Mindbending! The machine that makes itself!

Hi Everybody,

This little note drew my attention. Talk about industrial revolution! A machine that makes itself! It's enough to make us think of self reproducing Cyborgs!

The amazing thing about this machine is that everybody can have one and limits are boundless. It could be that we'll all have one in around five years (if we know somebody who knows somebody, who knows somebody who has one).

A little pre-replicator action? I'm liking it.

Anything that moves de-centralization along.

Terminator come to life? I'm not thrilled.

It's certainly a brilliant invention but it seems to work with plastic parts .
What about recycling of all these objects once they are out of use ?

Next,,,it will be able to replicate itself with metal parts & circuitry. THis makes me wonder what gonna happen when AI gets here in the mainstream. hmm machines that can replicate & think for them selfs YIKES

To many movies about this sort of thing...

Peace & Love

Shred and HJ, it is nothing to be afraid of, it is a 3D printer and therefore capable of producing most of it's own spare parts, it still has to be assembled by hand. Did you guys watch the video at the reprap site?

Thanks for this Flynt, excellent!!!!

To the detractors, the most useful of tools used incorrectly are a terrible thing. It is not the tool but the user.

Hi TheObserver,

Yes, you're right the parts do need to be assembled by hand..... at the moment.

Cars were each individualy made until Henry Ford came along and invented the production line, then in the 1970's the Japanese car makers (Toyota I beleive) invented the assembly line robots where no worker was needed, only the supervisor to check for quality control and perhaps a maintenance man for the robots.

Now we have a machine that, at the moment, makes its' own plastic parts. As one of the other posters pointed out, that with similar technology they can make circuit boards and chips as some eletronic component companies already do.

Put these together and eventually you will get a machine that can make all its' own parts and even create robots to put the pieces together. It seems that we are still in Henry Fords' time, but eventually the Toyotas of this world will make the changes.

That's what I will find fascinating, a machine that creates itself.

Best regards,

Steve
