(RTTNews) - South Korea, already infected with foot-and-mouth disease, has confirmed its first outbreak of avian flu (bird flu) since 2008.

The Agricultural Ministry confirmed on Friday cases of bird flu at two poultry farms in central and south-west Korea.

More than 100,000 chickens and over 10,000 ducks contaminated with the H5N1 strain of avian influenza have been culled at Cheonan and Iksan, south of Seoul, after birds developed symptoms on Wednesday.

The Ministry's animal quarantine division has banned transporting birds within ten kilometers of the farms and ordered to cull 92,000 birds as a precaution, South Korea's state News Agency Yonhap reported.

Avian influenza, which can be transmitted to humans, returns to South Korea after a gap of two years. Around 8.5 million birds were slaughtered to contain an outbreak in 2008.

Foot-and-mouth disease returned to the country in late November, just eight months after authorities claimed to have eradicated the highly contagious virus.
