    I said: what about my eyes?
    He said: Keep them on the road.

    I said: What about my passion?
    He said: Keep it burning.

    I said: What about my heart?
    He said: Tell me what you hold inside?

    I said: Pain and sorrow.
    He said: Stay with it.

    Who‘s the Erlkönig? The father does not recognize evil. He‘s blind. The kid does.
    The father’s not able to confront evil and protect his child. The kid dies.

    The Erlkönig (Erl King, king of the bad fairies) J. W. Goethe 1782

    (translated by Edgar Alfred Bowring)

    Who rides there so late through the night dark and drear?
    The father it is, with his infant so dear;
    He holdeth the boy tightly clasp’d in his arm,
    He holdeth him safely, he keepeth him warm.
    “My son, wherefore seek’st thou thy face thus to hide?”
    “Look, father, the Erl King is close by our side!
    Dost see not the Erl King, with crown and with train?”
    “My son, ’tis the mist rising over the plain.”
    “Oh, come, thou dear infant! oh come thou with me!
    For many a game I will play there with thee;
    On my beach, lovely flowers their blossoms unfold,
    My mother shall grace thee with garments of gold.”
    “My father, my father, and dost thou not hear
    The words that the Erl King now breathes in mine ear?”
    “Be calm, dearest child, thy fancy deceives;
    the wind is sighing through withering leaves.”
    “Wilt go, then, dear infant, wilt go with me there?
    My daughters shall tend thee with sisterly care
    My daughters by night on the dance floor you lead,
    They’ll cradle and rock thee, and sing thee to sleep.”
    “My father, my father, and dost thou not see,
    How the Erl King is showing his daughters to me?”
    “My darling, my darling, I see it aright,
    ‘Tis the aged grey willows deceiving thy sight.”
    “I love thee, I’m charm’d by thy beauty, dear boy!
    And if thou aren’t willing, then force I’ll employ.”
    “My father, my father, he seizes me fast,
    For sorely the Erl King has hurt me at last.”
    The father now gallops, with terror half wild,
    He holds in his arms the shuddering child;
    He reaches his farmstead with toil and dread,—
    The child in his arms lies motionless, dead.

    This enhanced and stabilized film is a poignant window through time, of ordinary people doing ordinary daily things, on an ordinary cold, grey day in Halifax, England in 1902.

    In the midst of such poverty, children lark for the camera, two men play at fisticuffs, the local fire station put on a show. No obesity, tattoos, or people walking in a trance with headphones on, or staring at their mobile phones. This is how we were...

    I wonder what we'll look like an another 117 years?

    -
    A few grotty comments but some thought-provoking ones too:

    All were dirt poor but they dressed smartly, clean white shirts and ties, hats and coats. Self respect is abundantly clear.

    People looked happier than they do today

    O happier times, they had less materialism, but more happiness

    And to think in just 12 short years after this was filmed their world would change so drastically.

    We've moved so far forward with our technology, our clothing, our transportation. Yet deteriorated so much in unity and spiritual happiness!

    (apologies for the words in an images thread).
    "When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace."

    In My Mother‘s Arms

    The film was shot 2010 in Baghdad though it happens any year, in any land.

    Filmmakers: Mohamed al-Daradji and Atia al-Daradji

    The documentary tells the remarkable story of Husham Al Thabe, a middle class Iraqi man in his thirties, who struggles to house and care for 32 orphaned young boys in the modest two bedroom house he rents in Al-Sadar district, one of Baghdad’s poorest and most dangerous districts and a hub of sectarian violence. He does this because he can’t bear to see the boys, who have already experienced the trauma of losing their families, go back to state run orphanages where there is rampant sexual and physical abuse and neglect.

    Real people, real words, real feelings, from another time.

    Some fascinating old timers here, some so old they would've known people when they were younger who were alive in the 1700s.

    CAPTURING THE SOUL OF THE EARTH

    After having read an estimated ton of travel reports over the last years, I‘ve come across the blog of photographer and cyclist Nicolas Marino. He cycled from China across Asia and continued from Egypt around Africa, all on rural roads in remote regions to avoid the traffic of the main routes, but above all to connect with people and the spirit of the land.

    In more than eighty short reports and hundreds of pictures he outlines this incredible adventure which is all about his encounters with the people across the continent. I have to choose one example randomly, else I wouldn‘t know where to start.
