From what I've seen, I think about 90% of all the "scientific dire predictions" are really about fishing for grants on some pet project.

They give a prediction that "X is imminent!!"
When asked, "When?" they respond...
"Well, we really don't know. We'd like to study that, but...."

it's a funding game, many times.
