    this is such a neat thread. looking at all the ancestors i wonder how their lives must have been, all their trials, hardships, joys. I wonder what their thoughts were, wonder what they would say if we could bring them to our time.

    Oh what fun! I love learning about people's family histories; just thinking of all the people who had to meet at just the right times in order for you to be sitting here - right here and now - it's amazing really

    As for myself I'm 1/4 Hungarian, 1/4 American Indian, 1/4 Scottish, 1/8 Irish and 1/8 English.

    I'm lucky that I have people on both sides of my family who are fascinated with family stories and who have pieced together my history. So bear with me.

    On the Hungarian side (Mother's family) my Great Grandmother was a Rom, though she lied about her heritage in order to marry my Great Grandfather (whose family were Roman Catholics). They migrated to the United States just weeks before the outbreak of WWI. She denied accusations about her heritage until her deathbed when she finally admitted to having been the only daughter of her clan's Rom Baro (Big man, or chief) who had married the clan's Shuvani (wise woman/healer) and to having been a 4th generation Shuvani herself (or having been trained as such).

    On the Scottish side (my father's family) there is another interesting story that traces our heritage back to one of the supporters of the Jacobian Rebellion (the attempt to put Bonnie Prince Charlie back on the throne) and, being on the losing side at the battle of Culloden, ran for his life. Literally leaving everything behind him and strking out for the New World, though he landed in the French port of New Orleans and continued North until he finally settled in what is now Missouri where he became a Trader with the Indians and married a woman from the Ossage tribe and lived happily ever after until he died.

    The english and Irish and the rest of the Indian blood married into these two lines.

    I don't know much about them to be honest, as to clan names etc. All I have are the few stories that my Great Grandmother passed on just before she died. I DO know that I connected with her immediately the first time I remember meeting her (I was about five years old). She was always showing me "tricks"; mostly herbal and healing type things as well as explaining how to cook food with "intent" (if you wanted results). And she'd always end with "now don't tell anyone about it, they might think you are shuvihani" I had no idea what she meant, but I liked having secrets with her, so I kept quiet. She died when I was 16. She was 99 years old.

    One of the stories she told was about how her father (the Rom Buro) had fallen in love with the clan's Shuvani (her mother) even though she was involved with another man (a life partner I guess you'd call it). Big scandle since she was older than he was, and he was supposed to marry someone else. Anyway, her life partner challenged the Rom Buro to fight for her and he agreed, even though by their tradition he could have just taken her as his wife, but she intervened and said that if they fought NEITHER would get her, and left her partner for the Rom Buro. Her partner ended up marrying the woman the Rom Buro was supposed to marry.

    40% Scottish, clan Campbell of Argyle, descended from younger brother of the ninth duke of Argyle back, one of the founders of what became the Hudson Bay Company. Also some Coleman and Terry blood in there.
    25% Swedish, came from the town of Uppsala
    25% Welsh - private
    10% Remainder:
    French - Pamperin
    Holland Dutch - William and Mary of Orange, descended from the younger brother of William

    I too am Irish/Cherokee. I would swear that this was written about me. I used to have a very short fuse and (still do I guess, but it takes a blowtorch to get it lit these days, it used to be that a warm breeze would do it) It drives my wife nuts that I don't get worked up over much of anything, positive or negative, she thinks that it is unnatural. Well being a Black American, I think I am mixed with a little bit of everything. On my mom's side we are descended from African slaves, Native American (Nanticoke, Lenape and Powhatan), English and Irish. On my dad's side, we are also descended from African slaves, French Canadian, and English. Might be more mixed in there, but we haven't done a lot of research on that side. We know that my great grandmother was French Canadian and she married my great grandfather who was Black and she was then banished from returning to her family in Canada. My dad's mother was also mixed, but I am not sure whith what as she died when my father was only 13.

    My mother's father's family is very unique and there were even many books written about them. They were classified as the "Delaware Moors", being a triracial ethnic group that consisted of African, Native American and European decent. They did not classify themselves as being of one race and did not wish to integrate into the Black or White American society. But when my Great granfather married my Great Grandmother, who is also of a mixed African, Native American and European decent, she raised her children as Black as she was raised by her grandparents and mother who were freed slaves. Most of my family on that side, including my grandfather, have blue eyes, fair skin, Native American and European features. It is fascinating to me now to hear the stories from my Great grandmother, still alive at 101 years old, tell stories about being raised on a plantation in Virginia and then visiting her father on the Indian Reservation in Delaware. And listening to my Grandfather talk about how he was not allowed to sit next to my Grandmother in the movie theaters because she was a lot darker than he was and he was oftern mistaken for being white. I love hearing the stories, although sometimes sad because of the discrimination, but it is part of American history and my family heritage that I want to share with my children (if I have some, if not nieces and nephews ).

    Thumbs up Re: Would you like to share your ancestry?

    My Y-chromosome which my father passed on to me, and is the same in our male lineage, with just minor changes over thousands of years, is Gaul/Celtic.

    The X-chromosome which my mother gave me is either Gaul/Celtic or German, because my grandfather was of Germanic descent and my grandmother was Celtic and they both gave an X-chromosome to my mother, i don't know which one of the two she passed on to me..

    I don't know for sure because i only tested my Y-chromosome (with the National Geographic's Genographic project.) link;
    https://genographic.nationalgeograph...hic/index.html

    The result was; r1b1b2 which is typically found in western Europe and indicates the Gaul/Celtic race. Percentages of r1b1b2 in the male population in Wales, England, Belgium, Brittany, France, Scotland, Catalonia are over 60% link;

    My grand, grand, grand, ..., grandfather lived in southern france 17,000 years ago,
    when there was a social and cultural golden age, he and his family made the Lascaux cave paintings, and their traces can be followed even further back to the Kaukasus before that and up to 60,000 years ago.

    I will keep up their struggle for self-development and freedom as good as i can, infact they gave me the tools for it through their DNA

    It is interesting to me, Hatemachines, that you had your Y chromosome tested... most genetic studies begin with studying the mtDNA, that found in the mitochondria, which is passed on to offspring exclusively through the mother, through her mother and so on from eternity back.... hmmmm. Sperm DNA as well as Ovocyte DNA are recombant from the parent's nucleoid DNA and often pulls up long lost traits in a family's geneology line. Unless, of course, you need to know your paternity..... But anyway....

    I am a 9th generation US American on my mom's side.... German immigrants in the 1700s who settled in SC. Third generation received a land grant in NC, Appalachian foothills. My great great grandfather fought in the American Revolution for the South, had married a Cherokee Eastern Tribe medicine woman who lost all of her tribal rights by marrying a white man and was given a common last name in the Polk County area.

    There is a lot of English, Welch and Irish lines among the various generations as well.

    My dad's side of the family has been a nightmare to try to trace...supposedly French but all I know is that the spelling of the last name has changed so often even from father to son that it is a very tangled web.... Granddad was in the Navy at Norfork, VA and got killed in a train/auto wreck when my dad was only 13.....how conveniant....

    I moved to Europe and married an Italian so now my DNA has come back to the Old World pool...with a few new world twists as well.

    Default Re: Would you like to share your ancestry?

    I sadly have no idea what my ancestry is. On my Mom's side it's german/french/jewish/??? and on my Dad's side french/indian/???.

    Closest I can get to figuring anything out is that the Jewish side is under the last name Polin which was a yiddish word for promised land and the last name taken by many of the Jews who moved to Poland in the 1400's mistaking the word Poland for the yiddish word.
