The UK Home Secretary Priti Patel has approved the extradition of Julian Essange to the United States. In 2010-2011 the Wikileaks founder published thousands of classified documents and is wanted on eighteen criminal charges.

BBC (https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-61839256)

Mr Assange has 14 days to appeal over the decision, the Home Office said.

It said the courts found extradition would not be "incompatible with his human rights" and that while in the US "he will be treated appropriately".

Mr Assange is wanted by the American authorities over documents leaked in 2010 and 2011, which the US says broke the law and endangered lives.

The Wikileaks documents related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

The Australian is being held at Belmarsh prison in London after mounting a lengthy battle to avoid being extradited.

Extradition allows one country to ask another to hand over a suspect to face trial.

Responding to the home secretary's order, Wikileaks confirmed it would appeal against her decision.

Mr Assange's wife, Stella, said her husband had done "nothing wrong" and "he has committed no crime".

"He is a journalist and a publisher, and he is being punished for doing his job," she said.

In a press conference outside the British Embassy in New York, his brother Gabriel Shipton said they would take his appeal to the European Court of Human Rights if not successful in the UK's High Court.

Media company Wikileaks is a whistle-blowing platform that publishes classified material provided by anonymous sources.

"An image of Julian Assange is projected onto a building in Leake Street in central London on Sunday, April 10, 2022, to mark three years since his arrest and detention in Belmarsh prison while the United States continues with legal moves to extradite him. Assange, 50, has been held in the high security prison in southeast London since 2019 on a series of charges related to WikiLeaks’ publication of a huge trove of classified documents more than a decade ago. The Film About Julian Assange--Craig Murray

"Away from the Tory Babel over who will be the top “world-leading” sociopath, I just spent two evenings in the company of decent people. John and Gabriel Shipton, Julian’s father and brother, were in Glasgow and Edinburgh for the screening of Ithaka, the documentary that follows the fight by Julian Assange’s family to have him freed. I was moderating the Q & A.

The odd pub may also have been visited.

Ithaka is heart-rending, and it has an important message in rehumanizing Julian after over a decade of concerted (I use that word advisedly) propaganda aimed at dehumanizing him.

[Related: WATCH: CN Live! — ‘The Assange Family Struggle’]

The sheer baseness of the extraordinary lies told by the mainstream media about his personal hygiene — leaving toilets unflushed and even smearing Embassy walls with excrement — is something straight out of Joseph Goebbels’ playbook.

The cold calculation behind Assange’s treatment in his last months in the Ecuadorian embassy in London, when he was denied access to wash and shave, in order to produce the apparent monster for the photos of his arrest, is a true example of evil unfolding.

Two days before his expulsion I telephoned the embassy and spoke to the first secretary (a call I recorded). I explained that if, as we understood, Julian were no longer welcome, they only had to say so and he would leave voluntarily to the police station. Instead, we had that calculated piece of theater.

Presentation aside, it also enabled them to retain all of Julian’s possessions, including all his legal papers covered by client-attorney privilege relating to his defence.

As we heard in the extradition hearing, all of those papers were taken to Quito and then given to the C.I.A. This was admitted by counsel for the U.S. government who claimed that “Chinese walls” — a direct quote — within the U.S. government prevented the C.I.A. from passing any of that information to the Justice Department, which is running the case.

If you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you. But the fact is that it is the U.S. government that is applying for extradition and the U.S. government has stolen the legal papers of the other party in the case. In any other case this would lead to the case being kicked out immediately.

If you add that together with the fact that the extradition treaty specifically bars political extradition, that the U.S. government’s key witness is a convicted fraudster and pedophile who was paid for his evidence (which he has since denounced), and that no journalist in the U.S. has ever been charged with espionage before, you begin to start to understand the depth of state depravity that has kept Julian in the U.K.’s strongest security prison for four birthdays.

Pompeo Calls on Patel

I found this curious. Mike Pompeo, former U.S. secretary of state, who oversaw the plot to kidnap or potentially assassinate Julian in the Ecuadorian embassy, called on U.K. Home Secretary Priti Patel on June 30, just after she signed Julian’s extradition order and also just after Pompeo had been summoned by a Spanish court to give evidence on the plot.

That photo is more unusual than might be immediately realized. With a Democrat in the White House, it is extremely rare for a senior British cabinet minister, acting in an official capacity, openly to flaunt friendship with senior Republicans from the defeated administration and to hold official meetings with them.

Pompeo is now a private citizen. He could quite naturally be meeting Patel as a friend in her home — but officially, at the Home Office? This is really not done, or if exceptionally needed, it is done quietly.

What did they discuss in the Home Office?

Here is something else downright peculiar. According to The Wall Street Journal, Priti Patel asked the U.S. government to give her public congratulations for agreeing the extradition of Julian Assange:

“After Ms. Patel’s ruling on June 17, for example, a U.K. official asked the U.S. Embassy in London if officials there or at the Justice Department could release a statement welcoming Ms. Patel’s ruling, adding that she would appreciate such a show of support, according to people familiar with the request.”

The Justice Department declined to issue such a statement.

There is a very strange smell surrounding this extradition.

The film Ithaka is not a dissection of the legal issues, nor an in-depth recounting of the Assange case. It rather focuses on the devastating effect of his cruel imprisonment on his family, both his wife and children, and on his father John Shipton.

[Related: WATCH: CN Covers Assange Movie Premiere in Sydney]

John’s personal crusade to save his son is the main focus. The insight into the fundamentals of the case — that the man who did most to expose war crimes is the man locked up and tortured, not the people who committed the war crimes — mostly come from interviews with Professor Nils Melzer, then U.N. special rapporteur on torture.

https://consortiumnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/melzer-wide-2048x1342.png

Do go see the film — which has had excellent reviews from mainstream film critics. Chairing the Q&A sessions afterwards I have been struck by the number of tear-stained eyes when the lights go up and the audience mood shifts from sorrow to anger fairly quickly. It is a remarkable film.

Let me give my own insights. As a technical bit of film-making, it is edited down from what must have been thousands of hours of footage. During the various stages of extradition hearings, I was personally miked up every single day for the film for a total of over five weeks. Tens of hours of conversation between John and myself were recorded, not one second of which made it into the film.

That is absolutely not a complaint, you see more than enough of me. It is merely an illustration of the remarkable editing down on this film. Over a thousand hours were left on the cutting room floor to get down to just two in the film.

That of course gives the director, Ben Lawrence, and his editor massive ability to shape the narrative by selection. Ben has chosen to illustrate the bleakness of Julian’s isolation by emphasising the loneliness of John and Stella’s quest. I am sure that is artistically valid and it presents a real truth – nobody can truly share the despair of the family, and in the long dark night of the soul they are alone.

But I do wish to assure you that the families are surrounded and supported by a group of really loving and caring people, very much more involved than I am. They are not foregrounded in the film for reasons of narrative selection, but they exist and they know they have the eternal gratitude of Julian and his whole family and many of the rest of us.

I would further add that John Shipton’s eclectic mind and deeply philosophical nature are brought out wonderfully, but his immense charm and also his great pleasure in social company perhaps do not come across on the screen. Ben has focused on the more angular bits of John’s nature.

None of that in any way detracts from the experience of a superb film by Ben Lawrence, produced by Julian’s quieter but very talented brother Gabriel. Undoubtedly the public perception has already been turning in Julian’s favour. Don’t just go see the film: take somebody who might have their eyes opened to the truth.

Mike Pompeo & CIA Sued for Spying on Americans Who Visited Julian Assange in Embassy in U.K.

"Lawyers and journalists sued the CIA and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo Monday for spying on them while they met Julian Assange when he was living in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, where he had political asylum.
The lawsuit is being filed as Britain prepares to extradite the WikiLeaks founder to the United States, where he faces up to 175 years in prison for violating the Espionage Act by publishing classified documents exposing U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.
We speak with the lead attorney in the case, Richard Roth, who details how a private security company stationed at the London Embassy unknowingly sent images from Assange's visitors' cellphones and laptops as well as streamed video from inside meetings to American intelligence.
He says the offenses breach a range of client privileges and could sway a U.S. judge to dismiss the case if Assange is successfully extradited. "

Russian Dossier and Daniel J. Jones (https://thefederalist.com/2018/02/20/is-a-former-feinstein-staffer-running-fusion-gpss-post-election-russia-dossier-operation/)

hjB6CzVEPzg

From the upcoming documentary Enjoy The Show. Tore Says requested this clip go public today as the work of the John Durham investigation continues to reveal crimes and even treason against President Donald Trump.

TRANSCRIPT

As per the phony Russia Dossier, why is no one talking about Adam Walton? His texts revealed how Hollywood was right in the middle of it.

This lawyer has the point-of-contact between Congress Hollywood and Christopher Steele. In fact, another movie produced about that point-of-contact in Congress, who also had a foundation/company funding it, Daniel J Jones.

Daniel J Jones is Dianne Feinstein’s staffer and the man who drafted the CIA torture documents.

From a text message conversation between the United States senator from Virginia, Mark Warner and Hollywood lawyer, Adam Waldman:

February 16, 2017 at 10 49 PM, Senator Mark says, “Have had important call about your message. Will have to answer tomorrow.”

Adam responds eight minutes later, “Thank you. Standing by. Just want to underscore my opinion and the reason I got involved. This guy is going to do something catastrophic for the Dems, Obama, CIA and National Security. I hope someone will consider getting him to the US to ameliorate the damage.”

Who are they talking about?

Two months later, on April 10, 2017 Adam Waldman sends a text to Senator Warner:

“Hi. Steele would like to get a bipartisan letter from the committee; Assange. I convinced him to make serious and important concessions and I am discussing those with DOJ; Deripaska willing to testify to Congress but interested in state of play with Manafort. I will be with him next Tuesday for a week. I’m bringing Ben Stiller for the day of Hill and Administration meetings on Refugee issues in May. Would you like me to bring him by your office?”

Senator Mark Warner responds: “Sure.”

In other words, these texts were talking about how damaging Assange was to the Democrats, to Obama and to the CIA and how it was very important that they bring him to the United States. And for some reason, Christopher Steele was in the middle of all of it.

Lawyer, Adam Waldman replies over four hours later:

“Mark, call me anytime you want to discuss the above. Three, I am glad to communicate or try to accomplish whatever you want to do.”

Eight days later, on April 18 2017, Senator Warner replies:

“Been off the grid for a few days. Need to catch up with you this week on phone.”

This is treason. Treason against the People of the United States. Not only that, the film Actors Guild, Ben Stiller, an Envoy to the UN involved in Steele discussions with people on the Hill.

Well, in one of the episodes in this docuseries, you’ll find out exactly what went on with Assange.

So for all of you out there advocating for Assange not come to the US and not be freed, as you understood from that text, it’s Obama, the CIA and the Democrats that have the problem with Assange, not the People.

"Live from London on Saturday, October 8, as Julian Assange's supporters form a human chain around the UK Parliament, demanding the Wikileaks founder’s freedom. His wife Stella is expected to be among the protesters. The Don’t Extradite Assange campaign announced that they would need 5,000 people to form the chain, stretching in front of the Houses of Parliament, over Westminster Bridge, along the bank of the Thames and back over Lambeth Bridge. Assange is wanted by United States authorities on 18 charges, including espionage, over the publication of thousands of documents relating to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. He faces a 175-year prison sentence if found guilty. Former home secretary Priti Patel approved his extradition in June, although his lawyers are awaiting the outcome of an appeal in the High Court. Assange has been held in Belmarsh prison since 2019, when police removed him from the Ecuadorian embassy in London following a seven-year standoff. Source - Ruptly"

During a recent symposium at the National Press Club about the prosecution of Julian Assange, The Grayzone reporter Max Blumenthal asked DC attorney and Assange critic Mark Zaid whether prosecutors should really be depending on testimony from an admitted pedophile and liar like Sigurdur Ingi Thordarson, who has since recanted his allegations, to convict Assange.

Every time I read Julian Assange's name, or see his likeness, it makes me just about cry. Every time I think about the man that got Assange imprisoned - Donald Trump - I just about vomit. If Trump wins in '24, he will have the opportunity to kill Assange, just like Hillary wanted, but in any case, Trump was the lackey in charge of the globalists agenda to silence Assange and Wikileaks, and if he is chosen again to the Oval Office, he will continue to serve his master's agenda and make sure that Julian Assange remains silenced.

edit, to add:
It makes no difference who the next US throne-sitter is - whoever is given the US presidency will continue to silence Assange, furthering the globalist agenda. So there, you can clear your conscience, Trump supporters, because any US president is going to follow the Elite Global Controllers' agenda and support the Global Corporate Network that is enmeshed with the US Federal government. But don't continue to fool yourself that the man who got Julian Assange imprisoned and tortured for revealing the truth about the Elite and their financial and war crimes is a good man, anti-globalist, or actually supports citizens or the environment that we all live in.

Julian Assange is the most effective and, from the establishment’s perspective, dangerous journalist of his generation. And his imprisonment reflects the threat he represents – yet few mainstream media outlets have rallied to Assange’s defense. One notable exception: Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who recently spoke with Assange’s father and brother about the case and the likelihood that the award-winning journalist will be freed. Jimmy and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss Tucker’s willingness to buck the corporate media trend and address the Assange case.

Russian MP suggests swapping WSJ reporter for Assange
Evan Gershkovich and the WikiLeaks publisher are both facing espionage charges

If Moscow decides on a prisoner swap involving Evan Gershkovich, it should ask for Julian Assange’s release from a British dungeon, Russian State Duma Deputy Sergey Obuhkov said on Friday.

Obuhkov, a Russian Communist Party MP, told reporters that some members of the Duma have already proposed offering political asylum to former US President Donald Trump and trading him for Gershkovich.

“I say, let’s exchange him for Assange instead,” Obukhov told RIA Novosti.

Russian authorities detained Gershkovich in Ekaterinburg on March 30, saying they caught him “red-handed” in an act of espionage. A Lefortovo court has ordered the Moscow bureau chief for the Wall Street Journal to remain in custody for two months. He is appealing the decision and will face the judges again on April 18.

Earlier this week, the district attorney in New York had the 45th US president arrested on charges of improper business bookkeeping, supposedly related to “hush money” paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels, which they allege somehow improperly influenced the 2016 presidential election. Trump has denounced the charges as a politically motivated “witch hunt.”

Assange has been held in Belmarsh prison in south London since April 2019, after Ecuador canceled his asylum under pressure from the US. He had spent almost seven years in the embassy of the Latin American country, seeking refuge from trumped-up Swedish charges he called a front for US persecution.

After his arrest, Washington unsealed a years-old indictment charging the WikiLeaks publisher under the Espionage Act. He is wanted for the 2010 publication of the notorious 'Collateral Murder' video showing the US military killing civilians, as well as other US classified documents about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. If extradited and convicted, Assange faces up to 175 years behind bars.

Russia and the US last swapped prisoners in December, with Moscow releasing convicted drug smuggler and basketball star Brittney Griner in exchange for businessman Viktor Bout. Washington has faced criticism for not requesting the release of Paul Whelan, a retired US Marine serving a sentence in Russia for espionage.

"Julian Assange, creator of Wikileaks, is an activist who has dedicated his life to exposing the lies and corruption of some of the most powerful governments on earth. He’s been honored with countless prestigious journalism awards, yet he languishes in prison under horrendous conditions, vilified as an enemy of the state. It’s hard for the average person to know what to think about Assange, because for over a decade his actions have been shrouded in a fog of conflicting narratives and media portrayals -- That is by design.

In this video we’ll expose 6 lies about Assange that have been deliberately used to distract us from what is one of the most important precedent-setting cases for freedom of speech of our generation. If there’s one thing you should take away from this, it’s that most of what you think you know about Assange is false.

This case represents a critical juncture for the future of press freedom. It doesn’t matter whether you like Assange or not, or whether you’ve bought into the mainstream narratives against him. You should be very worried about the fate of journalism around the world.

It is time to recognize the stakes at hand and demand an end to this ordeal. Free Assange, and in doing so, protect the future of press freedom.

Ithaka - The Movie

A very sensitive, poignant and beautifully presented look at John Shipton (Julian's father) and Stella Assange's determined efforts to seek justice for Julian.

John Shipton comes over as a very modest, thoughtful and quietly articulate man as well. One of the main takeaways here is the toll that it takes, on all, but especially evident in many of the scenes with John and Stella.

Who knows what will happen from here but the fight goes on. There are some grounds for optimism but very understandably there are moments in this film where these are in short supply :flower:

For those interested who reside in the UK the film is currently accessible via ITV and free to view for another 3-4 days.

When it becomes more widely freely available I'll attempt to secure a copy for the library.

For now, the link to view: https://www.itv.com/watch/ithaka-the-fight-to-free-assange/10a4619

Sorry about the attack type words and general bad attitude but I feel very strongly about issues and then to be consistently attacked on the basis that I don't always conform the consensus and I'm somehow not meant to be here leaves me perplexed. So I apologize to the forum and I now out with grace.

I looked back at your comments in this thread and the sentiments you and others expressed. In IMO, the direction you took and to which others responded misses what is now the most important point of all. I'm talking about our humanity. Julian has spent 11 years in confinement without charge. It's time for our humanity to come to the forefront and for us to have a heart as human beings who have compassion for the torture Julian has sustained. I don't give a sh*t about whether or not he's controlled opposition. That's an argument I might have listened to and participated in many, many years ago. But not now. Julian is a human being and if we can't find our heart in his situation, we are worse than any controlled opposition could ever be. And I'm not even talking about the lack of justice here.

Thanks for this, refreshing.

Speaking generally here, not to anyone in particular. Cynicism is the mark of an injured person but a critical eye is necessary, but too often people lack empathy and nuance, not just for people like Julian but also when observing deep state actors. They therefore miss the effect of the actions of people such as Julian on certain players, like the heads of the CIA after the release of the emails and Vault 7 and their reaction to the mere mention of his name, this stuff isn't even subtle.

Who is Epstein (I don't believe for a second he's dead), really? Most people have no clue, not even close, but he was exposed enough through the emails. They were forced to put on a show, that must have been quite the upset for them, losing the island operation like that, and the rest of it.

I don't have any heroes here anymore but what does a man have to do, accomplish, and endure before his character has been made clear?

What I can tell you is that Julian is in jail. And I saw him in court years ago. He was not well. Some of the people I was with were weeping. He looked so frail. And this is before he had his mini stroke in another court case a year or so later.
And as Andre said, I too don't give a **** if he is or was controlled opposition.
I'm sure the CIA wanted to recruit him but my belief is that he turned them down if he was approached.
But all this talk is not of my interest right now. Right now, I want him out of jail. He still hasn't been properly charged AFAIK.
And yes, he is in Belmarsh. A few friends know his wife. I have spoken to Julian's father. Not all these people are actors etc. It makes my blood boil when people say he's not in the jail. We have seen Stella and the kids go to jail to visit Julian. You can go to Belmarsh yourselves to check.

You can see Stella coming into the shot to visit with the kids half way through this video.
Are they state actors? Is Julian's father a state actor and lying to my face. I don't think so.

US hints at Assange plea deal
The WikiLeaks founder continues to fight extradition to the United States to face espionage charges
https://www.rt.com/news/581273-us-julian-assange-plea-deal/

Caroline Kennedy, the United States’ ambassador to Australia, has indicated that the US Justice Department may consider seeking a plea deal with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that could downgrade charges against him and allow for a to return to his homeland.

Assange, 52, faces a potential life sentence in a US prison on espionage charges linked to the 2010 release on his WikiLeaks platform of highly sensitive US Army intelligence information provided to him by former analyst Chelsea Manning.

But speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald in comments published on Sunday, Kennedy said that a diplomatic remedy to the long-running Assange saga might be forthcoming, telling the newspaper, “There absolutely could be a resolution.”

When asked if the United States could arrange for a plea deal involving Assange, Kennedy said that this was “up to the Justice Department.”

While there has been no official comment on the issue from the relevant US authorities, a plea deal could theoretically be sought, which would see Australian native Assange agreeing to plead guilty to lesser charges in return for being permitted to return home to serve any remaining prison time.

ssange has been held in London’s Belmarsh Prison since 2019 as he fights extradition to the United States. Previously, Assange had been granted political asylum by Ecuador’s embassy in London since 2012, before his arrest seven years later.

“Caroline Kennedy wouldn’t be saying these things if they didn’t want a way out,” Assange’s brother, Gabriel Shipton, told the Sydney Morning Herald. “The Americans want this off their plate.”

According to international law expert Donald Rothwell, the terms of any Assange plea deal would likely require him to first travel to the United States to formally admit guilt in court proceedings.

“Everything we know about Julian Assange suggests this would be a significant sticking point for him,” Rothwell told the newspaper. “It’s not possible to strike a plea deal outside the relevant jurisdiction except in the most exceptional circumstances.”

However, a successful plea deal would likely require authorization from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said last month that Assange’s actions “risked very serious harm to our national security, to the benefit of our adversaries, and put named human sources at grave risk of physical harm, grave risk of detention.”

Glenn Greenwald interviews the father of Julian Assange. Both, especially Greenwald, seem optimistic that Assange will be out of prison soon. The continued persecution of Assange by the Biden Administration has become such a liability to the Biden Administration, especially since his Assange's release is a popular cause in Australia, and since the U.S. wants to improve their relationship with Australia and open military bases there .

Craig Murray in interview with Randy Credico recorded September 1st, while Craig prepares to travel to the US. The interview starts at around 16:00 minutes in. He's as eloquent as ever and provides an update on the current legal state of affairs surrounding Julian's plight.

Live on the Fly has a charming old school quality to it as well. The program also includes musical breaks, and Craig comes in just after Supertramp's 'Logical Song'. Roger Waters joins the show at around 33:00 minutes in too.

Here's a neat text summary of one of the main takeaways from Craig's segment:

"There have been noises made by the U.S. ambassador to Australia saying that a plea deal is possible. And that's what the Australian Government have been pushing for as a way to solve it.

What I can tell you is that there have been no official approaches from the American government indicating any willingness to soften or ameliorate their position. The position of the Biden administration still seems to be that they wish to persecute and destroy Julian and lock him up for life for publishing the truth about war crimes, and for publishing. We should never forget Julian is the publisher.

Julian is not a whistleblower. The whistleblower was Chelsea manning. Julian is just a publisher, just as The Guardian and The New York Times and The Washington Post were publishers of the same information.

So there's no evidence of any sincerity on behalf of the U.S. government in these noises we've been hearing. It seems to be to placate public opinion in Australia, which is over 80% in favor of dropping the charges and allowing Julian to go home to his native country...

The American ambassador has made comments about, oh well, a plea deal might be possible, but this is just rubbish. This is just talk in the air. There's been no kind of approach or indication from the Justice Department or anything like that at all. It's just not true. It's a false statement, in order to placate public opinion in Australia."

US Congress Members Call for Biden to Drop US Extradition Request Against Assange

November 10, 2023

MOSCOW (Sputnik) - Sixteen Democratic and Republican members of US Congress have called for US President Joe Biden to withdraw the extradition request by the United States against Australian journalist and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, a document published by Assange's wife, Stella Assange, showed Thursday.

As Members of Congress deeply committed to the principles of free speech and freedom of the press, we write to strongly encourage your Administration to withdraw the U.S. extradition request currently pending against Australian publisher Julian Assange and halt all prosecutorial proceedings against him as soon as possible," the document, published by Stella Assange on X (formerly known as Twitter), read.

The Members of Congress, namely James McGovern, Thomas Massie, Rashida Tlaib, Eric Burlison, Ilhan Omar, Paul Gosar, Ayanna Pressley, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Pramila Jayapal, Matthew Rosendale, Greg Casar, Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Jesus Garcia, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, as well as Senator Rand Paul, said in the document that "deep concerns about this case have been repeatedly expressed by international media outlets, human right and press freedom advocates, and Members of Congress, among others."

They added that "it is the duty of journalists to seek out sources, including documentary evidence, in order to report to the public on the activities of government."
"The United States must not pursue an unnecessary prosecution that risks criminalizing common journalistic practices and thus chilling the work of the press. We urge you to ensure that this case be brought to a close in as timely a manner as possible," the document read.

Since April 2019, Assange has been held in London's high-security Belmarsh prison while he faces prosecution in the United States under the Espionage Act. If convicted, the WikiLeaks founder could face 175 years in prison. In December 2022, he appealed to the European Court of Human Rights to fight his extradition.

WikiLeaks was founded by Assange in 2006 but rose to prominence in 2010 when it began publishing large-scale leaks of classified government information, including from the US.

A judge in New York ruled that a case against the CIA for spying on associates of Julian Assange can go forward. This means that the CIA will have to defend itself for spying on lawyers who met with Julian Assange while he was in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. The CIA tried to have this case dismissed and the judge ruled that there is “sufficient allegations that the CIA…violated [the plaintiffs’] reasonable expectation of privacy.” This is the first time the government will be held to account for all the spying it's done. CIA staffer behind Wikileaks' US hacking revelations gets 40 years

RT
Fri, 02 Feb 2024

A former CIA software engineer who allegedly gave a massive trove of classified information to WikiLeaks has been sentenced to 40 years in prison by a New York judge.

Schulte, 35, was the source behind the so-called Vault 7 release by WikiLeaks in 2017, which revealed the methods used by the CIA to hack smartphones and other devices. The bombshell report exposed how the US spied on foreign governments, terrorism suspects, and other targets. The release also reportedly triggered a secret CIA plot to kidnap or assassinate WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Comment: Indeed, this was the leak that drove the deep state psychos over the edge, and committed them to abducting Assange from the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

Prior to his arrest in 2018, Schulte had helped create the hacking tools that he later revealed to WikiLeaks. The CIA tactics included efforts to turn so-called smart TVs - televisions with online connectivity - into listening devices. Prosecutors claimed he was behind "the most damaging disclosures of classified information in American history."

Julian Assange, who has been jailed in London since 2019 while fighting extradition to the US, faces up to 175 years in prison on 17 US espionage charges.

Imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is set to find out next week whether he has exhausted opportunities to avoid extradition to the United States, where he faces life in prison for publishing classified documents exposing U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Imprisoned WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is set to find out next week whether he has exhausted opportunities to avoid extradition to the United States, where he faces life in prison for publishing classified documents exposing U.S. war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I do not agree with your stance BMJ... I am seeing positively, that people of AU sincerely want him to get him home... more dangerous for Julian is US!!! Period!

When a whistleblower reveals violations of international law... there should be ironclad protection for them!! Especially when the USA is involved!!!

US has been out of control for decades... and no one, not even their own journalists, holds US accountable.
Assange should be freed and compensated for the years he's spent in prison... and with severely restricted movement!
I hope it goes without saying, that all whistleblowers... all of them at every level.. should be protected from prison and persecution!

Assange Final Appeal – Your Man in the Public Gallery

By Craig Murray, February 21st 2024

-----------------------

"For the first time in the five years of these extradition hearings, I felt that the judges were genuinely listening and engaged. It was obvious that they had been briefed by the security services beforehand, that the only issue in this case was the placing at risk of US informants whose names had been revealed. It was also plain that they had read very little of the documentation, as they continually asked for references and seemed unacquainted with many basic facts of the case.

But as the day went on, they had discovered that there was very much more to be considered, and they looked like they were considering it.

You may think this strange, but they also both came over as rather nice people. They were unfailingly polite, and it did not seem a pretence. They both found the odd moment amusing that was natural to be amusing, and engaged sympathetically with the defence team throughout. Of course, I do not pretend that any of that is more powerful than the Establishment desire to see Julian crushed, and I am well aware they both have truly Deep State backgrounds. But I left encouraged."

Text:
What’s the plea deal the US is reportedly offering Assange?

According to The Wall Street Journal, the US government is contemplating offering a plea deal to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

Insiders revealed that the Justice Department might dismiss the 17 charges under the Espionage Act if Assange agreed to plead guilty to a lesser offense of mishandling classified information, which is only a misdemeanor.

Assange could potentially accept this plea deal from his current location at London's HM Prison Belmarsh, where he has been detained since April 2019.

The plea bargain would bring an end to the legal battle the whistleblower has been engaged in over his extradition to the US. In addition, any time spent in prison in London would be considered time served, potentially resulting in Assange being released shortly after the deal is finalized.

In response, one of Assange’s defense attorneys, Barry Pollack, said in a statement: “It is inappropriate for Mr. Assange’s lawyers to comment while his case is before the UK High Court other than to say we have been given no indication that the Department of Justice intends to resolve the case and the United States is continuing with as much determination as ever to seek his extradition on all 18 charges, exposing him to 175 years in prison.”

Britain’s High Court is expected to decide shortly whether to grant Assange a further right to appeal his extradition.

‘INCREDIBLY FRIGHTENING’: JULIAN ASSANGE’S US EXTRADITION WOULD LIKELY LEAD TO HIS DEATH'
/-vTK-Jj2ltc/-2.min --25/3/24-Julian Assange’s brother Gabriel Shipton says the possibility of his brother being extradited to the US is “incredibly frightening” because it would most likely lead to his death.

“I’m very, very nervous about the decision coming down,” Mr Shipton told Sky News Australia.

“I think we’re pretty confident that Julian will be given leave to appeal and an appeal hearing date set down the track.

“But they could always rule against him, and that is incredibly frightening.

“Julian being put on a plane to the United States where expert witness testimony has found that him being extradited would likely lead to his death.

“So it’s a very, very frightening scenario if the judges rule against him today.”

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange faces a further wait to see whether he can appeal against his extradition to the US.

Assange has been in a UK prison since 2019 and is wanted by the US for disclosing secret military files in 2010 and 2011.

In 2021, the UK High Court ruled that he should be extradited to the US, dismissing claims that his poor mental health meant he might take his own life in a US jail.

He is now facing a further wait to find out whether he can bring an appeal against his extradition to the US, the UK High Court has ruled.

UK Court hands Assange a partial victory in the Biden DOJ's attempt to extradite him.

US must provide explicit assurances that Assange 1) can raise a 1st Am defense, 2) will have the same rights as US citizens and 3) will never face the death penalty.

Deadline is April 16.

In the meantime, Assange remains in Belmarsh, the high security UK prison where he has been held for 5 years.

Every press freedom and civil liberties group in the West has urged Biden DOJ to drop this prosecution as a grave threat to press freedom:

The goal is not to bring Assange to the US.

Biden WH doesn't want the sideshow of a trial; daily protests; discovery into CIA; Assange on the stand; Biden as the first-ever president to imprison a publisher.

They want to kill Assange through conviction-free imprisonment.

The fact that any of this is even in question is shocking. Biden is actually considering the death penalty for journalism? Yes, he is. Where are all the “liberals” at CNN, NBC News and the Washington Post? Totally shameful.

The British High Court in London has put the extradition of Julian Assange on hold until the United States provides assurances that he would get a fair trial in the U.S. without facing the death penalty. If those assurances are not met, Assange will be granted the right to a full appeal hearing. Speaking outside the court Tuesday, Stella Assange called for the Biden administration to “drop this shameful case” against her husband. “Julian should never have been imprisoned for a single day,” she said. We speak with MP Jeremy Corbyn, who led the U.K. Labour Party from 2015 to 2020 and who has been calling for all charges against Assange to be dropped. “The pressure needs to now go on to the Biden administration,” Corbyn says. “If Julian goes down for this, every serious journalist around the world is going to be slightly more cautious about exposing war crimes, about exposing corporate greed.”/Democracy Now/

Synopsis

Despite being detained, silenced and hidden from public view in maximum security Belmarsh Prison, multi-award-winning Australian journalist and publisher Julian Assange has become one of the loudest voices for free speech of our times. He has also risked everything to bring truth to light.

The disclosures of WikiLeaks and Assange from 2010 onwards ignited a firestorm of controversy and a relentless ongoing pursuit by the most powerful Empire on the planet.

‘THE TRUST FALL: JULIAN ASSANGE’ examines the meaning and significance of the insights that WikiLeaks shared with the world, the resulting behaviour of the governments involved, the extraordinary personal risk taken by Assange, and the wider fundamental issues around press freedom that affect all of us and our right to know.

Filmed over two years on three continents and in ten cities, the film features an array of luminaries including Daniel Ellsberg, John Pilger, Tariq Ali and Chris Hedges, with the insights of experts including Jennifer Robinson, Jill Stein, Stefania Maurizi and Nils Melzer, in addition to reflections of Assange’s family including Stella Assange, John Shipton and Gabriel Shipton.

Examining the motives of this peace activist and innovator, this astounding, shocking and inspiring film invites viewers to embark on a journey of understanding, where the circumstances are unprecedented, and the destination unexpected.

US Issues Assurances on Assange

UPDATED WITH TEXT OF DIPLOMATIC NOTE: The U.S. Tuesday filed assurances on the death penalty and the 1st Amendment, the latter of which Stella Assange called a “non-assurance.”

The United States Embassy on Tuesday filed two assurances with the British Foreign Office, saying it would not seek the death penalty against imprisoned WikiLeaks‘ publisher Julian Assange and would allow Assange “the ability to raise and seek to reply upon at trial … the rights and protections given under the First Amendment,” according to the U.S. diplomatic note.

Assange’s wife Stella Assange said the note “makes no undertaking to withdraw the prosecution’s previous assertion that Julian has no First Amendment rights because he is not a U.S citizen. Instead,” she said, “the US has limited itself to blatant weasel words claiming that Julian can ‘seek to raise’ the First Amendment if extradited.”

The note issues an empty statement, namely, that Assange can try to raise the First Amendment at trial, but the U.S. Department of Justice can’t guarantee he would get it, which is precisely what it must do under British extradition law based on the European Convention on Human Rights.

The U.S. is legally restricted to assure a free speech guarantee to Assange equivalent to Article 10 of the European Convention, which the British court is bound to follow. but without that assurance, Assange should be freed according to a British Crown Prosecution Service comment on extraditions.

In USAID v. Alliance for Open Society, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2020 that non-U.S. citizens outside the U.S. don’t possess constitutional rights. Both former C.I.A. Director Mike Pompeo and Gordon Kromberg, Assange’s U.S. prosecutor, have said Assange does not have First Amendment protection.

Because of the separation of powers in the United States, the executive branch’s Justice Department can’t guarantee to the British courts what the U.S. judicial branch decides about the rights of a non-U.S. citizen in court, said Marjorie Cohn, law professor and former president of the National Lawyers’ Guild.

“Let’s assume that … the Biden administration, does give assurances that he would be able to raise the First Amendment and that the [High] Court found that those were significant assurances,” Cohn told Consortium News‘ webcast CN Live! last month.

“That really doesn’t mean anything, because one of the things that the British courts don’t understand is the U.S. doctrine of separation of powers,” she said.

“The prosecutors can give all the assurances they want, but the judiciary, another [one] .. of these three branches of government in the U.S., doesn’t have to abide by the executive branch claim or assurance,” Cohn said.

In other words, whether Assange can rely on the First Amendment in his defense in a U.S. court is up to that court not Kromberg or the Department of Justice, which issued the assurance on Tuesday.

“The United States has issued a non-assurance in relation to the First Amendment,” said Stella Assange.

Assange’s legal team now has the right to challenge the credibility and validity of the U.S. assurances filed on Tuesday. The U.S. would then have a right to reply to Assange’s legal submissions to the court, which will hold a hearing on May 20 to determine whether or not to accept the U.S. assurances.

If the court does, Assange can be put on a plane to the U.S. theoretically that day. If not Assange would be granted a full appeal against the Home Office’s 2022 order to extradite him. Assange is wanted in the U.S. on 17 charges under the 1917 Espionage Act and one on conspiracy to commit computer intrusion. He faces up to 175 years in a U.S. dungeon.

“The diplomatic note does nothing to relieve our family’s extreme distress about his future — his grim expectation of spending the rest of his life in isolation in US prison for publishing award-winning journalism,” Stella Assange said.

Here is a facsimile of the Diplomatic Note the U.S. sent the U.K. on Tuesday:

In its 66-page ruling on March 26, the two High Court judges wrote Kromberg wouldn’t have said Assange would be without First Amendment rights at trial “unless that was a tenable argument that the prosecution was entitled to deploy with a real prospect of success.”

“If such an argument were to succeed it would (at least arguably) cause the applicant [Assange] prejudice on the grounds of his non-US citizenship (and hence, on the grounds of his nationality),” the judges said. They added:

“The applicant wishes to argue, at any trial in the United States, that his actions were protected by the First Amendment. He contends that if he is given First Amendment rights, the prosecution will be stopped. The First Amendment is therefore of central importance to his defence to the extradition charge.”

This is the statement Stella Assange put out on X Tuesday at 11:36 am EDT:

“The United States has issued a non-assurance in relation to the First Amendment, and a standard assurance in relation to the death penalty. It makes no undertaking to withdraw the prosecution’s previous assertion that Julian has no First Amendment rights because he is not a U.S citizen. Instead, the US has limited itself to blatant weasel words claiming that Julian can ‘seek to raise’ the First Amendment if extradited. The diplomatic note does nothing to relieve our family’s extreme distress about his future — his grim expectation of spending the rest of his life in isolation in US prison for publishing award-winning journalism. The Biden Administration must drop this dangerous prosecution before it is too late.”

Julian Assange freed in US plea deal

After a years-long legal saga, Wikileaks says that founder Julian Assange has left the UK after reaching a deal with US authorities that will see him plead guilty to criminal charges and go free.

Assange, 52, was charged with conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information.

For years, the US has argued that the Wikileaks files - which disclosed information about the Iraq and Afghanistan wars - endangered lives.

He has spent the last five years in a British prison, from where he has been fighting extradition to the US.

According to CBS, the BBC's US partner, Assange will spend no time in US custody and will receive credit for the time spent incarcerated in the UK.

Assange will return to Australia, according to a letter from the justice department.

On X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, Wikileaks said that Assange left Belmarsh prison earlier on Tuesday after 1,901 days in a small cell.

He was then "released and Stanstead airport during the afternoon, where he boarded a plane and departed the UK" to return to Australia, the statement said.

'Grateful my son's ordeal is coming to an end': Julian Assange's mother:

Julian Assange's mother Christine has released a statement saying she is "grateful" her son's ordeal is "coming to an end". WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has agreed to enter a plea deal with the Biden administration that would allow him to immediately return to Australia. Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell reveals a statement from Christine Assange following her son's release. ‘This shows the importance and power of quiet diplomacy. 'I am grateful for those, unseen hard-working people who put Julian's welfare first. 'The past 14 years has obviously taken a toll.'

Julian Assange leaves ‘legacy’ with creation of WikiLeaks:

SIuZ2_gxbxE
‘Bring Julian Assange Home’ Campaigner Antony Loewenstein says WikiLeaks (https://wikileaks.org/-News-.html) has released more “vital documents” about the way the world works than “any other organisation”.

Mr Loewenstein told Sky News Australia that the “legacy” of Julian Assange through WikiLeaks is “clear”.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has agreed to enter a plea deal with the Biden administration that would allow him to avoid prison in the United States, according to newly filed federal court documents.

Under the new terms, the Justice Department will seek a 62-month sentence, which is equal to the amount of time Assange has already served in prison in London while fighting his extradition to the US.

This is wonderful news! But I'm keeping fingers crossed until Wednesday... until Assange truly arrives in Australia... I echo all the above and imagine he will have accumulated a lot of PTSD trauma and baggage in the last 7 years and need a LOT of counselling. I wonder too whether part of the deal is for Julian and Wikileaks is to stfu effective immediately?

Fantastic news though! I hope all our love, thoughts and prayers sustain him in the days to come . . .

This is well worth watching, presages and pretty much describes the genesis planning of the Q operation and related background activities attempt to prevent Clinton/Obama from gaining control in 2016 and beyond.

(Clear which side deep-stater Pence is on - he is out crying foul about the release of Assange.)

Mike Pence
@Mike_Pence
Julian Assange endangered the lives of our troops in a time of war and should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The Biden administration’s plea deal with Assange is a miscarriage of justice and dishonors the service and sacrifice of the men and women of our Armed Forces and their families. There should be no plea deals to avoid prison for anyone that endangers the security of our military or the national security of the United States. Ever. https://nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna158695

@TPV_John
Oh really, Mike?

You mean Julian Assange EXPOSED WAR CRIMES and the entire surveillance apparatus that was being weaponized against US citizens. He also KNOWS who killed Seth Rich, and helped put a huge spotlight on Pizzagate.

There is ONLY ONE reason you would consider those things to be “endangering to national security”.

WHAT do you have to hide, Mike?

I’m going to say this now…If you are questioning the release of Julian in anyway, I’m going to automatically assume you are a BAD actor and or possibly complicit in some form of TREASON OR SEDITION.

@Mike_Pence BETRAYED @realDonaldTrump and the entire United States on January 6, 2021.

I think he fits the bill nicely.

Mike Pence may be the single biggest piece of **** in a deep state filled to the brim with ****.

That is quite an accomplishment.

Julian’s travel to freedom comes at a massive cost: Julian will owe USD 520,000 which he is obligated to pay back to the Australian government for charter Flight VJ199. He was not permitted to fly commercial airlines or routes to Saipan and onward to Australia. Any contribution big or small is much appreciated.

'People should understand cynicism of Biden releasing Assange for political advantage'

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange left the maximum security prison in London on June 24 after agreeing to a plea-bargain deal on one espionage charge in a US court to bring an end to his years-long legal drama.

Australian citizen Assange was charged with 18 offenses, carrying a maximum sentence of 175 years in prison, for publishing inconvenient truths about the US' invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Human rights activists and investigative journalists reflected on the development to Sputnik.

◾️ Lucy Komisar, investigative journalist based in New York: "I was very pleased and happy to learn that Julian Assange will be free after more than a decade of imprisonment in the UK, both the years when he was forced to find safety in the Ecuadorian Embassy and then in the harsh conditions of Belmarsh prison.”

“I think Assange is being released now by Joe Biden in the hopes it might improve his standing with progressives and win him a few more votes,” Komisar said. “People concerned about Assange will understand the cynicism of Biden keeping him locked up until he thought he might get some advantage by releasing him.”

◾️ Craig Murray, former British diplomat: "I don't think Joe Biden wanted Julian to arrive in the middle of an election campaign. To be seen to be attacking freedom of speech, to be attacking constitutional rights is not a good look for the United States president whose election campaign is already in a lot of trouble over his support for genocide in Gaza."

◾️ Taylor Hudak, independent investigative journalist: "The prosecution should have never happened in the first place. Mr. Assange should have never spent one day in jail for the so-called crime of journalism. WikiLeaks has never published a false document. It is unfortunate that Mr. Assange had to plead guilty to any charge."

Biden's Assange plea deal ‘ploy’ could spell goodbye to free speech for future journalists, whistleblowers

The plea deal for Julian Assange that allowed him to walk out of a UK prison “raises some serious concerns regarding the effects on the free press and the circumstances surrounding this agreement,” Andy Vermaut, Editor-in-Chief for Belgian Indegazette told Sputnik.

Details of the plea bargain are yet to be released, but it may require Assange to compromise or “give up some basic rights […] such as free speech, mobility, or ongoing monitoring, which can be regarded as concessions that erode the principles of press freedom,” said the human rights activist.

Andy Vermaut suggested several factors may have fed into Assange’s release:

1️⃣ “There may be geopolitical factors involved, "The US may be trying to prevent further deterioration of diplomatic relations and regain its position as a protector of the freedom of the press,” speculated the activist.

2️⃣ "The Biden administration could be using this deal as a strategy to divert attention from other political issues or to woo certain voters before the presidential debate,” Vermaut said, in a nod at the looming Biden-Trump standoff.

3️⃣ The whistleblower’s extended period of detention had elicited concerns from human rights groups, which “could have called for his release.”

If this is a ploy by the Biden administration, it may appeal to liberal voters and those who support civil liberties. But this could be counterproductive if it is perceived as a calculated move rather than a move towards the principle of justice, said the pundit.

If Assange is forced to agree to such things, it might end up “paving the way for future journalists and whistleblowers to be prosecuted,” Vermaut concluded.

Plea Deal Reached In Assange Case!

rr_i3uaL_Z4
US authorities have agreed to drop their demand for Julian Assange to be extradited from the UK after reaching a plea deal with the WikiLeaks founder. In return for pleading guilty to one count of conspiracy to obtain and disclose national defence information, Assange will be sentenced to time served, 62 months - the time he has already spent in a British prison.

Jimmy and Americans’ Comedian Kurt Metzger discuss the welcome news that Assange has been freed, even if he was compelled to plead guilty to a crime he did not commit.

Rizotto
25th June 2024, 20:21
What? Almost $600,000 cost for a one-way charter flight that Assange is forced to take for the plea deal gimmick? I don't know what a charter flight halfway across the planet normally costs, but it can't be that much. Perhaps some of you know?

It's more like the deep state is still trying to ruin Assange. Sounds like money laundering for the benefit of the Biden crime family and the DNC campaigns.

Michael Walker speaks to Yanis Varoufakis about his friend, Julian Assange

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXfsPL9dpDQ&ab_channel=NovaraMedia
A very interesting discussion with Yanis V who said that Julian Assange had received 3 offers in all, the first of which was a full pardon from the Trump Aministration while he was in the Ecuador Embassy, in return for revealing the sources of the Clinton emails, which he refused to do.

The 2nd offer was about 8-9 months ago which involved him being flown to Virginia and sentenced to 5 years and then released to go back to Australia. Again he refused.

You will note that Varoufakis is clearly unhappy with the "settlement".

re the 'first offer'..... from the Trump Administration - it's a bloody shame the proviso of specifically revealing the source of the Clinton Emails was included - because Julian all but spelled out the actual name - by inference - due to the policy of Wikileaks never revealing it's sources... poor Seth Rich - 'they' got rid of him so the Russia Russia Russia psyop against Trump could be played out - :( -

❗️ A US judge has accepted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's plea deal after he pled guilty to one charge of conspiring to unlawfully obtain and disseminate classified information relating to the national defense of the United States, the Guardian reported.

The United States will next take steps to immediately overturn remaining charges against Assange in the Eastern District of Virginia, the report said.

"I believe the First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in contradiction," Assange said when asked to explain the charge against him in his own words, the Australian channel ABC reported.

"Working as a journalist I encouraged my source to provide information that was said to be classified in order to publish that information," the news agency cited Assange.

"I believed the First Amendment protected that activity. I believe the First Amendment and the Espionage Act are in contradiction," Assange insisted, the report said.

He explained he was pleading guilty because fighting the case in court would be challenging, according to the report.

US attorney Matthew McKenzie said once the sentence is pronounced the US will move to dismiss the indictment in the Eastern District of Virginia, the report said.

Court is in session in the case of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange at the District Court of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Australian channel ABC reported.

"In the U.S. District Court on the island of Saipan, the long-awaited hearing in the case of Julian Assange has begun. Assange sits in the courtroom in a black suit. Behind him are Australian Ambassador to the US Kevin Rudd, Australian Ambassador to the UK Stephen Smith and human rights lawyer Jennifer Robinson. All stood up when Chief Justice Romana Manglona entered the courtroom. Assange is expected to plead guilty to one criminal charge but will be released shortly with time served in a British prison," the outlet noted on its website.

Assange is accompanied in the courtroom by Australian Ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd, the Australian outlet 9News reported.

According to a schedule on the court's website, the hearing in the case of the US v. Julian Paul Assange will be open to the public, but online streaming as well as video and audio recording of the session is prohibited under US law. The schedule indicates Assange will appear in the courtroom, followed by his formal arraignment and the defendant's statement to the court.

The judge for the hearing will be Ramona Manglona, who has served as chief judge of the Northern Mariana Islands District Court since 2011.

'Julian Assange may well be one of the most infamous and influential people in the world right now, and his release from British custody this week will only raise his profile. His supporters call him a champion of the truth, while his detractors say his work has gotten good people killed.

Jailed in 2019 after a long stay of asylum in the London Ecuadorian Embassy, Julian has feared extradition to the US under the Espionage Act since his WikiLeaks scandal. But now, it seems that quiet diplomacy has secured his release and will return to his native Australia a free man after he secured a plea deal.

Piers Morgan brings journalist Michael Shellenberger, host of Judging Freedom Judge Andrew Napolitano, radio and podcast host Ben Ferguson, former Conservative MP Louise Mensch and US presidential candidate Robert F Kennedy Jr on to Piers Morgan Uncensored to discuss Assange’s past, present and future. To his supporters, Julian Assange is a valiant campaigner for truth. To his critics, he is a publicity seeker who has endangered lives by putting a mass of sensitive information into the public domain.

The WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has walked free from a court in the US Pacific island territory of Saipan, after pleading guilty to violating US espionage law, in a deal that left him free to return home to Australia and brought an end to an extraordinary 14-year legal saga.

On Wednesday, the US’s smallest and most remote federal district court accepted a plea deal reached between Assange and the US government, under terms which required him to admit guilt to one criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defence documents.

In return he was sentenced to time served, with no supervisory period or financial penalty, due to time already served in Belmarsh prison in London. He flew out of Saipan, headed for Canberra, at lunchtime on Wednesday.

His release ends a legal saga that spanned more than a decade, in which Assange spent five years in the high-security jail and seven years at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, battling extradition to the US, where he faced 18 criminal charges.
Assange is described by those who have worked with him as intense, driven and highly intelligent, with an exceptional ability to crack computer codes.

He set up Wikileaks, which publishes confidential documents and images, in 2006, making headlines around the world in April 2010 when it released footage showing US soldiers shooting dead 18 civilians from a helicopter in Iraq.

Here's Stella Assange's address to the world's media :rose: :sun:

After 5 years incarceration and a more or less non-stop 72 hours journeying it is understandably way way way too soon for Julian to be making any public statements at this time. He needs to recover and recuperate (of course :flower: ) and will speak when he feels he is ready to, at a time of his own choosing:

I reckon this must be an unpopular opinion, but, the fact he was just pretty much released like this, with the amount of mainstream and social media coverage, the deep state republicans so fondly against it (like pence)... I don't know, but it does stink. You just don't win a legal battle (like the story goes) against those who created the legal system. This was an intentional "release" be it for election credit, for further things to happen, for more info to be released in their interest... It looks obvious to me that it has a purpose, and an important one.

I don't believe this was just a good thing to happen, specially not under those circumstances. Even if the former "Julian Assange" person still exists at this point.

Cynicism of Biden Releasing Assange for Political Advantage on Full Display

Human rights activists and investigative journalists reflected on the twist of the WikiLeaks founder's fate.

"I was very pleased and happy to learn that Julian Assange will be free after more than a decade of imprisonment in the UK, both the years when he was forced to find safety in the Ecuadorian Embassy and then in the harsh conditions of Belmarsh prison," Lucy Komisar, investigative journalist based in New York, told Sputnik.
"I think Assange is being released now by Joe Biden in the hopes it might improve his standing with progressives and win him a few more votes," Komisar continued. “People concerned about Assange will understand the cynicism of Biden keeping him locked up until he thought he might get some advantage by releasing him."

President Joe Biden has seen his approval numbers plummeting with his progressive base, who have grown disenchanted with the US president over Washington's support to Israel in the Gaza war.
According to RealClearPolitics, 61.3 percent of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of the Israel-Palestinian conflict, while 59.5 percent disapprove of his foreign strategy in general.
International observers believe a potential Israel-Hezbollah war could further lessen the US incumbent president's re-election chances.

"I don't think Joe Biden wanted Julian to arrive in the middle of an election campaign," Craig Murray, former British diplomat, who personally knows Assange, told Sputnik. "To be seen to be attacking freedom of speech, to be attacking constitutional rights is not a good look for the United States president whose election campaign is already in a lot of trouble over his support for genocide in Gaza."

Assange has suffered enough after spending five years in a UK maximum security prison for publishing honest information in the public interest argued Taylor Hudak, independent investigative journalist, adding that former President Donald Trump could pardon the WikiLeaks founder at the end of his tenure, but opted not too despite numerous pleas.

"This moment was made possible by the journalists fairly covering the case, the activists who relentlessly advocated for his release, the campaigners behind the scenes and his legal team," Hudak told Sputnik.

The investigative journalist insisted that "the prosecution should have never happened in the first place."

"Mr Assange should have never spent one day in jail for the so-called crime of journalism. WikiLeaks has never published a false document. It is unfortunate that Mr Assange had to plead guilty to any charge," Hudak concluded.

Bitcoin Donor Pays For Julian Assange's $520,000 Charter Jet

BY TYLER DURDEN
WEDNESDAY, JUN 26, 2024 - 11:45 AM
In an anonymous effort to help secure Julian Assange's freedom, an anonymous Bitcoiner donated over 8 Bitcoin, worth around $500,000, to help Assange’s family pay off the debt incurred by his charter jet and settlement expenses, CoinTelegraph (https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoiner-donates-500k-assange-freedom)reported.

On June 24, Assange was released from the high-security Belmarsh prison in the United Kingdom after reaching a plea agreement with U.S. authorities. Shortly after his release, he departed the U.K. on a private plane from a London airport to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. territory.

Assange appeared in a district court in Saipan on June 26, where he pleaded guilty to one charge of breaching the U.S. Espionage Act by leaking classified documents. The journey was planned to prevent Assange from touching foot on American soil.

Yes, no doubt it was done for political advantage. I do not usually comment much on US politics (because it is loaded with land mines and polarization, and I do not like to upset people I like over politics) - but I will say this - Trump had a golden opportunity to pardon Assange as he was leaving office - and he did not.

He chose instead to pardon some of his son-in-laws' buddies and family. For me personally that was a HUGE black mark against Trump. HUGE. Because if it was not for Assange and the Wikileaks about the dirt on the Democrats and Hilary Clinton, I am fairly certain Trump would not have won in 2016. Julian Assange and the leaked data was PIVOTAL in my view to Trump winning in 2016 - and he chose to repay that by not pardoning him when he had the opportunity. Now he never will.

In the end, no matter how it came about - we are all happy Julian is free from that intangible torture he was put through for so long - that is really the best news - rare Happy News these days.

Remember the unsolved murder of Seth Rich soon after the DNC leak… to Wikileaks!
So that’s why the USA deep state persecuted Assange all these years.

By Mario Nawfal on X:
“BREAKING: ALL EMAILS RELATED TO THE DNC LEAK HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM WIKILEAKS
Following Julian Assange's guilty plea to unlawfully obtaining and disclosing classified documents related to national defense, WikiLeaks has removed all DNC emails from its platform; all emails appear with an Internal Server Error Message.
As part of the plea deal, Assange must ensure the return or destruction of unpublished information held by him or WikiLeaks and provide a sworn affidavit confirming compliance, effectively limiting his legal exposure and potentially curtailing future leaks.”

Joe Rogan exposes the mysterious murder of Seth Rich and its ties to the DNC
https://x.com/RealAlexJones/status/1805728625016061991

My question to you all: is it likely that these emails have been saved somewhere on somebody's hard drive? Weren't these emails made publicly available by Wikileaks years ago?

Another thought: For his own safety, Julian Assange should probably not stay in any of the '5 Eyes' countries, they're spies for the deep state.

I've actually spent a little time on and off over the course of this evening, and earlier in the day, giving some reasonable consideration to your most extraordinary post here. And it really is most extraordinary.

Sometimes GOOD THINGS ACTUALLY HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE. It's so very easy to slip into a state of cynicism, despair, and mistrust, and perhaps it's lurking around every Lynchian corner. It's also the Achilles heel of many a sub room-temperature thoughtless sub-wit that occupies the (so-called) independent media space. There are way too many of them that have become the monster they purport to fight, and are witting participants in the discordant cacophony of perpetual doom and gloom.

**** that.

This IS a good thing. It's an unexpected bright light of hope that something and someone committed to something that is truer doesn't go down; actually prevails. It's hope; it's light dammit.

Now all we are now predictably and infuriatingly going to be exposed to are those very mid-wits creating conspiracies, where there are none. The lame brain so-called independent media dim-to-no-wits suggesting that all this is part of a conspiracy.

No. It isn't.

If you can't FEEL that, and understand it I don't know what else to suggest :flower:

Enough with the cynicism.

Sometimes the good guys do get a win :rose:

The guy's been incarcerated in (near) solitary for 5 years. He needs to recuperate. LEAVE HIM THE HELL ALONE. He really won't want to speak with you (Tucker, and the t.e.a.m)

Not aimed at you, obviously, but the bloody predictable 'story' angle; the vanity and narcissism of some journalists. Julian of course would be more polite than I am inclined in the moment.

For what it's worth, and maybe not very much (and so what - I'm cool with that :) ), Tucker's stock went down in my market with his slodge brained porridge mush induced 'feedback' from his interview with Vladimir Putin back in January.

LEAVE JULIAN ALONE YOU OPPORTUNISTIC ****ER.

STOP IT, ALL OF YOU, NOW. :rose:

I'm so incredibly cross with all this nonsense.

It's Julian's birthday on July 3rd. Wish him a happy birthday maybe, then, if you actually care. Give a damn about his contribution to a truthful cause which is way and above anything any one of us here has done.

Sod timing. I imagine a cabbage with an IQ of 40 could probably draw a convenience with an election and brownie points (yawn yawn).

IT DOESN'T MATTER. He's out of the potential hell he may have been subjected to in Virginia; he's alive.

SOMETIMES GOOD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE :rose:

I begin to wonder whether some commentators actually wished for his suffering to continue, actually, just to satisfy their own selfish arrogant narcissistic smarter-than-thou knowledge and peculiar 'reason to live crusader type focus' for justification and to apply some meaning for their own existence. Not aimed at you but it's THAT attitude that certainly prevails way too often in the 'independent media'.

It's a WIN.

The whole take-away from this from having followed this so closely and it being reiterated in recent interviews or statements made by Kristin, Jen, Stella: the PRECEDENT that this political persecution sets. That, what happened to Julian could happen to any one of us who makes sensitive information publicly widely available in the public interest, through extrajudicial fiat.

THAT is the point.

In the meantime could we please be glad for him and his family that now he has something resembling a life to look forward to. That would be respectful, and caring. And humane.

Something that Julian would understand :rose:

Why now?
I can't remember which of many reports I heard this on, but as best I understand Assange's legal team had been working to negotiate exactly this outcome for the past several months. It's not as if someone in the US State Department, twirling their evil mustache, woke up one morning last week and suddenly decided to release him with this plea bargain, all part of some diabolical scheme. :) It's been in the works, behind the scenes, for a while.

The exact timing may have something to do with the US presidential debate tomorrow (a PR 'win' for Biden, so to speak, as Trump never helped Assange at all). We may learn much more about the details of the whole thing when Tucker interviews him, hopefully soon, though maybe in a few weeks' time as the poor guy has to recover substantially from his protracted inhuman ordeal.

l listened to a close friend of Assange's last night who said that Assange had three offers from the U.S. government, the first one being from Trump in exchange for releasing Hillary's emails. Assange said "No" to that offer. Then he had two more offers from the current administration and he accepted the third offer. I believe that Tucker is not in Australia due to Assange's freedom. He heard Assange was freed when he was on the plane to Perth, and not before. So, I don't believe he will interview Assange while there, but things could change.

Bless you, Tintin.... for your passionate defense of Julian, the man....

You know.....I'm thinking that his work on the World Stage may be over now - mission completed... (in the political form, anyway) God only knows he has done enough - more than one man could be expected to contribute under normal circumstances.. it's a miracle he's still alive - and another miracle that he and Stella found love when he was in the embassy and miraculously had their children...

I want him to enjoy some nice long soaks in the bath - enjoy the love of Stella and play with their children - listen to the birds, go for peaceful walks - experience simple non demanding things -

I could go on - but you get the picture....

Stella has already said that he needs time.... and a bucket of Rescue Remedy

Well she didn't say the Bucket of Rescue Remedy thing :) that was me - but a couple of drops twice a day, every day for the next year could help....

https://english.almayadeen.net/news/politics/with-assange-banned--wife-urges-others-to-dig-out-info-from

With Assange banned, wife urges others to dig out info from US gov.

Australian journalists are being asked by WikiLeaks founder and journalist Julian Assange's wife, Stella, to file freedom of information (FOI) requests with the US government to obtain details on its criminal case against him – as his plea deal prohibits him from doing so.

In a statement released on Julian Assange's first full day back in Australia, his wife and legal team thanked legislators, the prime minister, and supporters locally and globally whose 14-year effort led to his release.

She said, “If Julian pleaded guilty in federal court in Saipan, it’s because he was pleading guilty to committing journalism,” adding, “This case criminalizes journalism – journalistic activity, standard journalistic activity of news gathering, and publishing. And so this is the reality of this prosecution. It’s the case should never have been brought. But the important thing is that Julian is free … And we can put this behind us.”

She announced on Wednesday that her husband would make a public appearance after recovering from years in prison and court struggles against extradition to the United States.

Speaking to journalists at a news conference in Parliament House on Thursday, Stella Assange said, “Julian isn’t allowed to request freedom of information, make information requests from the US government."

“But you can and I encourage you to … so please do," she stressed.

A requirement as part of the plea deal is that WikiLeaks remove any unpublished material on the US that they or their affiliates held. According to Assange's US attorney Barry Pollack, WikiLeaks' published material was over ten years old, and he was unsure whether they still had unpublished records but noted that Assange fulfilled his obligations.

“In fact, the United States in court in Saipan yesterday conceded – and the judge found – that there is no evidence that any harm has befallen any individual anywhere in the world as a result of Mr Assange’s publications,” Pollack said, noting, “That being said, they did insist that he issue an instruction to the editor of WikiLeaks to destroy any materials they might have that were not published and Julian has complied with that provision.”

FM says ties with US 'damaged' now

Stella Assange expressed her husband being "overjoyed and so grateful" to the Australian people, as well as to all political parties who supported his release, including the government.

“… I think the whole world celebrated with us. It was us meeting on the tarmac but it was the entire world who was celebrating.”

However, on Thursday, Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham accused PM Anthony Albanese of improperly calling Assange on his arrival and found it a problem with Albanese comparing the return of whom he called political prisoners with the negotiated plea agreement for Assange.

Birmingham told ABC Radio National on Thursday morning, “The idea that that Julian Assange should be held up and treated and feted in the same type of way as Australians who genuinely been held as political prisoners, who have genuinely been arbitrarily detained by regimes that don’t offer that type of transparency – there is absolutely no comparison between the two."

“This wasn’t an act of heroism,” he continued. “It was simply an act of somebody who was happy to take any and all information given to him and publish it. That’s not what you do on the ABC and it’s not what any other responsible journalist would do.”

Birmingham claimed the US Congress would "think very poorly" of Albanese for having welcomed Assange and that his public support harmed Australia's relationship with the US, but Penny Wong, the foreign minister, disagreed.

Wong said in response, “He would know that our relationship with the United States is deep and strong and that is why we were able to advocate in the way we did.”

'Cartwheels' in Canberra

Julian Assange’s longest-serving lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, condemned Birmingham for his statements.

“It is entirely appropriate for the Australian prime minister to call an Australian citizen who has been through what Julian’s been through and had just touched down in Australia,” Robinson told journalists.

“To suggest that looking after an Australian citizen … who has been through so much could damage our alliance is, I think, wrong," she said, stating that Birmingham “needs to get his priorities straight."

This comes after a US court sentenced Assange to time served and no supervised release after he pleaded guilty to one of the US espionage counts as part of a plea agreement with US prosecutors. According to Flightradar, the jet with Assange on board arrived in Canberra at 09:37 GMT.

John Shipton, Assange's father, said on Wednesday that he was "doing cartwheels" following his son's release from the British Belmarsh Prison.

Assange had been imprisoned in the high-security Belmarsh Prison in London since April 2019 after British police were allowed to raid the Ecuadorian Embassy where he had sought asylum in 2012.

The United States sought to put Assange on trial for publishing US military secrets and evidence of war crimes in the American wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is accused of publishing some 700,000 confidential documents relating to US military and diplomatic activities.

On Tuesday, newly filed court papers indicated that Julian Assange entered into a plea deal with the United States government.

In early June, a YouGov and ABC News poll indicated that 70% of Australians believe Assange should have all charges against him dropped.

This is a spiritual war and Assange is/was a captured pawn in that war (or Knight, or Bishop). The amount of pressure levied against him, and downright threats to his life, from -- let's call them -- the Deep State, gives me pause that he was released at all. No doubt his team have indeed put in a lot of hard work to secure this plea deal, but I would never have predicted they across the pond would budge on extradition and a drumhead (https://www.thefreedictionary.com/Drumhead+trial) trial at the end of it -- or even come to the table.

Good things do happen to good people, but when the facilitators of "good things" are the US Justice Department, starkly contradicting their previously (and dogmatically) held position, I can't help but go to a place in my mind (I'm simply wired that way) that says there's an angle to this chess-move that's invisible, behind the scenes, and you'll perhaps never know what it is.

Forgive my nutjob brain, but I've often wondered if Assange had a dead man's switch, sitting, hovering, over a mass-release of seriously damaging data -- a bargaining chip if you will, the only thing keeping him alive. And maybe he's finally given that up for his freedom, who would blame him? That's a far-fetched scenario perhaps (and this is reality, not a John Grisham novel, or Robert Ludlum), and I've no evidence at all to back it up.

Again, sorry for the conspiratorial gobsh**e Tintin, my most very excellent friend! I just have a hard-time believing any deal would be struck unless there was something in it for both sides. Maybe, as some suggest, election points for Biden is all that it is...but, we're talking swamp critters here, sitting on the other side of that table, who are not exactly known for their extraordinary acts of benevolence, or this: a huge one-eighty degree manoeuvre.

sorry for the conspiratorial gobsh**e

"Gob****e": Ha, no problem at all my friend, and that made me laugh actually :) :flower:

Part of my obvious irritation yesterday - and I really do get why folks are questioning this happening now - well, part of that irritation was that it all seemed to soil the moment. The guy is FREE now, not dead as well, thank goodness. I'd rather it happened now than never at all. When would have been the time to do it? (10 years ago really, but, you know what I mean.). All manner of silly ideas will be proposed with a huge dose of high-octane speculation in the weeks to come.

Was he released as a kind of early birthday gift? Was he released as a consequence of planetary alignments? Is this a Deus ex machina moment? Is it as a result of me writing 'Free Julian Assange' across my (spoiled) ballot paper back in 2019 and that I had some kind of premonition?

It could be timed now for ALL manner of incredible and not so incredible reasons. Like yourself though I really don't know.

Much of what you've shared there has of course crossed my mind especially the dead-mans switch scenario (the most likely), and yet it all actually just doesn't really seem to matter right now. It will be something I'll get to pondering and tackling in time but right now I just want to celebrate the fact he's out and that's testament to the extraordinary efforts of his legal team. In fact the next appeal hearing date was planned I think for about two weeks time but now that doesn't matter any more, forever.

For me what would be interesting is to see what Julian does next :flower:

For me, Assange becoming free again feels like a close relative of mine was just released from jail. Many of us were carrying around a stress all these years that just wouldn't go away, and there was almost nothing we could do about it. So, in celebration I have been eating forbidden sweets in the past two days, indulging in whipped cream on my matcha morning wake up drink, as an example.

Another piece of good news is that his private jet flight that cost $500,000 was completely paid off by one bitcoin that somebody donated!

I agree. There was a reason Julian was released - everyone has been asking why now?

I just tuned in to the Presidential debate between Trump and Biden, and the most plausible possibility that struck me after viewing that was this:

Biden was obviously hopelessly incompetent in the debate, and it was seen all over the world. Trump came across as sharp, solutions orientated, reasonable and clear headed.

What if - they were planning to dump Biden and put in Hilary instead? THAT would explain why the sudden release of Julian, why part of the deal was to wipe all the dirt on HER from their servers (nothing else), because it was that very dirt that cost her the 2016 election. They don't care if people know about it or not, they only care to wipe the EVIDENCE.

And what if Julian agreed to that, because Trump sure as heck did not act to get Julian out of that fix when he should have. That in my view was the gravest error of Trump's career. And who could blame Julian for taking that deal, the torture he was under? Because there was no guarantee Trump would pardon him if he returns to office.

Pardon my non American speculations, but this affects the whole world, what happens in America, so we cannot help but be interested.

And if I am right and they replace Biden with Hilary, I know she is still hugely popular, especially among women, that might well shift the odds.

Time will tell very soon if I am right or not, but I too, have been pondering the "Why now?" on Julian's release, as joyful as I am it happened, the reasons for it are still a matter of curiosity.

Mark, you are right, it was not done out of benevolence - it was done for a strategic reason. Look at what happened to Gonzalo Lira - no action was taken to help him because he had no strategic value to them. It is just the way this realm works, unfortunately.

Yes agreed - like I said, pure speculation on my part at this stage, and time will reveal where this is all going. But after that debate, which was a disaster for Biden - he was so obviously hung out to dry there, that that was my first thought given the timing of these peak events.

Julian Assange has been released from prison and returned to his native Australia, a fact anyone who cares about press freedom should cheer. And while left-leaning commentators like Cenk Uygur and Krystal Ball are joining in the applause at Assange’s release, back when the U.S. government was pursuing criminal charges against the Wikileaks founder, Uygur and Ball felt no compunction about smearing and laughing at Julian Assange and his predicament.

US uses national security 'as a veil to hide war crimes' - Assange's lawyer

RT
Thu, 27 Jun 2024

https://www.sott.net/image/s35/709557/super/667dbb6920302758ba15a27c.jpg

The journalist's persecution was revenge for publishing embarrassing information, Aitor Martinez says

The Julian Assange saga has clearly shown that the US has been using its "national security" as a "veil" to hide war crimes, one of the WikiLeaks founder's attorneys, Aitor Martinez, has said.

The years-long persecution of the publisher and the extradition case have also set a very dangerous precedent, which threatens the whole concept of press freedom, the lawyer added.

At the same time, the Assange case had become growingly toxic for the US administration, sprouting numerous groups advocating his release and effectively turning into a global movement, Martinez suggested.

"The truth is that the US administration had been pushing for the extradition process until recently, and indeed, just a few weeks ago, they had even provided diplomatic assurances seeking the effective handover of Julian Assange. However, in recent times, a citizen movement has emerged against this extradition, and I believe there is no corner of the world where a 'Free Assange' movement has not sprung up," the lawyer stated.

The timing of the abrupt resolution of the years-long affair is likely linked to the looming US presidential elections and the ongoing campaign, where it was bound to emerge one way or another. The case "in some way tarnished the image of the United States before the world" given it "meant the political persecution of a journalist who simply published truthful information that evidenced the commission of serious war crimes," Martinez noted.

"Therefore, unquestionably, the Assange case would have arisen in the framework of the presidential debates, and this was the only way to end a case that undeniably did not play in favor of the image of the US in the world," he said.

While politicians in Washington have ultimately opted to wrap up the affair, the US intelligence community has regarded it as a personal vendetta of sorts against the journalist, Martinez claimed.

"This case was being radically pushed by the US intelligence establishment and mainly by the CIA as a form of revenge against Julian Assange for the material he had published, which in some way had revealed the shame of the US military in operations abroad," he said.

A month ago, on May 25, 2024, Tim Pool released his interview with Donald Trump, in which Trump said he would consider pardoning Julian Assange if re-elected.

So, given the then upcoming June Trump-Biden debate, which likely some insiders already knew would be some sort of take down of Biden, perhaps the Clintonista's figured they'd better get what they could out of their Assange chess piece, while they were sure they could.

Moreover, some officials appointed under President Biden were never entirely comfortable with the Trump administration’s decision to charge Mr. Assange with activities that skirted the line between espionage and legitimate disclosures made in the public interest, current and former officials said.”

It looks obvious to me that it has a purpose, and an important one.
Hillary (or the evil gang still operating in her name) got some Wikileaks data on her scrubbed from Wikileaks ... if I've got this right, the data that Seth Rich paid for with his life.

I figure she (or they) got what mattered to them most, while they still could. Trump told Tim Pool (in a published interview) a month ago that he would take a serious look at pardoning Assange (and prosecuting Fauci).

The Bush/Clinton/Rockefeller/... crime syndicate is going down, as evidenced by CNN abandoning the ship and turning on Biden after his "debate" with Trump. Trump is on a path to regain the public office of the President, with enough new faces in Congress swept in with him to initiate some serious house cleaning.

I'd guess that what Seth got to Wikileaks could open the door for investigating and prosecuting a variety of crimes punishable by life in prison or by hanging for treason.

Julian Assange has finally been freed after over a decade of persecution by the US government for exposing its war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan. Following a plea deal with the US Department of Justice, the WikiLeaks founder was freed from the super-max Belmarsh Prison on Monday, where he was held for over five years battling impending extradition to the US.

Kevin Gosztola, the curator of TheDissenter.org newsletter & author of Guilty of Journalism: The Political Case Against Julian Assange, discusses the global movement to free Assange and why his release is a “major defeat” for the CIA, FBI and Justice Department.

"Now that one of the key people behind all this has just been elected prime minister, it’s even less likely that we’ll ever learn the truth. Indeed, one cannot help but wonder if releasing Assange just before the election wasn’t a way — for Starmer and everyone else involved — to make this story go away once and for all." - Thomas Fazi, July 5th, 2024

-------------

Much speculation over why Assange's release right now, but it really had occurred to me that there must be a link to this UK election, and Starmer, being so closely linked to his persecution and that their UK man, Starmer, being most likely propelled to the helm of Government.

This Substack post by Thomas Fazi provides some background.

-------------

Starmer's role in Assange's persecution
Source: https://www.thomasfazi.com/p/starmers-role-in-assanges-persecution

As head of the UK Crown Prosecution Service, the newly elected British PM Keir Starmer played a key role in setting in motion the infernal legal machinery that crushed Assange for 14 years

Even though Julian Assange was finally freed last month, after a 14-year-long ordeal, many myths still endure about the whole affair. One of these is that the case concerning Assange’s alleged rape of two girls in Sweden, in 2010, never went to trial because Assange evaded justice. In reality, Assange, who was then in the UK, made himself available for questioning via several means, by telephone or video conference, or in person in the Australian embassy. But the Swedish authorities insisted on questioning him in Sweden. Assange’s legal team countered that extradition of a suspect simply to question him — not to send him to trial, as he had not been charged — was a disproportionate measure.

This was more than a technicality: Assange feared that if he were extradited to Sweden, the latter’s authorities would extradite him to the US, where he had good reason to believe that he wouldn’t be given a fair trial. Sweden, after all, always refused to provide Assange a guarantee of non-extradition to the US — the reason why, when in 2012 the British Supreme Court ruled that he should be extradited to Sweden, Assange sought political asylum in the Ecuadorian embassy. From there, however, he continued to make known his availability to be interrogated by the Swedish authorities inside the embassy, but they never replied.

Thanks to a FOIA investigation by the Italian journalist Stefania Maurizi, it would later emerge that a crucial role in getting Sweden to pursue this highly unusual line of conduct was played by the UK Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), the principal public agency for conducting criminal prosecutions, then led by one Keir Starmer. In early 2011, while Assange was still under house arrest, Paul Close, a British lawyer with the CPS, gave his Swedish counterparts his opinion on the case, apparently not for the first time. “My earlier advice remains, that in my view it would not be prudent for the Swedish authorities to try to interview the defendant in the UK”, Close wrote. Why did the Crown Prosecution Service advise the Swedes against the only legal strategy that could have brought the case to a rapid resolution, namely questioning Julian Assange in London, rather than insisting on his extradition?

In hindsight, it seems clear that the CPS’s aim was precisely that of keeping the case in a legal limbo, and Assange trapped in Britain, for as long as possible, especially considering how shaky the case against Assange was in the first place. After all, what better outcome for Assange’s enemies than keeping him under investigation for years, suspected of being a rapist but never either charged or cleared once and for all, thus justifying his arbitrary detention? The CPS’s hostile treatment of Assange, the citizen of an allied country, continued even after he sought refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy, for example by insisting on denying him “safe passage” in UK territory in order to be treated in a hospital for a shoulder problem.

A year after Assange had taken refuge in the embassy, it appears that the Swedish prosecutor was considering dropping the extradition proceedings, but she was deterred from doing so by the CPS. The prosecutor was concerned, among other things, about the mounting costs of costs of the Scotland Yard agents guarding the embassy day and night. But for the British authorities this was not a problem; they replied that they “do not consider costs are a relevant factor in this matter”.

As a result of the Swedish authorities’ highly unusual behaviour, Assange had, by then, been arbitrarily and illegitimately forced into detention for seven years, as was concluded even by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

What role, if any, did Keir Starmer play in all this as head of the CPS? During the period when the body was overseeing Assange’s extradition to Sweden, Starmer made several trips to Washington. US records show Starmer met with Attorney General Eric Holder and a host of American and British national security officials. Using the Freedom of Information Act, the British media organisation Declassified UK requested the itinerary for each of Starmer’s four trips to Washington with details of his official meetings, including any briefing notes. CPS replied that all the documents relative to Starmer’s trips to Washington had been destroyed. Asked for clarification — and whether the destruction of documents was routine — the CPS did not respond.

Similarly, when Maurizi submitted a FOIA request to the CPS to shed light on the correspondence between Paul Close and the Swedish authorities, she was also told that all the data associated with Paul Close’s account had been deleted when he retired and could not be recovered. This only beckoned more questions: why did the CPS destroy key documents on a high-profile, ongoing case? And what did the CPS destroy exactly, and on whose instructions? The CPS added that Close’s email account had been deleted “in accordance with standard procedure”. However, Maurizi would later discover that this procedure was by no means standard. The destruction of key emails was distinctly suspicious.

Since then, Maurizi has been waging a years-long legal fight to access documents related to the CPS and Assange case, but she has been systematically stonewalled by CPS — even despite a judge order ordering the CPS to come clean about the destruction of key documents on Assange. One cannot help but wonder: what are they trying to hide? It’s hard to shake the conclusion that the real purpose of the Swedish investigation, and of CPS’s unusual behaviour, was simply to keep Assange detained for as long as necessary to get him extradited to the US.

Now that one of the key people behind all this has just been elected prime minister, it’s even less likely that we’ll ever learn the truth. Indeed, one cannot help but wonder if releasing Assange just before the election wasn’t a way — for Starmer and everyone else involved — to make this story go away once and for all.

According to a leaked diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?101183-Current-Wikileaks-and-Assange-News-Releases), Israeli 🇮🇱 Defense Intelligence Chief Amos Yadlin explicitly said in 2007 that "Israel would be happy if Hamas took over Gaza (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?122055-Israel-vs-Palestine-a-New-Middle-East-War) because the IDF could then deal with Gaza as a hostile state." So why has Israel been handing Hamas suitcases with hundreds of millions in cash — while calling them "enemies of civilization" and "bloodthirsty barbarians"?
