Exclamation The Guardian: 'Taking them down fuels it more', why Conspiracy Theories are Unstoppable!

"SHUT UP AND DON'T ASK QUESTIONS".

Yesterday the Guardian published an article titled "'Taking them down fuels it more."
This refers to Facebook and Google taking down videos that suggest crisis actors were used at the Florida school shooting and previously at Sandy Hook.

Despite the fact there are countless unanswered questions and anomalies regarding both events, i'm not 100% certain.

The only thing I am 100% certain about, is that if the dark figures working for the establishment succeed in preventing people from asking questions, either through fear of ridicule or censorship we are in big trouble.

If they also persuade the general public that truthers are the problem and are in fact a public menace, it's GAME OVER.

Even BBC watchers and Guardian readers should see the sense in that.

The lies multiplied so rapidly Cori Langdon could hardly keep up. The taxi driver’s cellphone video of the Las Vegas mass shooting was being widely republished by conspiracy theorists, who were using it as “proof” that the massacre was staged by the government and that Langdon was an “actor”.

Langdon thought that if YouTube and Facebook removed some of the content, the online attacks and bogus stories might stop spreading. But it wasn’t so simple.
When some footage was taken down, conspiracy theorists saw it as further evidence that Langdon was involved in a cover-up. Some told her they were worried the FBI had gotten to her.

YouTube promotes conspiracy videos attacking Florida's shooting survivors

“It just fuels them even more,” said Langdon, who was harassed online even while being hailed by some as a hero for picking up passengers at the Mandalay Bay shooting that killed 58 people in October. “These conspiracy theorists love their guns. They are freaked out and paranoid.”
Concerns about conspiracy theorists bullying victims of mass shootings have escalated this month as student survivors of a Florida high school massacre have become vocal proponents for gun reforms, making them prime targets for online abuse. Google and Facebook have faced particularly intense scrutiny for their role in spreading false stories claiming teenage survivors are so-called crisis actors hired to promote gun control.

But recent efforts to restrict offensive posts have shone a harsh light on a seemingly intractable problem of the modern conspiracy theory epidemic: that censoring the content can reinforce and enhance false beliefs and that there is no easy way to change the mind of a conspiracy theorist. Some wind up on alternative platforms.

Social media companies taking down content and mainstream news coverage of hoax claims can also drive traffic to those sites creating the questionable content. That appeared to be the case this week with Infowars, a rightwing website that has fueled “crisis actor” claims and is facing consequences from YouTube as a result. Radio host Alex Jones, a leading conspiracy theorist and far-right pundit, has used YouTube’s clampdown to drum up interest in his attacks on the Florida students, presenting it as a “free speech” issue.

“If you believe your institutions are conspiring and then you expose it and then they ban your speech, how could you not think that that’s part of it?” said Joseph Uscinski, a University of Miami professor and conspiracy theory expert. If Jones and Infowars continue to face YouTube censorship, he added, “it will convince his fans that he’s on to something.”

Those people are really stuck. They truly believe it, and it doesn’t matter what you say

There’s no easy solution, though many agree that YouTube and Facebook could do a better job removing content that constitutes harassment and preventing its algorithms from actively promoting fake news. Infowars is reportedly one strike away from a YouTube ban, though Jones has a long history of offensive material, most notoriously spreading claims that the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre that killed 20 children was a hoax – a theory that led grieving parents to face death threats. If permanently banned, it’s unclear if Jones would end up hosting his own videos or using a platform like PewTube, which was created for “alt-right” users kicked off mainstream sites.

In some cases, fringe commentators with massive online followings have tried to push boundaries by avoiding explicit hoax claims and instead cast doubt on shooting survivors by simply “raising questions”.

Americans strongly opposed to gun control are susceptible to believing this kind of content, especially if the creators are facing threats from the “establishment” media or Silicon Valley.

“You’re motivated to attack information that is not consistent with your beliefs. This is just a human trait,” said Colleen Seifert, a University of Michigan psychology professor, adding that when pro-gun conspiracy videos are suddenly removed, viewers can become further entrenched in their beliefs. “Absence of information might feed conspiracy arguments, because there’s no explanation for the disappearance.”

Uscinski argued that efforts to expose harmful conspiracies can backfire, noting that a leading Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist became well-known after a local newspaper wrote about his blog. “Maybe it should be ignored.”

Brock Matejka, whose brother survived the Vegas massacre and was labeled an “actor” online, said he tried to argue with conspiracy theorists attacking his family, but got nowhere: “Those people are so set in their ways. They are so far gone.”

How rightwing media is already attacking Florida teens speaking out

When his brother Braden took down his Facebook page due to the threats and harassment, conspiracy theorists were emboldened, said Brock: “That was their proof that he was faking.”
Langdon said she was happy to see some videos attacking her disappear: “They just make me sick.” But months later, she still fights with strangers on her Facebook page, trying unsuccessfully to refute the conspiracy beliefs.

Mike Cronk, a retired teacher and Vegas survivor also attacked by conspiracy theorists, said it was painful to watch the Florida teenagers face harassment and that the tech companies “should be held accountable”.

The platforms should not let the abuse spread, especially considering how impossible it is to change the perspectives of believers, he added: “Those people are really stuck. They truly truly believe it, and it doesn’t matter what you say.”

    Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

I appreciate there not being a paywall: it is more democratic for the media to be available for all and not a commodity to be purchased by a few. I’m happy to make a contribution so others with less means still have access to information. Thomasine F-R.

The Guardian has become almost an absurd parody of itself. http://www.off-guardian.org gives examples of their more obvious lies.

The basic mindset is that the PTB cannot be lying to us about anything important because (a) the PTB are basically nice people (like Guardian readers) and (b) as a Guardian reader, I'm smart enough to see though any lies that the PTB might manufacture. As well as the old standby (c) it's impossible to keep any big secret for any length of time, despite many examples to the contrary (US MIAs left in Vietnam and Laos after the end of the Vietnam war, for example, officially denied by both governments for different reasons and now too late for them to admit the lies).

The only way that the Guardian can keep up the charade is to provide psychological analysis of "conspiracy theorists" without ever actually seriously analysing any "conspiracy theory" or questioning the official story of any event. They are also putting out a lot of propaganda about Syria and other places.

It's sad really since so many "well-meaning liberals" are devoted Guardian readers. No way they can wake up unless they get really angry about what the Guardian is trying to get them to believe, which is unlikely.

About Sandy Hook, let's think, why would YouTube need to censor the truther videos if the official story was true?

But, if we think about it, there were so many problems with the official story - skinny kid carrying heavy weapons, very high deaths/very low injuries, no triage outside the school, no photos of the entry point damage (or inside the school), very weird post-mortem reports, etc.

It's summed up fairly well in this book:

    https://www.naturalnews.com/files/No...tSandyHook.pdf

    There's even an attempted debunking:

    http://www.crisisactorsguild.com/201...at-sandy-hook/

which addresses ten of the smaller points in the conspiracy theory, not the bigger ones.

An important post, the issue is definitely becoming more critical, they must be desperate, right now these powers are trying to pretend they are somehow protecting free speech by not allowing it (??? their typical double speak)... I'm am hearing and seeing their main attacks on Alex Jones and now the Health Ranger... two of the most outspoken free speech advocates on the internet... There is no justification for either, and people should do everything to support both Alex Jones and The Health Ranger (share their posts through social media and email!!!)

...we should all do this regardless our personal opinions.... Because both must obviously be having powerful effect, AJ is destroying CNN's credibility, exposing the false flag attacks, and Health Ranger is exposing endless Big Pharma scams to maintain more sick people... both do it with great skill by providing good information and educating the public on the subtle details, scientific references, political analysis/commentary, etc... in a way that resonates with their audiences... And they are being targeted so blatantly, and at great cost to them both... If they go down... the implications would be very serious... who would be next?... Lower level targets with less legal and political sophistication would be mowed down in droves... the easiest and simplest strategy would be to drown both these media platforms with massive support... I've also seen Commercial Redemption figures being targeted as well... it's starting to intensify...

I agree this issue is becoming more critical - at the same time it has always been around for a long time. Noam Chomsky's quote on this subject is a classic. In his 1998 book the Common Good he said:

"The smart way to keep people passive and obedient is to strictly limit the spectrum of acceptable opinion, but allow very lively debate within that spectrum – even encourage the more critical and dissident views. That gives people the sense that there’s free thinking going on, while all the time the presuppositions of the system are being reinforced by the limits put on the range of the debate."

This is brilliant and insightful, but the irony is of course that Chomsky himself refuses to consider that the official story on either JFK or 9/11 may be true.

He wrote an entire book denying any conspiracy to kill Kennedy: http://www.realhistoryarchives.com/media/chomsky.htm

He is even worse on 9/11: https://off-guardian.org/2016/10/11/...homsky-on-911/

For a very smart guy, he produces absurd arguments on 9/11, and mostly notably refuses to discuss the actual evidence (e.g. Able Danger, Building 7, etc.).

To be honest, I don't know how somebody who is so critical of the official story in some areas (capitalism, media manipulation, etc.) can be so wilfully blind in other areas. It's as if there are some internal gates in his mind which say, not only "don't go there", but also "make up some absurd story which gives some superficial plausibility as to why you are not going there".

It's similar to the concept of Doublethink in Orwell's 1984, but not exactly the same.

I don't know how to deal with this issue, but I know for sure, when you meet somebody with this sort of knowledge filter/block, don't engage the subject directly. They will either shut down or get angry.

And the same issue is happening in terms of social media/YouTube etc. but there the only way I think is to set up completely alternatively channels. There's no reasoning with YouTube...
