In this Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2017, photograph, daredevil/limousine driver Mad Mike Hughes is shown with with his steam-powered rocket constructed out of salvage parts on a five-acre property that he leases in Apple Valley, Cal. Hughes plans to launch his homemade contraption on Saturday near the ghost town of Amboy, Cal., at a speed of roughly 500 miles-per-hour.
That means that his intended flight was three days ago.
What happened?

Ha ha - Like it !
I must admit I love the idea that there are still people this "Barking" in the world - It's how we make small advances ! ( even if we just learn to "never try that again" ! )
Love my models/toys and all things flying - The idea of a steam powered rocket is one thing but to strap yourself in to it with a flaky parachute as your only means of escaping death ???
Wishing Mad Mike Hughes all the best of luck in the world but I hope this doesn't become his obituary !!

Even as a 5 year old I never understood why instead of spending all that money on chasing the Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote did not just spend all that money on a Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise, he could have all the chicken he wanted. Oh well that's cartoon economics.
Well since the flight is on the 25/11/17 Mad Mike might want to put the kettle on good luck.

He has to keep it low enough so that he can come back and say that he didn't see a earth as a sphere so therefore the earth is flat and he can say he saw it with his own eyes. :) But yeah, CN tower is ~1500ft at the observation "space" deck ... close enough to see a similar view.

This bloke should have paid more attention in history class.
http://www.eaae-astronomy.org/eratosthenes/eratosthenes-99456
Eratosthenes, as chief librarian he read many documents and found out that at the Ancient Egyptian city of Swenet (known in Greek as Syene, and in the modern day as Aswan) that is located near the tropic of Cancer on June there is a well where on certain day of the year the sunlight goes down to the bottom of the well. He knew that in Alexandria there was no day that the great Obelisk did not produce shadow and he measured the shadow angle on the day the Sun was directly above the well in Aswan. He needed to know the distance from the well in Aswan to Alexandria and there several different versions of how he found out its value. The most popular one is that he send a slave to measure it in footsteps. The value that he used in his calculations was 8000 stadia (1 egiptian stadium is about 157.5 m, though the exact size of the stadium is often a theme of discussion).
With this information he measured the circumference of the Earth without leaving Egypt by assuming that Earth was a sphere and that the Sun rays are parallel when they arrive to Earth.

Rocket man Mike Hughes' launch has hit a snag. RT.com is reporting today that the federal government has blocked his scheduled launch by "withholding permission to use public land."
Citing a Washington Post article, RT quotes Hughes as saying: “It's still happening. We're just moving it three miles down the road. This is what happens anytime you have to deal with any kind of government agency. I don't see [the launch] happening until about Tuesday, honestly. It takes three days to set up… You know, it's not easy because it's not supposed to be easy.”
RT article is here (https://www.rt.com/usa/410926-flat-earth-rocket-launch-delayed/).

Well, when he's Governor of California, he'll be able to take off wherever he likes. :)
(Aside: I do feel a little weird making jokes about all this. There's a fair possibility that he'll kill himself. But I assume there are plenty enough people trying to talk him out of his insanity, and there really is nothing else the rest of us can do apart from look on.)

Unfortunately, 1800 ft is less than the three tallest buildings in the world. He won't be able to answer any question accurately even if his flight is successful. Less admirable.
However, if he was doing it for fun, just because he wants to, or for a "hold my beer" moment ... now that would be very admirable ... :)

UPDATE:
He Plans to launch on Tuesday or Wednesday/28-29th), but who knows. It'll take a couple days to set up the ramp, another day and a half to heat up the water, and then there's the weather. Meteorologists are calling for Santa Ana winds this week. No Bueno. Plus, he's been known to halt operations if no media people show up.
But....
He Canceled, BLM won't let him use public lands. So He moved to private property and is setting up there. BLM is cool with that. Talked with the ranger this morning.

wheter he will be successful or not, isnt really the point,
he has on the side of his contraption the words 'research flat earth'

for him, its already a success.

yeah i saw that vid a while back. my thinking was,
okay if there is a dome.barrier, i can understand it stopping the forward motion of the rocket,
but not the spin.
so i looked into it and found that the rocket is designed to spin in order to keep its vector and trajectory as straight as possible,
and it has built into it, a device that spins a weight in the opposite direction to negate the spin of the rocket.
which is activated at the desired altitude.
i absolutely acknowledge that some flat earthers do themselves no favours with some of the arguments they present,
but on the other hand, there are some arguments which remain uncountered.
who knows anything for sure?
DeDukshyn
29th November 2017, 17:53
That's the thing ... flat earther's seem to have this condition where they can't actually research anything for fear of being found out they're wrong. A simple asking of "why did the rocket stop spinning?" and a few subsequent google searches and everything is very logically and soundly explained - flat earther's can't do that for some reason ... And as SKAWF mentioned, the rocket wouldn't even have stopped spinning, it would have deflected off in another direction, while maintaining its spin. I don't need to test that to know it is true, I can run the physics simulation in my head. :noidea:
anyway ... :focus:
I was quite surprised to see how far he made it on his initial run, and am even more surprised he would want to do it again ... or maybe as someone mentioned above, it's all just a gimmick for advertisement ... what was written on his rocket the first time around?

Mad mike Hughes recently stated in a daily mail article...
His project has cost him $20,000, which includes Rust-Oleum paint to fancy it up and a motor home he bought on Craigslist that he converted into a ramp.
He planned to strap into his homemade contraption and hurtle over the ghost town of Amboy, which has a population of four, in the Mojave Desert and along historic Route 66.
'I don't believe in science,' said Hughes, whose main sponsor for the rocket is Research Flat Earth.
'It'll shut the door on this ball Earth', he said in a fundraising video, while explaining that Nasa is controlled by round-Earth Freemasons and Elon Musk is making fake rockets.

Nothing to do with NASA. The Greeks, who were pretty smart, knew the Earth wasn't flat 2,250 years ago. You can figure it out without ever leaving the Earth's surface.
Its good to question, for sure, but it's also good to come up with good answers. :)

First, there's no proof the earth isn't a sphere, but there is a lack of well educated people who would even know how to use math in a such a way to be able to know how to make this determination.
I think the real reason people are questioning this has a lot to do with this: https://www.globalresearch.ca/the-dumbing-down-of-america-by-design/5395928

Okay, here's your homework. There are three good threads on this (and there are others, too) — and I can see you've not read any of them yet.
That can be understood and forgiven, because you're a new member, but we expect new members to (a) be smart and (b) learn fast, especially about basics like this.

A live stream from Noize TV captured 11 painstaking minutes of the homemade rocket sitting on the pad on Saturday before... not going anywhere.
Hughes explains the different ways he attempted to get the rocket to launch, which he says failed because he could not get combustion due to an improperly functioning actuator. Or possibly plunger.

Flat-Earth theorist and self-taught rocket scientist ‘Mad’ Mike Hughes has catapulted himself half a mile into the air aboard a homemade rocket in Californian desert town.
The 61-year-old limo-driver-turned-rocket-scientist launched his steam-powered rocket and reached an altitude of 1,875 feet (572m) near Amboy, California on Saturday. The event was previously delayed due variously to technical problems and/or lack of permission.
IczYGJXclAI
“This is like the Falcon Space launch,” Hughes’ team member Jim told Noize TV before Hughes was loaded into the steam-powered rocket. “Don’t let him land on you.”
The landing was hard, as it sheared off the nose cone of the rocket and the man’s back was aching after the flight, according to AP.
“I’m tired of people saying I chickened out and didn’t build a rocket. I’m tired of that stuff. I manned up and did it,” Hughes said.
It is the Flat-Earth theorist’s second attempt to launch a rocket. In 2014, he traveled 1,374 feet aboard his first manned vehicle and suffered injuries from the flight.
It is unclear if the second attempt was enough to debunk the round-world concept. To prove that the Earth is actually flat the man is to build a “Rockoon” rocket that uses a gas-filled balloon to get to the upper atmosphere. The vehicle is to take him some 68 miles up. This may not happen for some time yet, as Hughes is going to run for governor of California.

“For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards, for there you have been and there you will long to return.” — Leonard da Vinci
I have to admire him for having a dream and following it! May he rest in peace.

I had a dream about jumping the Grand Canyon on my Raleigh Chopper pedal bike as a kid in the 70's. After trying to jump this ditch in Calderstones park at the age of 9 I realised my Grand Canyon jump was out !

Wheeled my bike home with a bent front fork and lost the billiard ball that was on the gear stick as well.
Pitty - I always fancied the "Knievel" suit I drempt I'd wear for the occasion !
God speed Mike
