I must be missing a point somewhere - what use is gold or silver going to be to you when you're on your own in a devastated environment?

How many times have you read of people who were lost or injured in an inhospitable country, who would have given their life savings for a glass of water or a hot meal? Okay so that's a cliche, but imagine yourself in that situation - a horde of gold or silver won't keep you warm, or feed you when you're starving to death, or save you from starving wild animals who would consider you a nice meal.

Myplanet2 is on the right track. Invest in survival gear. You can always use it to go camping afterwards if the 'S' doesn't hit the fan.
