Explosive cyclogenesis in North Atlantic Ocean

As expected, the impressive cyclone we discussed yesterday has gone through an incredibly rapid intensification and deepened below 940 mbar this morning. A very deep cyclone (a "weather bomb") is moving across the north Atlantic and is expected to pass just west of Iceland tomorrow before it hits south Greenland overnight to Friday.

Mean sea level pressure analysis reveals the central pressure had already fallen below 940 mbar by this morning, into 938-939 mbar range. Notice the incredibly steep pressure gradient through the NW and SW quadrants of the system - this is undoubtedly producing some violent winds, in excess of 150 km/h!

Attached are a couple of impressive IR/WV satellite images of the cyclone, displaying textbook structure of the system with embedded mesovortices in the core. We are awaiting more satellite imagery this afternoon when high-res visible spectrum Terra imagery will be available.

The cyclone developed yesterday afternoon when a deep trough/wave ejected from eastern Canada into the warmer Atlantic ocean. It has gone through rapid intensification since then and entered explosive cyclogenesis - also called 'bombogenesis' - phase, in which the cyclone deepens by more than 24 mbar within a 24-hour period. This monster cyclone more than doubled this rate! Attached is the graphic for the ocean buoy in the NW Atlantic which was almost directly hit by cyclone's center. The pressure change was an incredibly impressive 51 mbar within only 19 hours - from 1003 mbar to 952 mbar!

The future track of the cyclone will bring it across the north Atlantic, nearing Iceland tomorrow and then making landfall in Greenland overnight to Friday. The central pressure should continue dropping today and could approach 930 mbar at its peak intensity. Then it begins rising overnight and tomorrow when it reaches around 950 mbar before it hits Greenland.

I took this screenshot of the real-time readout from a local UV measuring station on 14 Feb, just 5 days ago. The level spiked at 18, which is 60% higher than the regularly described 'extreme-so-stay-indoors' level of 11. (18 is crazy-high, and dangerous. 11 is as high as any internet UV charts go.)

11 is high enough but 18 seems unbelievably high.

I have noticed very high UV levels here over the last year or so. Today it's overcast after about 24 hours of intense rain; the UV for my area is 9 today. For a nearby town, Mountain View, at a higher elevation it says 11. I may have to look for more accurate UV charts for this island.

We are located just below the Tropic of Cancer so one would expect higher levels but these are higher than usual.

Even here in northern michigan I've had conversations with carpenters who work outside all day long, my one buddy said the sun is way hotter than it use to be. Then on the flip side 2 mornings ago it was -14 to -20 below in the am. We have a bunch of snow on the ground and now this evening a little while ago it was raining and then it turned to freezing rain.

Earth's Magnetic Field is acting up and geologists don’t know why

Erratic motion of north magnetic pole forces experts to update model that aids global navigation.

Update, 9 January: The release of the World Magnetic Model has been postponed to 30 January due to the ongoing US government shutdown.

Something strange is going on at the top of the world. Earth’s north magnetic pole has been skittering away from Canada and towards Siberia, driven by liquid iron sloshing within the planet’s core. The magnetic pole is moving so quickly that it has forced the world’s geomagnetism experts into a rare move.

On 15 January, they are set to update the World Magnetic Model, which describes the planet’s magnetic field and underlies all modern navigation, from the systems that steer ships at sea to Google Maps on smartphones.

The most recent version of the model came out in 2015 and was supposed to last until 2020 — but the magnetic field is changing so rapidly that researchers have to fix the model now. “The error is increasing all the time,” says Arnaud Chulliat, a geomagnetist at the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA’s) National Centers for Environmental Information.

The problem lies partly with the moving pole and partly with other shifts deep within the planet. Liquid churning in Earth’s core generates most of the magnetic field, which varies over time as the deep flows change. In 2016, for instance, part of the magnetic field temporarily accelerated deep under northern South America and the eastern Pacific Ocean. Satellites such as the European Space Agency’s Swarm mission tracked the shift.

By early 2018, the World Magnetic Model was in trouble. Researchers from NOAA and the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh had been doing their annual check of how well the model was capturing all the variations in Earth’s magnetic field. They realized that it was so inaccurate that it was about to exceed the acceptable limit for navigational errors.

“That was an interesting situation we found ourselves in,” says Chulliat. “What’s happening?” The answer is twofold, he reported last month at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in Washington DC.

First, that 2016 geomagnetic pulse beneath South America came at the worst possible time, just after the 2015 update to the World Magnetic Model. This meant that the magnetic field had lurched just after the latest update, in ways that planners had not anticipated.



Second, the motion of the north magnetic pole made the problem worse. The pole wanders in unpredictable ways that have fascinated explorers and scientists since James Clark Ross first measured it in 1831 in the Canadian Arctic. In the mid-1990s it picked up speed, from around 15 kilometres per year to around 55 kilometres per year. By 2001, it had entered the Arctic Ocean — where, in 2007, a team including Chulliat landed an aeroplane on the sea ice in an attempt to locate the pole.

In 2018, the pole crossed the International Date Line into the Eastern Hemisphere. It is currently making a beeline for Siberia.

The geometry of Earth’s magnetic field magnifies the model’s errors in places where the field is changing quickly, such as the North Pole. “The fact that the pole is going fast makes this region more prone to large errors,” says Chulliat.

To fix the World Magnetic Model, he and his colleagues fed it three years of recent data, which included the 2016 geomagnetic pulse. The new version should remain accurate, he says, until the next regularly scheduled update in 2020.

Core questions
In the meantime, scientists are working to understand why the magnetic field is changing so dramatically. Geomagnetic pulses, like the one that happened in 2016, might be traced back to ‘hydromagnetic’ waves arising from deep in the core1. And the fast motion of the north magnetic pole could be linked to a high-speed jet of liquid iron beneath Canada2.

The jet seems to be smearing out and weakening the magnetic field beneath Canada, Phil Livermore, a geomagnetist at the University of Leeds, UK, said at the American Geophysical Union meeting. And that means that Canada is essentially losing a magnetic tug-of-war with Siberia.

“The location of the north magnetic pole appears to be governed by two large-scale patches of magnetic field, one beneath Canada and one beneath Siberia,” Livermore says. “The Siberian patch is winning the competition.”

Which means that the world’s geomagnetists will have a lot to keep them busy for the foreseeable future.

Cosmic rays intensifying for the 4th year in a row

Cosmic rays in the stratosphere are intensifying for the 4th year in a row.

This finding comes from a campaign of almost weekly high-altitude balloon launches conducted by the students of Earth to Sky Calculus. Since March 2015, there has been a ~13% increase in X-rays and gamma-rays over central California, where the students have launched hundreds of balloons.

The grey points in the graph are Earth to Sky balloon data. Overlaid on that time series is a record of neutron monitor data from the Sodankyla Geophysical Observatory in Oulu, Finland. The correlation between the two data sets is impressive, especially considering their wide geographic separation and differing methodologies. Neutron monitors have long been considered a "gold standard" for monitoring cosmic rays on Earth. This shows that our student-built balloons are gathering data of similar quality.

Why are cosmic rays increasing? The short answer is "Solar Minimum." Right now, the 11-year solar cycle is plunging into one of the deepest minima of the Space Age. The sun's weakening magnetic field and flagging solar wind are not protecting us as usual from deep-space radiation. Earth to Sky balloon launches in multiple countries and US states show that this is a widespread phenomenon.

Cosmic rays are of interest to anyone who flies on airplanes. The International Commission on Radiological Protection has classified pilots as occupational radiation workers because of cosmic ray doses they receive while flying. A recent study by researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health shows that flight attendants face an elevated risk of cancer compared to members of the general population. They listed cosmic rays as one of several risk factors. There are also controversial studies that suggest cosmic rays promote the formation of clouds in the atmosphere; if so, increasing cosmic rays could affect weather and climate.

Came across these videos and a blog that got my attention in regards to geoengineering. We can all sense something is not right with the weather, for me it started a few years ago when flowers were blooming when they shouldn't be , In a time where we have real time data and news from anywhere on the earth, I suppose these events could be just exploited and have been going on for millions of years, however with us literally trashing the oceans with radioactive water, sanitary run offs from cities and just plain dumping trash into the oceans along with all the spraying in the skies , and all the wireless noise that we can't see, and the burning down of the amazon rain forest. I would say we are pissing off mother earth big time and creating a shxxhole for generations to come in the future. There is definitely a gap with advanced technology to the common human beings daily routine. Corporate agendas want to keep things the way they are by being dependent on fossil fuels , only those in charge need to see the light as if we continue to stay on that path they will have nothing to be in charge of. I've always said greed breeds stupidity. I pray the newer upcoming generations can change the course of where we are headed, because it sure doesn't look good at all. Imagine 300 tons of nuclear waste per day since the accident, almost eight years ago. I have known this and stopped buying salmon and tuna. Here in FL our waters have been so terrible from ongoing red tide and algae that I am afraid to eat our fish as well.
With regards to the geoengineering also pouring barium and ammonia and aluminum etc into the oceans and on land, then we have nuclear radiation contamination from Japan pouring into our oceans. I think its fair to say our seafood days have ended. I see my grocery stores selling Alaskan salmon! People are buying it unknowingly. Our environment is ruined and breaking down fast. You can't fix this. And the lunatics ruling us and spraying us just keep on truckin, they are putting silica glass in to the arctic ocean since 2017 because all sea ice is gone now. The silica is supposed to mimic natural ice to reflect heat from ocean absorption. That is in addition to putting ice nucleating chemicals, barium and ammonia, in to that ocean also creating a slushy ice like surface extent. Fake chemical ice that on radar looks like a chemical spill!
There is no natural left and imagine how much worse when all those ice chemicals from up there make their way through the environment! That silica project is called ice911 dot org. The site is a gigantic propaganda advertising plug for geoengineering, with a video telling us how wonderful and safe this climate attempt is, oh, and how successful it is also! Australia’s ‘record-setting’ extreme summer

Australia’s summer of 2018-19 has broken more than 200 extreme weather records, becoming the hottest in history, according to a new Climate Council report.

The report released on Thursday morning delivers a dire warning about climate change upon declaring that Australia has posted its hottest summer on record.

It reveals 206 weather records were broken in just 90 days around the country, highlighting the extremes Australians have dealt with over the past three months.

Port Augusta in South Australia reached a record breaking 49.5 degrees Celsius in January, while every state experienced serious bushfires and Townsville broke its 10-day accumulated rainfall total.

“Now, hot on the heels of Australia’s ‘angriest summer’, we have autumn fires burning across parts of Victoria,” former NSW Fire and Rescue commissioner Greg Mullins said.

“Climate change has lengthened bushfire seasons.

“In Victoria, the fire season started early. This has put a great deal of pressure on fire fighters; we simply don’t have the resources for this new reality.”

“This summer was so hot we witnessed fruit cooking on trees,” Climate Council chief executive Amanda McKenzie said.

“In Melbourne, the Australian Tennis Open had to implement its new extreme-heat policy, postponing matches, as temperatures soared,” she said.

The report says the record-breaking summer was driven by greenhouse gas pollution from the burning of fossil fuels and land clearing.

Australia experienced widespread heatwaves during the last week of December into early January, with temperature records exceeded across a large area from northwest Western Australia to southeastern Australia, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Five of Australia’s ten highest December mean daily minimum temperatures occurred in 2018.

Australia’s 2016/17 summer broke 205 extreme weather records as summer temperatures soared to unprecedented new heights, with capital cities such as Sydney experiencing its hottest summer on record.

The 2016/17 extreme summer heat in New South Wales was at least 50 times more likely to occur due to climate change, according to the Climate Council’s report titled “Angry Summer 2016/17: Climate Change Supercharging Extreme Weather”.

NSW, Brisbane and Sydney had its hottest summer on record, with a state-wide mean temperature of 2.57 degrees, 2.8 degrees and 1.7 degrees above average, respectively.

It’s time to freak-out! Violent climate change is here now! The unthinkable has happened and will continue to happen. We have never seen catastrophic flooding like this. “The scope of this historic disaster has touched nearly every aspect of Nebraska,” Col. Michael Manion said in the early days as record floods devastated a wide swath of the Farm Belt across Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota and several other states. Stories and images have been surfacing showing the complete and utter chaos Nebraska is in, a chaos which quickly spread to other states.

Early estimates of lost crops and livestock are approaching $3 billion, and that figure is expected to rise as flooding is now predicted to last well into May. The flooding on fields will render them all but impossible to use. Fields that are normally used for growing beans, corn, and grain are under tons of snow or several feet of water. This means these fields will more than likely not produce a crop this year.

More than 200 million people in 25 states are at risk, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) warned. Large parts of the U.S. will experience a “potentially unprecedented flood season” through May as forecasts anticipate record levels of precipitation.

Its an agricultural wipe out, which has very little to do with temperature and everything to do with increased precipitation in form of snow and rain. ‘It looked like an ocean’ from the early days. Gov. Kim Reynolds warned Iowans that the snow-melt and spring rains would create additional flooding in the weeks ahead because of compromised levees.

The devastating flooding came at worst possible time for Midwest farmers. There is no denying that the weather, the actual climate has been changing violently. The why is important. What needs to be explained is the dramatically increased precipitation and where the trend line is going. We have to turn to science for this, to astrophysics, which tells us that increasing cosmic radiation is seeding more clouds causing more rain and snow, much more. One of the classical characteristics of Grand Solar Minimums is increased cosmic rays creating more cloud coverage and much more precipitation.

That is exactly what is happening causing flooding not just in the central and eastern USA but also in many other places around the world where flooding is killing people and destroying crops. It would already be an utter national nightmare even if the flooding was all over, but NOAA is informing us the nightmare is just beginning with catastrophic flooding continuing for the next two months.

It is wipe out conditions for way too many farmers. Absolute end of times for them, certainly and end for much food production this year and anyone thinking the human race has that much reserves of food on hand is dreaming. Huge areas of the country are affected implying immense agricultural losses. When the waters recede later in the spring the damage to the rural roads, bridges and rail lines will begin to emerge. This infrastructure is critical for the US. agricultural sector to move products from farms to processing plants and shipping hubs. Roads, rail lines and entire small towns have been washed away, and so even if farmers had something left to sell they couldn’t get it to market anyway. Also the damage to roads means it will be harder for trucks to deliver seed to farmers for the coming planting season if there is even going to be one.

Everything is going wrong at once so we are witnessing an agricultural disaster that is far beyond anything that we have ever seen before in American history. Millions of acres of farmland are underwater and will stay that way for months to come.

Food Reserves Lost Too
We have also witnessed the loss of massive stockpiles of wheat, corn and soybeans that had been stashed away as farmers hoped for a price increase. According to U.S. Department of Agriculture as of Dec. 1, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin and Illinois – had 6.75 billion bushels of corn, soybeans and wheat stored on their farms. The amount of food that has just been lost is absolutely staggering. Due to the trade war, farmers were storing more wheat, corn and soybeans than ever before, and now the floodwaters have destroyed much of what had been stored. So future and past production is being wiped out together.

Economic Effects
Before we even look at other agricultural disasters, that are becoming disturbingly frequent, it is important to note that, “There are macroeconomic shocks associated with the infrastructure damage, agricultural losses, and commodity price spikes caused by droughts, floods, and hurricanes amplified by climate change,” according to Glenn Rudebusch, the San Francisco Fed’s executive vice president. Meaning climate change could spur a financial crisis.

If one reads the mass media one will not be alarmed at what is happening in the belly of America even though huge parts of many states are suddenly underwater. This suggests huge infrastructure damage, enormous agricultural losses, the threat of sharp price increases for food, and the sheer drop in economic activity across many state lines is not being priced in on financial markets but it should be.

Olive Oil Catastrophe
“We are getting more and more into this complex climate situation of extremes,” Riccardo Valentini told CNN. “In terms of production, probably we can expect this decline occurring more and more, if we’re not able to cope with this.” CNN reports that bad weather and frost have crippled the olive oil industry in recent months, causing a 57% drop in production over 2018 and costing the sector almost 1 billion euros ($1.13bn).

Things are so bad in Italy that they soon could be forced to import olive oil to stem a dramatic decline in production, a climate scientist has warned, as extreme weather events wreak havoc with harvests and threaten a shortage of one of the country’s most essential culinary products. Puglia, the southern region which produces most of the country’s olive oil, was worst affected, with the region seeing a “real massacre of 25 million olive trees,”

Climate Change and the Potato Apocalypse
After a devastating potato growing season, 500 million pounds of Canadian potatoes are feared wasted and many of the survivors are misshapen and undersized, threatening to turn french fries short and brown. The United Potato Growers of Canada announced they suffered a trifecta of bad weather across the country —a late spring, a hot summer and a cold fall — saw an estimated 6,000 hectares abandoned. United Potato Growers general manager Kevin MacIsaac said, “I’ve been involved in the industry myself for 25-plus years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” he told the Financial Post. “It’s pretty bad right now.”

Mexico
Even down to Mexicocrops were destroyed with the snow and cold of this past winter. Heavy snowfall left by the fifth and sixth winter storms of the season generated frost damage in thousands of crops throughout the state of Sonora.

In Guaymas, Cajeme, and Navojoa, which encompass the valleys south of Sonora, agricultural producers are analyzing damage in 12 thousand hectares of crops. Renan Cruz, president of the Association of Producers of Vegetables of the Yaqui and Mayo, said that thousands of hectares planted with squash, chilli, potatoes, and tomatillo, had been affected by the frosts, and that the damages ranged from partial issues to total losses. Corn and bean crops were also affected.

Dramatic Climate Change Everywhere

Farmers who managed to keep their cattle alive for seven years, through one of Australia’s worst droughts in history, have watched their herds wiped out in a matter of days after unprecedented floods devastated much of Queensland.

If the cattle have not drowned or frozen to death in the elements, devastated farmers now face having to kill thousands of animals. The situation is so terrible that there are reports the farmers have run out of bullets. Australia’s largest cattle company has warned of “extreme losses” after record-breaking floods, as producers said more than 300,000 cows were drowned or washed away in the vast continent’s northeast. The number of estimated dead is now 500,000 dead cows.

In America it was not the flooding that did the cows in but heavy snowfall, gale-force winds and extreme cold hit multiple dairying regions in Idaho and Washington in midwinter leaving nearly 2,000 dairy cows dead. Dairy farmers who had been in the business their entire lives said they had never seen anything like it, said Kimmi Devaney of the Dairy Farmers of Washington. With the cold gone and the floods in we do not yet know how many cows have died but we do know that the numbers are astronomically higher. Early accounts counted a million calves lost in the flooding.

Flash floods in southern Iran have killed at least 17 people and injured 74. Hundreds of thousands of people are in need of food, water and shelter after Cyclone Idai battered Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. As of Monday, at least 686 people had been reported killed by the storm, the flooding it caused and heavy rains before it hit.

Conclusion
Climatologist Judith Curry is rocking climate change zealots. In her latest paper, Ms. Curry found that the current rising sea levels are not abnormal, nor can they be pinned on human-caused climate change, arguing that the oceans have been on a “slow creep” for the last 150 years — before the post-1950 climb in carbon-dioxide emissions.

Greenland’s biggest glacier, the Jakobshavn glacier, began advancing rapidly (almost 26 feet per day!) in 2016. Airborne altimetry and satellite imagery show that the glacier is advancing about 1.8 miles and ice thickening nearly 130 feet annually, according to NASA, according to a study published in Nature Geoscience. It is very hard to see the north pole full of ice and hear about the northern hemisphere biggest glacier growing and not doubt the global warming hysteria.

Yet hotter or colder, the climate is changing. Its getting colder, hotter in some places, more snow, more rain, more floods, more drought, more big storms, more of everything including glacial ice. In this time of dramatic climate change we also have volcanoes exploding and more earthquakes, also predictable from past periods of climate change in conjunction with grand solar minimums.

Does not matter what you believe in the end, no one can ignore the FACT that we are experiencing a grand solar minimum and violent climate change that goes with it. It can be ignored, but not denied. In February we did not have one sun spot. Solar activity is declining and for sure we know it's not from too much CO2.

South America - Thousands affected by floods and landslides in Paraguay, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Colombia

Heavy rain has triggered flooding and landslides in parts of South America over the last few days.

Around 70,000 people are currently affected by floods in several departments of Paraguay. Flooding and landslides in Peru have damaged or destroyed dozens of homes and prompted evacuations in the regions of Ancash, Amazonas and Cusco.

In Ecuador, flooding in Los Ríos Province has prompted authorities to declare a state of emergency in several cantons, while in Bolivia, over 2,000 hectares of crops and 109 homes have been destroyed by flooding from the overflowing Parapetí River in Santa Cruz Department.

Paraguay
Heavy rain and flooding has affected thousands of people in Paraguay over the last 2 weeks. As of 15 March, the worst affected areas were in the departments of Presidente Hayes, Concepción and Guairá.

Since then flooding has been reported in Alto Paraguay Department, with the districts of Fuerte Olimpo, Bahía Negra, Carmelo Peralta, Puerto Casado, and Puerto Guaran declaring a state of emergency. Elsewhere, flooding along the Pilcomayo River has affected areas of Boquerón department.

As of 25 March, Paraguay's National Emergency Secretariat (SEN), reported that the total number of families affected by the recent had increased from around 7,000 to 12,634 families. Of these, 8,495 were assisted by the National Government and received food and other basic supplies. Flooding has also been reported in areas of Paraguarí, Cordillera, Amambay, Central, San Pedro and Alto Paraná departments.

Peru
Intense rainfall on 27 March, 2019, caused landslides and flash flooding in the town of Angascancha, Pomabamba Province, Ancash Region. Local emergency management authorities said that around 20 houses were damaged and 40 people evacuated.

Elsewhere in the country, flooding from the overflowing Maranon river that began around 25 March has destroyed 25 houses in the district of Cumba in the province of Utcubamba, Amazonas Region, according to Peru's National Institute of Civil Defense (Indeci). Twenty-five families have been evacuated and a further 15 families affected. Flooding also destroyed 67 hectares of crops in the area.

A few days earlier, heavy rain caused mudslides in the town of Tahuantinsuyo Lobo, Kimbiri District, La Convención Province, Cusco Region on 19 March, 2019. The mudslides affected 115 people and destroyed 31 homes. Three people were injured.

Wide areas of the country were affected by flooding and landslides in early February 2019 and then again in late February.

Ecuador
A state of emergency has been declared for the cantons of Pueblo Viejo, Babahoyo and Vinces in Los Ríos Province, Ecuador, after flooding and heavy rain that began around 23 March, 2019. Around 250 people have been displaced and 13 homes destroyed. In total over 8,000 people have been affected.

Parts of Los Rios province were affected by floods during late February this year.

Bolivia
Disaster management authorities in Bolivia said that, as of 25 March, 2019, over 1,700 families had been affected by the flooding from the Parapetí River in the municipality of Charagua, Cordillera province, Santa Cruz Department. Over 2,000 hectares of crops and 109 homes have been destroyed in the floods.

Earlier this month Civil Defence authorities in Bolivia report that 30 people have died in floods and landslides during the current rainy season in the country and a further 27 were missing.

Many of the fatalities occurred in Caranavi Province, La Paz Department, after landslides and flooding in early February, 2019.

Colombia
On 26 March 2019, the Colombia National Disaster Risk Management Unit (UNGRD), indicated that so far this rainy season as many as 1,514 families have been affected, 5 people have died and 17 people suffered injuries in 15 departments and 65 municipalities due to floods.

The worst affected departments were: Cundinamarca, Cauca, Tolima, Santander, Caldas, Cesar, Nariño, Chocó, Risaralda, Antioquia, Boyacá, Valle del Cauca, Magdalena, Guainía, and Norte de Santander.

March 2019 was another month of significant extreme weather events, with record-breaking flooding, hailstorms, snowfalls and wildfires - on every continent, no matter the season.

While the media hypes the pseudo-scientific claim that climate change is man-made and whose effects should really only concern future generations, HERE AND NOW the climate is shifting - and, besides mitigating some of its effects, there is nothing governments can do to prevent this shift from happening.

Among the 'highlights' in March were catastrophic flooding in the US Midwest after a 'winter hurricane' inundated much of the US with snow and rain. Nebraska was especially hardest hit as two-thirds of the state became an inland sea. Of the multiple powerful cyclones in the southern hemisphere last month, one caused unprecedented flooding in southeastern Africa and killed 1,000 people.

Huge dust-devils, 'snownados', 'thundersnow', and deluges of hail and rain occur with such regularity now, they're practically 'normal'. The same goes for spectacular meteor fireball events, which - after a decade of not seeing them - even the mainstream media reports on these days.

Earthquakes of the 20th Century

"This animation shows every recorded earthquake in sequence as they occurred from January 1, 1901, through December 31, 2000, at a rate of 1 year per second. The earthquake hypocenters first appear as flashes then remain as colored circles before shrinking with time so as not to obscure subsequent earthquakes. The size of the circle represents the earthquake magnitude while the color represents its depth within the earth. At the end of the animation it will first show all quakes in this 100-year period. Next, it will show only those earthquakes greater than magnitude 6.5, the smallest earthquake size known to make a tsunami. It will then show only those earthquakes with magnitudes of 8.0 or larger, the “great” earthquakes most likely to pose a tsunami threat when they occur under the ocean or near a coastline and when they are shallow within the earth (less than 100 km or 60 mi. deep). The animation concludes by showing the plate boundary faults responsible for the majority of all of these earthquakes.

The era of modern earthquake seismology—the scientific study of earthquakes—began in the 20th Century with the invention of the seismometer and its deployment in instrument networks to record and measure earthquakes as they occur. Therefore, when the animation begins only the largest earthquakes appear as they were the only ones that could be detected at great distances with the few available instruments available at the time. But as time progresses, more and more seismometers were deployed and smaller and smaller earthquakes could be recorded. For example, note how in the 1930’s many small earthquakes suddenly seem to appear in California, but this illusion results from the installation of more and more instruments in that region. Likewise, there appears to be a jump in the number of earthquakes globally in the 1970’s when seismology took another leap forward with advances in telecommunications and signal processing with digital computers, a trend that continues today.

20th Century seismology revealed the global geographic distribution of earthquakes and helped to solidify the Theory of Plate Tectonics. Notice how earthquake epicenters do not occur randomly in space but form patterns over the earth’s surface, revealing the boundaries between tectonic plates as shown toward the end of this animation. This time period also includes some remarkable events, including those that generated devastating tsunamis:

These earthquakes represent some of the largest ever recorded. Note how they all occur at a particular type of plate boundary, subduction zones where tectonic plates collide, so these are the regions where we expect future devastating tsunamis to be generated."

The UV levels here are soaring. I wrote elsewhere that I accidentally burned my eyes (twice! ) because I had no idea the UV was spiking so high.

The UV burn (like snowblindness) was severe, and I had to spend 3 days in a darkened room allowing my eyes to heal somewhat.

I took this screenshot of the real-time readout from a local UV measuring station on 14 Feb, just 5 days ago. The level spiked at 18, which is 60% higher than the regularly described 'extreme-so-stay-indoors' level of 11. (18 is crazy-high, and dangerous. 11 is as high as any internet UV charts go.)





It's been between 13—16 regularly the last few weeks, almost every day. It's a serious problem, but at the moment it's only really affecting populations near the equator and also at high altitude (i.e. close to the sun, like yours truly). Peru, much of which is very high as well, is affected similarly. Tourists at Machu Picchu, unless they've been warned, may be doing themselves quite some damage.

So UV, too, is changing. And extreme UV is a kind of silent, invisible thing, unlike heatwaves, snow, or floods, so it's rarely talked about. I hardly paid any attention to it until I fried my eyes last month, and then went to check out what the heck had happened to me.

An interesting snippet here reported by Greg Caton, who I know and lives fairly close to me here in Ecuador, at a similar altitude. The rest of the interview is unrelated, but at 35:15 he briefly reports the UV levels where he is range from 17—24. (He has friends who measure the levels themselves. I've never done that. I don't have a meter, and my data is from the net.)

Interesting waterspout seen despite fair weather at Lake Jesup, Florida

It was a scorcher Tuesday across Central Florida with highs reaching between 87 and 93 degrees, with feels-like temperatures between 5-7 degrees higher than the actual temperature.

Tuesday night will bring mostly clear skies with a low of 71 degrees.

The rip currents are moderate at the beaches. Anyone planning to be outside is advised to drink plenty of water.

Despite the fair weather, there was a bit of a sea breeze, the right humidity and just right conditions over lake Jesup to initiate a funnel cloud, turning into a waterspout. Channel 9 viewer Phil Hancock sent a video of the phenomenon Tuesday afternoon. Chief meteorologist Tom Terry said he couldn't even spot the cloud it descended from, as skies were mostly clear in this area.

1. We're already in the Grand Solar Minimum.
2. That the effects will be devastating.
3. That it'll be worse than even feared so far by good researchers.

Thank you for posting this video. I have been looking all over for quality info about this subject. Look forward to watching it.

I had to move due to fire risk in my former neighbourhood, plus sitting high on a ridge exposed to storms from all directions. We had hurricane force winds on December 22 that would have intrigued me, if not for my house being situated in the middle of older second growth forest. Trees all over the neighbourhood were toppling like ten pins...big ones, as the ground was saturated and root systems shallow. Very very scary.
