View Full Version : Favorite 90's Music. Fess Up

Right, let's get into it.

I walked by a woman today who smelt of subtle vanilla, more fabric softener than perfume, and not only did it remind me of a very old girlfriend, it brought me back in time..it unlocked some dusty door deep in my compartmentalized mind, and I managed to slip by the machine guns and the afghan dogs into a world that was clearly still very alive and vibrant, just temporarily forgotten: the 90's.

Never let 'em tell you time travel is impossible. Fancy tech is irrelevant - all you need is the proper scent. Or the proper song. Boom, you're there...for better or worse.

The decade will mean different things to different people, obviously, depending upon a number of factors..namely, age.

I graduated high school in 1995. I was 18.

Four years earlier I was a freshman, wearing guess jeans and rugby shirts. I got slightly grungy as time wore on, though in my defense it was short lived - I never embraced that culture. Even then I was much too wise to embrace malnutrition(that came later, when I discovered beer). As others were embracing their misery and paleness and splotchy skin conditions as badges of honor, I'd moved on. F#ck that, I wanted a tan.

Lotta good hip hop came outta the 90's. I went thru a Snoop Dogg phase - khaki pants and sweatshirts, that is. Stop laughing, I pulled it off (no I didn't)

But when I heard Oasis, all that other music faded into the background. I still like them. I think Noel Gallagher is a song writing genius. While my friends were following bands like Phish and the Grateful Dead around the country in stuffy Volkswagons reeking of Cheetos and stale farts, I was rocking out to these dudes. I liked guitar music, rock music with melody. They sounded like sort of a millennial Beatles, and looked like 'em too. They were mimicking them..but they did it shamelessly, without the typical face-saving irony a lesser band might have adopted. I was hooked.

This is a music thread, so please post your favorite songs from the 90's. But don't be afraid to also include a personal anecdote or 2 - how old you were, what you were doing, wearing..so forth. A friend of mine just sent me a few pics of me from that era; I may even post them if I'm feeling bold enough..because without evidence of my coolness, I'd just be another Corey Goode.

I've been listening to this 90's song all weekend. I simply can't stop:

The 70s and 80s were more my time:) but a lot of great music came out in the 90s. Oasis produced some mighty tunes, 'All Around the World' my favourite - though I think I'd like them more had the Gallaghers not been such obnoxious twats.

I'll slightly cheat here, by the submitting this offering from the great Genesis (they had a brief come back in the 90s and released this in 91).

See past the title - there's a very definite statement here in the lyrics (and the video)

Mike, you are hilarious. I'll bite. I was obsessed with the song below in the early nineties. I was in my early thirties and still partying my ass off. I heard Cracker was going to be at Tipitina's http:////en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipitina%27s (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipitina%27s) in New Orleans.

I was a little behind in the whole stage diving thing, but for some reason it was on my bucket list and I planned to do it while the band was singing the song.

So, as they got into the first bars of the song, I climbed up on stage, threw my arms wide and just jumped, ala Jimmy in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadrophenia

No one was more surprised than me when I was gracefully caught by some guys on the floor. So, I clambored up and did it again.

The guys in the band's mouths were open. Man that was fun. Still one of my favorite memories.

Lyrics
Sometimes I want to take you down
Sometimes I want to get you low
Brush your hair back from your eyes
Take you down let the river flow
Sometimes I go and walk the street
Behind the green sheet of glass
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
A million poppies gonna make me sleep
Just one rose and knows your name
The fruit is rusting on the vine
The fruit is calling from the trees
Hey don't you want to go down
Like some junkie cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey, hey, hey like being stoned
Blue blue is the sun
Brown brown is the sky
Green green of her eyes
A million miles a million miles
Hey hey don't you want to go down
Like some disgraced cosmonaut
A million miles below their feet
A million miles, a million miles
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned
I'll be with you girl
Like being low
Hey hey hey like being stoned

Crowded House one of my favourite bands of all time.

The bass player and original drummer (a sad suicide) brilliant.

The song writing unusual.
Nice unusual chord sequences and timing

It must have been around 91 that as a little kid I stormed into my uncle and aunt's house to find my niece there watching mtv. She was a big fan of Nirvana and I remember we saw smells's like teen spirit. I was fascinated by the video but I also felt quite scared because it was a bit dark and moody. I think I fled home at that point.

About 10 years later I got into Nirvana obsessively myself, which lasted for quite a bit. I still enjoy their stuff as well as plenty other 90's bands.

Sadly, last year Come as you are was played at my niece's funeral

This song brings such a feeling of melancholy whenever I hear it. I saw Pearl Jam at City Park Stadium when I was in my "no makeup" phase.

When Mike said "can't stop listening to", and Valerie said "obsessed", it really made me think and try to weed a really special song out of my brain.

I don't think I need to post the Do The Evolution video by Pearl Jam... I listened/watched that about 100 times in a row with my friend. When I look back on it now, I think it's a pretty big coincidence both of us were obsessed at the same time. He's the one who showed me, and I was hooked. Every time the video would end... "Want to watch it again?" :)

In the 90's, we didn't get internet until 1996. So in the early 90's I got music from borrowing my friends cd's, columbia house mail order, and... (drum roll) the radio.

How many times did I call in and request "More Than A Feeling" by Boston? Definitely obsessed with that one too.

I had a 5 minute long cassette tape I put Tumbthumping by Chumbawamba on both sides of it. Think I drive my poor buddy nuts, had that one in the car ;-)

This song was playing the other day at the gym and I thought, "wow, sounds like Chris Cornell, what is this?"

Gotta admit, I only knew Black Hole Sun... My bad.

T0_zzCLLRvE

Cornell on "Spoonman":
"It's more about the paradox of who [Artis the Spooman (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artis_the_Spoonman)] is and what people perceive him as. He's a street musician, but when he's playing on the street, he is given a value and judged completely wrong by someone else. They think he's a street person, or he's doing this because he can't hold down a regular job. They put him a few pegs down on the social ladder because of how they perceive someone who dresses differently. The lyrics express the sentiment that I much more easily identify with someone like Artis than I would watch him play."

"What's Up"

Twenty-five years and my life is still
Trying to get up that great big hill
Of hope for a destination
I realized quickly when I knew I should
That the world was made up of this brotherhood
Of man for whatever that means

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
"What's going on?!"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

And I try, oh, my God, do I try
I try all the time
In this institution
And I pray, oh, my God, do I pray
I pray every single day
For revolution

And so I cry sometimes
When I'm lying in bed
Just to get it all out
What's in my head
And I, I am feeling a little peculiar

And so I wake in the morning
And I step outside
And I take a deep breath and I get real high
And I scream from the top of my lungs,
"What's going on?!"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"
And I say, "Hey, hey, hey, hey!"
I said, "Hey, what's going on?"

Twenty-five years and my life is still

Jesus, Val, I'm so sorry about your fiance. Thank you for sharing that:bearhug:.

The previous song you posted, 'Low', is sooo perfectly 90's:clapping:. And also a favorite of mine.

Cristian, that Soundgarden tune is pretty bad ass. They are the consummate 90's band. Well played there.

Lots of excellent stuff here. Making my way thru all these tunes now. 'Tubthumping' haha!..wow...good one Petra!

My favourite era for music was the 1980’s. By the 1990’s, I was in major work mode and music was more in the background. I remember feeling quite miffed when CD’s replaced Vinyl LP’s—likely around this time period?

I probably like this one because it sounds like the ‘80’s!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpz2AWu4PZg

This one was released in 1993.

Jesse Cook’s debut album Tempest came out in 1995. This is a more recent version of that song.

Being a huge movie buff (more than music) some of my fondest memories of youth were BIG movie events, those opening nights of standing in line for hours and hours sampling the delights of the English weather. The queue for E.T. went down the road, around a corner, and down another road. Oh what fun.

Sometimes just a song, a theme, can take you back to those very moments, like this one, to the summer of '91, and hordes of nerds like me waiting to cram into the local cinema to finally see what we'd all been waiting for. The 7 year wait for a sequel to Terminator was finally at an end! I always think of that when I hear this.

DeDukshyn, I was a fan of Tom Cochrane too and went to one of his concerts.

Crosby, I listened to Sarah McLachlan a lot too. A bit of trivia—Sarah was adopted. Her adoptive father was a distant cousin of my Dad’s; his grandmother was married in our house years ago—back when people got married at home. I think she was a school teacher who moved from Ontario to North Dakota; from there, some of the family went to Washington state. Sarah’s dad went to Nova Scotia where he and his wife adopted Sarah. I believe Sarah now lives in Vancouver, B.C. I’ve never met her.

Canadians will likely remember this one from 1991.

Great music, Chanie. I still love all of those.

Here's one song I always adored:

xK_36lULIb0

Wash it in the sea let it soak all night
Wash it in the sea let the saltwater wash it away
Soak it in bleach till its white on white
Soak it in bleach till the blood just washes away

Hang it in the wind let it blow all night
Hang it up high, let the high wind blow it away
Hang it in the wind let the sun burn bright
Hang it in the wind till the blood just washes away

I have waited wasted years
For the child that's come and gone today
I wasted all this fear
How can I just turn and wash it away
If I can then I will wash it away
If she can then she will wash it away
If I can then I will wash it away
If she can then she will wash it away

Forty years spent one by one
Forty years of life just slipping away
What I’d give for a firstborn son
Forty years of blood just washing away

I have waited wasted lives
I have waited long enough I’d say
Say what about, what about, what about, what about
How can I just turn and wash it away
If I can then I will wash it away
If she can then she will was it away
If I can then I will wash it away
If she can then she will was it away

So send me an angel
Send me the ghost that I was
Just send me an angel
Send me the ghost that I was
That I was, that I am. I will wash it away
She will wash it away
I will wash it away if I can then I will, I will and I will
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, hey yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hey yeah, yeah. If I can then I will wash it away

Where have you gone, my Rosealia?
Into the crowd, he'll never find ya
If you walk real fast
And you stay down low
So many times, so many chances, this one could be your last

You say no, no, no, the fighting has left you tired
You say no, no, no, but the fighting goes on
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia

What has he done, my senorita?
His kind of love is going to kill ya
Do you fake a smile
When you dodge the blows?
So many times, so many chances, this one could be your last

You say no, no, no, the fighting has left you tired
You say no, no, no, but the hurting goes on
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia

Jealousy can rip your heart out
And jealousy can turn a hand into a fist

You say no, no, no, the fighting has left you tired
You say no, no, no, but the fighting goes on
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia
Put on your mask, wearing your cape
Put on your mask, my Rosealia

Put on your mask
Wearing your cape, hey hey
Put on your mask
Wearing your cape

I’m sorry about your son and fiance, Valerie. You’ve had more than your fair share of sadness, but it’s nice that you can find some solace in music. Mike is right that it has the power to transport us back to an earlier place and time.

I liked the story about your son and the missing CD. Sounds like he either decided to return it or find it for you after he died—knowing that you'd make the connection and smile.

With all that’s going on in the world, I find this discussion about 90’s music to be rather soothing—the songs that everyone is posting are transporting me back to a time when the biggest thing I had to worry about was learning how to use a new-fangled thing called a computer! I bought my first one in 1994, but was using them at work by the start of that decade.

The 1990’s was also the decade when I sat in a meeting and heard two managers say that “this world wide web thing” was just a fad and wouldn’t really catch on!

So, I was in this bar called the "Half Moon" in the Irish Channel in New Orleans during the nineties. The bar had been around since the early 1960's at least, because my Dad grew up on St. Andrew and this bar/restaurant was around the corner. You in England would call it a pub.

We used to go there to eat oysters on the half shell when I was just a little girl.

Fast forward to the nineties and I was there on St. Paddy's day. They had a jukebox and I found Beck's "Jack Ass". I played it over and over and a guy walked up to me and asked "Are you the one who keeps playing that song over and over?" Well aware that I was potentially going to be in a boxing match, I told him that yes, it was me playing that song over and over.

He smiled and said "Man, I love that song" and he walked away.

Canada has produced some terrific female artists over the years.

Shania Twain ranks high for sheer attitude. I’m pretty sure this one inspired my lifelong love of leopard!

I’ve heard k.d. Lang in concert twice—once at a small local venue and once at a huge outdoor jamboree in Wheeling, West Virgina. She is by far the best voice I have ever heard live. She just blew it out of the park in both places.

Genius.

The second song actually came out in 2000. I'm making allowances here. Why? Because it's my ****ing thread, that's why:wizard:

Back when I could tolerate caffeine, I'd drink endless cups of strong coffee and listen to these guys over and over. I had this theory that if I listened to genius repetitively, it would eventually download into my brain and would be at my disposal someday in some form or another should I attempt something creative. It still remains a theory, I'm afraid.

Wow... 90's... I read I'm about your age Mike (I'm born in 1977). 90's was the time I developed a personal taste, starting with Hip Hop (Public Enemy, A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Black moon, Black Sheep, Dr Dre, Snoop, Fugees, Biggie, Cypress Hill, Wu Tang Clan, Gravediggaz, Psycho Realm and soo many more groups/artists). Thoroughly enjoyed that period at the time; only later realizing the kind of effect the (gangsta rap) music had on my life. Though specifically Public Enemy opened my young eyes on different subjects and sparked my distrusting the government. Fear of a black planet was the first album I listened to maybe hundreds of times. This was one of the favorites from that album:
KHxkPNx23Og

Within the Hip Hop phase there was also a 3 year period of Dutch hardcore (Techno-ish Dutch style). To give you all an impression. (Make sure volume is low (or off even :blushing: ))
ZWk0aDKSHqc
I actually was present during that party. Loads of extasy pills involved. Period lasted 3 years and trashed my body intensely (still recovering ).

After the devastating hardcore period, I mellowed out, trying to get into a more sustainable way of living. Here's one of my favorites from that period:
HuLjsW8XhY4

And during last couple of years I found out what great music Radiohead has created. I liked some of the numbers already in the nineties, but didn't know their albums back then.
One of my favorites from the 90's from Radiohead:

Hey Slobbe, thanks for those selections and all the background!

The hardcore Dutch techno was....interesting

Man I had no idea that all the hip hop of that era was so popular in your neck of the woods too. You made a great list there. I might add the Ghetto Boys to it, if I may. This song was a favorite of mine for a while:

Chanie, that is so sweet, but I don't feel sad anymore. It took a long time and a lot of hard work, but I bring my son up a lot because I love him. He may be out of my line of sight, but he's still alive. I love this thread because it reminds me of him and me. We raised each other.

Crowded House one of my favourite bands of all time.

The bass player and original drummer (a sad suicide) brilliant.

The song writing unusual.
Nice unusual chord sequences and timing

Yes! Some of the finest pop songs ever crafted. Tim Finn also has some really good solo albums.

My real love is harder rock music and The Queens of the Stone Age are my all time favorite, except for Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a hundred others. Haha!

Mike, hats off & kudos for starting this great thread!

The 90's had great decades of music behind it that fed the artists. IMHO Technology was at a point where it aided the musicians to find what they wanted without totally taking the human 'touch' out of it. That said, recently some music has too much tech - EDM and other electronic music excluded, again IMO, Electronic music has found itself (for lack of a better description - too many thoughts going through my mind fright now.)

Currently, I am searching for new music and wondering where is music headed? Perhaps where are at a spot where we need a band to come along and kick the industry in it's ass like the Sex Pistols did. Like the roar that Nirvana started.

Music is certainly such a strong part of our culture. The basic drum since the earliest of time. In the 90's guitar sounds really defined a band, and also the sound of the snare drum. I could go on and on, but I got some work to do. :)

Crowded House ARIA Hall of Fame Induction 2016
Crowded House's historic induction into the ARIA Hall of Fame for anyone who didn't get to experience it (or just wants to watch it again). This is the complete 23-minute video, and includes a humorous intro by Flight of the Conchords, a recap of the Crowded House's history, the band's memorable acceptance speech, quality tributes by Missy Higgins (Fall at Your Feet) and Bernard Fanning (Better Be Home Soon), concluding with Crowded House playing an awesome version of Distant Sun

Having done covers of some of tiier songs I am biased.
Covering songs forces one to really listen note by note chord by chord.
For me they have it all,
Rock vocals, great harmonies. melodic bass playing--the songs tell stories.
One of the best bands of their time for me.

Hi Patient,

I agree, we do need a band or solo artist to come along and kick the industry in the ass.

I think it's important to have that one dominant band at the top of the pyramid, regardless of whether we like them or not. It's gives the whole thing a healthy shape. There is no pyramid now...only a square. Squares really have no utility.

Until that one band comes along, the rest of 'em won't even realize how stale they've become. There must be a standard or baseline, and right now I'm not sure it exists. It's the old stalwarts like U2 and The Rolling Stones that still sell out the most stadiums worldwide. I love both those bands, but that's a bad sign. It might be indicative of a trend suggesting creativity is on the decline...which wouldn't be surprising in the least, since no one reads anymore, or has the patience to seriously indulge a discipline like guiitar....what with everyone's head being buried in cell phones these days.

I thought Quentin Alexander showed some promise as an artist on American Idol a few years ago, but then, he got into some kind of verbal tiff with judge Harry Connick Jr. and the following week, he was sent home. I always felt that he got thrown under the bus for being too outspoken. I think it speaks volumes about the music industry—how they can make or break a career on a whim. It’s a pity because he reminded me of a young Michael Hutchence from INXS.

Here’s one of his performances on Idol:

And a video that he has made since leaving Idol:

Speaking of INXS, I met Michael Hutchence back in 1980. At the time, I didn’t know he played in a band, but his charisma was already off the charts. Although (in my opinion) they did their best work in the 1980’s, INXS played a memorable concert at Wembley Stadium in 1991.

It just occurred to me that both Alexander AND Hutchence were victims of the music industry as Hutchence died (likely by suicide) in November, 1997.

Life was good as I got re acclimated to the US of A and its music as the shift from the Golden Age of Hip Hop became Gangsta Rap and the cooptation of the music. There were still some gems being made, though, of course. Can't fully hide the light, nor will the darkness ever be total.

One of my favourite bands due to their dedication to making themselves accessible and affordable for their fans, that and their music is excellent. Hi Dave, yep, shaved it close. No choice. I'm receding to the moon. I'm like Burt Reynolds at high tide. You know how you know it's time to shave your head? It's when the following happens on a regular basis - you wake up in the morning, look at yourself in the mirror and say "You can't possibly be f#cking serious man!" That's how you know. Yep, any attempt at growing my hair out will only result in me resembling Phil f#cking Collins. But I'm not bitter or anything (yes I am)

Speaking of Phil...he certainly deserves an honorable mention here. I've never posted YouTube stuff from my phone though. Let's see if I can pull it off...

It's funny, back in high school (mid 80's)...and even through college...my hair was so important. I took so much pride in my hair back in the day..had it decked out down past my shoulders and used expensive hair products (Joico / Redkin). Through my 20's however, I always said that if I was ever to lose my hair that I would simply shave it all off rather than look silly with a comb-over or a toupee or something (or worse...a transplant)...as I never wanted to be "that guy". Once I hit my 30's, I started losing it down the middle and it was really noticeable once I cut my hair short. At 35 I said f*ck it, took a razor to my scalp...and I never looked back. Long flowing hair is nice and all...but I really dig the "just got out of prison" look with the goatee. Sooooo much less money spent on products and haircuts...and soooooooooooo much less time in front of a mirror in the mornings (more time for sleep). Ride the wave, brother.

I'll throw in some Mellencamp here. His hey-day was in the 80's, but I think some of his stuff put out in the 90's was way better.

You’ve gone way back into the 80s with this one Mike (good call though). Wow, talk about music being a time machine, this just reminded me of one of the coolest shows I ever saw. Not Phil Collins, unfortunately, it was a sky show in Townsville in the early 90s. The crowd was on the beach and it was coming to the end of sunset when the organisers directed us to all lay on our backs and look only at the sky for the finale.

This song was playing through the speakers around the beach, so we were listening to the epic intro when a B52 bomber from USA flew directly over us. I was laying on the bend in the beach in the middle, so the bomber came from behind and flew directly over me. I thought I was going to have a heart attack, it was so enormous and low that it utterly eclipsed my view and it looked like I could just reach up and touch its belly. Then as the bomber flew from our view the fireworks display began with the first ones exploding in perfect time with each bang of the drums in this song. I was breathless at that point and watched the rest of the display in a bit of a daze, the effect was like the experience beat the song into the depths of my soul, epic show, epic song.

Rach that story is epic! So cool. Music events, at their best, can offer those types of communal experiences that you simply can't get anywhere else.

Crowds of any kind usually make me run. But I've been fortunate enough to have a couple great experiences at music events. I went and saw the band "Live" with my first love, and it's a lovely memory now.

I'll get off my Oasis kick after this last one here. It's live, and the crowd is participating heavily and the energy is great. Might have been a cool show to have been at:

I love this thread! It is so much fun and such a great resource. I’d forgotten how much I loved music back then.

Your story Rachel reminded me of an Alice Cooper concert that I attended in the early ‘70’s. At the end of it, a ton of feathers came pouring down from the ceiling onto the crowd. A white cloud of them. It was unexpected and seemed magical in the moment, but the feathers ruined the navy melton cloth coat I was wearing.

That concert also had something called “festival seating” meaning no reserved seats. They just opened the arena doors and the crowd swept in en masse. I remember the terror of being swept along with the crowd as it surged towards the doors—feeling like I was going to a) suffocate and die or b) be trampled underfoot.

In December 1979, eleven people died at a Who concert with festival seating.
See: http://ew.com/article/1992/12/04/whos-concert-tragedy/

Sadly, it happened again on January 18, 1991 at an AC/DC concert in Utah. Three fans were killed. See: http://www.gibson.com/News-Lifestyle/Features/en-us/spotlight-0118-2011.aspx

AC/DC’s song “Thunderstruck” was released in 1990.

Well, hopefully when the bottom drops out some band will come around and wake the kids up. Then they can create a tsunami that will travel the world!

You know, it's funny as a parent. Both my wife and I have always been into music big time, and when we started our family we thought that we would be the parents of the kids who had their friends over to hang out and "jam". We have the gear around for any of them to pick up, but our kids are just not that into it yet. So funny how things turn. Our kids are like, "Oh no, not Dad's music!" Lol!

Yeah, it feels like the days of big stadium gigs are disappearing. EDM is owning those large crowds recently. Go into a music store and you do not see that many people trying out guitars like there use to be. Soon we will probably see signs posted in the guitar section that say "Please play Stairway to Heaven and Seven Nation Army - please!" LOL! (hopefully not though)

10:30 in this hotel room,
You and I locked in the gloom,
Lost out of love once again,
But I've got you here with me, Friend.

Tintin's (brief) adventures on Memory Lane

So, “The Smiths” disband in 1987/88 and what will fill this gaping void? (You can almost hear Morrissey singing that.)

It was the scent of cheap deodorant-post moshpit-marijuana smoke ---a trifecta of nares quivering overload and the dopamine rush to Sub Pop (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sub_Pop#Formation) that thrilled and stirred the senses in this then 20-something, who was honing his song-writing craft –-- cutting his teeth on Beatles, Hendrix, Cream et al who took a Damascean left turn down a dark alley and occupied his time playing hop-scotch between the used needles, archaic chewed gum, sweat-stained T-shirts and blood and lipstick drenched copies of Dregs fanzine (http://www.dissensus.com/showthread.php?t=2757&p=36310#post36310)

---who was looking for something DIFFERENT – another inspiration: a deafening chiaroscuro of buzz-saw, feedback and melancholia.

Who needed to feed solipsistic musings until he retched; who devoured Melody Maker – who may just have fallen a little in love with Holly Hernandez.

Who had, and definitely did fall in love with ---and maybe still has doe eyed fantasies involving Katie Jane Garside.

Katie Jane Garside

Enter Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees, Smashing Pumpkins, Janes Addiction, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, RATM (and he never looked back over his shoulder, the one that wasn’t sporting avian graffiti), Raymond Pettibon, Black Flag.

Then he hears a familiar sound, closer to home, and cuts his hair.

Madchester (the scene), Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Tricky, Massive Attack, Daisy Chainsaw, Portishead.

These were, and still are, a very few of my favourite things from that time – the actual list really is endless.

In no particular order:

“Nevermind” – Nirvana
“Springtime” – Levellers 5
“Goo” – Sonic Youth
“Drink Me” – Queenadreens
“OK Computer” – Radiohead
“Little Earthquakes” – Tori Amos
“Rid of Me” – PJ Harvey
“Siamese Dream” – Smashing Pumpkins
“Ritual De Lo Habitual" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VR7dGxgptw) – Janes Addiction
“Pre Millenium Tension” – Tricky
“Fear of a Black Planet” – Public Enemy
"Suede" - Suede

I used to listen to a lots of music in the 90's. I remember those times in the early 90's when MTV came to Finland but the thing is, it was on cable and we didn't have cable at our house. It was also when they actually played music videos almost 24/7. I was visiting my grandparents and my cousins as they both lived in same town and I remember bringing a lot of VHS-tapes so that I could record music videos, in LP-mode of course. So I stayed up late and recorded everything I possibly could and when I got back home I called my friends to come by and we would watch those videos I had recorded. Fun times.:) I was into heavier stuff right after Metallica released The Black Album so in the mid 90's I listened to a lot of metal, almost everything but black metal. But one of my guilty pleasures is to sit back, have few cold ones and watch 80-90's music videos on Youtube. Even those I absolutely hated back then.

But let's start with something that just blew my mind back then when I first saw it. I had to have the whole record immediately after I saw this video:

Some heavier stuff in this post. Does anyone like Dream Theater? This song too blew my mind at the time. I was back then trying to learn how to play guitar and when I thought I could play something, I heard this. It seemed almost impossible to learn or to play.

James LaBrie: Pull Me Under didn't start breaking until we shot that amazing video.

Kevin Moore: We were in the dressing room and Dave Chieka our first road manager comes in and says... "The record company decided to shoot some footage tonight. They got some kind of deal going. They're going to have a film crew come out and do it really cheap. So put on your best shirts."

James Labrie: Yeah right.

Daisy Chainsaw - 'Love Your Money' live on The Word

The Word was a semi-controversial popular music programme that achieved a certain notoriety, but, was almost a 'must-see' back in the day as you'd never be quite certain what sort of shenanigans was likely to occur - I don't think the producers believed in editing, or post-production, of any kind, much or even at all for that matter.

The programme had an endearing lack of class; charmingly rough-and-ready.

In those days, live television really was LIVE. Here's the mighty Katie Jane Garside and the chaps performing their very first television performance. This had me in raptures and grabbing the remote to activate full throttle on the volume.

Raw and unadulterated energy - they really don't make 'em like they used to.

One of Kurt Cobain's Final Interviews - Incl. Extremely Rare Footage

https://tvclip.biz/video/3CTsGievjMU/one-of-kurt-cobain-s-final-interviews-incl-extremely-rare-footage.html

If you've landed on this thread then there is every chance that you have (probably) lived through your twenties, and survived them, hopefully largely terribly unscathed, I hope.

Kurt didn't make it out to the other side of that most challenging and turbulent of decades for most of us, as we wrestle with abandoning the last vestiges of childhood and start the often painful journey to maturity.

This charming interview that took place in 1993, and as the video title states, would have been recorded really not terribly long before his death.

In it you see a young man who appears to have found a little inner peace and looking forward to a future that was likely to offer much. Sadly that was not to be.

I'm sharing the liner notes to this interview as published on TVClip.biz, and in case anyone is curious as to why I've not linked to where this is mirrored on YouTube? For the simple reasons that I'm mindful of the very recent YouTube interferences (which wouldn't necessarily render TVClip.biz immune either I guess), but may provide an alternative source.

And, as I've done many times before on the forum already, TVClip.biz provides a handy download button that makes it dead simple to grab video footage that you could archive and hopefully enjoy for quite some time yet.

I loved Kurt's work, and if you are similarly touched and moved by it, you may well enjoy this really quite charming interview. (And the interviewer herself deserves great credit for clearly making him feel at ease.)

One of Kurt Cobain's final interviews before his tragic death, this WatchMojo Presents video From the MUCH Vaults is an incredible look into the man and artist that we present on the day that would have been his 50th birthday. This raw video from 1993 features 6 minutes of very rarely seen footage from the original interview that was not aired on television. Nirvana's legacy still burns bright and their music continues to influence and inspire people to this day. We hope that you enjoy this thoughtful and engaged interview with a man who meant so much to so many people.

00:07 1) What are your favourite books and have they influenced your songwriting?

1:50 2) Is it hard write new material in a short timeframe after having had your entire life to the write the material for your first two albums?

02:39 3) There are a lot of baby references in your songs: wombs, babies’ breath; is this a huge part of your life…?

04:19 4) Do you think the old saying that you can’t buy happiness is true?

05:08 5) Now that you’ve had so much success, so quickly and so surprisingly, as well as a baby, your marriage, etc., what excites you now?

05:49 6) How do you personally cope with having private relationships being scrutinized publicly?

09:04 7) Is it weird to suddenly have lawyers and people who do that stuff for you?

10:40 8) Do you think being in the music industry for a long time makes you nutty?

11:48 9) Have you ever had second thoughts about bringing a child into the world, despite being able to see the world for what it is?

13:38 10) “Grunge”: where did the term come from?

17:19 11) One of the interesting things about Nirvana that you don’t talk about much is that you seem very concerned about sexism. How do you make people aware of that problem?

21:21 12) We’re doing a special on The Replacements, did they have any influence n you on as a songwriter or any of the music you did?

23:58 13) Did you get to meet anyone that you would consider your musical hero?

24:40 14) Tell me about the record you’re doing with William Burroughs.

25:50 15) One of the members of Nirvana said he was perturbed by your mainstream audience and wanted to just make music for your real fans...?

My wife often jokes that I'm stuck in the 90's and my reply is "I would have it no other way, for it twas the coolest decade a man could have ever hoped to have lived in".

We had the best hip-hop music, the best rock music and the best electronica music.

It wasn't so complicated, cell phones were rare until the end of the nineties, social media didn't exist yet and concerts were events you did your best not to miss.

Spellbound posted that Tori Amos album "Little Earthquakes" oh man did that get me through one of my worst all time break ups.

God just seeing the album cover for that album puts a tinge of excitement and fear through me.

I was a big Rage fan MuxFolder, amazing concerts, it's funny because I was a dreamtheater fan until I saw them in concert, too funny.

Tintin I freaking loved the Beastie Boys in the 90's, they were more than musicians they were avatars of "what was cool".

Mike I really dug Beck, I remember going to this mosh pit club that would play songs from Suicidal Tendencies and Prong, and they would play Beck's "Loser" song and I would start hip hop dancing to these amazing club speakers, to go from a mosh circle to being able to hip hop in the same club really stood out to me, good times. :inlove:
Akasha I actually liked The Jesus and Mary Chain, they picked up where your precious Echo and the Bunnymen left off. :waving:

Can't say the same about Stone Roses tho! I used to like them but now they give me the creeps. "Shoot You Down" sounds like a threat, and "Elizabeth my Dear" sounds like a threat too.
