A mother's "love" - not pretty:
'After eggs hatch, Stegodyphus lineatus stops eating and vomits 40% of internal guts onto own face, allowing spiderlings to feast on the mixture. Once that’s gone, spiderlings pierce her abdomen and consume what is left until she dies.'.

Every winter the squirrels entertain and rampage in my garden around the bird feeders. They test every bird feeder to its maximum and have even tried to dig up the poles. I have found them incredibly intelligent and have had to buy really strong steel feeders so that the birds get to eat as well. They are responsible for the hazel nut bushes that spring up in the veg patch and the small oak trying to grow in the polytunnel.

I remember reading and seeing (some years ago) a photo of the helicopter flying in very close to the giant snake, which looked in attack mode, but don't know if that was a true photo or a hoax - I'm kind of reluctant to post any more giant snake pics - haha! Here's more info on this particular event. Some years ago, I vaguely recall reading that this sighting was in the Brazilian Amazon. There seems to be quite a few sightings of extinct ice-age creatures in that region - dinosaurs, etc.
'Upon sighting the reptile, he had the pilot turn around and make another pass. at which the serpent reared up the frontal ten feet of its body head as if to strike, giving him the opportunity to observe its underbelly. However, after flying so low that Van Lierde believed it to have been within striking distance of his helicopter, he ordered the pilot to resume his journey, and so the creature was never properly documented, although some reports suggest that an onboard photographer managed to snap a shot of it.
It is believed to be either a massively oversized African rock python, a new species of snake entirely, or perhaps a descendant of the giant Eocene snake Gigantophis.
An interview with Colonel Van Lierde about the sighting can be found here'

One morning, I got up and looked out the front window to see my cat, sitting side by side with a coyote, almost touching. Naturally, I was alarmed, but as I watched and pondered what to do, the two of them just sat there all calm and peaceful, staring at the woods, like they were buddies.
I slowly opened the door, and the coyote calmly sauntered off, back to the woods, and my cat came in for his breakfast. It was like the peaceable kingdom!

I had a friend that had a pet wolf (yup seriously). He brought it over one day and the wolf and my cat got along amazingly well - both acted extremely mature and respectable - its amazing how different some animals might act toward each other when they aren't in dire need of food ... Plus the fact that some cats just have the ability to demand respect ... (from animals not extremely hungry that is - my last cat got ate, and I was unfortunate enough to hear the debacle, even though I didn't see it, it was heart wrenching, but hey, wild animals have to eat too, such is life)

"This is the en-deer-ing moment a wild stag visited an old lady's window for snacks and strokes.
Hungry deer Flippen visits 81-year-old Mette Kvam at her mountainside home in Aurland, Norway, twice a day every day.
The widowed pensioner loves to feed the cheeky deer, and the pair have developed an adorable bond over the past four years.
The cute scene was caught on camera by 52-year-old Britt Haugsevje Vangen, who saw the sweet pair together while she was out on a walk across the mountains.
Britt, a library assistant, said: "Mette feeding Flippen with bread, and they enjoying each other's company."

Starfish Walking on the Beach

"It was early evening, probably around 6pm or so at low tide. We noticed there were starfish walking around on the sand near the water. Some were in tide pools but some were just strolling on the sand, very very very slowly. The ones that were on the sand we carefully relocated back to the ocean or a tide pool. Other people coming out to the beach were fascinated by the large amount of starfish and helped relocate the walkers to the water as well.
This was shot on the Outer Banks of North Carolina (specifically Corolla, NC) in early October 2012. Almost the exact same spot on the beach that a WWII mine washed up in late September 2017 (https://outerbanksvoice.com/2017/09/2...)
Also, to clear up the questions about the "foot" in the video. It's my son's foot and he was squatting down. He was 4 at the time of the video. Looks like a strange deformed thing but it's just a normal 4 year old's foot."

My friend calls the neighbourhood squirrels for dinner, it's the weirdest thing you've ever seen. One of them is actually blind and still gets around, it's unbelievable. He feeds them with peanuts. Speaking of squirrels, I saw the funniest thing one day: I was walking out to the garden to check on my plants when I spooked a squirrel. He went to sprint vertically up the trunk of a magnolia tree as they typically do when they run off. I guess his front paws lost grip as he was climbing the trunk, he accidentally flew backwards off the tree but managed to stick the landing onto the ground. He basically did a moonsault. That's a once in a lifetime sight for ya. It was hilarious because they are very ninja like but that guy was a real klutz.
I really want a capuchin monkey. I've wanted one for a while but I wont get one because I'm a sometimes responsible adult (therefore boring). I don't flippantly buy pets. A friend of mine is around one often and he says while they're a lot of fun they are high maintenance. I have enough of that with my dog.

A wonderful story:
'Many years ago, the world-famous Italian freediver Enzo Maiorca was diving in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of his hometown of Syracuse, Sicily.
As he entered the water he felt a dolphin nudging his back. He soon realized the dolphin wasn’t trying to play, but to communicate and solicit his help. Once he had his attention, the dolphin dove down about 12 feet, and Enzo followed. There he saw another dolphin tangled in an abandoned fishing net.
Enzo swam up and called to his daughter Rossana, who was on a nearby boat, for his diving knives. Within a few minutes, the two managed to cut the drowning dolphin free (dolphins can survive under water without air for about 10 minutes) and use their arms as a stretcher to carry the exhausted animal to the surface.
As the dolphin emerged from the water, she let out “almost a human cry,” according to Enzo.
Then came a surprise. The rescued dolphin was actually pregnant... And she gave birth to a calf right then and there, under the watchful eyes of her mate.
“The little one was led to his mama’s nipples by gentle strokes of the adult dolphin’s beak" Enzo recalled. "I like to think that on that day we reunited a family.”
Shortly after the rescue, the male dolphin circled Enzo and Rosanna, “stood” up, and touched Enzo’s cheek with his beak “like a kiss”.
How did Enzo know to follow the dolphin? “I maintain that his brain waves influenced our minds,” he said.
′′Until man learns to respect and to talk to the animal world, he can never know his true role on Earth,” he added

Enzo Maiorca was portrayed in Luc Besson's magnificent film from 1988, "The Big Blue" '

Badger and coyote seen travelling together in tunnel
NEW YORK - A team of researchers in California documenting how wildlife interacts with roadway structures has found a coyote and badger that appear to be close traveling companions.
The charming footage, showing a coyote waiting at the mouth of a culvert until its badger pal is ready to follow, was captured via a remote-sensor camera near Gilroy, in the Santa Cruz Mountains.
The camera is one of a number set up by the Peninsula Open Space Trust. The trust says it is using the footage to build a “robust data set to identify the areas of safe passage for wildlife that can be maintained or enhanced, as well as areas where crossing structures could be most useful.”
The video of the coyote and badger also shows raccoons, skunks, and a deer.

Recently, a photographer went viral for his touching photos showing an orangutan lending a helping hand to a man in a river.
Recently, amateur photographer Anil Prabhakar captured a fascinating sight in a conservation forest area in Borneo. While on a safari with his friends, the photographer stumbled upon a forest warden who was clearing snakes, the sworn enemy of orangutans, from the river. Just as Prabhakar prepared to take a picture, an orangutan reached out his hand to the man, apparently wanting to help him out. The wholesome photos quickly went viral, leaving people in awe of the orangutan’s act of kindness.

DYING MAN TEARS UP AS EMPATHY HORSE LOCKS EYES.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erMdRsSprY8
MUST-WATCH: 8 MILLION people have been moved by this extraordinary video as a DYING MAN TEARS UP AS EMPATHY HORSE LOCKS EYES. We are reposting this from 9 months ago - our need for love and connection is so critical! If you already are part of the @Everyone Matters family, you know we are all about having a loving heart, empathy, caring about others, and for ourselves. Being LOVING. This video is for you - well, it's for everyone. We ALL want connection. And when we suffer- like when we are ill - we are all our inner child - inside afraid, trying to be strong, hold it together, but also tender and afraid, which we try to push away.
All that non-verbally manifests in this incredibly-special 3-minute video, as we follow a remarkably sensitive horse who is brought to visit patients in the hospital (he also visits the dying elderly, the dying children, and those with Alzheimers, in various locations.)
This video captures beautiful Peyo, a chestnut horse, who empathetically goes to patients needing comfort. Amazingly, Peyo tells his trainer which room he wants to go in. The trainer never leads the way, but follows Peyo's lead.
We watch Peyo enter the room of a man we are told is dying, who seems to be trying to hold it together, but also appears emotionally shut down.
Peyo stop and locks eyes with the man.
The man locks eyes, and stares back into the horse's empathetic eyes. And they both simply stare - yes, COMMUNE. The man finally breaks the wall holding his emotion, and starts to weep. He on some level is reacting to the horse seeing into him.
(Who of us doesn't know that moment - when we are trying to hold it together, but something pushes past that house of cards??)
Peyo's trainer describes that moment of their connection: "pure" and "honest. And then adds the profound kicker: "They like each other very much without asking for anything else.”
Thank you, Peyo. And thank you to the makers of this video, who SO understand that we ALL need connection to other beating hearts. (Human and furry loved ones). We need people to SEE our beating (sometimes wounded) heart. In this case, Peyo goes where wounded hearts are beating, souls needing comfort, hearts needing to be seen, needing the joy of simple heartbeat connection. - HeathCliff Rothman

I have followed Shirley's story from her sad and tragic beginnings to the final years of peace and happiness in the sanctuary. Her story has always been an emotional one for me and I really cheered when she was finally released from years of misery and servitude to a short (7 years) but happy, peaceful and "freeish" retirement.
Remembering Shirley. 'The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Asian elephant Shirley at age 72. The Sanctuary family celebrates our memories of Shirley’s wisdom, strength, and perseverance. She demonstrated to us all that it is possible to trust, to heal, and to love again after enduring many decades of hardship.
Shirley defied all odds as one of the oldest elephants in captivity and lived well beyond the life expectancy for a captive Asian elephant. Shirley was The Sanctuary’s oldest elephant and, at the time of her passing, held the record for the second oldest elephant in North America.'

When i was a kid, we had some lynx around our cabin, we would go about 2 times a year and they accepted us as "part of the group", but one of them got very close to me, mostly because i fed her good stuff.
One day i decided to bully her around and at first she was fine with it and played back, but then got upset, the only magical thing about that moment is how fast she was getting me all mauled on the legs lmao
Unfortunately she got shot.. And i know it was my fault :(
I learned to respect wild animals that day, to say the least :P
Animals are truly magical, i just think we should keep our distance if we want them to be around for next generations, but so hard to resist loving them up close, no matter how wild they can be :flower:

Since the big freeze here I have had my shoes go missing off the porch. I take them off before I go into the house. First it was one flip flop, then one of my leather boots, the next night my trainers disappeared.....So last night I waiting and watched. Who is my shoe thief?? Foxes! Seems they have their kits this time of year and they steal shoes for the babies to play with......

Wisdom the albatross, the world's oldest known wild bird, has another chick at age 70
5 March, 2021
The remarkable bird has outlived mating partners, and even the biologist who first placed a band on her in 1956
https://www.abc.net.au/news/image/10598198-3x2-700x467.jpg
At 70 years of age, Wisdom the Laysan albatross has hatched another chick.
Regarded as “oldest known wild bird in history (https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/worlds-oldest-bird-just-turned-70-why-so-special)”, Wisdom has outlived previous mating partners as well as the biologist Chandler Robbins, who first banded her in 1956.
Wisdom hatched the chick on 1 February in the Midway Atoll national wildlife refuge in the North Pacific, where more than a million albatross return to nest each year.
Wisdom’s long-term mate, Akeakamai, who she has been with since 2010 according to the US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS), fathered the chick. The USFWS also stated that albatross find their mates through “dance parties”.
“We believe Wisdom has had other mates,” US Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Dr Beth Flint said in the organisation’s article on medium (https://medium.com/usfwspacificislands/worlds-oldest-known-banded-wild-bird-hatches-chick-at-midway-atoll-2708a0b3f2c0). “Though albatross mate for life, they may find new partners if necessary – for example if they outlive their first mate.”
USFWS estimated Wisdom has hatched more than 30 chicks over the course of her lifetime.

"On the day of the photo, I remained in the tide pool as the tide was too low to venture outside of its boundaries. In one of the shallowest parts of the pool I noticed an octopus. I placed my camera near its den and the octopus started interacting with it. It came completely out of the den and to our amazement it started shooting pictures! This woman looked after two chimps that had been in a laboratory for 6 years. She tried to get them ready to live in a reserve, I guess it was too late to just release them into the wild. She looked after them for 4 years and now she goes back to meet them again after 18 years. The reunion is really touching.
The fact that animals are used in experiments is sad and barbaric to me and this footage shows animals do have emotions, just like humans.

You're probably right about the cat (and definitely right about the crab :)). The cat head though did look like a good match for the body. My initial reaction was that someone had messed with its genes or he has been given some kind of shot to "muscle" the cat up - I've seen (sad) pictures of cows in Texas (I think) that have been given hormone shots and created freakish looking cattle with overly exaggerated muscles - something to do with making them tastier :(. Or maybe the cat is a freak of nature or some kind of breeding that went sideways. Seems to be a bunch of options but good hunch that you got it right!!

On second glance, it looks like a beefed up BatCat, :cat: perfect companion to Catwoman, perhaps....
(As an ex-nicotine addict, I could tell that crab some stories that would make it think again about taking even one more drag...)
Looks like a cat's head photoshopped onto a dog's body. Those are definitely not a cat's paws.
A ripped cat! Almost looks like s/he has been modified through some kind of breeding or another way?

“Ginormous” Walrus Turns Up in Ireland
https://projectavalon.net/Ginormous_walrus_turns_up_in_Ireland.jpg
It might have fallen asleep on an iceberg, says biologist
Strollers on the southwest coast of Ireland (https://explorersweb.com/2021/03/15/gi-normous-walrus-turns-up-in-ireland/) could hardly believe their eyes on Sunday when a walrus hauled itself wearily out of the water and lay down on the rocks to rest after its long swim from Greenland or northern Canada.
“I thought it was a seal at first, and then we saw the tusks,” said Valentia Island resident Alan Houlihan, who first spotted the lost animal. “He was ginormous, about the size of a bull.”
Marine biologist Kevin Flannery suggests that the juvenile walrus might have fallen asleep on an iceberg and drifted far offshore. By the time it reached Ireland, it was so exhausted that it ignored the stir that its presence was causing. It would not have eaten during its long swim, because it finds its food, mostly mollusks, in the shallows.
The walrus was resting on a rock that was well-known enough to have a local Gaelic name: Leac an Éisc, meaning 'fish rock'.
“He’s easily our most famous visitor since the tetrapod came to Valentia and left his footprints on the rock more than 385 million years ago,” says resident Liam Lynch.

"Pay attention humans...
Italian diver Enzo Maiorca while diving into Siracusa sea felt something patting him on the back. He turned around and saw a dolphin, which he understood that he did not want to play but express something.
The dolphin dived and Enzo followed. At a depth of twelve meters trapped in a net there was another dolphin. After managing with his wife to release it, as the two dolphins emerged they emitted an almost human cry (this is how Maiorca described it). Dolphins can be held under water for up to ten minutes then drowned. The trapped dolphin was a female who soon gave birth.
The male surrounded them and standing in front of Enzo touched his cheek (like a kiss), a gesture of gratitude. Enzo finished his speech by saying
'Until man learns to respect and communicate with the animal world, he will never be able to know his true role on this Earth.' ′′

Harpegnathos saltator! (And the same to me :) )
A wonderful name isn't it?
Perhaps we need a thread for insects, who aren't technically animals. Still, it's an interesting area I think, so for the entomologists amongst you, a study recently published by the Royal Society.
There have been many moments where I wished I could increase my own brain size but for now I'll just make do with the size it is at the moment :)
Reversible plasticity in brain size, behaviour and physiology characterizes caste transitions in a socially flexible ant (Harpegnathos saltator)

Indian jumping ants have ability to shrink brain and re-grow it — study
Colony does not perish when queen dies as ‘chosen’ workers shrink brains and expand their ovaries

Photo from National Geographic
Few species in the animal kingdom can change the size of their brain. Fewer still can change it back to its original size. Now researchers have found the first insect species with that ability: Indian jumping ants.
They are like catnip to researchers in the field. In contrast to their cousins, Indian jumping ants colonies do not perish once their queen dies. Instead, “chosen” workers take her place – with expanded ovaries and shrunken brains – to produce offspring. But, if a worker’s “pseudo-queen” status is somehow revoked, their bodies can bounce back, the research suggests.
Typically, whether an ant will be a worker or a queen is decided at the larval stage. If fed generously and given the right hormones, the ant has the chance to become a big queen. If not, then it is stuck with a career as a sterile worker deprived of the opportunity to switch – unless it’s part of a species such as the Indian jumping ant.
“They have this ability to completely transform themselves at the adult stage, and that makes them interesting to try to understand,” said lead author Dr Clint Penick from US-based Kennesaw State University.
Social insects such as ants typically inhabit a caste-based society – the queen reigns as the sole reproducer by secreting pheromones that thwart female worker ants from laying eggs. The other ants work hard: foraging and hunting for food, cleaning, caring for the young and defending the nest.
But unlike typical colonies that wither away on the death of their queen, Indian jumping ant colonies are functionally immortal.
Within hours of the queen’s death, a frenzied “ritualised combat” commences, in which workers engage in fierce duels that involve jamming antennae into each other’s faces. While this tournament persists up to a month – the chosen workers are the multitaskers who can duel and activate their ovaries. These pseudo-queens – usually five to 10 in a colony of about 100 ants – then produce that pheromone that compels the rest to treat them like royalty. Eventually, these reproductive workers get on with the process of mating with their brothers, and prolonging the life of the colony.
The pseudo-queens (formally called gamergates – not be confused with the 2014 hashtag campaign ostensibly founded to protest about perceived ethical failures in games journalism) see their life-expectancy increase from about six months to up to five years. Their ovaries swell to five times in size filling up the entire abdomen, and their brain shrink by anywhere from 20% to 25%, which researchers suspect is a process designed to divert limited resources to egg production.
In this study, Penick and his team experimentally induced gamergates to return to their original normal worker status – to assess whether the physiological and behavioural changes were reversible, they wrote in the Royal Society’s journal Proceedings B.
Using a sample of 30 colonies, the researchers marked two mature reproductive workers from each colony. One from each pair was left to isolate for three to four weeks in a plastic box and fed periodically, while the other remained in its nest.
The researchers hypothesised that the lack of social interaction and care would reduce the isolated gamergate back to worker status when reintroduced to its former nest. Sure enough, within a day or two those gamergate’s were no longer producing eggs and over the course of several weeks they started displaying normal worker-like behaviour, Penick said.
Roughly six to eight weeks later, Penick was left with the unenviable task of dissecting the small insects to check whether their internal organs had reverted to ordinary worker proportions – which they did.
“It opens up opportunities now to dig into the mechanisms that control whether a brain region grows or shrinks in size,” he said.

Orcas are incredibly smart and actually like to interact with humans.
I am well aware of an increasing number of orca attacks against boats around the coast off Portugal (and other places), but I believe there must be a very good reason for that which we haven't been able to understand yet.
When left alone and at peace, orcas are not like that.
Here's a short clip showing an inquisitive orca interacting with and blowing bubbles at a kneeboarder:

'Someone pinch me, I must be dreaming! I had just finished eating lunch on my patio this morning, when I heard the juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk calling from the nearby pine tree. Then I saw a small bird fly onto a branch very close to the hawk. I grabbed my camera and could hardly believe what I saw: the Hawk staring at a male House Finch almost beak-to-beak. I would say there was 6-8 inches between them. They stayed in companionable silence for around 4 minutes, obviously interested in each other. Nature never ceases to amaze!

There have been studies done that surmise that people who grow up in an environment with animals (pets) are far less prone to crime or abuse than those who do not grow up with animals / pets. I'd believe it...100%.

Great story and but not behaviour one would expect from a great white:
'Australian fisherman Arnold Pointer saved a female white shark from death two years ago, liberating from the net. He has one problem today - the shark follows him everywhere!
Arnold says: ′′ As soon as I stop the boat, she comes to me, turns on my back and let me scratch her belly and neck, while she, as a cat rolls her eyes, smoothly rocks and wags her tail, moves the fins ".'

Recent studies conducted by the Institute of HeartMath provide a clue to explain the bidirectional "healing" that happens when we are near horses. According to researchers, the heart has a larger electromagnetic field and higher level of intelligence than the brain: A magnetometer can measure the heart's energy field radiating up to 8 to 10 feet around the human body. While this is certainly significant it is perhaps more impressive that the electromagnetic field projected by the horse's heart is five times larger than the human one (imagine a sphere-shaped field that completely surrounds you). The horse's electromagnetic field is also stronger than ours and can actually directly influence our own heart rhythm!
Horses are also likely to have what science has identified as a "coherent" heart rhythm (heart rate pattern) which explains why we may "feel better" when we are around them. . . .studies have found that a coherent heart pattern or HRV is a robust measure of well-being and consistent with emotional states of calm and joy--that is, we exhibit such patterns when we feel positive emotions.
A coherent heart pattern is indicative of a system that can recover and adjust to stressful situations very efficiently. Often times, we only need to be in a horses presence to feel a sense of wellness and peace. In fact, research shows that people experience many physiological benefits while interacting with horses, including lowered blood pressure and heart rate, increased levels of beta-endorphins (neurotransmitters that serve as pain surppressors), decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning; and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-efficacy."

Scientists name frog found in Ecuadorian Andes after Led Zeppelin
17 June, 2021
Researchers in the misty mountains of the Ecuadorian Andes have discovered a new species of terrestrial frog and named it after the pioneering British rock band Led Zeppelin.
Pristimantis ledzeppelin, known in English as Led Zeppelin’s Rain Frog, was found by the scientists David Brito-Zapata and Carolina Reyes-Puig in the Cordillera del Cóndor, which straddles south-east Ecuador and north-east Peru.
“The name honours Led Zeppelin and their extraordinary music,” the pair explain in the Neotropical Biodiversity journal (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/23766808.2021.1940048).

Dolphins alert rescuers to lost swimmer
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-58328587?fbclid=IwAR23WcHdMHdH8ZczGpm-2nOmIFapr3ZMrsvUDS9R0uVWRUdGvlLQuwbjOvQ
A swimmer missing for almost 12 hours off the Irish coast was rescued after a lifeboat crew's attention was drawn to a pod of dolphins.
The RNLI volunteers spotted the exhausted man among the dolphins in the sea near Castlegregory in County Kerry.
Conservationists have now identified the animals as being from a population of bottlenose dolphins that feed and breed in Scotland's Moray Firth.
The rescue was sparked by the discovery of the swimmer's clothes on a beach.
The RNLI and coastguard teams carried out a search into Sunday night.
The RNLI said: "At 20:30, the volunteer lifeboat crew with Fenit RNLI spotted a pod of dolphins and a head above the water about two-and-a-half miles off Castlegregory beach.
"The casualty was conscious and immediately recovered onto the lifeboat and brought Fenit Harbour to be taken to hospital."
The dolphins have been seen off the Irish coast since 2019.
The Irish Whale and Dolphin Group confirmed the identity of Sunday's dolphins as the same animals. Scientists and conservationists can identify individual dolphins by the shape and markings on their dorsal fins.
The wayward Scottish group had included a dolphin known to scientists as Spirtle, who survived being badly sunburned while stranded on mudflats in the Cromarty Firth in 2016. After appearing off Ireland, she later returned to the Moray Firth where this month was spotted with her new-born calf.

My spouse said something was wrong with this owl. She has petted dazed birds when they flew into our windows, sometimes they recovered, sometimes not.
So I went to the unembedded version for full description - bottom line, spouse right again.
A week ago, when I was picking mushrooms in Slovenian woods, I saw large owl sitting on a dead tree. She wasnt scared of me, so I come closer and I started to cuddle her. It was so cute. But something was wrong with her. I picked her up and we went to the vetenarian, who saw that she has broken both wings. Yesterday they operate her, and by 4 months they will release her to the wild. The vet said that this owl is named slovenian "Kozač" (Strix uralensis) and are only 600 couples leaving in Slovenia. Please do not kill owls, they are so cute and harmless....Thanks
If you want, you can donate on paypal account dzezvick25@gmail.com or BitCoin on adress 14Z8dzvVCcgW6Pm8qDMW5LjzsTtbX5y5vN and all donations will go for rescuing center for wild animals in Slovenia. My next movie will show the visit of animal hospital where they threated this beautiful owl. Thank you

Messi The Puma is a Big Ol’ House Cat

"Meet Messi the Puma, now unlike most big cats that exist in the wild or in zoos, this big cat, lives in a 1 bedroom apartment in Russia.
Messi was born in captivity at a zoo in Russia, but suffered from various health problems at just three months old. During his stay at the zoo, Messi was kept in a very small enclosure and was malnourished, which caused him to develop muscle weakness, rickets which is a degenerative bone disease and a urinary tract infection.
The zoo decided that because pumas were not native to Russia, they could not simply release it into the wild, and because of it’s illnesses, that prevented him from living in another zoo or animal sanctuary. So they had planned to euthanize him.
A couple by the name of Aleksandr and Mariya Dmitriev, heard about the sickly cub, and after talking with other puma breeders and learning everything about the maintenance and care of the animal, they took a leap of faith and approached the zoo about adopting it. And to their surprise, the zoo agreed!
Fun Fact: Despite their large size, cougars are actually more closely related to house cats than they are to other large cat species like jaguars and tigers.
Cougars, also commonly referred to as puma or mountain lion, and are members of the Felidae family.
Pumas are native to the Americas, and they are the largest feline species on these continents, with males being up to 2.4 m (7.9 ft) long from head to tail and weighing up to 100 kg (220 lb).Messi is unlike most cougars, he is about half the size of a normal adult male because of his health conditions. The owners also point out that he is very gentle and loving.
Thanks for watching."

The above picture with the polar bear reminds me of a time I was leaning over to fix something and two baby raccoons started climbing my legs. Happily I had long sturdy jeans on. Mama raccoon was looking up and asking for a treat so I waddled in the open door with babies still clinging and grabbed an egg and waddled out and held it out to her. She took it in her paws and enjoyed her snack. I also put out some cat crunchies for the babies. Everyone happy.

Whales are my favourite.
Sadly though when I lived for a year in a small town of 400 people in Strahan, Tasmania, I had the gut wrenching experience of witnessing over 60 beached whales struggle to survive. Everyone was on the beach with the wildlife experts trying to help.
Our efforts of tipping buckets of water over them seemed futile. Loving and stroking them as they died, especially the bubbies, was the best we could do.

'DIVING WITH SPERM WHALES CAN BE PAINFUL OR DEADLY
SPERM WHALES’ CLICKS ARE POWERFUL ENOUGH TO PENETRATE AND VIBRATE YOUR ENTIRE BODY TO DEATH.
Sperm whales are amazing in so many ways. They are very powerful and feed at depths on squid that can be as large as they are. Yet, they appear so docile, trusting and friendly around divers.
In fact, the only way to get near them is by freediving. This is because they tend to flee the noises generated by scuba equipment as well as subs and robots.
Sperm whales are also extremely loud. They are known to be the loudest animal on the planet. Divers described their sounds to be flesh penetrating.
A sperm whale’s clicks are powerful enough for them to communicate with other sperm whales thousands of miles away. They are also powerful enough to easily blow out a divers eardrums or vibrate a diver to death.
In fact, as explained in the video below, divers have been known to report the side effects of these powerful clicks. The include partial paralysis as well as general body heating.
While normal human speech takes place between 60 and 65 decibels (dB), sperm whale clicks, described as such because we hear them as “tak-tak-tak”, can reach as high as 235dB. In contrast, a loud rock concert is around 115dB and the sound of a jet engine is roughly 140dB. Quite simply, sperm whales are the loudest animals on the planet.
Such is the power of their clicks that whales can comfortably transmit information to others from hundreds of miles away, and even across vast oceans. A sound of 180dB is enough to cause drastic cell death in your ears, but the most powerful sperm whale clicks will not merely deafen you: they can vibrate the fragile human body to pieces.'

'With many of Africa’s key species, including elephants, heading toward extinction, Akashinga is a radical, new and highly effective weapon against poaching. Founded in Zimbabwe by former Australian special forces soldier and anti-poaching leader Damien Mander, the women-only team of rangers is revolutionizing the way animals are protected, communities are empowered — and its members’ own lives are being transformed. Mander’s innovative approach to conservation calls for community buy-in rather than full-on armed assault against poachers: If a community understands the economic benefits of preserving animals, then it will eliminate poaching without an armed struggle. Executive produced by three-time Academy Award winner James Cameron and directed by Maria Wilhelm, AKASHINGA: THE BRAVE ONES is a celebration of the courage, conservation and unorthodox thinking that’s leading to massive positive change.'

I have to leap to the defense of animals--rats in particular in this case.
Bill wrote (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?117391-How-stressed-people-can-turn-on-one-another&p=1474072&viewfull=1#post1474072): "Rats cannot feel empathy for another rat that is suffering, in whatever way."
I disagree.
Animals often show empathy for each other, and for humans as well.
We have lots of demonstrations of that on display on the Animals are Magical thread.
Case in point: I took belly dance classes for 5 years and lived with my teacher Youkta and her husband as their Girl Friday for over one year.
In class, we sometimes danced with Youkta's 2 pet boa constrictors, which was actually quite a sensual and lovely experience.
One of my tasks was to care for the domesticated rats that were bred and kept in cages for the purpose of feeding the snakes (they will only eat live prey).
One of the male rats ( I can't remember his name now, but I will call him Fred) was often used to sire new litters, because he cared so well for his mates and offspring.
One day I had taken the cages out to the back yard to clean them, and there was a sudden and unexpected rainstorm.
I had to hurry and get the cages back indoors so the rats wouldn't get drenched, but I left the cage with Fred and family for last.
Because I saw that Fred had positioned himself in such a way that he was able to use his body to shelter his family from the rain.
He remained in that uncomfortable position, with his claws wrapped around the bars of the cage to keep himself in an elevated, spread-eagle position over the other rats, until the cage was safely out of the rain.
Then he checked on each family member to make sure they were all OK.
Animals are under appreciated and underestimated; they don't commit nearly as many horrendous deeds as humans do.
We humans don't really stand up all that well in comparison.
Perhaps even reptiles can feel empathy...

Kryztian, One time many years ago I was with a friend in Minneapolis. We parked in a lot outside her work, and in the tree right in front of us were at least 50 Cedar Waxwings. We sat and watched for quite a while - it is still a treasured memory. Your photo is so beautiful.

'A dog thought to have the world's longest nose has become a social media sensation due to her unusual looks. Eris, a borzoi, was adopted as a puppy by owner Lily Kambourian, 27, in 2018. At the time, it was apparent she 'might have an overbite' but her nose has now grown to be 12.2 inches long.
Borzoi, breed of hound dog developed in Russia to pursue wolves. It is descended from the Arabian greyhound and a collielike Russian sheepdog. The borzoi—formerly known as the Russian wolfhound—is a graceful, strong, and swift dog'

Waxwings are indeed one of the most stunning birds to behold. I don't think I've ever seen one for real, but here is a Cedar Waxwing image I just found.
