The stubbing event in Raana at 10:42 was 50m from my office chair. A co-worker seated next to me neutralized the stabber.

I sadly believe the situation is going to escalate before it calms.

Israel seals off East Jerusalem in attempt to quell violence
    http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7...710941,00.html
Quote IDF deploys hundreds of non-combat troops to aid police forces in securing city centers, as checkpoints are set up at entrances to Arab neighborhoods.
Israeli security forces began sealing off East Jerusalem on Wednesday in an attempt to quell violence, as the wave of terror sweeping over the country reached new highs the previous day when five terror attacks claimed the lives of three people and left some 20 wounded.

Police started setting up checkpoints at the entrances to Arab neighborhoods in East Jerusalem.

Several of the entrances to Jabel Mukaber, the neighborhood from which hailed three of Tuesday's terrorists, have already been sealed off - with neither people nor vehicles allowed in or out.

Much of the violence since the start of October has been carried out by residents of East Jerusalem, the predominantly Arab side of the city.

The IDF, meanwhile, deployed hundreds of troops to assist police forces in securing Israeli cities. So far, some 300 soldiers have been teamed up with police forces and deployed for security assignments across the country under police command.

The troops belong to non-combat units, such as military police, Home Front Command soldiers, and soldiers undergoing different military courses. They will be stationed in crowded areas at city centers to increase civilians' sense of security.

In addition, the IDF reinforced the Judea and Samaria Division with two additional battalions. Three reinforcement companies were redeployed to the Seam Zone - an area between the Green Line and Israel's separation barrier in the West Bank. Two battalions in Gaza were redeployed to the border fence amid attempts of Palestinians to infiltrate Israel, and rioting at the crossings.
Drums of war are beating again.
The Jin exited the bottle and cannot be sealed-in again.

Israel stabbing: Israeli man stabs fellow Israeli Jew after 'mistaking him for Arab'
The initial investigations into the incident in Haifa suggest a failed revenge attack

"An Israeli man has been stabbed after another Israeli Jew reportedly mistook him for an Arab, in a failed "revenge attack" on a day of increasing tension and violence in the country.

The injured man, who has yet to be identified, was left with light to moderate wounds after he was stabbed in a car park in the north Israel city of Haifa.

The attack took place in the suburb of Kiryat Ata. Israeli authorities have labelled the incident an apparently misdirected hate crime. The assailant seemily sought to attack an Arab male, in response to a wave of attacks by Palestinians.

According to reports in The Times of Israel, Army Radio, the attacker, an Israeli Jew, approached an Arab man near Kiryat Ata’s Ikea furniture store and asked him if he was, in fact, Arab

The Arab man was reportedly frightened by the question and said he was not. Shortly after this, the attacker approached another passerby, and seemingly concluded he was Arab from his appearance, and proceeded to stab him in his upper torso.

The victim, it turned out, was an Israeli Jew.

The attacker is currently being held in police custody, while the victim was taken to a local hospital with a stab wound in his upper torso.

There have been fresh clashes between Palestinians and Israeli authorities in Bethlehem this afternoon, and attacks in Jerusalem and Ra’anana. In Jerusalem, two Palestinains conducted a deadly attack on a public bus, killing two Israelis, while a separate attack in the capital saw another Israeli killed. " link

A good story of hope and valour, that could only happen on times like these.

Quote How an Israeli Jew went from anti-terror vigilante to stopping an Arab-lynching mob - Israel

When Mimon Himy and his son heard screams of “Terrorist! Terrorist!” in their hometown’s main square they charged forward, ready to deal with an attacker, but instead ended up saving an innocent Arab-Israeli from an angry Jewish mob bent on lynching him.
In this climate of tension and suspicion, people are being targeted solely for being of the "wrong" ethnicity, showing how the wave of stabbing attacks and calls by Israeli officials for civilians to be ready to deal with terrorists risk encouraging a culture of vigilantism. .

Himy’s son Dan, a new army recruit, had the night off and came home to Netanya on Thursday. Father and son had just settled in for a beer in the main square when, says Himy, they heard cries of “Terrorist! Terrorist!” and then “Death to the Arabs!”
“My son picked up a chair and we went running toward the commotion,” says Himy, a 58-year-old religious man who defines himself as “strongly right-wing.”

Their goal was “to kill the terrorist and protect the Jews,” he recalls, but the two quickly realized the scene was not what it seemed.
“There was this Arab running away from the mob with his hands in the air, and no weapon. His face was battered and bloody. I realized this was no terror attack,” says Himy.

Abed al-Kader Jamal, an Israeli citizen from Kalansua, had come into Netanya, a coastal city north of Tel Aviv, to go shopping. Finding the clothes store he wanted to visit closed, he and two friends decided to get cokes instead and go sit at the beach. They never made it there. If it had not been for Himy, who ended up throwing himself on top of Jamal and protecting him with his own body, the event could have ended with the young man being beaten to death.

The 30 or so individuals involved in the attempted lynch “were drunks and homeless people and youngsters with nothing to do, who somehow thought that by attacking an innocent Arab they would be seen to be fighting terror,” Himy says. “This was an act of pure hatred and the perpetrators were acting like animals.”

With tensions running high and stabbings continuing across the country this week, Israeli officials have called on civilians to do their part in dealing with terrorists. Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat, Deputy Defense Minister Eli Ben-Dahan and Ashdod police commander Noam Shekel have urged those who own firearms to carry them at all times so as to “increase security.

Barkat said armed citizens should consider themselves on “reserve duty” and respond with full force if they come upon an attack.

In the case of the Netanya attack, five men involved in the would-be lynch were arrested and the city’s mayor spoke out against their actions.

Since Thursday night’s events, Himy says he has been doing a lot of thinking about why he acted the way he did. His wife complains that he should not have gotten involved, and among the many “likes” he has garnered on his Facebook page from strangers, there are also a fair number of messages directing him to “Go back to Gaza.”

“My main objective in throwing myself into this story was to save Jews,” he repeats, not at all interested in becoming a poster boy for any civil liberties group.

“And actually, I realized later that was exactly what I did,” he concludes. “I saved those Jews from themselves.”

Quote Following the wave of terror attacks across the country, Public Security Minister Gilad Erdan has directed that obtaining permits to carry firearms be made easier. “In light of the security situation I’ve decided to make it easier to obtain a permit for owning a weapon,” he said Wednesday.

“In recent weeks many civilians have assisted the police in stopping terrorists who were carrying out attacks. Civilians who are skilled at using firearms are a multiplier force in our struggle against terrorists, so I’ve taken steps to make obtaining guns easier for now.”

Under the new guidelines, officers with the rank of first lieutenant or higher and NCOs with the rank of master sergeant or higher who are serving in the army as conscripted or reserve soldiers will be entitled to obtain weapons, as will former or current members of special units serving in regular or reserve units. The guidelines also apply to civilians who have taken courses as security guards at the Israel Airports Authority, the Shin Bet security service or any institution approved by Israel Police.

Quote The Israel Defense Forces is preparing for escalation that could last for weeks amid the recent violence throughout Israel, the West Bank and East Jerusalem, but believes that there is no guiding force behind the violence and the attacks are being perpetrated by lone assailants.
    Quote ....
The army has not decided whether to change its policy with regard to troops carrying weapons. Currently, while a good many combat soldiers are armed, it has not been decided whether all soldiers trained to use weapons should carry them, due to concern over the possible theft of weapons that could find their way to criminals as well as terrorists.

Quote Despite a security cabinet decision to set up checkpoints outside volatile Arab neighborhoods in the capital, an attempted attack at Damascus Gate left a terrorist dead on Wednesday, while an Arab man stabbed an Israeli woman at Jerusalem’s Central Bus Station.

The first attack on Wednesday took place at approximately 4:30 p.m., when Border Police stationed near the entrance to the Damascus Gate, on the northern side of the Old City, identified a suspicious Arab man wearing combat fatigues. When officers asked to search the man for a weapon, he pulled a knife from his pocket and charged the officers, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

“Police reacted immediately and fired at him,” Rosenfeld said, adding that the man died minutes later. None of the officers were wounded, he said.

The man was later identified as Basal Sider, 19, of Hebron.
Quote Hours before both incidents, police sealed off the entrances to the capital’s southeastern Jebl Mukaber neighborhood, which is where many recent attackers have hailed from, including three who were either shot and killed or arrested during Tuesday’s wave of attacks.

Several metal detectors have been added throughout the Old City, including at the entrance to the Temple Mount, in an effort to prevent further attacks in the Muslim Quarter.

“Police continue to maintain heightened security in the area and throughout the city,” Rosenfeld said.

Meanwhile, Border Police officers stationed at northeastern Jerusalem’s Shuafat refugee camp arrested a busload of Arab passengers en route to the Old City on Wednesday afternoon, when a search uncovered a knife hidden under a seat, police said.

An investigation determined that the weapon belonged to a 24-year-old man who boarded the bus with an infant.
