- Who Knows ? - After what this guy seems to have experianced memories can play tricks - maybe it was a Cortina ? - How many time did Ford change the shape of that ?

I think James is speaking as best he can with regard to the past. However if he was (I'm not doubting his veracity) I'm sure they have ways of making you forget what you have seen. This is a commonly held 'truthism' and would apply to James as well.
