I run a free version of Check Point's Zone Alarm on my current Windows XP systems because I can configure it to either automatically allow, automatically deny, or ask me whether I want the application I launch (such as Google Earth) to go out and contact whatever server it wants.

Firewalling is included on the kernel ( the core system ), like packet filtering with rules to modify graphically....
On linux packet filtering is working by default in secure mode, besides, i put an standard level of packet filtering, to avoid too much intervention for the user...
But in Linux, firewalling is a "default capability"
anyway has a Vidalia modul, to bypass NSA checks of ips...
