    Satellite images taken by NASA in August 2014 revealed that for the first time in modern history the eastern basin of the Aral Sea had completely dried up:




    The Great Salt Lake in Utah, U.S. in 1985, left, and 2010, right:


    Lake Meredith in 1990 and 2011:

    Lake Meredith is an artificial lake formed by the Sanford Dam in Texas.

    The Caspian Sea, the largest body of inland water in the world, in 1972, 1987 and 2010:

    The centre image shows the loss of water and large salt bowl region due to the blocking of the Caspian in 1980. In 1992 the barrier was breached and allowed the Caspian's water levels to rise, which is visible in the 2010 image.

    Wadi As-Sirhan Basin in Saudi Arabia in 1987 and 2012:

    Water reserves up to a kilometre deep underground have been tapped to allow farmers to grow grain, fruits and vegetables in the desert.

    Samuel Dam, on the Jamari River in Brazil, in 1984 and 2011:

    In the 1984 image construction work had just begun on the hydroelectric dam. In 2011 the image shows the reservoir created by the dam and areas of deforestation.

    Jakarta, the most populous city in Southeast Asia and the twelfth largest city in the world in 1976, 1989 and 2004:

    The image on the left was taken when the population was six million. The middle image was taken when the population was nine million and the right picture was taken when the population was 13 million.

    Atlantic coast of Morocco in 1985 and 2011:

    The 2011 images shows the increased urban growth of these cities compared to the 1985 image.

    Binhai, on the coast of the Bohai Sea, China in 1992 and 2012:

    Binhai was transformed in 1990 from a swampy region into a major economic zone. It is currently home to numerous aerospace, oil and chemical, and other manufacturing industries.
