She was still eating sweets and drinking cheap red wine until her death in 1997, and had only quit smoking a year prior, claiming that it was her reliance on all of the above that kept her around so long.

Just goes to show that everyone is capable of adapting and surviving.
Maybe that is why the medical establishment flip-flops so often with such statements as "cholesterol is bad, no wait, it's good"..."coffee is good, no wait, it's bad"...you get the idea.
It is the responsibility (if one feels so inclined) of each individual on a case-by-case basis to determine what works best for them.

Well that cheered me up and gives me hope.
Cheap red wine, chocolate and olive oil - yum !!
If only we could do something about air quality - I'd like to know more about were she lived.

I found it amusing to learn that Jeanne Calment only quit smoking at the age of 117, although no more than two Dunhills per day, because failing eyesight meant she couldn't see her lighter properly!

I found the whole article amusing because it flies in the face of.... I'm sure genetics had a play in it. I would love to have met and known her.

There is something missing in this article and conversation. We tend to idealize quantity (years) over quality. That's because we are probably using that article to justify our attachments. The goal of a healthy nutrition is not to live long, that's just a usual consequence. But to have a quality life. By quality, I mean that eating healthy makes you much stronger energetically, more receptive, more conscious and definitely helps the planet in a million ways (environmentally, financially, morally etc.) and you stop being a pawn of what the whole system feeds you to keep you passive. Plus you set a leading example for your family and society and improve your own DNA. All that may sound like a buzz kill for your humour guys, but we are at at time where we have to step it up.

Generally I believe people should stay away from processed food packed with preservatives, but there's quite a wide range of diets that people can adapt or thrive on based on their constitution. Diet is part of health, but there's many other factors.
Red wine definitely has benefits. While the cigarettes weren't good of course, they probably also played a role in keeping her stress level down.

Olive oil! Sounds good.
She may have had a good heart and a lot of energy (I was going to say "spunk" but my UK friend told me that has another meaning!)
Good heart as in loving, and good heart as in healthy. I'm sure the red wine helped!
Guessing that she didn't have fears about food, or say to herself "this is bad for me" as the body responds to fears and mental conditioning.
She must have been a real character! :hat:
