And seismologists say that although one powerful quake can conceivably make others slightly more likely elsewhere, the string of quakes is probably just coincidence

One of the most quake-prone countries in the world, Japan has been getting jittery, especially since several ultra-rare deep-sea oarfish have washed ashore.
The huge dragon-like fish, believed to be the genesis of sea monster legends, are a traditional earthquake omen. They normally remain in the dark depths below 600 feet where they can grow to be 50 feet long. Japanese folklore has long held that whenever a giant oarfish shows up in a fishing net, a major tremor is nigh.

In recent weeks, more than two dozen of the mysterious giant oarfish have washed ashore or been found dead in fishing nets off Japan's northern coast.

Experts are baffled. "I don't know why so many were found almost simultaneously," an aquarium official told the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun.

Mmmmm I suppose its normal in March!!!

Traffic was affected on Monday in Barcelona (northeastern Spain) by an intense blizzar that

caused the closure of the AP-7 at the level of La Junquera, on the border

between Spain and France.

Barcelona recorded during the early afternoon one of the most heavy snowfalls

since 1962, undermining the city’s public transport network, particularly buses.

As the level of snowfall increased, several buses began stopping in the streets

because they were unable to move due to the conditions and the service was

interrupted as a precaution.

In higher areas of the city, thick layers of snow covered streets and cars.

Some roads had to be closed to traffic as a precaution.

The highest part of the city, located 500 meters above sea level,

where is located the Tibidabo amusement park, was engulfed by snow.

Faced with this extraordinary situation, the Barcelona City Council activated

the municipal emergency plans applying to local conditions with ice and snow.

The City Council distributed several tons of salt in the upper city neighborhoods

and recommended that citizens do not drive around these areas.

Roads AP-7 and N-2 were closed at the level of the border between Spain and France,

in La Junquera, due to heavy snowfall. The traffic between Spain and France was

completely interrupted until "the weather improves," said a spokesman for the Transit
Service (TCS) in the region of Catalonia (northeast).

Of the 65 roads affected by snow in Catalonia, seven are closed, and on route 51,

the use of chains is required, said the SCT.

The violent storm of snow also affected the train service, which was interrumpred between the the
cities of Manresa and Cervera, informed the rail company Renfe.

The very morning following the widely celebrated Woman's Day - people in Southern Russia could not believe their eyes when they found purple snow piled on city streets.

Scientists confirmed a multi-coloured snowfall – ranging from light purple to brown – had landed in Russia's Stavropol Region.

Symptoms of snow mold become evident as snow melts, showing distinct dead patches of grass in the spring. Patches are usually circular in shape and can measure from 2 inches to 2 feet in diameter. Under optimal conditions, the patches may coalesce to be much larger. The leaves in these areas appear water soaked, followed by a bleached appearance. The affected grass blades appear matted together and are often covered by a whitish-gray moldy growth, appearing like cobwebs. Pink snow mold may have a salmon-pink mold visible, bordering the patch. These fungal structures are most evident when wet in the early day.

Snow mold is a cold weather disease with gray snow mold requiring snow cover and pink snow mold requiring only cool, moist conditions. Snow mold fungi are always present in lawns, but only become active when conditions are moist and temperatures stay around 0°C. Cool springs, with a long period of snow melt favors disease development. Fungal bodies can be seen with a magnifying glass embedded in plant tissue as match-head size or smaller structures, appearing light brown early in the season and eventually turning darker in color. Disease severity is high when a wet snowfall occurs before the ground is frozen. Frequent light snowfalls followed by snow melt, maintain the cool, wet environment that favors disease development. Factors promoting development of snow mold include, high humidity, temperatures at or just above freezing, persistent wet drizzle or fog, thick thatch layer, alkaline soil (pH above 6.5) and poor drainage.

Russian scientists who have analyzed it believe that the unusual colored snow is the result a massive dust cyclone from Africa entering the upper atmosphere and then mixing with snow clouds over Russia. Or something like that. In any event, the scientists say that the snow is perfectly safe but they do not recommend eating the purple snow. Do people in Russia regularly do that? Perhaps with all of the purple snow some Russians might get confused and think that it is raining ice cream. In any event, this is truly one of the most unusual weather events that we have seen in the world lately. Russian scientists may think that they know what caused the purple snow, but as for us, we still plan to label it as one of the world's great unexplained mysteries.

Two tropical cyclones have formed in the southwest Pacific Ocean.

Tropical storm Tomas has developed to become a cyclone, and is currently positioned northeast of Fiji.

It is expected to intensify to a very powerful storm by the time it reaches Fiji on Monday (GMT).

Suva on the island of Viti Levu could face winds of up to 130mph (209km/h) and heavy seas in the next few days.

Fiji's Disaster Management Authority has activated its local teams to ensure communities are ready and medical centres have been told to prepare.

The other tropical cyclone, Ului, has developed in the eastern parts of the Coral Sea. It is currently packing wind speeds of over 100 mph (161km/h), but these may increase to over 200 mph (322km/h) as it drifts westwards over open waters during the next few days.

A small portion of southbound Interstate 5 just before Lakewood Boulevard in Downey has buckled. The California Highway Patrol is on the scene blocking the number three and four lanes after a small portion of the number three lane "lifted 6 inches." Cal-Trans has not officially determined the cause of the damage was directly the result of this morning's magnitude 4.4 earthquake.
