What do space rock pioneers Jon Anderson of Yes and Daevid Allen of Gong have in common?

None other than actor Sherman Hemsley aka George Jefferson of the long-running All In The Family spin-off sitcom The Jeffersons.

Hemsley, a keyboardist with a background in jazz as well as a veteran of the Air Force and Broadway, was a dedicated fan of the "progressive" rock movement of the 70's and beyond. He once appeared on The Dinah Shore Show and spent his entire segment extolling the virtues of Gentle Giant to the baffled and smiling talk show hostess.

In this episode of The Jeffersons, "Sherm" managed to convince the writers to include the music of one of his favorite bands, Nektar:

In the late 90's, Hemsley collaborated with Yes vocalist Jon Anderson on what was described as a "funk-rock opera" entitled Festival Of Dreams, which examined the spiritual qualities of the number seven. After failing to find financial backing for what was intended to be a musical for the stage, the project was abandoned and the music remains, sadly, unreleased.

    Daevid Allen:

"It was 1978 or 1979, and Sherman Hemsley kept ringing me up. I didn't know him from a bar of soap because we didn't have television in Spain (where I was living). He called me from Hollywood saying, 'I'm one of your biggest fans and I'm going to fly you here and put Flying Teapots all up and down the Sunset Strip.' I thought, 'This guy is a lunatic.' He kept it up so I said, 'Listen, can you get us tickets to LA via Jamaica? I want to go there and make a reggae track and have a honeymoon with my new girlfriend.' He says, 'Sure! I'll get you two tickets.'

I thought, 'Well, even if he's a nutcase at least he's coming up with the goods.' The tickets arrived and we had this great honeymoon in Jamaica. Then we caught the plane across to LA. We had heard Sherman was a big star, but we didn't know the details. Coming down the corridor from the plane we see this black guy with a whole bunch of people running after him trying to get autographs. Anyway, we get into this stretch limousine with Sherman and immediately there's this big joint being passed around. I say, 'Sorry man, I don't smoke.' He says, 'You don't smoke and you're from Gong?'

Inside the front door of Sherman's house was a sign saying, 'Don't answer the door because it might be the Man.' There were two Puerto Ricans who had an LSD laboratory in his basement, so they were really paranoid. They also had little freebase depots on every floor. Then Sherman says, 'Come on upstairs and I'll show you the Flying Teapot room.' Sherman was very sweet but was surrounded by these really crazy people.

We went up to the top floor and there was this big room with darkened windows and "Flying Teapot" is playing on a tape loop over and over again. There were also three dumb-looking, very voluptuous Southern gals stoned and wobbling around naked. They were obviously there for the guys to play around with.

My girlfriend and I were really tired and went to our room to go to bed. The next day we came down (and) Sherman took us to see these Hollywood PR people. They said, 'Well, Mr Hemsley wants us to get the information we need in order to do these Flying Teapot billboards on Sunset Strip.' I looked at them and thought they were the cheesiest, most nasty people I had ever seen in my life and I gave them the runaround. I just wanted out of there. I liked Sherman a lot. He was a very personable, charming guy. I just had a lot of trouble with the people around him."

Is it mere coincidence that David Bowie named his band The Spiders From Mars?

    From Grant Cameron's website: http://whitehouseufo.blogspot.com

As a youth David Bowie believed that aliens were visiting him at night to study his habits. In 1969 he contributed to a UFO magazine reporting that he was having 6 or 7 sightings a night for a year. According to drummer Mick "Woody" Woodmansey, Bowie believed that aliens were following him around trying to influence his thoughts.

There's a starman waiting in the sky
He'd like to come and meet us
But he thinks he'd blow our minds
There's a starman waiting in the sky
He's told us not to blow it
'Cause he thinks it's all worthwhile
    He told me
    Let the children lose it
    Let the children lose it
    Let the children boogie
La la la la la la la la

    **
For musicologists: Bowie has stated that this song is loosely based on "Somewhere Over The Rainbow". The octave leap in the word "starman" is identical to the octave leap in the word "somewhere".

In the summer of 1974 New Yorkers were suffering through one of their periodic heat waves. The date was August 23, a Friday night, and in an effort to beat the heat John Lennon and then-girlfriend May Pang had taken their clothes off while they waited for a pizza to be delivered.

    Lennon described the scene:

"I was lying naked on my bed, when I had this urge. I went to the window, just dreaming around in my usual poetic frame of mind ... There, as I turned my head, hovering over the next building no more than 100 feet away was this thing with electric light bulbs flashing on and off round the bottom, one non-blinking red light on top. I was completely sober. The thing I noticed was that there was no noise ..."

    May Pang:

"As I walked out to the terrace, my eye caught this large, circular object coming toward us. It was shaped like a flattened cone, and on top was a large, brilliant red light, not pulsating like on any of the aircraft we'd see heading for a landing at Newark (Airport). When it came a little closer, we could see a row or circle of white lights that ran around the entire rim of the craft - these were also flashing on and off. There were so many of these lights it was dazzling to the mind. It was, I estimate, about the size of a two-man Lear jet and it was so close that if we had something to throw at it, we probably would have hit it quite easily."

Too stunned to move, the couple stood transfixed for about 5 to 10 minutes as they stared at the unusual hovering craft. Lennon called the New York City Police Department, as did at least 7 others to report the same sighting. According to Pang, Lennon spent the rest of the evening wandering around the apartment in a daze, murmuring, "I can't believe it ... I can't believe it ... I've seen a flying saucer ..."

He drew several pictures of what he had seen, and included one in the cover art for his Walls And Bridges album.

Ever since his debut album The Transformed Man was released by Decca Records in 1968, actor William Shatner has boldly gone forth with his musical career despite nearly non-stop criticism and ridicule, and I for one am more than willing to take my space cowboy hat off in tribute to the venerated "Cap'n Kairk" ...

International readers and fans may be surprised or amused to learn that the music of Robbie Williams is relatively unknown in America, perhaps the only country in the world where this seems to be the case. Since his public debut with Take That in 1990, Williams has sold more than 77 million records worldwide. A long list of accolades include seventeen Brit Awards, eight German ECHO Awards, three MTV Europe Awards, an induction into the UK Music Hall of Fame, and a Guinness Book of World Records entry for fastest selling concert tour. He saw his first UFO as a child. In 2007, he briefly "retired" from the music business and grew a beard to devote more time to his study of the paranormal.

    Robbie Williams:

"I was at the Beverly Hills Hotel and I was lying on my sun lounger outside at night, looking up. Then, about three hundred feet above me, there was this square thing which just passed over my head silently and then shot off."

In a recording studio, he saw "a big strip of black light" suddenly appear in the room. "It was about three inches thick and it shot from one end of the room out of the window. Its absolutely bonkers."

"The next one was the weirdest yet. I'd just written a song called "Arizona" and its all about alien contact and I was playing that. I stood on the balcony and there was this big ball of gold light that turned up. We thought it was Venus or Mars or something. Then the song stops playing and it disappears. But then we put it on again and the ball turned back up. It happened four times. After that a massive electrical storm started and these two big massive balls of light started dancing in the sky. It was like a whole light show for about an hour."

Tom DeLonge has fronted the rock bands Angels & Airwaves and Blink-182, who as of this writing have a new single out, "Bored To Death", and have sold more than 35 million albums to date. DeLonge has made no secret of his interest in the UFO phenomenon since becoming a public figure in the early 90's, and has spent time and money pursuing this interest. In 2016 he launched a multimedia production company, Sekret Machines, and released a work of fiction, Chasing Shadows, co-written with mystery novelist AJ Hartley. This will join The Lonely Astronaut On Christmas Eve and Poet Anderson: ...Of Nightmares on the DeLonge bookshelf. The singer will manage Sekret Machines along with his other business interests which include Macbeth Footwear and website design firm Modlife. He has calmly stated to reporters he has had experiences which some would describe as "paranormal".

    Tom DeLonge:

"We (camped) outside of a secret base called China Lake. And that was on the flight path to Area 51, which is known as Groom Lake. We camped out at the northern end of that ... We had about four logs on the fire, and everything is illuminated by the fire, and we fall asleep around one or two. I woke up right around three am. My whole body felt like it had static electricity, and I open my eyes and the fire is still going, and there's a conversation going on outside the tent. It sounded like there were about 20 people there, talking. And instantly my mind goes, OK, they're at our campsite, they're not here to hurt us, they're talking about sh-t, but I can't make out what they're saying. But they're working on something. Then I close my eyes and wake up, and the fire is out and I have about three hours of lost time."

(Edit: As of July '16 DeLonge is no longer a member of Blink-182)

Oh my goodness gracious it is a plethora
A lavish luscious decadent feast of high quality heavy duty space rock
    All hits all the time

    I wish I was a spaceman

    Way out in space together
    Conquores of the skies
My heart would be a fireball
    Fireball
Every time I gaze into your starry eyes

We'd take the path to Jupiter
    And maybe very soon
We'd cruise along the Milky Way
    And land upon the Moon
    To a wonderland of stardust
We'll zoom our way to Mars
My heart would be a fireball
    Fireball
Cause you would be my Venus of the stars
