Default Senator Ted Kennedy collapses during Barack Obama inaugural lunch

Senator Ted Kennedy has collapsed during the inaugural lunch for President Barack Obama.

The brother of John F Kennedy and Democrat grandee was taken out of Washington’s Capitol building on a stretcher after apparently suffering from convulsions.

Mr Obama said: “I would be lying if I said right now a part of me is not with him. It’s a joyous time but also a sobering time. My prayers are with him and his family.”

The 76-year-old, who was later said to be conscious in hospital and being assessed by medical staff, attended Mr Obama’s oath-taking on the Capitol’s west front earlier in the day.

Senator Kennedy also suffered a seizure last May and was found to have a malignant brain tumour, which required surgery. He missed much of the rest of the year in Congress, but returned to the Senate this year, determined to help Obama pass sweeping legislation to expand health care.
