Hi mojo.

I have used ClipGrab (https://clipgrab.org/) for years now. It works really well so I have not even considered using anything else. It's a free downloader and converter for YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and many other online video sites. It converts downloaded videos to MPEG4, MP3 or other formats. It's really easy to use too!

Here is the link:

I find VLC the best software to do what you desire Mojo, It can even convert to multiple formats.

When you are on the page of the youtube video you'd like to DL, edit the URL to add "gen" in front of "youtube", hit enter, you can download from there. You can also browse the 'genyoutube" site itself for youtube videos, so you can just stay in that one site if you want.

I don't DL many YT videos but this has been the simplest method for me.

https://www.genyoutube.net/

... it looks like there is add-ons for browsers as well available here.

If you can afford a few bucks (approx US$25), I use Internet Download Manager. You get a lifetime license & regular free upgrades. It integrates seamlessly with Mac/Windows PC Browsers (ie Chrome, FireFox, Internet Explorer etc).

The added bonus is that it will allow you to download multiple sizes and formats (if available), and it's VERY fast; it will also download different sources, ie Vimeo *cough* 123Movies & some other streaming sites.

You can try it out FREE for a limited time (30 days).

If you're after a Free Downloader, I'm with Star Tsar for VLC in as much as it provides so many other useful features as a video/audio player & compatible with different OS' ie Windows, Mac, Ubuntu (it's my favourite)! :)

I'm a Linux user, so 4k video downloader is what I use, but I use the youtubetomp3 version since I only want the mp3 for my player. It also works for PC and Mac. It's free but I registered mine for a small amount of money since I don't like being a freeloader.

Welcome to Linux!
I suppose by xdm you mean the Xtreme Download Manager (http://sourcedigit.com/19622-install-xtreme-download-manager-xdm-on-ubuntu-16-04/), not the X11 Display Manager (https://www.x.org/releases/X11R7.6/doc/man/man1/xdm.1.xhtml) :).

Yes mine was slow but I did upgrade it so now it downloads vids fast, no adds.

Very easy to use as well:
Simply right click the vid or copy past the URL in to the down loaders re-sceptical, simples :)

Regarding DVDVideosoft/Free Studio, as I posted somewhere else:

[...]
Else, there is this one: https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ with the complete suite here: https://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software.htm

[Edit: Actually, the latest version of the suite (DVDVideosoft-FreeStudio_6.6.39.707) contains a bridled version of the YouTube download program which only allows videos under 3 minutes length to be downloaded... so, I retrograded back to version FreeStudio_6.6.1.119 that I had saved]

Use any instance. Enjoy youtube without adds. There's a download dropdown menu, with various quality options, audio only, subtitles, etc.
https://redirect.invidious.io/

yt-dlp is active and updated.
https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp
grab the latest release https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases
open a command line window in any OS and type "yt-dlp <youtube url>"

I use `yt-dlp` for years now, but it is command line, not suitable for many.

On Firefox I have an add-on from here: https://www.yourvideofile.org/
You can also search in mozilla marketplace it is available there.

https://images2.imgbox.com/99/0f/WI8Qcj6j_o.png
It works like charm, but MP3 options are only for paid members, for me MP4 360P is more than enough.
See, there is 2 Download buttons available, the one from the Add-on is the green one, the other one is from youtube itself.

i also use yt-dlp for youtube and a few other websites, but for websites where yt-dlp doesn‘t work i use a free firefox browser addon:
"Video DownloadHelper"

Copy video link direct from Youtube then paste into the box on the page below, very rarely have any problems and it produces various resolutions as choices.

For converting .mp4 files to .mp3, same rules on link below.

:bump:

I'm aware there are many new free online sites for this, and the best recommendations might change quite frequently. Can we update this thread with any new suggestions?

Apparently youtube have recently cracked down on downloads, so a lot of the online tools have stopped working and are scrambling to find a solution.

JDownloader (https://jdownloader.org/home/index) and Stacher (http://stacher.io) are client side, so you have to download a small bit of software, but I believe they aren't affected by the crackdown.

Failing that, if all else fails, you can always just use a screen recording tool like OBS or similar.

I use these two sites:

https://savefrom.net
https://yt1d.com

The way I download the YT videos is to click the '360p' button while also choosing 'Save Link As'. That always works for me on Firefox. If I just click the button and do nothing else, the video appears but can then be downloaded by clicking 'Save Video As'.

I've used yt-dlp for a long time, but looking over the thread, I see that the two mentioned by Ewan here (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?103296-Which-program-to-download-YouTube-videos&p=1605457&viewfull=1#post1605457) have been updated, and now also exist as desktop and mobile apps found at https://123sudo.com/. They look quite interesting.
