Elon has made two Earth-changing contributions to the human race, in the form of [1] Paypal and [2] Tesla motors. These companies form the backbone of a new financial system, and clean energy grid.

I disagree.
[1] Paypal isn't a "new" financial system - just a means to transfer funny munny via the internet... for a hefty fee.
[2] Tesla motors is never going to be a viable solution to the problem of "clean" transportation.

You might have a point. I'm fully aware of what Paypal and Tesla detractors say. I'm watching Elon's presentation now, and skeptical about some of his answers, especially when he says he might transport nuclear energy to Mars "if the public was receptive." That gives me pause for thought.

I still think it's better to diplomatically engage with people to see what they're made of. If, after a few months, they don't come up with clear answers, then maybe they had nothing to begin with.

Regarding Tesla and Paypal. Those are systems that are currently in operation. Could you name a working alternative to Paypal or Tesla motors, something that's in production now, that solves energy and money transfer problems? If you criticize, you're obliged to come up with a alternative, or you're an armchair critic with no solutions.

EDIT: I saw what you wrote about trains. I 100% agree that trains are the best form of transport, but we still need to solve the problem of road travel.

Paypal is far from perfect, but it's the first step to a new set of financial platforms that will eventually decentralize finance. It's helping 220 million people make a living in a 66 billion dollar economy as we speak. Do not mistake positivity for naiviety.

I saw what you wrote about trains. I 100% agree that trains are the best form of transport, but we still need to solve the problem of road travel.

The myriad problems associated with road travel are reduced or eliminated once 80% to 90% of land transport is by rail. Coincidentally, in the 1920s, 90% of all travel was by rail.

What happened through the 20s/30s was that General Motors bought a lot of the rail systems by using shell companies...and stopped maintenance so everything fell apart and people needed cars.

In a recent renovation of a downtown area near where I live, they kept digging up old trolley lines, accidentally, because no one knew they were there any more, like some kind of lost civilization.

Thanks Star, this was a surprising announcement. I imagine the idea of sending private citizens to the moon is somewhere making someone or other a bit nervous.

I also imagine that should this enterprise end in catastrophe, the rocket exploding on the pad, or otherwise these 'celeb-nauts' or whoever they are just not returning to earth in one piece, will send the...ahem...conspiracy theory forums into meltdown!

People will soon be able to fly from city to city within minutes, rocket and car
entrepreneur Elon Musk says.Mr Musk made the promise at the International

A promotional video says the London-New York journey would take 29 minutes.
Mr Musk told the audience he aimed to start sending people to Mars in 2024. His
SpaceX company would begin building the necessary ships to support the mission
next year. He says he is refocusing SpaceX to work on just one type of vehicle -
known as the BFR - which could do all of the firm's current work and interplanetary
travel. Mr Musk first laid out his Mars travel ambitions at the IAC in 2016. Twelve
months on, he returned with more detail. His BFR, although still massive, is now a
little smaller at 106m in height and 9m in width. The major difference compared
with the original version, however, was cost, the South African-born American said.

"I think we've figured out how to pay for it. This is very important."

These envisioned space vehicles of what will be the 2020's, are almost identical to what space vehicles looked like and how they operated in the 1950s.

Still using "rocketry"? Doesn't this mean that humanity has gotten terribly stuck in a technological dead-end? It hasn't though, has it. Every single (other) facet, element and nuance of technology has advanced hugely in 70 years... except for space propulsion.

But we here know that this isn't true at all. AT ALL. Deep under the surface of these glossy press releases is another world, a dark world, hidden from all of us, a place where rockets (or, ballistic missiles from the 40s and 50s with fins strapped on them a la Fireball XL-5), belong mostly to a technological stone age.

What's more, I still have my collection of space-related books for children that I grew up with. In them are pictures just like above (paintings rather than cgi of course), along with grandiose descriptions of what the future was going to be like. I eagerly gobbled up this futurist literature as a kid, I lived for the stuff! We'd have moon bases by 1980, be on mars by 1990, and by the year 2000, who knows! I couldn't wait.

But they did get one thing right though. In the future, according to the futurists of the past, we'd still be using rockets! nothing more, and nothing better than rockets.

Something does not feel right about this somehow , NASA/Russia are carrying on
as normal setting up possible Mars missions sometime in the future, and SpaceX
planning going to Mars in under a decade. China and India are also entering the game.

This is without the elephant in the room ,secret space programme , existing
moon/mars bases and ET's etc....
