Scientists Declare Human Skeleton to be 3.6 Million Years Old

One of the scientists explained the reason for the length of 20 year project as being due to the delicacy of the work involved, which he likened to scraping pie crust out of concrete.

A closer look at '3.67m-year-old' skeleton

It took 20 years to excavate, clean and put together Little Foot, whose skeleton was found in caves north of Johannesburg.

Its exact age is debated, but South African scientists say the remains are 3.67 million years old.

This would mean Little Foot was alive about 500,000 years before Lucy, the famous skeleton of an ancient human relative found in Ethiopia.

Yeah, after having spent 20 years using brushes and scalpels to completely "free" their skeleton, I wonder if it's a let down to have remains that are so "young"? Still, a major accomplishment for the team, and a testament to their stubborn patience. As to the location where it was discovered, I believe there are hopes for other major finds to come. But twenty years for this individual? Long wait! On the other hand, altogether it took 3.6 million years to get it to this point. :cool:

Well, a good point. After all, some of the other remains declared to be parts of our ancient human family are literally only a molar. Still, I don't think anyone is calling these folks out on their findings, so there is no need to admit being wrong, or even to question their findings; unless one of the team is concerned about your charge of incompetence and or fraud, of course, and decides to "come clean". Till then, I'd say their claim will stand. :bigsmile:
