    I was at first a little nonplussed by this — was this exploitative? manipulative? sensational? unkind? — but it does seem that the photographer's discovery was a pure accident.

    It'd have been nice if he also chose more women who by any cultural standards (beautiful girls in their 20s, or even young children, maybe initially looking serious) were already indisputably attractive.

    It opens up the entire question of what 'beauty' is — of course.

    Indian state plants 66.3mn saplings in 12hrs
    https://www.rt.com/viral/395287-tree...indian-plants/

    Quote Only a country with more than 1 billion people could attempt to plant 66 million trees in just 12 hours. In the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh they did just that, thanks to 1.5 million volunteers.

    total of 66.3 million trees were planted, consisting of 20 species. “While the world talks about global warming and climate change, people of Madhya Pradesh are making significant contribution to deal with it,” Chouhan said.

    Officials from Guinness World Records observed the planting, according to the Times of India, with news on whether the state managed to set a new record expected in the coming weeks. Last year its neighboring state of Uttar Pradesh set a world record when it planted 50 million trees in one day.
    1.5 million people planting 3 trees an hour for half a day- what a feat! I wonder how they organized such an event.. Sapling-growing parties anyone?

    Pakistan has just planted over a billion trees

    Author: Rosamond Hutt, Formative Content

    Pakistan hit its billion tree goal in August 2017 – months ahead of schedule. Now, the hills of the country’s northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are alive with newly planted saplings.

    NAB to investigate K-P's Billion tree tsunami

    Hope this is true, please verify with pakistani members.
    Quote Its hard to believe planting 1,000,000,000 saplings in 3 years. Do the math with 150,000 workers. Each worker plants 6666 trees.

    “The people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were shocked and depressed when it came to their information that the government records reveal 240 million trees have been planted actually rather than 1.18 billion, it says and demands NAB inquiry in the project.

    Even that number is impressive!!!

    Here is a more critical article about the project:

    Billion-tree tsunami — confronting falsehood
    The massive reforestation project – named the Billion Tree Tsunami – added 350,000 hectares of trees both by planting and natural regeneration, in an effort to restore the province’s depleted forests and fight the effects of climate change.

    Decades of felling and natural disasters have drastically reduced Pakistan’s forests. Figures for the country’s total forest cover range between around 2% and 5% of land area. Nevertheless, Pakistan has one of the lowest levels of forest cover in the region and well below the 12% recommended by the UN.

    It is also among the six countries that will be most affected by global warming.

    Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had lost large areas of forest to felling, which increased the likelihood of flooding and landslides. In 2016 flash floods hit the province, killing dozens of people.

    Green success story

    Cricket-star turned politician Imran Khan, whose Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party governs in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, spearheaded the Billion Tree Tsunami, which started in 2014 and cost $169 million.

    As well as benefiting the environment, the project has established a network of private tree nurseries, which have boosted local incomes and generated green jobs, including for unemployed young people and women in the province.

    It also meant the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government surpassed its 348,400 hectare commitment to the Bonn Challenge. This aims to restore 150 million hectares of degraded and deforested land worldwide by 2020, and 350 million hectares by 2030. It was the first Bonn Challenge pledge to reach its restoration goal.

    Inger Andersen, head of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the NGO in charge of administering the Bonn Challenge, described it as “a true conservation success story”.

    However, the Billion Tree Tsunami has attracted criticism as well as praise within Pakistan, and an official inquiry into allegations of corruption has been launched.

    Experts at World Wildlife Fund-Pakistan, which monitored and conducted an independent audit of the reforestation drive, say the project has been an environmental, economic and social success, VOA news reported.

    Its popularity has prompted Pakistan’s federal government to launch its own Green Pakistan programme, which aims to plant 100 million trees in five years across the country.

    Reviving 14 lakes in India

    This 25-Year-Old Has Brought About A Dozen Dead Lakes Back To Life

    This 25-Year-Old Has Brought About A Dozen Dead Lakes Back To Life

    The issue of shrinking water resources has become a major issue around the country.

    As per Niti Aayog reports, India is suffering from the worst water crisis in its history. Reports also suggest that Delhi and Bangalore could completely run out of groundwater by 2020.

    All these reports and data suggest that not much is being done to control the situation. However, one man has taken it upon himself to do something about it.

    Ramveer Tanwar, from Dadha village in Greater Noida, was moved by the plight of lakes. He started the cleaning and rejuvenation process of the lakes. Mr Tanwar, who works as an engineer in an MNC, has been reviving lakes and ponds since 2014.

    Reviving dying lakes

    “There are two cities in Gautam Buddha Nagar district in Uttar Pradesh – Noida and Greater Noida. There were more than 200 lakes in Noida and right now there are officially absolutely no lakes in the city.

    “The situation in Greater Noida is slightly better as the lakes here have not gone obsolete but they are in extremely bad condition,” Ramveer told The Logical Indian.

    This sorry state of water bodies in the city, which at one point served as a public attraction and source of water, now converted to a dumping ground, moved Ramveer to do something about it.

    “Last year in Dabra village, we tried reviving a lake by removing all its waste. Many of the villagers came ahead to help. Some of them worked with us, some offered us tools and equipment.

    “We even contacted the forest department which provided us with plants to be planted around the lake. Right now, the trees we have planted there are flourishing.”

    Lake Cleaning

    Ramveer also observed that since a lot of plastic was dumped directly into these lakes, the process of underground water recharging was getting hampered.

    “We then devised a simple double filtration system. So any water entering the lakes would have to pass through a mesh of wooden planks and then a mesh of grass.”

    The mesh of wooden planks help to stop bigger items like plastic bottles and the subsequent mesh then filters the incoming water further. This year itself, Ramveer has been able to revive three-four more lakes.

    Before and After

    “We understand it is not a one time job. So, we have told the fishermen there that we will clean the lakes for them, but the responsibility of maintaining it would rest on their shoulders.”

    Before and After

    Jal Choupal

    Ramveer who considers environmentalist Vikrant Tongad his inspiration has been passionate about the environment since he was pursuing B.Tech.

    “When I was young, my friends and I would play around in the ponds and lakes. But as the time passed, all of these water bodies have vanished.

    “The ones which have survived were observed to be in extremely bad condition. The quality and the level of groundwater has also gone down considerably.”

    While he was still in college Ramveer started “Jal Choupal”, a gathering of villagers, where he would explain about the importance of water conservation.

    “Due to lack of awareness, people in the village would waste water incessantly. They are doing this out of ignorance. Fining them for this is not a solution.”

    Ramveer gives them real-time instances and makes them take pledges.

    “They themselves come up and tell how earlier they would get water just by digging five to ten feet, now they are forced to dig up to 150 feet,” says Ramveer.

    What started from just one village, now covers about 50 villages.

    “The Uttar Pradesh government has made groups called the “Bhujal Sena” (Groundwater army) in every district. I have been appointed as the coordinator of my district.”

    At a time when we are staring at a major water crisis in the country, initiatives like these prove that we still have hope.
    We are playing a virtual reality game, of duality. In the game of choices, align your choices with your ideals. Everything is whole, complete and perfect. Even yourself. Love is the power to change/create.

    Hero Dog Breaks Out Of House, Leads Police Back Home To Save Owner From Gas Leak

    February 7, 2019 at 7:34 pm

    https://newyork.cbslocal.com/2019/02...wner-gas-leak/

    TUCKAHOE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A dog in Westchester County is being hailed a hero
    after breaking out of her home to save her owner’s life.

    At first police thought she was a dog on the loose, but then realized the pit
    bull was on a mission to get help.

    On Wednesday around 3:30 p.m. Sadie – a 60-pound pit bull – was found wandering
    the streets of Tuckahoe barking up a storm.

    “We got a call of a loose pit bull,” Lawrence Rotta of the Tuckahoe Police
    Department said.

    Police tried to catch her but Sadie bolted back to her home on Fairview Avenue
    with cops in hot pursuit. When they got there they said they noticed the sliding
    door in the backyard was open.

    “When they went to investigate they noticed an odor of gas emanating from the
    doorway,” Rotta told CBS2’s Scott Rapoport.

    It turns out there was an actual gas leak in the home. Police believe Sadie ran
    from the house to get away from it and then led officers back to help.

    “What do you think she was doing?” Rapoport asked Sadie’s owner.

    “I don’t know. I want to say bringing them here. What else could it be,” Serena
    Costello said.

    Costello, who was not home at the time, is calling Sadie is a hero. She added
    that if not for her precious pit bull, something terrible could have happened.

    “An explosion. I have no idea,” Costello predicted.

    Sadie’s owner added that she believes Sadie smelled the gas, started scratching
    frantically at the front door, before somehow nuzzling open the sliding door in
    the kitchen on her own.

    How Sadie was able to figure out how to pry open the sliding door, Costello said
    she doesn’t know.

    Ultimately she says cops called the local fire department and Con Ed. The gas
    was turned off and everything is now fine – thanks to the 11-year-old pit bull.

    “You saved us,” the grateful owner said while embracing her dog.

    25 beached whales in GA:
    https://www.news4jax.com/news/georgi...-simons-island

    Maybe unrelated but I've noticed that ever since hurricanes Matthew and Irma we've had several incidents of odd things washing ashore and worse rip tides than normal. Maybe related, maybe not, but thought I'd mention it.

    ~~~
    Note from Bill: I moved this post from the Animals are Magical thread. In this instance it was humans who were magical: most of the beached whales were saved by fast-acting people who were right there on the beach, witnessing the inexplicable event.
    Dozens of 'Extinct' Creatures Found Alive in 'Lost City' Deep Within Rainforest
    https://themindunleashed.com/2019/06...lost-city.html
    Scientists found 198 species of birds, 40 of small mammals, 56 amphibian and reptile species, 30 of large mammals, 94 butterfly species, and so much more.
    Lost City
    ( TMU ) — A specialized team of conservation scientists has found what appears to be a hidden oasis deep in the rainforest of Honduras that's teeming with dozens of rare and endangered creatures.
    The remote settlement, known as the “Lost City of the Monkey God” or “White City” and located in the Mosquitia rainforest, is a stunning example of the biodiversity that was once common across the tropics and rainforests in the region. The rainforest is home to hundreds of species of bats, butterflies and reptiles, the Independent reports .
    The “ecological SWAT team” from Conservation International's Rapid Assessment Program (RAP) conducted their three-week expedition in 2017 after ancient ruins were discovered in the rainforest, which remains one of the least-explored areas of the region. Their full report on the expedition and its dizzying array of findings was only published this week.
    The report details how the pristine ecosystem is filled with a number of rare and unique species, including those previously believed to be extinct.
    This has included the False Tree Coral Snake, the pale-faced bat, and a tiger beetle which many had thought was already extinct. 22 species were also recorded whose presence in Honduras had previously been unknown, including the endangered Great Green Macaw and a livebearing fish that scientists have only now discovered.
    In today's world, it seems like a tale from the “Indiana Jones” movies. But a sensational archaeological find in an unexplored jungle was real as it was surprising to the explorers who ventured there.
    In total, scientists documented 198 species of birds, 94 butterfly species, 40 of small mammals, 56 amphibian and reptile species, and 30 species of large mammals—including jaguars, ocelots and pumas—not to mention a huge variety of plants, fish, rodents and insects.
    Trond Larsen, the director of RAP, expressed that his team was “ shocked ” by their major find. In a press release , Larsen noted:
    “The 'White City' is one of the few areas remaining in Central America where ecological and evolutionary processes remain intact.”
    The conservationist added that the diversity of the area's wildlife makes it a very high priority for future conservation efforts. Larsen said:
    “One of the main reasons we found such high species richness and abundance of threatened and wide-ranging species (eg, peccaries) is that the forests around the White City remain pristine, unlike much of the region.
    This makes the area a high conservation priority for maintaining the broader landscape connectivity that is essential for the long-term persistence of biodiversity through Central America.”
    The White City has long been sought after by explorers searching for what is believed to be the home to an ancient civilization that inhabited the area during the pre-Columbian era.
    The area, which is largely undeveloped, has faced threats from illegal economic activities such as deforestation due to cattle ranching, in spite of efforts by Honduras' president in 2005 to extend official protection to the “lost city.”
    Larsen said:
    “And these are areas with no road networks, no logistics or infrastructure to let people get in or let guards in, so it's very hard to stop what's happening.
    In many cases, this illegal activity is being driven tangentially by drug trafficking, so it's driven by powerful people with money. That's the primary threat to the integrity of the forest of the area.”
    Another member of the RAP SWAT team, John Polisar, noted the importance of ensuring strong protection that would allow the treasure-trove of rare creatures to thrive:
    “We have been doing field work in the indigenous territories of La Moskitia for 14 years, and this site stood out as being simply gorgeous.
    Because of its presently intact forests and fauna the area is of exceptionally high conservation value. It merits energetic and vigilant protection so its beauty and wildlife persist into the future.”
    Ugandan Woman Bursts With Joy When She is Given Her First-Ever Pair of Shoes
    https://themindunleashed.com/2019/07...air-shoes.html
    In many parts of the world, millions of adults and children do not own shoes.
    (TMU) — In countries such as the United States, the average person’s closet is overflowing with shoes (approximately 20 pairs, in fact). But in many other parts of the world, millions of adults and children lack footwear. This fact was recently highlighted when a stranger gifted the shoes off her feet to a Ugandan woman, then captured her overjoyed reaction on video.
    Earlier this month, Laura Grier was being driven through Bwindi National Park when she spotted a Ugandan woman walking barefoot. She immediately asked the driver to pull over. According to GoodNewsNetwork, Grier felt compelled to give the woman the shoes off of her own feet.
    After Grier’s driver helped put the shoes on the woman’s feet, she began dancing with an infectious joy. Incredibly, the shoes were a perfect fit.
    Watch the heartwarming video below:
    Grier told Newsflare:
    “When I saw the woman on the side of the road barefoot, I urged my driver to stop. The woman was barefoot and had never owned shoes before, so we stopped the car to pull over and give them to her, and her reaction to wearing the shoes was priceless!”
    According to nonprofit Soles 4 Souls, more than 300 million children around the world do not have shoes to wear. Not only does having a pair of shoes provide comfort, but footwear can increase access to education, treat debilitating diseases, and even help curb water and soil-borne illnesses.
    New Plastic “Zeoform” Turns Hemp Into Almost Anything
    https://www.naturalblaze.com/2019/12...-anything.html
    By Joe Martino
    The Facts: Zeoform is a material that changes everything. It’s made from cellulose fibres and water. Their patented process converts cellulose fibres into an industrial-strength moulding material capable of being formed into an array of products.
    Reflect On: Zeoform is 100% non-toxic, biodegradable, compostable and ‘locks up’ carbon into beautiful, functional forms. A perfect solution for emerging hemp industries and bio-waste nations. Solutions exist, finding solutions are not the issue, so what is?
    What if today’s plastics could be made from materials which were not only sustainable, but non-toxic? At the moment, our plastics are made from oil, which means not only are we putting toxic chemicals into our atmosphere, but we are also filling our environment with products that cannot bio-degrade.
    To combat this problem, a company out of Australia has created a promising new product called Zeoform, made entirely out of water and cellulose taken from hemp plants. This means their plastic is not only eco-friendly in production but is also biodegradable!
    As stated on their website:
    Quote Zeoform is a revolutionary material that changes everything. Made from cellulose fibres and water – and absolutely nothing else! Our patented process converts cellulose fibres into a super strong high tech moulding material capable of being formed into a multitude of products. ZEOFORM is 100% non-toxic, biodegradable and ‘locks up’ carbon from waste into beautiful, functional forms.
    According to Zeoform, their product is very durable and relies only on the natural process of hydrogen bonding that takes place when cellulose fibres are mixed with water. No glue or bonding material is necessary because the bond created is already so strong. The final material can be formed into almost anything and can be cut, routed, machined, drilled, screwed, nailed, and glued in the same way wood and wood composites can be. It can also be coloured/dyed, and finished in any way creators like.
    The material is inherently water- and fire-resistant and can be reinforced further in both categories with some small adjustments to ingredients. Zeoform can also be made into anything, from car parts to paper, moulds, furniture, and even musical instruments – the possibilities are endless.
    Given the practicality of this material, the company hopes to expand their patented technology and begin offering manufacturing licenses to larger facilities around the world. Since there is plenty of infrastructure already set up where this type of product can be built, switching over from our current unsustainable and toxic method of production is very possible and should be a high priority, especially considering our environmental state. Sure it might mean disaster for big oil, but isn’t it time we put us and the environment ahead of profit?
    The Radioactive Diamond Battery That Will Run For 28,000 Years
    I wish to share this article from popular mechanics (core MSM site):
    https://www.popularmechanics.com/sci...r-28000-years/
    Quote In two years, one startup says you’ll be able to buy its diamond nuclear-powered battery. Even cooler: The battery will last for up to 28,000 years.
    ➡ You think science is badass. So do we. Let’s nerd out over it together.
    We know—that sounds wild. The potential game-changer comes from the U.S. startup NDB, which stands for Nano Diamond Battery, a “high-power diamond-based alpha, beta, and neutron voltaic battery” its research scientist founders say can give devices “life-long and green energy.”
    Could NDB’s bold claim actually become a reality?
    To build its nano diamond battery, NDB combines radioactive isotopes from nuclear waste with layers of paneled nano diamonds. Diamonds are a rare thing to begin with, but their extremely good heat conductance makes them even more unusual in the realm of construction of devices. Micro-sized single crystal diamonds move heat away from the radioactive isotope materials so quickly that the transaction generates electricity.
    This content is imported from {embed-name}. You may be able to find the same content in another format, or you may be able to find more information, at their web site.
    Scientists presented the first known diamond nuclear voltaic (DNV) battery concept using waste graphite from a graphite-cooled nuclear reactor. The radioactively contaminated graphite could last thousands of years, with the heat-conducting diamonds pulling that energy away into electricity alongside it the whole time. NDB’s concept is the same, but with layers and layers of the diamond and radioactive waste panels to equal higher total amounts of energy.
    power of the battery
    NDB
    You’re probably wondering what the catch is. The diamond battery uses nuclear waste, lasts thousands of years, and involves layers of only the tiniest possible diamonds? That all sounds fantastic. But the truth is more complicated. Each battery cell will produce only a minuscule amount of energy, so the cells must be combined in huge numbers in order to power regular and larger devices.
    There are also some simple questions about logistics. How can a battery made from radioactive waste be safe for human use? There’s a reason it’s so complex and expensive to “dispose of” nuclear waste. It’s also costly to produce the nano diamonds because, well, diamonds are just expensive. That’s before any manufacturing takes place.
    NDB addresses these questions on its corporate site:
    “The DNV stacks along with the source are coated with a layer of poly-crystalline diamond, which is known for being the most thermally conductive material also has the ability to contain the radiation within the device and is the hardest material, [12] times tougher than stainless steel. This makes our product extremely tough and tamperproof.”
    The present day and the future are both littered with applications for a small, almost indestructible battery cell. You could own one watch with a single battery and pass it down for generations without a change. Even nuclear microreactors designed to last decades without any maintenance are made into battery cells.
    Diamond batteries could also power certain kinds of spacecraft like satellites. The 28,000-year claims are based on low-power space applications like this, where, say, a Voyager-like space probe could function on a tiny amount of energy over an extremely long time.
    And if enough of these battery cells are combined, they still could power regular stuff, keeping our small LED displays lit up, for example, while providing thrust for human spacecraft or electric cars.
    After working on its battery since 2012, NDB says it will finally have a working product in 2023. The world will be waiting.
