, a scientist known for his controversial research linking GM feed with cancerous tumor growth in rats, was right when he concluded that GMOs are unsafe for human consumption.

Marc Fellous, former chairman of France's Biomolecular Engineering Commission (BEC), has been indicted for "forgery" and "the use of forgery," in a libel trial that he lost to Prof Gilles-Eric Seralini.

The BEC authorized multiple GM crops as safe for human consumption, while lying to the public and hiding scientific data suggesting GM food may be carcinogenic and health-damaging.

Details of the case are not available to the public, but according to an article on Seralini's website, Fellous had used or copied the signature of a scientist, without his agreement, to argue that Seralini and his co-researchers were wrong in their reassessment of Monsanto's own rat feeding studies.

During the reassessments – supported by the independent organization CRIIGEN – alarming signs of toxicity were reported when GMOs and Roundup were used long-term.

The sentence against Fellous is expected to be handed down in June 2016.

Second court victory reached
This was actually Seralini's second court win in the battle against toxic GM food, which all started in September 2012, when an article written by Jean-Claude Jaillette was published in Marianne magazine. It accused Seralini's team of "scientific fraud in which the methodology served to reinforce pre-determined results."

After a three-year lawsuit, the 17th Criminal Chamber of the High Court of Paris fined Marianne magazine and its journalists for public defamation of a public official, and public defamation of the researchers and CRIIGEN, chaired by Dr. Joel Spiroux de Vendomois.

The latest trial found that the original accusation, published in Forbes Magazine, actually came from American lobbyist Henry I. Miller, also known to discredit research linking tobacco and cancer.

The fight isn't over
Seralini's long-term studies linking GMOs and glyphosate to rat tumors are being republished, after being retracted by the journal Food and Chemical Toxicology, under pressure from lobbyists at Monsanto and within the Biotech industry.

They pushed the creation of a new position on the original Food and Chemical Toxicology journal: Associate Editor for Biotechnology. This new position was filled by a former Monsanto employee, who convinced the journal to withdraw the article.

Why this article needed to go
While studying Monsanto's own data, Seralini and his team found significant chronic kidney deficiencies and larger tumors in rats fed GM maize. They believe that endocrine disruptions and overexpression of EPSPS transgene or other mutational effects in the GM maize are responsible for causing these issues.

In their long-term studies, both treatment and control groups were fed uncontrolled GM feed. Eleven out of 13 of the diets were found to contain GMOs. Monsanto's safety report concluded that GM canola was safe due to a lack of difference between the two groups.

When the scientists took a closer look at Monsanto's data, however, they found the Purina feed given to the control group to be contaminated with 12.8% GM soy and 35.6% GM maize, which wasn't even labeled as GM at all.

Seralini's reassessment concludes that long-term trials are needed to evaluate the safety of GM foods and the use of pesticides before making them available to the public.

Scared yet? You should be, because unless we start firing our garbage out of giant cannons and into the sun, it’s safe to say that some day soon we’re all going to be living on one great big floating ball of trash.
It’s a pretty bleak prospect, but thanks to people like Icelandic Product Designer Ari Jónsson, such a grimly apocalyptic scenario could be avoided if we all just got a little greener. Take his water bottle for example. It’s made from algal, a product of algae. It’s 100% natural and 100% biodegradable. It keeps its shape until it’s empty and then it begins to decompose.
Ari exhibited his project during this year’s Reykjavik design festival DesignMarch. Let’s just hope that major manufacturers take some inspiration from his brilliant invention.

Science proves: Altruism is better strategy

Why do we feel good about giving to charity when there is no direct benefit to ourselves, and feel bad about cheating the system? Mathematicians may have found an answer to the longstanding puzzle as to why we have evolved to cooperate.

An international team of researchers, publishing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, has found that altruism is favoured by random fluctuations in nature, offering an explanation to the mystery as to why this seemingly disadvantageous trait has evolved.

The researchers, from the Universities of Bath, Manchester and Princeton (USA), developed a mathematical model to predict the path of evolution when altruistic "cooperators" live alongside "cheats" who use up resources but do not themselves contribute.

Humans are not the only organisms to cooperate with one another. The scientists used the example of Brewer's yeast, which can produce an enzyme called invertase that breaks down complex sugars in the environment, creating more food for all. However, those that make this enzyme use energy that could instead have been used for reproduction, meaning that a mutant "cheating" strain that waits for others to do the hard work would be able to breed faster as a result.

Darwinian evolution suggests that their ability to breed faster will allow the cheats (and their cheating offspring) to proliferate and eventually take over the whole population. This problem is common to all altruistic populations, raising the difficult question of how cooperation evolved...

A new study is the first to demonstrate beneficial placebo effect for lower back pain sufferers who knew they were taking 'fake pills.' Patients who knowingly took placebos reported 30 percent less pain and 29 percent reduction in disability compared to control group. 'Open-labeling' addresses longtime ethical dilemma, allowing patients to choose placebo treatments with informed consent.

A new paper is the first to demonstrate that patients who knowingly took a placebo in conjunction with traditional treatment for lower back pain saw more improvement than those given traditional treatment alone.

The Netherlands held a competition to design new refugee housing. These are the winners.

In 2015, nearly 60,000 refugees arrived in the Netherlands needing a place to live.

The Netherlands is a small country, just more than half the size of West Virginia, so housing all of them was going to be a challenge. As the worldwide refugee crisis continues, innovative solutions are needed so that the people fleeing civil war and sectarian violence have a safe place to live.

In this case, the solution involved, in part, opening up an old abandoned prison as temporary public housing. It was a less-than-ideal situation to say the least.

The country was determined to do better.

In January 2016, the Netherlands launched a design competition called "A Home Away From Home" in which entrants were tasked with designing temporary housing for refugees and disaster victims.

All of the winning designs rethought the idea of public housing, adding amenities and innovations to make the buildings more like fully functioning homes than simply a bed to sleep on.

The winners of the contest recently appeared on display in Amsterdam as part of Dutch Design Week and included things like solar power, water purification systems, and ingenious use of space and material.



This Farmyard shelter is designed to transform vacant farmland into mini villages.



The cube design of the Farmland means dozens can be stacked, placed together, and moved easily. The architects of this design imagined the miniature villages establishing a "DIY economy" with local towns.

Another designer created these styrofoam towers as perfect low-waste housing for refugees being processed at reception sites.



They're insulated, waterproof, fire resistant, and very cost-efficient. They have all the amenities of an apartment — beds, a sink, a toilet, a shower, and a kitchen table — and can easily be rigged up with electricity.

Comfort City is one designer's solution for cities that don't have enough space to house a large number of refugees.

Every part of the Comfort City design is modular and adaptable, meaning it can be easily constructed in empty industrial buildings — or even abandoned prisons — while providing the homey comfort that abandoned prisons tend to lack.

Then there were designs like this modern Solar Cabin that can actually generate revenue and electricity.



Its solar paneled roof actually generates more energy than is needed to power the home, so the occupants can sell electricity back to the local grid to make a profit.

And finally, this sleek cube design actually comes with a built-in water purifier.



The cubes are Finch Evolutionary Wooden Buildings and are portable, easy to construct, and run on solar-powered batteries. They also have a vacuum toilet system that recycles water on site, making the whole thing self-sufficient.

We're going to need more and more of this type of housing and way of thinking about the refugee crisis.

Home is a concept many of us take for granted, but it's not a small thing. It makes us feel safe, comfortable, and human.

The current refugee crisis hasn't showed signs of slowing down, and with climate change creating more and more dangerous weather systems, we're likely to see climate refugee numbers grow sharply. All of those people are going to need places to live. Innovative solutions like these help them to not only live, but live with dignity and opportunity.

Photographer Mehmet Genç takes photos of women around the world before and after they receive a compliment. What happens next is priceless.

Two years ago, Turkish photographer Mehmet Genç embarked on his latest project visiting indigenous communities in Latin America. As his Instagram alias, rotasizseyyah or “nomad without a route”, suggests, the photo that gave birth to his “You are so Beautiful” project was entirely unplanned.

In January 2015, Genç was in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Mexico. He had been trying to get his subject to feel more comfortable under the scrutiny of his camera, and when a request for her to smile didn’t quite work, he found himself telling her she was beautiful.

“I needed an icebreaker," he said, “I needed a pick-up sentence. Something easy to say and something that makes [people] show an expression. And what is better than a compliment as an icebreaker? It makes a connection for a short time and makes people relax and smile.”

The result from his shot, he said, was so sincere and heartwarming that he decided he had found the concept for his new project.

Genç is still on his journey to capture the power of this compliment, and plans to continue the project until October 2017. The photos he’s already published on his website, however, show the incredible effect these simple words can have.



When asked to have her photo taken, Mathilda from Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, said, “I don’t have any teeth. Please don’t make me laugh.” After being told she was beautiful, she didn’t seem to mind anymore. “She and I laughed a lot. It was nice moment,” Genç said, adding that it is one of his favourite shots.



Margarita was selling fruit at a street bazaar in Otavalo, Ecuador, when Genç approached her. She agreed to pose for a picture after the photographer bought some of her wares, but still didn’t smile when he asked her to. Her grin was genuine, though, when she heard the compliment.



Zarekkim, from Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, an isolated mountainous area in Colombia, only speaks her native Arhuaco language. When he arrived in her village, Genç learned how to say “you are so beautiful” in Arhuaco, and captured her overwhelmed reaction on camera.



Genç met Juliana in a village adjacent to Cabo de la Vela, a coastal area in northern Colombia where desert meets the Caribbean Sea. The region is extremely dry, with some months seeing virtually no rain, and Juliana wore a mask to protect her face from the sun. She was selling handicrafts when Genç approached her, and smiled happily when she received the compliment.



Meto, from the Marubo tribe in the Brazilian Amazon, also only speaks her native language. The photographer learned to say basic greetings in Marubo, as well as the compliment that got her to finally smile for the camera.



Mimba and baby Maya are also part of Brazil’s Marubo tribe. Mimba was shy, and it was only on the second visit to her home that the photographer finally got her permission to take her photo. She seemed to relax, though, when he paid her a compliment.



Altena was sitting on the front porch of her house in Atalaia do Norte, Brazil, when Genç asked to take her picture. She was very friendly, he said, and posed for several shots before breaking into a laugh when he told her she was beautiful.



Cosmita, also from Atalaia do Norte, surprised Genç with her reaction to the compliment. “I haven’t seen anyone who has been affected like this after I said ‘you are so beautiful’,” he said.
