Only a week ago I came back from four days in Paris. Apart from three guards outside the National Assembly, we remarked on the fact that we saw no police presence anywhere. Only at the Institut du Monde Arabe, an unlikely target for Arab terrorism, was there airport-type baggage screening equipment at the entrance to an exhibition of Egyptian underwater discoveries. We had to pass through it suitcases that we had with us because to fight terrorism there is no left-luggage office at the station.
I am not drawing any conclusions from the above observation, beyond the general feeling of normality. Wherever we went, Parisians were out relaxing in the unusually beautiful weather: the sort of pleasantly normal atmosphere that these attacks are designed to shatter. There seems to be a studied attempt to make sure life goes on, like Londoners did during the Blitz. Perhaps this is a healthier reaction than all the hysteria in the media, in government, and dare I say it, in the alternative media as well. When conspiracy theory goes into overdrive, putting every tiny detail under the microscope, the alternative media tend to be prey to this same hysteria that is a major part of the problem in the first place. Note, I am NOT saying any of this research is either wrong in principle or incorrect in detail.
A couple of times we were at the bottom end of Boulevard Beaumarchais (nearer the location of the Charlie Hebdo shooting towards the Place de la Bastille) – the same street where makeshift hospitals were set up at the top end on Friday night. These new attacks are a follow-through after the Charlie Hebdo incidents, taking place where the peace marches were held in January and inretaliation to those demonstrations. From the Place de la République to the Bastille, the whole area has street names recalling the Enlightenment and Republican values (in the French meaning of Republican) that are being undermined here –

Last week I was talking to a highly intelligent person who has always lived in a suburb with a large Arab population, and now expresses extreme views that he recognizes as abhorrent, but are drawn from personal experience. A week before President Hollande, he was telling us that we are at war. Wherever this war is taking place, it is definitely in our minds. If we keep it there, and keep our minds, then perhaps we can do something about it. A concept like war does not do that: it expands conflict to the widest possible area outside of the individual mind: sheer mindlessness at home and abroad. What we have here is not war, but high crimes by a small number of individuals who happen to be in positions of power with self-bestowed immunity. War as major conflict between large nations is a toy that they no longer possess as people wise up to the situation. No one was signing up to fight a war after the Charlie Hebdo attacks: they marched in peace rallies; and they had got their lives back to a semblance of normality. This was apparently enough to launch into another losing battle.
I don’t much care what governments do: they have become pretty out of touch and irrelevant. You have to know what they are up to without succumbing to horrified fascination, which is still a form of powerlessness. This is a time when the grassroots get to show their mettle and their strength in numbers. What governments do is unimportant since they are proving their ineffectiveness by relying on a few individuals whom they have made suicidally insane to trigger their nuclear conflagration. It will not work against millions of healthy lovers of life. This time the clear target was not some political cartoonists lampooning a prophet: it was the general public, enjoying a football match, a rock concert, a drink or a meal with friends. Regrettably, the demonstrations we saw in January have been banned, so the general public are going to have to find new ways of making their statement.
One practical way forward would be to learn about astrology, and use it to counter the black magic mentioned by Flash. Astrology is largely public domain and there is nothing anyone can do to stop ordinary people from engaging in a huge amount of white magic if they put their minds to it.
