View Full Version : Name Three Good Things About Yourself
Valerie Villars
15th June 2018, 12:27
I was listening to public radio yesterday and the host was talking about how people have been conditioned not to think well of themselves. Most will readily name all the faults they have, but have to be coerced into naming any good qualities they have. So, the exercise was; Name three things good about yourself.
Please do. I think it would be a worthy exercise in acknowledging positive things about ourselves without feeling like we are bragging.
Just name them with no justification or explanation. I think it would be interesting to read and very cathartic.

I rescue all living things if I can, whether large or extremely tiny.

I take very good care of myself physically. I feel I owe that to a lot of people out there.

I think I'm okay. I'm beginning to like myself a little more as I get older..
- I'm very patient (might be my best quality)
- I do actually listen to people now. I'm pretty good at it. It's a skill I'm proud of. I wasn't always like that.
- I'm pretty good while under pressure.

This reminds me about a great story I read many years ago. It goes like this:
The Good List - Author Unknown
One day a teacher asked her students to list the names of the other students in the room on two sheets of paper, leaving a space between each name.
Then she told them to think of the nicest thing they could say about Each of their classmates and write it down. It took the remainder of the class period to finish the assignment, and as the students left the room, each one handed in the papers.
That Saturday, the teacher wrote down the name of each student on a separate sheet of paper, and listed what everyone else had said about that individual.
On Monday, she gave each student his or her list. Before long, the entire class was smiling. "Really?" she heard whispered. "I never knew that I meant anything to anyone!" and, "I didn't know others liked me so much," were most of the comments.
No one ever mentioned those papers in class again. She never knew if they discussed them after class or with their parents, but it didn't matter. The exercise had accomplished its purpose. The students were happy with themselves and one another. That group of students moved on ...
Several years later, one of the students was killed in Viet Nam and his teacher attended the funeral of that special student. She had never seen a serviceman in a military coffin before. He looked so handsome, so mature.
The church was packed with his friends. One by one, those who loved him took a last walk by the coffin. The teacher was the last one to bless the coffin. As she stood there, one of the soldiers who acted as pallbearer came up to her. "Were you Mark's math teacher?" he asked. She nodded: "yes." Then he said: "Mark talked about you a lot."
After the funeral, most of Mark's former classmates went together to a luncheon. Mark's mother and father were there, obviously waiting to speak with his teacher.
"We want to show you something," his father said, taking a wallet out Of his pocket "They found this on Mark when he was killed. We thought you might recognize it."
Opening the billfold, he carefully removed two worn pieces of Notebook paper that had obviously been taped, folded and refolded many times. The teacher knew without looking that the papers were the ones on which she had listed all the good things each of Mark's classmates had said about him.
“Thank you so much for doing that," Mark's mother said. "As you can see, Mark treasured it."
All of Mark's former classmates started to gather around. Charlie smiled rather sheepishly and said, "I still have my list. It's in the top drawer of my desk at home."
Chuck's wife said, "Chuck asked me to put his in our wedding album."
"I have mine too," Marilyn said. "It's in my diary"
Then Vicki, another classmate, reached into her pocketbook, took out Her wallet and showed her worn and frazzled list to the group. "I carry this with me at all times," Vicki said and without batting an eyelash, she continued: "I think we all saved our lists"
That's when the teacher finally sat down and cried. She cried for Mark and for all his friends who would never see him again.
The density of people in society is so thick that we forget that life will end one day. And we don't know when that one day will be.
So please, tell the people you love and care for, that they are special and important. Tell them, before it is too late.

Devplan, what a beautiful story. I remember being stunned when the man I love told me that a letter I had written him many years and many relationships ago, had been the nicest letter he had ever gotten. It was about why I loved him and it profoundly had a major impact on his life. He still has that letter. He saved it all these years.
To be more precise (as I just remembered) he said it was the most beautiful letter he had ever received.

3 positive qualities from Ignatius J Reilly:
1) "Employers sense in me a denial of their values.' He rolled over onto his back. 'They fear me. I suspect that they can see that I am forced to function in a century I loathe. This was true even when I worked for the New Orleans Public Library.”
2) “I avoid that bleak first hour of the working day during which my still sluggish senses and body make every chore a penance. I find that in arriving later, the work which I do perform is of a much higher quality.”
3) “I recommend Batman especially, for he tends to transcend the abysmal society in which he's found himself. His morality is rather rigid, also. I rather respect Batman.”

@Daozan I just reread "Managing Ignatius" which I ordered right after I made my offer to you and received yesterday. It's a great book and a very, very accurate depiction of the insanity of the Quarter back in the day. The insanity's still there, just the wild west aspect has taken a turn toward way too weird for weirdness sake instead of weird because people are being genuine kind of a thing.
I had loaned my copy to an ex restaurant manager who never returned it. Damn, I have a thing about books. They are on loan. Please return.
Anyway, the offer still stands. It's an outstanding read.

Did you know that public defenders in Louisiana, though mandated by federal law, are not considered government employees and therefore are not subject to having any government "perks" or even a 401K?
I just found this out this evening from a good friend, whose husband is a public defender.
However, anyone working for the District Attorney's office IS considered a government employee.
In other words, those who prosecute for the government get governmental perks and protection, but those who defend the poor and indigent, do not.

Dismaying but why should that surprise you Val? Just goes to show you that "the people," especially the poor, are deemed outside the circle, and those that defend them only a notch or two above them. Remember the West Memphis 3 ? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/West_Memphis_Three
I just watched the Paradise Lost trilogy https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paradise_Lost:_The_Child_Murders_at_Robin_Hood_Hills What a heartbreaker that story was, though it did have a bitter-sweet ending. Eighteen years in prison with no evidence against them. Oh, they listened to Metallica. And wore black. And were trailer park kids from broken families. Jason Baldwin, the younger of that trio, was quite an amazing young man, as I learned. And he is now helping those in similar situations to himself -- http://proclaimjustice.org/about-us/ Very inspiring.

Hello Valerie. Just saw this old thread.
This will sound so old school. ( the first one )
1. I am a good mother. My children are growned up, but I really think one of my purpouse in life was to be a good mother, loving them and guiding them until they could go their own way and be good human beings. Now, from aside I continue nurturing them when needed

1. I care. I just want everyone to be happy, to live in a world of peace, harmony, truth and abundance. I want this with all my heart.
2. I know. i know that the global transformation will happen, because I am here.
3. I believe. I believe in everyone. I know that I won't be able to help them all, but I do know that eventually they will all make it back Home.
Thanks, Valerie.
