According to the INGV there have been more than 120 EQs from 2M to +4M since the 6.1 EQ early this AM (including the area of Perugia which is 140km NW). There appears not to have been any warning beforehand that this would have happened, that is, no swarming before the big one.

Dutchsinse gave a 2 day warning Italy was going to get hit.

What do you do if an accurate forecast is predicted? Evacuate?

Get away from old buildings, what if they are all old?

Tough to do more than put on a helmet and pads to cushion your fall

Good Morning, Avalon. Here's an update from an Italian Civil Protection briefing via RAINEws24 as of this morning 7am:

Search for victims of the EQ continued during the night, especially trying to capture sounds or crys for help from the rubble of collapsed buildings. Three more people were extracted alive and several presences, presumably deceased, have been signaled by the search dogs.

There are 30 Canine Search and Rescue squads present on the territory. 1000 police, 400 military, 880 firemen rescue personnel, 3000 volunteers who operate in rescue operations (Italian Red Cross, Esercito Alpini, radio communications, etc.) and accogliance (Caritas, social servies, medical services, food services, transport, telecommunications et al).

460 persons are recovered in hospital, innumerable injured have been treated and released, 247 is the official number of deceased so far. Unfortunately, many of the people rescued have died afterwards. 100s are still missing. Numerous dogs have been rescued from the rubble, too.

The search continues... as well as the quakes: there have been over 460 registered since the first. The strongest EQ in the last few hours was a 4.5M around 5am this morning. Additional buildings have fallen or damaged structures have deteriorated further because of the continuing tremors.

Italy earthquake: Death toll passes 240 as rescue efforts continue

The death toll in the Italian earthquake stands at 241 as rescuers continue efforts
to find survivors. Dozens of people are believed trapped in ruined Amatrice,
Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto, in mountainous central Italy.

There have been hundreds of aftershocks since the quake struck, hampering relief
efforts and damaging already unstable buildings.More than 4,300 rescuers are
using heavy machinery and their bare hands.Rescuers have advised journalists and
bystanders to leave Amatrice urgently, as "the town is crumbling", the BBC's Jenny
Hill says.Another powerful aftershock struck the town on Thursday afternoon,
sending a huge dust cloud into the air.

Situation Update via RAINews24 Civil Protection announcement as of 6pm this evening:

245 persons have been extracted alive.
    250 persons deceased confirmed.
    365 injured and hospitalized.

32 persons were registered patrons at the Roma Hotel which has finally been reached and is being searched. 20 persons were able to escape the collapse, 6 have been found dead in the rubble, 6 are still missing.

It is still unsure how many people were originally in the area at the time of the quake being that these towns' population generally increases 100% during the summer months with vacationers. There are still about 100 persons registered as unaccounted for.

During the quake this afternoon at 2:44pm many damaged buildings contined to deconstruct, ufortunately adding more rubble to yet unchesked areas.

    Good afternoon, Avalon.

    Another update:

Another quake this mornng at 4:26 am, 4.8 Mag struck causing the partial collapse of a damaged bridge along the main road into Amatrice. Now the entrance and exit is limited being that there is a secondary via extra-urban through rough and uncultured terrain but it is very long and winding through hills and gullies making the going difficult for the rescue vehicles. Military Engineers are working on temporarily securing what remains of the bridge. Maybe it will be operable in the next few days. This unwanted inconvienience has also isolated the hundreds of persons in the temporary tent-housing camp and as well as the volunteers and rescuers who were staying there, too.

The Civil Defence is asking to halt all speditions of donations of food and clothing as they now have more than they actually need. Instead they are asking for bedding, blankets, jackets and sleeping bags.

New totals: 268 deceased, 238 extracted alive, (the first two numbers vary from report to report because some of the victims extracted alive have since then died), 387 injured and hospitalized, 15 known missing.

According to geologists and Satelite, the land mass at Accumoli, RI, one of the towns devastated by the EQ is now lower by 20cm.

The quake in Aquila in 2009, land mass had sunk an average of 50cm.

At last, as much has been gossiped about on the news but nothing had been confirmed, the data on non-italian citizens is finally coming out:

3 UK citizens lost their lives in the EQ.

Quote Italy earthquake: Boy, 14, among three UK deaths

    From the section UK

A 14-year-old boy from London was among three Britons killed in Wednesday's earthquake in central Italy.

Marcos Burnett was on holiday with his parents and sister when the quake hit.

Will Henniker-Gotley, 55, and his wife Maria, 51, from Stockwell in London, also died.

It is understood both families were staying in the same property in the town of Amatrice, where emergency teams are continuing to search for survivors. At least 268 people lost their lives.

Marcos Burnett's parents suffered from minor injuries and are being treated in hospital in Italy.

A statement from the Foreign Office said: "It is with sadness that we can confirm the deaths of Maria, 51, and Will, 55, Henniker-Gotley and Marcos Burnett, 14, in the earthquake in Amatrice, Italy on 24 August.

"The families have paid tribute to the tireless work of the Italian rescue workers and hospital staff and expressed their gratitude for the love and support they have received from the Italian people."

A handful of other nationalities have been mentioned, but I'll not report it here as there is no official confirmation yet....

Just to top off this thread, since I kind of left things dangling, here are the latest, and maybe final, numbers for this sad human drama:

From the 24th of August EQ, there have been over 3900 tremors recorded. Most of the once recorded in the past 48 hours have not been greater than 3 mag Richter.

A total of 293 have died. More bodies may still be located in the rubble as clean-up proceeds.

    Six persons are still missing.

Over 2900 are presently living in the 3 tent towns provided by the Red Cross-Italian military et al. Much discussion is going on about what to do for the now homeless people, as autumn is upon us and temperatures are cooling, and soon these people will need a better choice of long-term temporary dwellings.

Although the news channels are still primarily focused on this sad disaster and all of the "what now?" and "who's fault is it" discussion, it has already pretty much passed into the "to forget" archives for most folks not directly involved.... tipically... and sadly so.

Unless something new evolves... I guess that's about it.
