We've been working with FEMA and Dept of Agriculture (local, not federal) and today are helping to distribute 41 pallets of dog food to the various organizations that help with dogs/cats around the island.

We have also secured 15 pallets of horse feed (partly via donations from places like Project Avalon, thank you!) which is at least 3 months of feed which won't have to be worried about. On top of our daily feeding routine we've added in an every-other-day sun screen application session; there is very little shade and the horses (especially those with white markings) are getting sun-burnt (some of them look pretty funny). I never thought about that before the storm but luckily we already had the needed supplies.

We had flash flooding the past two days which completely stopped the electrical workers and debris clearing crews, our curfew has been adjusted to 7pm to 9am due to road hazards (it's pretty bad, there's large electric wires hanging everywhere, you can easily avoid them during the day but at night it's pretty hard.. there's been a few bad accidents).

Domestic abuse cases are up as people don't have many opportunities for stress relief and are stuck at houses with no power; there are radio adds telling people how to deal with stress (not sure if that helps or not).

On the bright side the "sticks" that our trees and "bush" turned into are now turning green.. it looks a bit strange but at least it doesn't look like an apocalyptic wasteland. I'll probably work on a video or something to show a bit of the past few weeks but I'm not super motivated right now.. I've only had 3 days off since the 3rd of last month... I need a vacation from this (these?) disaster... haha
They say no one needs a vacation more than the guy that just got off of one LOL.

Sounds like your spirits are up TargeT and that's great news!

Take care brother and be safe!

We should probably add Ophelia to the thread's title. Patrick Riddie of Stop Spraying Us sees electromagnetic or acoustic ripples and aerosol spraying in and around this now category 3 hurricane.

Riddie uses NASA satellite imagery in his 13-minute Ophelia video, published today.

Good to hear from you TargeT and that you are plugging along.....not good to hear how slow the progress is in bringing some semblance back to life for you and others. Is there power on the other side of the Island? If so, can you take a few days and have a mini vacation on the side that didn't get the vicious whack you guys got?

Hurricane Ophelia threatens Ireland & UK with 90mph winds & flooding (VIDEOS)

A particularly violent hurricane season is finally coming to a close in the Atlantic, but not before yielding yet another surprise, as Ophelia is set to batter Ireland and the UK over the next two days.

Hurricane Ophelia formed in a persistent low-pressure system in the middle of the ocean, as opposed to developing in the tropics like the rest of this year's hurricanes, and will lash northwestern Europe with winds of up to 90mph (144kph). Power outages, felled trees, and flooding are expected across Ireland and the United Kingdom.

“Flying debris is likely, such as tiles blown from roofs, as well as large waves around coastal districts with beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties. This leads to the potential for injuries and danger to life,” according to the British meteorological office.
“We’ve had a very active hurricane season, but the remains of Hurricanes Maria and José passed us by harmlessly, as is usually the case,” a spokesperson for Ireland’s official weather service, Met Eireann, said, according to the Independent.
“But Ophelia is unusual because hurricanes would usually come from America or the Caribbean, whereas this one is coming from the southwest, below the Azores,” they added. “It’s worth noting that Hurricane Debbie also came from this unusual direction and source region.”
The Atlantic is typically too cold for hurricanes to develop, let alone survive long enough to make landfall in western Europe. It will also be the Atlantic’s tenth consecutive hurricane in 2017, Popular Science reports.

For context, there haven’t been this many Atlantic hurricanes since the 19th century.

While not unprecedented (Hurricane Vince was the first recorded tropical hurricane to make landfall on the Iberian Peninsula in 2005), Ophelia formed where hurricanes usually disappear; in the North Atlantic. These types of storms usually require warm water to survive, and once water temperatures drop, they dissipate.

By the time Ophelia makes landfall in western Europe, it will have lost the majority of its tropical characteristics. This can, however, create an even more expansive area of effect, with winds stretching out further than they would if the storm didn’t reach the ‘post-tropical’ phase.

"Given the lead time and the inherent uncertainties that come with the modelling of a tropical system it won’t be possible to quantify the exact timing, nor the strength or intensity of the wind and rain," Ireland’s Met Éireann wrote in a statement. Met Éireann has issued a red weather alert, its highest level warning, across the west of Ireland.

The temperature in the upper atmosphere is bitterly cold, creating convection currents in the air stream between the upper and lower atmosphere which has allowed Ophelia to survive for so long, while also creating intense thunderstorms in the hurricane’s eye.

We have been targetted so many times now, Desmond et al, there was a time when we literally had only 3 hours to evacuate, before the next hit arrived. Why is the infrastructure of North West Cumbria being consistently targetted.
Possibly due to corporate interests in that precious region, the ‘Energy Coast’, did we agree to this marketing fiasco? Nuclear waste being objected to, and deliberately poisoning the local folk with vile borehole waste so they will suffer terrible repercussions for many years to come.Corporate greed, let’s un-cover the reasons why local folk are ignored...
Absolute corporate greed is the answer, never mind the local folk who are disposable, this all looks like an inhumane agenda 😱

Hurricanes have dealt Ireland a few horrid blows over the years, none so awesome as what happened in 1839:

Quote At approximately 3 o’clock in the afternoon, the rain began to fall and the wind picked up. Nobody could possibly have predicted that those first soft raindrops signified an advance assault from the most terrifying hurricane in human memory. By 6 o’clock, the winds had become strong and the raindrops were heavier, sleet-like, with occasional bursts of hail. Farmers grimaced as their hay-ricks and thatched roofs took a pounding. In the towns and villages, fires flickered and doors slammed. Church bells chimed and dogs began to whine. Fishermen turned their ears west; a distant, increasingly loud rumble could be heard upon the frothy horizon. (quoted from the article linked below describing what ensued)

Unbelievable force, 2 heavy upside down metal wheelbarrows in ‘sheltered’ place under wall flipped and loose, a large heavy cement mixer upended, and more scarily scaffold platforms laid flat in a ‘safe’ place thrown about like paper, and they are really heavy. My builder just came over my garden wall (he lives behind), and they secured their kit as far as we can, wind changing direction now. How can wind throw a huge cement mixer over in a sheltered spot? Got torches and candles out just in case, this is the worst storm since desmond windiness. Why don’t neighbours upside their kids’ trampolines? Thanks for all your well wishes, not a patch on Target or Lady M, but totally wrong. This morning sky was dark red with no wind and very hot for hours, almost dark. Sand-strewn atmosphere?

Impending doom? ‘Eerie’ red sun linked to #StormOphelia freaks out Twitter

Some unusual solar activity has got social media spooked. The sun over England appeared red and slightly menacing on Monday, triggering fears of an imminent apocalypse. Many took to Twitter to share their thoughts on the “eerie” spectacle.

The unusual occurrence was seen throughout the country and is thought to have been caused by Storm Ophelia. The red sun was accompanied by ominous-looking, yellow-grey clouds.

According to the Met Office, the red sun was caused by winds pulling up Saharan dust. This dust is then reflected and refracted in longer wavelengths, giving it a red appearance in the sky.

Some areas have been forced to turn on street lights in the middle of the day as the dust partially blocked out the sun.

Using the hashtags #redsun and #apocalyptic, unnerved Brits have shared their photos and videos on social media.

Twitter user Firetrapdiva wrote: “Today has a weird feel about it. The air is strange, the sky is weird and the sun is red. Someone just said it’s the sign of impending doom!”

Another user said: “Today is the day we die, the apocalypse is coming. Lock your doors and remember to remove the head or destroy the brain.”

User Louise Gray said: “Odd old sky out there today and eerily calm… It’s like something out of an apocalypse film.”

Forecasters have issued a “danger to life” warning as Storm Ophelia, one of the biggest storms in years, makes landfall in the UK and Ireland.

A woman has died in the Republic of Ireland after a tree fell on her car amid high winds, while another man was killed as he attempted to clear a tree using a chainsaw.

Hundreds of flights have also been grounded, with winds of up to 80mph predicted.
Ireland is bracing itself for the worst of the storm. Its weather service has issued a red warning saying “violent and destructive” wind is forecast nationwide.

    =========================================

I , too, saw that red orange sun at mid day today... strange indeed.

There's been warm air coming from the south, entrained by Ophelia anticlockwise spin running up the Atlantic... hence the "Red Sun": Sahara's dust and sand, yes, but mostly smoke from Spain and Portugal wildfires... paralleling California wildfires and Disneyland orange skies and red sun...

Ophelia's track was quite a distance from north Africa and the Sahara. Yes, be safe, Avid and others in the region!

You would have to have looked at the winds patterns around it while Ophelia was climbing up North. Like with Ventusky or Global Winds.

    like so, from here (<---):
Dust haze from the Sahara -- La Calima -- is still enveloping the islands:

    ... or from here (<---):
And the approaching dust storm from the Sahara which has reached El Hierro by now, hence the "fog" (Calima) on the webcams:

BBC is reporting that planes were forced to land in the UK due to the smell of smoke in the atmosphere. One passenger said it smelled like fireworks. Caused by Sahara dust drawn in by Ophelia and Portugal fires?

I guess the following connection (which is included in that BBC article) escaped most:

Foxie, thanks for your concerns, it eventually blew out at 2.00pm today.
Apart from rampant building equipment, seems to be okay, yet to check roof but new front door man just left.

Thanks for posting that. I can confirm the veracity of this phenomenon, but had thought it highly localized. Apparently not. It was actually one of the weirdest things I've ever seen - meteorologically speaking. My elderly mother called and said 'look at the Sun!' She couldn't believe it, and was very alarmed. It was absolutely blood-red, like a gigantic luminous Mars, and the sky was yellow, I mean really, really sickly yellow.

This is what the cast was really like (in the middle of the afternoon!).

Very strange. Glad to see the back of that storm and to hear all are ok.
