Default Words to live by - a 12 year old's answer to a recent school project

So my daughter had a project at school - she was asked to write up her own "rules to live by." This is what she came up with:

    1) When you are about to do something exhilarating and you get the feeling not to do it, "JUST DO IT!"

    2) If you play a competitive sport try not to judge yourself or others.

    3) Don't be a show off and don't put yourself down.

    4) Give everyone a chance to say their part.

    5) Try to ignore bullies they might do stuff for your reaction.

    6) When you see something you like get involved.

    7) Be nice to people.

    8) Do not dwell on negative stuff.

    9) Encourage other people to do good things.

    10) Work for what you love.

--> Don't put yourself down if you have trouble following these rules - everyone has challenges!

But at the end of the day, I bet you can do it.

This was a totally open ended assignment. I have to say I was heartened by what she came up with!

Wow! Congratulation! Thanks for letting us know.

That's what we discussed yesterday while watching some youngsters in a restaurant: The 1960/70s generation (I mean the people, not the artificially enforced "movement") made the difference, they changed the pattern (of authority) that was passed down from generation to generation since centuries, although they fell in every trap on their way and there were a lot of errors, and the large portion of them were not able to brake the rule in their personal lives. The kids of the 80s/90s did already much better, but still struggled heavily with their heritage and their parents' unresolved issues - until the millenials left those remains behind completely. Now the very young ones, they just make me stand in awe, whenever I watch them 🌞

Change has always been implemented from above (from the top of the hierarchies), but this time it's different. In my cultural area there have been continuous attempts to break out - e.g. around 1800 (early Romanticism) or around 1900 ("life reform" movement - and it always ended up in a repressive, authoritarian regime and led to the next war(s).

This time it's different. As difficult and contradictory as it appears, this time there's no way back into the trap. I just hope I'm not falling into the trap of romaticizing.

That's what I was thinking when I read it! That's why I decided to post it, because it gave me hope for the future, and I wanted to share that hope winery one on th forum. My daughter never ceases to amaze me, and I do believe that despite the wild swings of the pendulum, we have a lot of really amazing and awakened souls joining the ranks lately.

That is very sweet of you to say, but really my job is to just help her be who she is with taking on too much of the worlds negativity, or my own for that matter. She really is her own special person, she came into the world like this. I consider myself blessed to be her mother and her guide for this part of her journey

At this late date in my own life, I can safely say that the majority of the time we ARE what our parents have raised us to be!! Good going, Freedom!
