Venus is the second planet from the Sun. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. As the second-brightest natural object in the night sky after the Moon, Venus can cast shadows and can be, on rare occasion, visible to the naked eye in broad daylight. Venus lies within Earth's orbit, and so never appears to venture far from the Sun, either set in the west just after dusk or rising in the east a bit before dawn. Venus orbits the Sun every 224.7 Earth day

Scientists have long known that Venus remained active long after fellow rocky planets Mercury and Mars lost their geological mojo. The second rock from the sun sports far fewer craters than those two worlds, a count that's consistent with a global resurfacing event some 500 million to 700 million years ago.

The researchers, led by geophysicist Anna Gülcher of ETH Zürich in Switzerland, used computer simulations to model in unprecedented detail the formation and evolution of Venus' ring-shaped volcanic structures, which are called coronae.

Animation: Earth’s Magnetic Field Changes Over Time

Earth is surrounded by a constantly changing magnetic field that shields our habitat against harmful radiation from cosmic rays and the solar wind. A new study in AGU’s journal Reviews of Geophysics summarizes what scientists currently know about how Earth’s magnetic field has evolved over the past 100,000 years.

This animation shows how the intensity of Earth’s magnetic field changed from 44,000 to 38,000 years ago. Around 41,000 years ago, a geomagnetic excursion happened, when the global geomagnetic field intensity reduced dramatically. This event, known as the Laschamp excursion, is the best-documented geomagnetic excursion; evidence of it has been found in geological records around the world. You can see the intensity of the field change from pink (strong) to white (weak) as time progresses.

Comet NEOWISE Is Approaching Earth

Tomorrow night may be your best chance to see Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) for the next 6,800 years. On July 23rd, the comet makes its closest approach to Earth--only 0.63 AU (103 million km) away. It's still visible to the naked eye (barely) from dark sky sites, but will fade as it recedes after this week.

If you can't see the comet after the sky fades to black on Thursday, try using binoculars. Even a little magnification brings NEOWISE into view. Short exposures with digital cameras reveal the comet's magnificent double tail.

Comet NEOWISE is now in the constellation Ursa Major. To find it, look north-northwest after sunset and let the stars of the Big Dipper be your guide.
And if you miss the comet ... no worries. It'll be back in 6,800 years!

This beautiful meteor overflew the south of Spain on 2020 July 22 at about 3:49 local time (equivalent to 1:49 universal time). It was generated by a rock (a meteoroid) from a comet that hit the atmosphere at around 220,000 km/h. It began at an altitude of about 120 km over the Gulf of Cadiz (Atlantic Ocean), and ended at a height of around 75 km over the sea level.

The event was recorded in the framework of the SMART project, which is being conducted by the Southwestern Europe Meteor Network (SWEMN). The event was spotted from the meteor-observing stations located at Sevilla and Calar Alto.

Three-hundred light-years away, in the constellation Musca, our sun has a twin. The star, charmingly named TYC 8998-760-1, is similar to our sun, but younger—just 16.7 million years old—and astronomers believe it could reveal secrets about how our own solar system evolved.

Two massive exoplanets are circling the star along wide, sweeping orbits. Earlier this year, astronomers using the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile snapped an incredible picture of the star system.

This book covers the work he did between 2008 and 2009, as he meticulously reviewed a minimum of 50,000 cases which were preserved at the CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies). He discusses several unusual cases in his book and much more.

Michael Schratt (private pilot/aviation historian) has been investigating UFO encounters for over 25 years. Between 2008 and 2009, Michael meticulously reviewed a minimum of 50,000 cases which were preserved at the CUFOS (Center for UFO Studies) archives in Chicago. In an effort to maintain an important part of our national history, Michael has re-created dozens of highly credible UFO cases by the use of drawings, illustrations and commissioned artwork. Many of these include USO (Unidentified Submerged Objects), actual extraterrestrial encounters, and pre-history UFO cases which have never seen the light of day. Michael has appeared on multiple media platforms including the following: Coast to Coast AM, History Channel, Paranormal Matrix, UFO Hunters, Fade to Black. In addition, Michael has been a guest speaker at multiple UFO conferences including the following: Phoenix MUFON, Orange County MUFON, International UFO Congress, MUFON Symposium and UFO CON.
