Hello Ba-ba-Ra!
This is a most beautiful, quite natural phenom. I have only personally seen it occur once or twice.
I recently (Dec 11, 2017) saw an article about this on spaceweather.com:
DIAMOND DUST SKI HALOS: Ski resorts are some of the best places to see sun halos--rings and pillars of light that surround the sun when ice crystals fill the air. The most sublime halos are caused by jewel-like crystals called "diamond dust." On Dec. 7th, Kameron Barge was skiing in Whitefish, Montana, when he saw these specimens:

"As we rode the chair down into the clouds today, we begin seeing all sorts of halos, and sundogs!" says Barge. "It was an unforgettable display."
Ordinary sun halos are caused by ice crystals floating in high cirrus clouds. "Ski halos," on the other hand, are formed by ice crystals near the ground, kicked into the air by the action of skis and snow-making machines. A close look at Barge's picture shows specks of light in the air. Those are the glittering crystals of diamond dust which make these halos so beautiful.
Barge documented a rare variety of forms: a 22-degree halo, sundogs, sub-sundogs, a sub-sun, a lower sun pillar, an upper tangent arc, a 46-degree halo, a circumzenithal arc, and a partial parhelic circle--all sculpted from sunlight by floating diamond dust.
If you're on the slopes this weekend, and the sun dips behind a cloud of ice, be alert for "ski halos." They can make your day.

When ice crystals in the atmosphere interact with sunlight in a certain way, a beautiful weather phenomenon known as sun dogs (formally called “parhelia”) can appear. From observers on Earth, it shows up as bright spots on either side of the sun, and often a bright glowing ring around the sun, called a 22° halo.

Does anyone know the scientific explanation for these occurrences?

Looks like a hole in our ozone layer ... It could be anything, sunlight refraction, heck the color of the sky is really black, sunlight bouncing off the ocean makes it look blue... Pretty cool phenomenon anyhow...

Very Beautiful images!

Hi Foxie, you can find the explanation here: http://earthsky.org/space/what-makes-a-halo-around-the-moon
These clouds contain millions of tiny ice crystals. The halos you see are caused by both refraction, or splitting of light, and also by reflection, or glints of light from these ice crystals. The crystals have to be oriented and positioned just so with respect to your eye, in order for the halo to appear.

I lived in Scotland for 20 years and the sun together with the ice crystals could be quite magical. At night the skies at times were amazing with massive light pillars from the ground up, and all joining at a pinpoint above your heads as far as it is possible to see, and multicolored auroras swimming across the sky. Very surreal.

Does Sweden have Chemtrails?
As all of these chemicals build up in our skies, you can notice the
often neon effects changing the look of our normal sunsets.
With that much stuff up in the skies now AFTER 30 or more years
of this Chemical spraying, no telling what the after effects might be.
Doesn't look like UFO -- though they have been known to come out
of "clouds."
Really looks like pollution which Mother Nature put a geometric spin on.

This thread is a perfect candidate for one of Bill's "Nonsense" posts. I think I'm gonna go with Occam's Razor on this one; as tempting as the UFO's and ozone and chemtrail theories always are... :-)

That's crazy! We had that here today! Not quite as beautiful, but we had rainbows on either side of the sun. We call them "Sundogs" when it's really cold the sun will do that from my experience. Was -28 celsius today. I live in an area of Canada that can experience -50. Last year we hit -46 a few times. If the sun is doing that, we know it's going to be cold.

Just wanted to add. About two days (from the rainboows around the sun) later we hit a deep freeze. We have been in -35 to -48 being the coldest morning. It has just started to "warm up".

Someone posted a video, asked some questions, and at least two posts on this short thread give the correct answers to those questions. A few posts seem to ignore or didn't read the proper explanations as to what causes this, and a couple are way off topic, but overall its still useful for educating people if they read through the explanations actually given. Someone might learn something from it. :)
And just to add, I agree that the best practice is to look at simple, logical explanations, before even entertaining fanciful ones.
