Default SEED: The Untold Story (Official Theatrical Trailer)

Few things on Earth are as miraculous and vital as seeds. Worshipped and treasured since the dawn of humankind. SEED: The Untold Story follows passionate seed keepers protecting our 12,000 year-old food legacy. In the last century, 94% of our seed varieties have disappeared. As biotech chemical companies control the majority of our seeds, farmers, scientists, lawyers, and indigenous seed keepers fight a David and Goliath battle to defend the future of our food. In a harrowing and heartening story, these reluctant heroes rekindle a lost connection to our most treasured resource and revive a culture connected to seeds. SEED features Vandana Shiva, Dr. Jane Goodall, Andrew Kimbrell, Winona Laduke and Raj Patel.

    Thanks for posting sunwings.

Here’s an interview with Vandana Shiva that may have a place here.

About Vandana Shiva, from her website : http://vandanashiva.com/?page_id=2

Dr. Vandana Shiva trained as a Physicist at the University of Punjab, and completed her Ph.D. on the ‘Hidden Variables and Non-locality in Quantum Theory’ from the University of Western Ontario, Canada. She later shifted to inter-disciplinary research in science, technology and environmental policy, which she carried out at the Indian Institute of Science and the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, India. In 1982, she founded an independent institute – the Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology in Dehra Dun – dedicated to high quality and independent research to address the most significant ecological and social issues of our times, working in close partnership with local communities and social movements. In 1991 she founded Navdanya, a national movement to protect the diversity and integrity of living resources – especially native seed – and to promote organic farming and fair trade...

Some points Vandana raises in the interview :

    - The spread of corporate farming in India, coupled with a limit on the size of farms individuals can own
    - Corporations patenting seeds for profit
    - Increased suicides of farmers in India since corporations took over seed supply
    - Farmers trapped in debt due to cost of seeds and chemicals
    - Seed property rights introduced from World Trade Organisation
    - Claims that farmers wish for or value Monsanto’s brand of development are false
    - Monsanto falsely claims their system creates higher farming yields
    - Monoculture of farming results in appearance of higher yields in specific crops (e.g. cotton, corn), but also results in less biodiversity in farming
    - Since she started Navdanya, their method of farming has produced 2-3 times more food per acre, with 2-3 times more nutrition per acre
(Wikipedia : “Navdanya is an Indian-based non-governmental organisation which promotes biodiversity conservation, biodiversity, organic farming, the rights of farmers, and the process of seed saving”)
    - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Olivier De Schutter, reported there can be a threefold increase in food production through ecological methods
    - International Assessment of Agricultural Science, Technology for Development has said ecological farming is the way forward
    - With the loss of independent farming there is less production of older and varied grains like millet, and pulses (pulses being a source of protein for vegetarians)
    - India is the home of eggplant / aubergine diversity, but Monsanto is trying to push their genetically modified eggplant
    - Laws that treat seed-saving and / or biodiversity as a crime are worth disobeying
    - It is not too late to defend biodiversity

At 23 minutes 11 seconds in, the interviewer asks :
Isn’t it too late for India now?

    Vandana replies :
Not at all. I think we are way ahead in the defence of the freedom of seed, in the defence of biodiversity, and in the defence of freedom of farmers and people to have access to life in its abundance and richness.

We don’t have GM foods in India, because for 10 years we’ve been keeping them out. We only have GM cotton, only cotton, and it is failing – and I can tell you, in five years time there will no Bt cotton in India.

Let’s look forward to abundance, diversity, and the protection of a healthy, life-giving heritage.
