Exclamation Elon Musk leads 116 experts calling for outright ban on killer robots

I, for one, welcome this, and similar, iniatives. Also, add cyborg machines to the list.

Open letter signed by Tesla chief and Google’s Mustafa Suleyman urges UN to block use of lethal autonomous weapons to prevent third age of war

Some of the world’s leading robotics and artificial intelligence pioneers are calling on the United Nations to ban the development and use of killer robots.

Tesla’s Elon Musk and Google’s Mustafa Suleyman are leading a group of 116 specialists from across 26 countries who are calling for the ban on autonomous weapons.

The UN recently voted to begin formal discussions on such weapons which include drones, tanks and automated machine guns. Ahead of this, the group of founders of AI and robotics companies have sent an open letter to the UN calling for it to prevent the arms race that is currently under way for killer robots.

In their letter, the founders warn the review conference of the convention on conventional weapons that this arms race threatens to usher in the “third revolution in warfare” after gunpowder and nuclear arms.

The founders wrote: “Once developed, lethal autonomous weapons will permit armed conflict to be fought at a scale greater than ever, and at timescales faster than humans can comprehend. These can be weapons of terror, weapons that despots and terrorists use against innocent populations, and weapons hacked to behave in undesirable ways.

“We do not have long to act. Once this Pandora’s box is opened, it will be hard to close.”

In this clip the A.I. killingmachine has a human appearance, but in reality the autonomous killers, which are being developed right now, will look unconventional -form follows function- adapted to give the best tactical advantage killing humans.

Ha!!! "look from the right side comes the killers".. while the real killers on the left side are doing their thing. Is it obvious that one nuclear tip missile can wreck havoc more than a hundred times than a killer robot? But then everyone should be banned from making nuclear missiles, including north Korea, except the world police. I see nothing different. look to the opposite side and you'll see the real deal.
I will call for ban on all killing devices including gun. well without guns the killer robots cant shoot.

Killing machines driven by A.I. would make 'conventional' warfare merciless on groundtroup humans. I have seen vids of a planned anti-tank scenario where robots are dropped on a field to be left dormant, and camoflauged, until tanks arrive, then they activate and shoot projectiles at the tanks taking them out easily. I think this method of automated warfare might increase the likelihood of conflict, as demonstrated by the increasing use of drones all over the developing world.

This call to ban the development and use of these type of weapons is not a red herring. Any reduction in weapons development is a wise thing. An example of a similar quasi-ban occurred in the 1980's when the deployment of the neutron bomb was greatly curtailed, according to the msm anyway. There has also been a quasi-successful global ban on landmines.

If there is a time to take a stand against the militarization of artificial intelligence and killer robots, now is a good time to do it.

Amongst other things, i would support the suppression of A.I. development, the use of robotics in the workplace, cyborg development and genetic engineering. When the ethics and regulatory control mechanisms are in place, then perhaps some development can proceed. But we are a long way from that now. This position is supported by some very intelligent, well informed people, like Musk and Hawking.
