Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow coloring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavorings.
DO YOU KNOW.. the difference between margarine and butter? Read on to the end...gets very interesting! Both have the same amount of calories. Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams compared to 5 grams. Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53%over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study. Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods. Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few only because they are added! Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavors of other foods. Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years And now, for Margarine.. Very high in trans fatty acids .. Triple risk of coronary heart disease . Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol) Increases the risk of cancers up to five fold. Lowers quality of breast milk. Decreases immune response. Decreases insulin response. And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING! Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from beingPLASTIC.. This fact alone was enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance). You can try this yourself: Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will note a couple of things: * no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something) * it does not rot or smell differently because it has no nutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic .. Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast? Horrible stuff ![]() |

i have always hated margerine my grandmother god rest her who was a great cook always called margering "plastic" ironicly

Great post!
I've never eaten margarine because it just never seemed right to me and I thought it tasted vile the first time I tasted it. When I became aware of all the above it showed me I had been right to steer clear of it. Butter is more natural and I beleive it's good for us in moderation. Lovely taste to me.....on toast, jacket potatos and used to stir fry veg. I eat very little processed food now and most certainly not anything thats been hydrogenated. Most people I have debated marg versus butter with believe that butter is bad for you and margarine is good. I try to tell people about what it says in your post but most don't want to know/don't beleive me/don't care. |

My grandmother used to call butter olieo, Sp ? Never used margarine, I heard this about 10 years back , I also have heard that if you do consume margarine lets say for breakfeast and then at lunch or sooner you have a diet coke, it creates a toxic substance combining the two together in your body. Any chimers on that statement?
I thought it was NASA space that was trying to create a plastic or something that came created this stuff, it was something like that. |

Amen Swanny. A friend tried recently to give me margarine that didn't even melt on my toast !!(not an issue for you Brits as I understand you like your toast COLD) Butter is magical stuff indeed.

My grandfather always preferred margerine (oleo) - during the depression, he had a small farm, and I think that butter was "second hat" to him. When oleo came out it was the new best thing, and he never went back. Grandmother had to have both on the table. <G>

My mom used Oleo for everything and we had butter too, but I buy margarine light, it has about half the oil as regular margarine. I guess I could start buying butter although I haven't noticed any side effects from margarine, except for this huge lump coming out of my shoulder, I think it's a second head! They always say two heads are better than one anyway!

I'm not sure if the product I use for toast is margarine. It's called "Moove Over Butter" or something like that and claims to use buttermilk.
I didn't even realize that ConAgra produces it. Yikes. I just didn't want butter or margarine. I don't use either often anyway. |

Eeewww. ![]() Think about all the people who are living on Kraft Mac'n Cheese made with margarine. Cuz there's a grip of em. At the grocery store, look at how big the margarine section is compared to the butter section. Probably the same ratio to the overweight masses. |

I don't know what vegetarianism has to do with anything but again, if eating too much meat and fat does not cause health problems (as claimed by Myth #9), then why is my bad cholesterol so high?
It's tempting to dismiss something because you don't believe in it. However, without hard science, you're basically playing with fire, especially if people read your site for advice. |
