Excerpt from ZeroHedge article, WikiLeaks Holds Press Conference On CIA Hacking, Will Share Hacking Tools With Tech Firms -

Quote One of the notable disclosures is that Assange will share details on the CIA's hacking tools with the tech industry before releasing them to the general public. The WikiLeaks founder said he has much more detailed information about CIA hacking techniques and will allow tech companies access so they can "develop fixes" before the information is more widely published.

Wikileaks has claimed claims the CIA Center for Cyber Intelligence "lost control of the majority of its hacking arsenal," more than several hundred million lines of code that provide "the entire hacking capacity of the CIA." It has alleged that the archive appears to have been circulated among former government hackers and contractors, one of whom provided WikiLeaks with portions of it. The website says the CIA hacking division involved "more than 5,000 registered users and had produced more than a thousand hacking systems, trojans, viruses, and other 'weaponized' malware."

Assange mentions the issue of hacking tools being used for personal reasons, this 2013 article discusses that issue -

NSA staff used spy tools on spouses, ex-lovers: watchdog

    By Alina Selyukh | WASHINGTON
At least a dozen U.S. National Security Agency employees have been caught using secret government surveillance tools to spy on the emails or phone calls of their current or former spouses and lovers in the past decade, according to the intelligence agency's internal watchdog.

The practice is known in intelligence world shorthand as "LOVEINT" and was disclosed by the NSA Office of the Inspector General in response to a request by the Senate Judiciary Committee's top Republican Charles Grassley for a report on abuses of the NSA's surveillance authority.

In one instance in 2005, a military member of the NSA queried six email addresses of a former American girlfriend - on the first day he obtained access to the data collection system. He later testified that "he wanted to practice on the system" and gained no information as a result of his queries.

In another instance, a foreign woman who was employed by the U.S. government suspected that her lover, an NSA civilian employee, was listening to her phone calls. She shared her suspicion with another government employee, who reported it.

An investigation found the man abused NSA databases from 1998 to 2003 to snoop on nine phone numbers of foreign women and twice collected communications of an American, according to the inspector general's report.

The NSA's spying operations have come under intense scrutiny since disclosures this spring by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden that the U.S. government collects far more Internet and telephone data than previously publicly known.

Many members of Congress and administration officials staunchly defend the NSA surveillance programs as a critical defense tool against terrorist attacks, but privacy advocates say the spying agency's authority has grown to be too sweeping.

Jameel Jaffer, deputy legal director at the American Civil Liberties Union, said the reported incidents of NSA employees' violations of the law are likely "the tip of the iceberg" of lax data safeguards, but that the laws guiding the NSA's spying authority in the first place are a bigger issue.

"If you only focus on instances in which the NSA violated those laws, you're missing the forest for the trees," he said. "The bigger concern is not with willful violations of the law but rather with what the law itself allows."

Most of the abuses detailed in the NSA inspector general's September 11 letter to Grassley were discovered through the agency's own audits, or self-reports and polygraph interviews with the employees. Their names were not disclosed.

According to the report, a female civilian NSA employee snooped on her husband's phone conversations after looking up a foreign number she found on his phone because she suspected him of cheating.

Yet another civilian employee, caught abusing the system by looking up the phone numbers of various foreigners she met socially, said she wanted to ensure she was not talking to "shady characters."

In at least six of the 12 instances reported by the inspector general since January 1, 2003, the matters were referred to the Department of Justice.

In several instances, the violators resigned or retired from their jobs before being disciplined. Others were demoted, given extra days of duty, had their pay cut, and had their access to databases revoked, the report said.

This whole idea that the CIA or any government or agency is doing something wrong is ridiculous, from their perspective.

    1. Those in power create the rules. Any Gov or agency that has superior power will never willingly give it up. Any legal battle against them would only be from those with lesser power who would simply be ignored or deceived.

    2. There's no way to stop intrusive surveliiance via technology. And even if there was how you know? You wouldn't. So if you play with "their toys" and use "their rules" then you will lose.

We all seem to have a part to play with whatever it is we are doing - and then there is what appears to be the greater trend of awakening of the collective human consciousness, which I would suspect is indeed beyond "their control."

I just listened to this little interview that on the face of it seems harmless
enough the usual about Brexit and Trump. Then Nigel gets asked whether
he had a meeting with Julian Assange ? Nigal gets coy and you need to
see his facial expressions as he says he keeps all his meetings private twice.

Now why would Nigel meet Julian ? they have never been connected
publically before as far as I know ? But a bit of 'conspiracy' going on
here what if Nigel was acting as a proxy for someone in the Trump
campaign or Trump himself as they dinned together recently...UHM !!
The timing is spot on and Nigel's reaction in vid does not seem his usual
    self ? interresting......

John McAfee On The Russian Hacking Says It's NOT Russia!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dvj0v0W6yjk

    Published on 30 Dec 2016

Following the release of an FBI report outlining Russia’s alleged role in hacking the
2016 election, Larry King sat down to talk with tech pioneer John McAfee to discuss
    the current state of cybersecurity.

McAfee is no stranger to cybersecurity. As the developer of the first commercial
antivirus program, he has been a major player in the industry for the past 50
years. He is also the CEO of MGT Capital Investments, and an outspoken former
presidential candidate for the Libertarian Party.

Based on all of his experience, McAfee does not believe that Russians were behind
the hacks on the Democratic National Committee (DNC), John Podesta’s emails,
and the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. As he told RT, “if it looks like the
Russians did it, then I can guarantee you it was not the Russians.”

The Joint Analysis Report from the FBI contains an appendix that lists hundreds of
IP addresses that were supposedly “used by Russian civilian and military
intelligence services.” While some of those IP addresses are from Russia, the
majority are from all over the world, which means that the hackers constantly
    faked their location.

Google and Microsoft apparently a bit antsy.

Google, Microsoft Still Waiting On Wikileaks To Deliver CIA Hacking Tools

Quote It's been two days since Julian Assange promised Wikileaks would hand over more information on Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) hacker tools to tech giants. That pledge followed a leak of nearly 9,000 documents that Wikileaks claimed belonged to CIA hacking units.

But while that altruistic move should help protect every one of their users from cyberattack, neither Google nor Microsoft had received details from Wikileaks on vulnerabilities in their software by Saturday morning, according to sources familiar with the companies' security teams.

Google did not offer official comment, but two sources close to the company's security staff said there had been no contact. One said there was now concern Wikileaks had duped the public with a PR move of little to no substance, though on Thursday one external Android security expert who'd reviewed the CIA files said it appeared there were multiple vulnerabilities Google would need to address.

"We've seen Julian Assange's statement and have not yet been contacted," a Microsoft spokesperson said in an emailed statement Friday, originally sent to press on Thursday, the same day Assange claimed Wikileaks would help provide "antidotes" for CIA exploits before publishing them. As of Saturday, Microsoft had not provided any further update, after Forbes' enquiries. Wikileaks had not returned requests for comment.

The Microsoft spokesperson added: "Our preferred method for anyone with knowledge of security issues, including the CIA or Wikileaks, is to submit details to us at secure@microsoft.com so we can review information and take any necessary steps to protect customers."

While the Wikileaks Vault 7 leak also affected Apple products, from iPhones to Macs, the Cupertino firm had not provided any comment at the time of publication. Samsung, whose smart TVs were targeted by CIA hackers as part of a joint research project with Britain's MI5 spy agency, also hadn't responded to enquiries.

Apple, Google and Microsoft said many of the leaked CIA tools targeted older systems and that most were likely dealt with in past software updates. Despite such assurances, the tech giants were not confident enough to provide specifics or confirm all issues were patched.

    Wikileaks 'should publish malware'

And while there were few examples of actually usable code in the CIA Vault 7 leak, some Windows malware was uncovered by security expert Marc Maiffret, indicating Wikileaks may have mistakenly left it unredacted. Maiffret, former chief technology officer at security firm BeyondTrust and a cybersecurity entrepreneur, posted an analysis of the Windows implant yesterday. He noted that publishing spyware was nothing like publishing vulnerabilities, as cybercriminals and other kinds of malicious hackers already have access to such tools.

He urged Wikileaks to publish all malware code, however, and should "help defenders and work with technology companies affected by the vulnerabilities and exploits to produce patches for customers."

"It is of course very time consuming and not always easy to analyze all of this technical data to figure out what parts are malware and implants vs. vulnerabilities and exploits. This is why they seemingly redacted all of that type of data in general except for this mistake here that I wrote about."

Either Wikileaks is still triaging the data so it can hand useful information to the likes of Google and Microsoft or it just played the media and the public. If it's the former, the security world wouldn't mind some haste.
