Default Downward spiral of Uk just gets worse!

As unemployment hits 12-year high of 1.97million, Jobcentres tell people: Go to Europe and earn 31p an hour

Unemployment has soared to a 12-year high after a record number of redundancies and job vacancies slumped to a new low, official figures have revealed.
The overall jobless total, including people not eligible for benefits, rose by 146,000 in the three months to December to reach 1.97million.
This is the worst level of unemployment since Labour came to power in 1997.
Meanwhile, the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance, rose by 73,800 in January to 1.23million.
It has now increased for 12 consecutive months and is at its highest for almost a decade.

The figure confounded experts who had predicted that unemployment would surge over two million today following a spate of job losses in recent months.

The jobless total has now increased by 369,000 over the past year and is expected to top three million as a result of the current recession.
Almost 260,000 people were made redundant in the last three months of 2008, the highest figure since records began in 1995 and an increase of 104,000 over the previous quarter.
Job vacancies fell by 76,000 to 504,000 in the three months to January, the lowest since records began in 2001, according to today's data from the Office for National Statistics.
Meanwhile, the number of people in work dropped by 45,000 in the latest quarter to 29.36 million, the lowest total since the autumn of 2007.
Manufacturing jobs continued to be lost, down by 101,000 in the three months to December to 2.8 million, the lowest since records began in 1978.
The UK's unemployment rate is now 6.3 per cent, an increase of 1.1 per cent over the past year.

The number of unemployed men increased by 106,000 in the three months to December to 1.18 million, while 790,000 women were out of work, a rise of 40,000.
The number of people unemployed for more than a year was 453,000, up by 18,000 from the previous three months, while unemployment among 16 to 24-year-olds was 616,000, up by 38,000, and the highest total since early 1995.
Average earnings increased by 3.2 per cent in the year to December, unchanged from the previous month, although the figure was 4 per cent in the public sector.

Lord Mandelson: The jobless can go and work in Europe
There were 1,000 days lost through industrial disputes in December from just four stoppages, the lowest figure since 1931.
But as experts warned it was now 'inevitable' that the jobless total will reach three million before the economy starts to recover, jobcentres are pointing Britons to posts in Europe paying as little as 31p an hour.
The Jobcentre Plus website is advertising almost 200,000 posts in Europe - many paying paltry wages - compared with only 61,905 jobs in the UK.

A job as a sous chef in Greece, for instance, is advertised at 31p an hour, while auxiliary jobs in Poland are going for 77p an hour.

Meanwhile, a job as a housemaid in Portugal pays £2.45 per hour.

The search by the Daily Mail follows Business Secretary Lord Mandelson's suggestion this month that those protesting against foreign workers could go and work in Europe.

Paul Kenny, general secretary of the GMB union, said: 'What a bleak day for our economy and for the workers and families of those now jobless.
'All across the world workers are losing their jobs daily at a very fast rate in this bankers' recession.
'The very minimum that needs to be done is to stop lenders repossessing their houses when they cannot meet their monthly mortgage repayments.'
Peter Mooney, head of consultancy with Employment Law Advisory Services, said: 'From early in December, the number of firms seeking our help in making redundancies simply exploded.

A cleaner wipes the windows of the Job Centre Plus shop in central Portsmouth this morning
'Things will certainly get worse before they get better. We would expect to see another significant increase in the number of people out of work in the figures published next month, as many more firms were forced to cut staff early in the New Year.

'That was when many companies could no longer delay making the tough decisions.
'It's unlikely that business will see much improvement for many months to come, and therefore it is also inevitable that these already shocking jobless totals will rise further. These are tough times.'
Work and Pensions Secretary James Purnell said: 'We know times are tough and we need to continue doing all we can to support people who lose their jobs find another as quickly as possible, preventing the long-term unemployment which has so scarred communities in the past from taking root.
'The Prime Minister and I are meeting key national employers today to plan what more we can do to help people back to work and into apprenticeships, including advertising more vacancies through Jobcentre Plus.
'Businesses are already helping thousands of people into work through our local employment partnership scheme and today we will be committing to helping a further 200,000 more into jobs over the next year.'
Employment Minister Tony McNulty said: 'Today's figures are disappointing but we will not stop giving people help and support to get back into work as quickly as we can.
'The pledge today by Employment Partnership members is another demonstration of how Government and business working together can make a difference.'
Other figures from the ONS today showed that the number of non-UK born workers in jobs increased by 214,000 to 3,8 million in the three months to December, while employment of UK-born workers fell by 278,000 to 25.6 million.
Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union, said: 'Jobcentres are creaking under the pressure of the rising numbers of unemployed. If it wasn't for the dedication and hard work of Jobcentre staff then people wouldn't be getting the first-class help and support that they expect.
'In stark contrast to the obscene bonuses in City, low-paid Jobcentre workers, many of whom received no pay rise at all last year, are helping people whose lives have been turned upside down by the economic crisis.
'The Government need to get ahead of the game by putting more staff into Jobcentres and by reopening offices to ensure the growing numbers of unemployed get the help and support they need.
'The Government also needs to drop its obsession with privatising Jobcentre work and step back from writing blank cheques to private companies who are demanding more money for contracts to help the long-term unemployed into work.'
Unemployment in the regions between October and December was (tabulate under region, total unemployed, change on quarter, unemployment rate)

North East 105,000 plus 5,000 8.4 per cent
North West 263,000 plus 33,000 7.8 per cent

East Midlands 142,000 plus 7,000 6.1 per cent
West Midlands 204,000 plus 34,000 7.7 per cent
East 165,000 plus 24,000 5.5 per cent
London 294,000 minus 3,000 7.2 per cent
South East 218,000 plus 16,000 4.9 per cent

Yeah Swanny, so true!, here's an email I got from a friend of mine, of course it's a joke but still something to think about!

As a native North Dakotan and excellent customer of the Internal Revenue Service, I am writing to ask for your assistance. I like to contact the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to determine the process for becoming an illegal alien. My primary reason for wishing to change my status from U.S. Citizen to illegal alien stems from the bill which was passed by the Senate and for which you voted. If my understanding of this bill's provisions is accurate, as an illegal alien who has been in the United States for five years, all I need to do to become a citizen is to pay a $2,000 fine and income taxes for three of the last five years. I know a good deal when I see one and I am anxious to get the process started before everyone figures it
out.

Simply put, those of us who have been here legally have had to pay taxes every year so I'm excited about the prospect of avoiding two years of taxes in return for paying a $2,000 fine. Is there any way that I can
apply to be illegal retroactively? This would yield an excellent result for me and my family because we are in the process of growing our family and free child birth would be wonderful.

Additionally, as an illegal alien I could begin using the local emergency room as my primary health care provider. Once I have stopped paying premiums for medical insurance, my accountant figures I could save
almost $10,000 a year.

Another benefit in gaining illegal status would be that my children one day could receive preferential treatment as well as
free tuition for many colleges throughout
the United States.

Lastly, I understand that illegal status would relieve me of the burden of renewing my driver's license and making those burdensome car insurance premiums.

Not to mention, free child care. What a boom it would be for us to not have to pay $13,000 per year in child care.

If you would provide me with an outline of the processvto become illegal (retroactively if possible) and copies of the necessary forms, I would be most appreciative. Thank you for your assistance.

I don't think we need to resort to attacking illegal aliens. That's a diversionary tactic that ignores the real problem (companies trying to save $$$ on labor) while placing blame on one entity. I thought that Americans (and people around the world) knew better than to do this?

Let's just knock it off.

I'm not attacking illegal aliens, although they definitely should be thrown out, I'm talking about those that are coming over legally, they just isn't enough work for our own people.
Foreign workers are being given jobs that the British should be doing.
TPTB are trying to break our national identity.
In the wars people stuck together and looked after each other, nowadays people from different countries still together but wont help out people from other countries, when TSHTF we will end up with civil wars. Take a walk around a big city in UK and you could be excused for thinking you were somewhere else on the planet.

The Polish for example come to UK and sign on the dole, send child benefit back home to their kids in Poland
I'm not racist but I don't like to see a countries national identity eroded like this, it disgusts me what the Brits have done to the Spanish coast.

There's nothing wrong with attacking illegal aliens as long as we pick the ones with scales, tails and really bad attitudes. Get rid of them and sorting everything else out would suddenly become a LOT easier.

This Job Center manageress shows that too much multi-tasking is the real reason behind unemployment in Britain. She also has a broom inserted into her a*** for maximum efficiency (off photo left).

The problem is that in many countries people work several hours a day earning $1. the goods that they produce are then sold for the price 100 times higher. tell yourself where the whole profit goes.

I'm with Swanny on this.

The reason is because unless you "equalise" the laws within each country in the EU relating to LEGAL (not illegal) immigration, you are going to have problems.

Its all very well to form a block of countries that creates a massive power base such as the EU, but when other nations within the block can walk into the UK and obtain benefits that citizens of the UK can't get if they go to certain other countries, thats wrong.
