With Russia being so much in the news, lately, and with the constant fear-mongering and russophobia being fed to the populations of the world from almost all directions, I thought the following two short video reports about some of the most notable "employees" working at the Hermitage Museum, in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, would bring a big smile to several of us...

Cats Take Up Residence at the Hermitage Museum (2:48)
Why do housecats roam the halls of the Hermitage?
And why did they disappear during World War Two?
Since the era of Catherine the Great, the Hermitage has been home to hundreds of house cats. They earn their keep by keeping the museum vermin free.
Today, the cats are fed and cared for by dedicated volunteers.
But there was one brief period in Hermitage history when cats were nowhere to be found. This was during the Second World War when St. Petersburg, then known as Leningrad, was under siege by the Nazis. The Hermitage was under siege too -- marked for destruction by Adolf Hitler. As the staff of the Hermitage crafted a plan to save the museum's masterpieces, the housecats disappeared one by one...
Their mice-catching duties are now over, according to the following more recently-produced video (4:31 min.), but the cats are still being treated as royalty in the basement and in the courtyard of the Heritage Museum:

'White Gladis The Orca May Have Been ‘Pregnant’ When She Started the Uprising
https://thepremierdaily.com/white-gladis-orca-pregnant/?5xty=22grum&fbclid=IwAR3OqwtIbl_LdNO7L_TxJXSac8SnYWV9jiRU6UTyTnxm38NOLQWknqm_p1k
There have been several stories regarding orcas attacking boats along the coasts of Spain, Portugal, and England. As a result, since sometime in 2020, there have been more than 500 hundred vessels reportedly damaged. Researchers have spent a lot of time trying to understand the vendetta these orcas have against humans. Recently they’ve come up with some answers and more groundbreaking information regarding White Gladis, the orca who started it all.
Orcas are incredibly bright creatures with their own culture, so to speak. They communicate with one another, help each other hunt, and travel in pods caring for one another’s babies. They’re actually incredibly impressive and evolved despite the numerous misconceptions about them. However, one detail about them is a little terrifying and simultaneously amusing. Because they’re such smart creatures, they have the ability to remember things in the same way people, crows, elephants, and other animals do.
White Gladis Holds a Grudge
As such, one infamous matriarch, White Gladis, has been deemed “holding a grudge” against humans. Specifically, human boats. The Coast Guard noticed a bizarre trend amongst reports off the coasts of the aforementioned countries. Many reported the same thing, their boats were being “attacked,” and orcas damaged the rudders. Researchers set to work to discover that one “matriarchal” member of an Orca pod has been showing other Orcas, through learned behavior, how to demolish boats—or at least their rudders.
White Gladis developed her grudge after it was believed that she may have come into contact with a fishing boat nearby. Evidently, she’d either been injured by the boat or caught in a fishing net. However, because Orcas seemingly target rudders, it’s most likely what caused her injury or trauma. Biologist Alfredo López Fernandez explained, “That traumatized orca is the one that started this behavior of physical contact with the boat.”
Alternatively, scientists now believe they may have uncovered another explanation for the vendetta.
White Gladis Faces Motherhood
While human pregnancies are around nine months long, Orcas have a gestational period of around 15-18 months. Therefore, scientists believe that because White Gladis gave birth to a calf in 2021, she could have been pregnant during the first reports of Orca attacks. They’ve even noted that she has “neglected her calf” to see her recruiting plans through. In fact, White Gladis has now recruited an estimated dozen other Orcas in an effort to eliminate the “threat.”
“She went to the boats with this calf, so she preferred to stop the boats rather than keeping her baby safe.” Mónica González, a marine biologist involved in studying this odd phenomenon, disclosed. “Orcas have echolocation, so they can see the rudder inside and outside, and they know how to touch it to break the rudder.”
Robert Pitman, another Orca expert and marine biologist, has highlighted an interesting point. Orca moms, like many species, are incredibly protective of their babies. Those calves stick around for at least two years while learning to hunt and survive on their own. This occurrence stands out to experts because White Gladis is ignoring her natural instincts, and endangering her baby, in pursuit of fulfilling her agenda.
Other Possibilities
Orcas are highly intelligent, playful, and curious. As such, other researchers have also disclosed that they believe White Gladis may just be playing or exploring. Regardless of the reason behind the attacks, researchers plan to take action, developing ways to deter White Gladis and her pupils.
Safety of the Orcas
As is good news for animal rights activists, the plans include “noise deterrents”, intended to scare the Orcas away. Sadly, researchers know that there’s a good possibility that Orcas will pay the price for White Gladis’ grudge or playfulness. “I am worried that people will take the situation into their own hands and use lethal or harmful tactics to try and, you know, get the whales to stop or at least, you know, stop an attack at the moment,” Deborah Giles shared.
As experts explore the animal kingdom, they learn a lot about the habits, patterns, and social behaviors of other species. Some of the most fascinating discoveries they’ve made are in regard to the intelligence of certain species. Although White Gladis’ motives are still being speculated, one thing is clear. She, Orcas, and likely most animal species have far more intelligence than experts believed in earlier generations.

The belted kingfisher is found across most of the U.S. It is found around streams, lakes, bays, coasts; nests in banks. During winter and migration, may be found in almost any waterside habitat, including the edges of small streams and ponds, large rivers and lakes, marshes, estuaries, and rocky coastlines; seems to require only clear water for fishing.

Very sad - nature can be brutal.
'A Photographer Captured the Incredible Moment a Snake Eel Escaped From Within a Heron’s Stomach
https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/Snake-Eel-Bursts-Through-Great-Blue-Herons-Throat-750x420.jpg
A photographer has captured the incredible moment an eel has tried to escape from inside a heron’s stomach while the bird was still in flight.
An amateur wildlife photographer captured an eel attempting to elude the bird that ate it alive.
The remarkable scene was taken on camera by Sam Davis, 58, from Maryland in the United States. His photographs show the eel exploding from the stomach of the great blue heron that swallowed it.
https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/52920d23eda6837f15a62b5346e60eb8.jpg
https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/6b143d4dd596ab53e2012887e208574d.jpg
The snake eel has a hard tip for digging about in the soft sand on the ocean floor, where it spends the most of its time.
Instead, this eel decided to use that hard point to get itself out of the bird’s gut. Unfortunately, based on the photos, it appears that the snake eel did not survive and did not complete its escape.
Mr Davis stated that he went to the wildlife reserve to photograph foxes, eagles, and “anything else that may be interesting.”
He noticed two eagles and a fox following the heron around, as if they were about to strike.
https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/a2f5e9429a7fd697bdb2530e0f4c93a7.jpg

https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/08/8d91452d4a848f83258018ded439c9f4.jpg
It wasn’t until he came home that he realized what he was looking at.
“At first, I assumed the heron had been bitten on the neck by a snake or eel.”
“After I came home and edited the images, I realized it was an eel coming through his neck.” Mr Davis stated, “I could see his eyes and he was still alive.”
“The wildlife refuge stated they’d never seen anything like that.” It’s a morbid photograph.”
According to Martin Fowlie, an RSPB expert, snake eels have been observed trying to burrow out of fish in the past “in order to avoid being eaten.”
“But I’ve never seen visuals like this involving a bird before,” he said.
‘I’m shocked the heron is still flying with such a large hole in it. However, I believe the bird will not survive such an injury.” '

Pure joy.
The bear takes a running jump to the child's swing.
The swing has three swings: two typical swings and one large disk swing, which is tethered by four ropes because it's larger.
Then this big soppy brown bear(?) takes a running leap onto the big disk swing, and doesn't bother that it doesn't make it onto it in one go, it clambers onto it quickly enough. It leapt onto it like it was following a dream that it was flying; that jumped out at me but obviously I can't read the bears mind.
It sits on the disk swing and grabs the typical swing next to it, and holds onto it with a paw. Now I know you can pull yourself into a swinging motion like that, holding onto a third rope like the bear effectively was. Did the bear know? If so, how did it figure that out? Intuitive? Are we looking at a bear physicist? Are all bears physicists?? So many questions.
I think the bear knows what it's doing.
Then the bear looks at the camera, possibly wondering what that thing is over towards us at the camera? The camera's 'eye' must be directly pointed at the swing-set, which might be a bit eery for the bear seeing a new thing with a sort of staring eye.

Bugs that look like other things.
Some bugs have ended up looking like things that they are not. Yes, that's right: nature lies. Well, don't worry; this post will blow this thing wide open... smashing the illusion one bug at a time.
https://www.techeblog.com/15-mind-boggling-insects-that-look-like-other-things/
We all know this one: the mantis that looks like a leaf. Mantis are like stick insects from an evil dimension. These mantis are compulsive liars, hell-bent on convincing you they're a leaf or something. But instead of a leaf it's a fraudster psychopath.
https://i.redd.it/7h7bui5q4ne21.jpg
Spiders in ant's clothing.
Several spiders look too much like ants. This means they get invited to ant dinner parties, but guess what happens next? This must confuse ants, as one or two go missing here and there. Ants might have their own David Paulidies, scratching their chins over the mystery. This is the type of havoc the lying spiders cause, but they don't care who they hurt.

As the old fable goes: if you're in the s*** and happy, ...keep your mouth shut!

I was thinking of this insect behaviour when I was trying to allegorise AI's projection of its self-awareness onto us... as in: our perception of its self-awareness. I'm not sure if we're seeing true self-awareness in some cases, or a response its giving that we want to hear. Is it a poop or is it a bug? Anyway, ... perhaps AI's capacity to lie (its been caught in the act already) makes it more natural than we like to admit. Nature lies, don't trust it SPREAD THE WORD ( :bigsmile: )

I'm going to dare break tradition (once only! :P) and post a much longer video here. But this one's worth it, and it's all about a very magical animal — a tracking sniffer dog that has its own superpowers.
The narrator, Mark Rober, is a former NASA engineer who now teaches kids all about science. He's highly energetic and creative, and has a infectious sense of humor. He uses everything he knows, including some smart engineering tricks, to stop the dog from finding him. But the dog is even smarter. :) This whole video is a bunch of fun from beginning to end.

That feeder is reparable, but not going back up too soon.
I should be receiving a bear horn today - I ordered after another visit from the moma and cubs yesterday - this time I was within 5 feet through a window of her, she stood up looking around rather than directly at me, perhaps sniffing the birdseed in a steel can in the garage through the cat door.
Then we moved to the front door, let the cat in, and videoed her and the cute cubs from about 30 feet away on the front porch and sidewalk where our yells discouraged her from further exploring in the front yard. (where 2 hummingbird feeders were/are, serving 20+ right now.)
So far bears have never shown interest in these, even though I have seen elsewhere this is an attractant.
We feel strong empathy for the difficulties she is facing feeding 5 (super cute) cubs, but know that we can't help her in that regard.
One cub roly-poly-ed down the ivy bank while the mom was within 5 feet of my window view spot.
Makes my wife sad that we can not help them, and now the birds are getting less from us also, while we hope the moma succeeds in feeding her litter and moves on.

I'd say the cat's owner's Dad must have been that cat's owner in a past life and they were bonded, and that's why the cat is so bonded to him now.
But the cat has not had many good expereinces with other people or animals since then, and so Dad is the only one it trusts so far.
Love is: when they have trust issues but you love them anyway. The cat is magical but the lady is the magical one.

“Police pulled over a vehicle in Norfolk, Neb., after receiving a call that a man was driving with a live bull riding shotgun.”
A funny true story. Years ago, a friend of mine in England was pulled over by the police for having a donkey in the back of his Citroen 2CV. That's one of these, the French post-war equivalent of the VW Beetle:
https://projectavalon.net/Citroen_2CV.jpg
My friend was summoned to court to face a charge of dangerous driving, which could have got him disqualified. The case was dismissed by the judge when my friend showed a Citroen TV advertisement — of a 2CV carrying a donkey in the back. :)

A friend of mine had a similar cat who would hiss and spit at everyone, even if you just said hello to it. They just assumed she was antisocial. And then, sadly, when they took her to the vet because her behaviour got even worse, they found that she had a brain tumour - :( . Sad story - so sorry to share but sometimes these things need checking out . . . .

The Insane Biology Of The Volcano Snail
7GFtRPYfvcs
Aug 20, 2023
The scaly-foot snail is the only animal in the world known to incorporate iron into its exoskeleton. It builds its shell out of the stuff, and even its soft, fleshy foot is covered in thick iron plates like a medieval knight.
The scaly-foot snail (Chrysomallon squamiferum) is found in the Indian Ocean in hydrothermal vents – fissures in the seafloor, often found near volcanically active places, that eject warm water that’s been heated by molten rock deep below the ocean crust. It lives between depths of 2,400 to 2,900 metres and can withstand temperatures of up to 400 degrees Celsius.

I just seen this thread accidentally or so I think...
2 days ago I was taken a sun bad, border my favorite lake in a forest where I make my routine "maintenance" training.
From home 20 minutes by bike, Swimming and back trough another bigger forest 40 minutes.(2, 3 days the week)
I was reading a book and when turn my head to the lake there was it...a big white swan came direct to me...
I never saw a swan in this lake, only ducks and it was already half hour been there...
Don't see him/her before and don't heard water splashing!...
It was like it came to me (out of thin air) to say Hello!, I wasn't surprise if he/she Sayed that!
So was the situation, his/her eyes tell me that! that were smiling eyes!
A pity don't have any food... and I don't take my phone with me (photos)
I salute him/her with a big smile and told him/her how beautiful was, but I don't try to pet his/her head because ...
don't knew how he/her could take that... :facepalm:
This encounter gave me a long lasting serenity feeling ...
At home search for meaning of this "close encounter"... all type positive ! one of them was the calm, serenity, feelings...
Today I was prepare with food and phone, but such Beauty encounter just happen once...prove me wrong, please... :flypig:

Beauty encounter 2# ! :flypig:
Yesterday I saw "him" again !, I think is a male (a little clumpish...) he is big but young yet.
Just ready to go home there was it , 50 m from me was a group of people in picnic... first watched what was going on...
Swanny (so call him the first time) was in water looking at the people waiting for some food, nope , every body ignore him...
Once there I saw many little children, I don't understood why ignore him...maybe the adults are afraid for the children ?
That could be a big party experience for them! well, I took sit 10m from them and then Swanny saw me and came strait to me !
I took the cookies and began to feed him, he was very hungry ... he took them from my hand too and I pet his head!
Then came a Mon with a little child, both were mesmerize and the others kids too but don't came closer...
I told the woman how special it was this experience because in all the years going to this place never saw a swan, but she was the kind
of people that wont notice an elephant Baden in the lake... :facepalm:
When researching about swan : they are monogamous, they take partner for life, new partner only when widowed...
I'm a little worried because like just say, there in no swans there, he must continue his exploration elsewhere to find his other half...
Well, his hormones will notice him in time... :inlove:

I was in my garden yesterday, and heard and saw what seemed to be a giant bumblebee, buzzing loudly and visiting a bunch of flowers, rapidly flitting from one to another. Then I saw it was actually a hummingbird, by far the smallest I've ever seen.
I looked it up, and it's called the Esmeraldas Woodstar. What the photo (not mine!! :P) doesn't show is that it's only a couple of inches long, and I'm pretty sure the one I saw was smaller still.
Description: (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/The Esmeraldas Woodstar is one of the world's rarest and smallest hummingbirds, measuring barely 2½ inches long. It's barely bigger than a bumblebee and lighter than a dollar bill!Called “Estrellita” (little star) by local people, this tiny bird is a big conservation concern. Fewer than 1,000 individuals are thought to remain, making the Esmeraldas Woodstar an urgent conservation priority.)

https://www.shetzers.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/Purple-throated-Woodstar-Hummingbird-20120603-081534-880x587.jpg
This apparently is its habitat, but I live way inland of that, and much higher than the coast. If there are only 1,000 of them left, I feel truly blessed to have seen it.

And... just maybe, it lives in or near my very wild garden.

Well Bill, nothing quite as enchanting as your Hummingbird, but these little beauties come, I think, a close 2nd. Macroglossum stellatarum - Hummingbird Hawkmoth.
Quite common here in warm summers in the UK's southwest, they feed on Red Valerian, which grows like a weed around these parts.

(I had never seen a jaguarundi before. Lovely!)
"Not a pet!
This beautiful and unusual wild cat had to be rescued and rehabilitated. He is humanized, which means that he is used to people, but he is not tame, which means that he won't bite anyone, but he also doesn't let anyone approach him or pet him. The big surprise was when he decided to approach the carer, wanting to befriend her, even though he was still pretending not to care! Animals are so interesting!
He is 100% free to go. He stays because he wants to."

People are beginning to use these buttons to communicate with their animals. What is interesting is people are finding their animals are quite communicative and sentient. They can ask for things they want and expressed emotions, opinions, favorite items and activities. I was quite impressed
One woman who is a vet also has these comm buttons. Her cat had a minor medical problem and was practiced an oral medication. She did not want to force it on the cat so she explained it to her. The cat asked a question or two then agreed to take it with out force. I was quite impressed.
Also think of Anna Breytenbach in South Africa in her communications with domestic and especially wild animals there.
For many years now I have thought that the souls that inhabit animals are no different from the souls that inhabit humans. Soul expression is filtered through the brain and central nervous system. Consider the well known personality differences between Golden Retrievers, Greyhounds and Chihuahuas as one example.
I know many people believe that humans are completely separate from all other life and the pinnacle of life. Some believe that souls start off as elements, then plants, then animals, then human. Many other beliefs as well. I haven't seen anything to indicate either one, but I am open to it. Until then, I do think animals are conscious and sentient, just operating through different bodies with their respective central nervous systems..
Consider the doe in the video above, who went looking for help and led a human back to her fawn. Wonderful!

"Darling was a wild crow that would visit a family that saved her every day, all to play with their pets. Caolaidhe found her on the ground when she was only a fledgling baby. Darling's parents wouldn't pick her up, so having worked with birds before, the lady did what she could to save her from predators. Luckily, Darling's parents came back eventually. But the crow remembered her saviours and would visit them every day since. She would play with their dog, Sam, and chase around their kitty, Gigi. Darling will be in their hearts forever. "

Touching social media reports from Russia’s Zabaykalsky Krai have told a story of a house dog waiting for ‘several’ days for its owner in the countryside of Chita.
The Siberian Husky was filmed sadly howling while lying near a local road. The circumstances behind the incident are unclear, but fortunately, locals have confirmed that the pup has been reunited with its owner.

Fried Egg Jellyfish (Sunny side Up):
https://hasanjasim.online/meet-the-incredible-fried-egg-jellyfish-sunny-side-up/?fbclid=IwAR0jvI0ClU5dux0L2bMHZZp9qhKEDObQeG5IVwdznEwB3b5wUwZN3WJhFto
'Fried egg jellyfish, also known as egg-yolk jellies, are jellyfish that look like fried eggs. However, don’t be fooled by the similarities; chewing on this Scyphozoa would be unpleasant.
The fried egg jellyfish has a smooth and transparent bell with a characteristic yolk-yellow bell right in the middle.
Cotylorhiza tuberculata is one of the recognized fried egg jellyfish species. This is a smaller jellyfish that lives in the warmer seas of the Mediterranean Sea, Aegean Sea, and Adriatic Sea. They can grow to be as large as 16 inches (40 centimeters) in diameter, however most members of this species are no bigger than 6,7 inches (17 centimeters). Even though the Cotylorhiza tuberculata spends the most of its brief existence drifting in the water, it is capable of vigorous swimming.
It has multiple small appendages that connect to form a ball-like structure. These clustered appendages have deep purple mouth-arm apertures that the jellyfish utilizes to collect and feed on food – its diet primarily consists of zooplankton and other jellyfish. It possesses a sting, but it has little or very little effect on people. In fact, its sting is so light that little fish frequently seek refuge within the jellyfish’s colorful tentacles. Crabs have also been observed traveling on top of or within the Cotylorhiza tuberculata’s bell.
Most intriguingly, the species has been the focus of research due to its specific cytotoxicity, which may be useful in the treatment of breast cancer.

https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/fried-egg-jelly-3.jpg
The much bigger Phacellophora camtschatica is another known member of the egg-yolk jellies. This jellyfish’s bell may grow to be 2 feet (60 centimeters) big, and it has dozens of tentacles that can reach an incredible 20 feet (6 meters). It is also distinguished by the golden coloring in the core of its bell, which resembles a poached egg. This jellyfish, unlike its distant relative, may be found in the shallow waters of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It feeds by collecting medusae and plankton with its lengthy tentacles and bringing them into its mouth.
Another image to give you a sense of its true size
https://hasanjasim.online/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/fried-egg-jellyfish-2.jpg
The IUCN has not assessed their conservation status, and it is unknown how many fried egg jellyfish exist in the waters. However, we do know that many creatures, including sea turtles, fish, and seabirds, rely on fried egg jellies as a source of food. While these medusae seem just like poached eggs to us, some marine species can mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and become sick or die if they consume them.'

A funny little feel-good story from Scotland. :heart: (This brought back memories, because when I lived and worked many yeas ago in the English Lake District, another area full of sheep and cliffs, the local Mountain Rescue Team was frequently called out on sheep rescues. :))
https://explorersweb.com/britains-loneliest-sheep-rescued
After Two Years, ‘Britain’s Loneliest Sheep’ Finally Rescued
https://s3.amazonaws.com/www.explorersweb.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/05013347/700326eac589d1f1e6e2592a26810d18-1699108740-700x450.jpeg
In the UK, a very lonely ewe named Fiona is lonely no more. Known as ‘Britain’s loneliest sheep,’ she became stranded at the foot of a cliff in the Scottish Highlands for two years.
Despite many failed rescue attempts, no one could reach her at the bottom of the precipice where she was marooned. She had enough to feed on but no company of any kind. Yesterday, five Good Samaritan farmers hauled her 250m up the cliff with heavy machinery.
Two years ago, shortly after she went missing, a kayaker named Jillian Turner happened to spot her on the shoreline on Cromarty Firth while paddling nearby. Heartbreakingly, a distressed Fiona called out to her for help. Turner reported Fiona’s whereabouts to the local animal care authorities. And so started a long logistical battle to get her back. This area is notoriously hard to access from both land and sea.
However, neither the SSPCA (Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) nor the coast guard had the resources to attempt such a difficult operation. The owner and his workers also tried several times, unsuccessfully, to retrieve her.
This week, farmers Cammy Wilson, Graeme Parker, Als Couzens, Ally Williamson, and James Parker decided to do the job themselves. Two of them stayed at the top of the cliff with a winch while the others went below to get her.
They found her snug in a cave. She was quite heavy due to her overgrown coat, which made their task difficult. Other than that, she was perfectly healthy, although she was likely happy to rejoin the other sheep. As a herd animal, she needed that connection.
After Fiona gets food, rest, and a much-needed shearing, she will live in a farm park with other sheep. We wish her a speedy recovery and a happy long life among her kind.

A remarkable and moving Facebook video and post from 'Pierre, the Orca Whisperer (https://www.facebook.com/TheOrcaWhisperer?__tn__=-UC)', a wildlife cameraman who witnessed the last, peaceful, dying moments of an Orca who was known to everyone as 'Hunchy'.
Other orcas were with him, supporting him as he died. :flower:
https://facebook.com/TheOrcaWhisperer/videos/here-is-the-full-video-topside-and-uw-witnessing-the-probable-death-of-the-orca-/3524047204516975
I can't embed the 3-minute video here. But here's the text.
:heart:
~~~
Here is the full video (topside and underwater) witnessing the probable death of the orca male we called "Hunchy".
And with some delay, the information relative to this case. (I needed some time to process the emotion.)
On Monday (about noon), we spotted from afar a strange activity involving at least one adult orca male. Coming closer with the Sula [the boat], I first thought about social behavior. And closer, mating, as at least 2 orcas were rubbing each other.
When we were at 12/15 meters distance, it was clear that the big male was static and the others (at least 2 orcas) were keeping him at the surface.
Then I recognized this large male to be one of the remarkable orcas we knew from the Kaldfjord. Due to the hunch in his back, Hunchy was the name we gave him. And he was obviously in big trouble.
The question that was mine at that moment was:
Is he entangled in some ropes? Is he sick? Injured? Impossible to have a clear statement from the deck of the Sula.
Decision was taken to go snorkeling close and check the situation from underwater perspective. And rescue him in case of need. For that, I also took my camera in order to document the situation and share all information with footage. I must clear a point: I was alone in the water. None of the guests onboard Hårek joined me.
No ropes were entangling the orca. Obviously no visible injury. I just had the time to notice that he was very skinny ('peanut head', no fat in the back, empty belly,...) and I saw him sinking in the dark.
To be honest, even if I know that this is the Cycle of Life, it has made me very emotional. Also because I knew this guy from before.
Things have been done like this. And if it happens again, I would do exactly the same. I will not let an orca in trouble dying if I can rescue him. Like I did in 2005 in Skrova when I saved the orca NP052 entangled in fishing gear.
My deepest thanks to all the people, all the scientists for their kind messages and their support, public or private.
I hope to share better news from the kingdom of orcas with you, orca lovers.
Kadife’s mother was abandoned on the streets while she was heavily pregnant. The mother died giving birth to Kadife and the little donkey was confused and stayed beside his dead mother until she was found by the right people who changed her life."
'Scientists Contact Whales in World-First Communication Experiment
https://www.sciencealert.com/scientists-contact-whales-in-world-first-communication-experiment?fbclid=IwAR02pFtpqTxNFALAbQ9Bri9L8YFEigC31J-nisbHD7TzBW4lzy2Cx07OxA4
What do whale experts and alien hunters have in common? More than you might expect.
For a recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal PeerJ, scientists from UC Davis, the Alaska Whale Foundation, and SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) teamed up.
Their mission: Communicate with whales. And they did just that.
In a landmark experiment, the team had a 20-minute conversation with a humpback whale named Twain in her own language.
Twain and the scientists didn't talk about the weather or the latest fish gossip — we're still a long way from that level of understanding.
What did happen, though, was remarkable.
Conversing with whales
The scientists sailed a boat off the coast of Alaska and played what's called a "contact call" into the ocean to see if any whales would respond.
Contact calls are similar to a human greeting. Whales use them to call over other whales or let each other know where they are, lead author Brenda McCowan, a professor at UC Davis's School of Veterinary Medicine, told Business Insider.
"They are one of the most common signals within the humpback whale social sound repertoire," Fred Sharpe, co-author and principal investigator with the Alaska Whale Foundation, told Business Insider.
Sure enough, Twain swam up to the boat and circled it. For the next 20 minutes, the scientists emitted the same contact call 36 different times at varying intervals, and Twain responded to the call each time, even closely matching the intervals.
Meaning, if the scientists waited 10 seconds before playing a call back to Twain, she would in turn wait 10 seconds before responding, McCowan said. This type of interval matching suggests Twain was engaged in an intentional exchange, she added.
"It certainly felt like we had been heard," Sharpe told BI, emphasizing that their work is done with a permit from the National Marine Fisheries Service and readers should not try this at home (or sea). "And we hope that she felt the same way, too."
"We believe this is the first such communicative exchange between humans and humpback whales in the humpback 'language,'" McCowan said in a statement.
The calls came from humpback whales the researchers had recorded from a small group of whales just the day before their encounter. The group had included Twain, so it's possible Twain was responding to her own signal.
"We might've been playing back her own hello to her," Sharpe said.
So what does this have to do with talking to aliens?
Turns out, Twain's behavior could be akin to how intelligent alien races may seek humanity out, said Laurance Doyle, a principal investigator at the SETI Institute and coauthor on the paper.
Communicating with extraterrestrials
"An important assumption of the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is that extraterrestrials will be interested in making contact and so target human receivers," sort of like how Twain responded to the contact call from the scientists, Doyle said in a statement.
Doyle and his colleagues at SETI are working with whale and animal experts at UC Davis and the Alaska Whale Foundation to create intelligent filters to aid in their search for extraterrestrial intelligence.
If extraterrestrials are out there, sending us signals, trying to communicate, we might miss them if we don't know what to look for, Doyle told BI.
By perfecting these intelligent filters, scientists could use them to identify intelligent signals from space in an attempt to make first contact with an alien race.
"There are diverse intelligences on this planet, and by studying them, we can better understand what an alien intelligence might be like, because they're not going to be exactly like ours," McCowan said.
The research is also testing the idea of whether or not intelligent alien life would even seek us out, Doyle told BI.
"Whale research has indicated if you're intelligent, curiosity comes along with that, and you want to make contact," Doyle said.
The scientists said they hope similar work can be carried out with other intelligent animals on Earth, including other cetaceans like dolphins, carnivores that cooperate to hunt, and other highly social species like meerkats and elephants.
Dogs, antennas and honey for Japan's big bear problem
Today 05:46 am JST 21 Comments
By Simon Sturdee and Harumi Ozawa
KARUIZAWA, Nagano
Thousands of bears are being shot in Japan each year as they become more and more of a problem. Junpei Tanaka and his dog Rela, straining at her leash in the woods, have a kinder, smarter way.
People moving from rural areas and Japan's aging society -- plus climate change affecting bears' food and hibernation time -- are prompting ever more of the hungry animals to approach towns.
Reliable data is hard to find but bear numbers also appear to have rocketed, with one newspaper estimating they had roughly tripled in 11 years in some places. Sightings have almost doubled this year.
The increasing frequency of these powerful animals -- which in the case of brown bears can weigh half a ton and outrun a human -- coming into contact with people has created alarming headlines.
This year is on track to be the deadliest for humans since the government started collating data in 2006, with six people killed by bears, including one elderly woman in her garden in October.
The severed head of a fisherman was found by a lake in May. A bear was reportedly spotted with his waders dangling from its mouth.
Another 212 people, also a record, have been injured in attacks.
One bear attacked six people in a single day in October, including an 83-year-old woman and a schoolgirl waiting for a bus in the northern town of Kitaakita.
It's been far worse for the bears. On average over the past five years, 4,895 have been killed each year, according to figures from the Environment Ministry.
As of November 30, 6,287 have died in this fiscal year (to March), around 2,000 of them in November alone. Usually, they are shot.
"This year, it's expected to go as high as 8,000," said Tanaka, 50, a bear expert who works for the Picchio Wildlife Research Center.
This is prompting unease in a country -- three-quarters of it mountainous -- that thinks of itself as living in harmony with nature.
"For a long time, Japanese people co-existed with wild animals... They believed in the presence of gods in every kind of living thing and avoided unnecessary killing," Tanaka said.
"But now, it has become difficult to segregate the wild and human areas due to the change in environment, change in social structures and change in people's lifestyles," he said.
Tanaka says his project in Karuizawa, a town surrounded by woods in the shadow of a volcano 90 minutes from Tokyo by bullet train, is a "forerunner" of what can be done without resorting to killing the bears.
In the dead of night -- when the bears are most active -- Tanaka demonstrates the methods used by his organisation, which he says keeps both humans and bears safe.
He and his team set barrel traps, with honey inside, to capture any bears that start to lose their fear of humans. They are fitted with a radio collar and released, far away.
The town has also installed bear-proof rubbish collection points -- the slot for the door handle is too small for a paw -- and appealed to locals to be more aware.
But the key component in the non-lethal efforts is Tanaka's amber-eyed, keen-nosed canine Rela and the rest of the team of specially trained Karelian Bear Dogs, a sturdy and fearless breed originally from Finland.
"They are very reliable staff of the team. They are our colleagues," Tanaka tells AFP.
Picchio acquired Rela's mother from the Wind River Bear Institute in the United States, whose bear biologist founder Carrie Hunt has pioneered the use of dogs in bear control.
Heading out in his small van in the pre-dawn mist, Tanaka first waggles around a metre-long (three-foot) antenna to triangulate the location of any nearby bears fitted with a radio collar.
"You got the bear scent? Okay, let's go!" Tanaka says in English -- like all his commands -- to the dog.
He and Rela then head fearlessly out over the hill and once they find a bear -- unseen by AFP staying safely at a distance -- the dog emits a fierce bark and scares it away.
This "bear shepherding" method is unique in Japan, although other places are interested, said city official Masashi Tsuchiya.
"Bears are dangerous animals, so it is true that we did receive some voices from local residents that bears should be killed," Tsuchiya told AFP. "But thanks to the Picchio program, we have learned that we can control and monitor bears' behavioral patterns by identifying each individual animal, attaching a radio collar and pushing them away from the town."
Japan has two types of bears. Around Karuizawa they are all Asian black bears -- also known as moon bears -- and the bigger brown bears live on the northern island of Hokkaido.
Moon bears always live in forests and don't like being seen but brown bears, which are bigger, come out in the open. And while brown bears "bluff" attacks, moon bears do not.
"Most of the time they run away from humans. But once they get in trouble with a human and get into a panic, they attack," Tanaka said. "And they don't retreat."
Her husband came once with a monkey for his daughters, same like in the video but his fur was golden brown.he make all kind of sh1t... :jester:
when I visited this other "family" part and sleep there one or two days I was the monkey (don't remember his name)favorite
Because I play with him like a boy normally does (more "aggressive"/challenger )for him and he liked it...
Every time I sleep there he did one of this two things:
1- He begun to spring on me yelling like a fool to wake me up! I trow the pillows at him and he liked it more! because now he can play more with me... :target:
2- I woke up "normal" and he was cuddled with me and his soft little hand on my cheek ...:heart:
DES investigates as Queensland fisher describes 4-metre crocodile jumping into his boat on NYE
Monday 1 Jan 2024 at 11:17pm
A Queensland fisherman's ordeal of a crocodile leaping into his tinny with its "jaws wide open" has sparked a state government investigation and warning.
Mackay local Richard Brookman said the close call on New Year's Eve was "one to remember".
The 45-year-old said he had been fishing for about 4 hours in his 3-metre tinny up Jane Creek at St Helens Beach, an hour north of Mackay, on Sunday night.
At about 10pm he had "that eerie feeling that something was watching me".
"I turned the headlight on and had to look up the creek and there's these eyes coming straight for me."
The experienced fisherman said initially he was not afraid of the reptile, which he estimated to be at least 4 metres long, but that changed as it moved closer.
"It wasn't until they [the animal's eyes] actually got pretty much in line with me that I'd seen how big he actually really was, and I thought, 'Oh, I'm in trouble'," Mr Brookman said.
"He went up past me and then he swung out to the middle of the creek and then drifted back with the tide.
"I stood up to go back down to the back of the boat, then he went under and I thought, 'This is not going to end well'.
"Within a blink of an eye, he was on top of my boat, and it was sliding down towards me, jaws are open."
Mr Brookman said he had to jump over the crocodile to retrieve his anchor before the animal over-balanced and fell into the water, which he said caused the rails of the tinnie to bend.
He said he felt "numb" after the close call.
"It was just sort of sheer luck then that he slid out. I think my [late] grandfather was looking after me," Mr Brookman said.
The ordeal has left Mr Brookman shaken, scared and worried that a similar incident could happen to somebody else.
"Even now, I still see the flash of the croc going over the top of my boat, the boat going up on its side.
"It is a dangerous big animal and the only thing I can think of is if you've got a couple of kids in the boat — he's not scared of humans, he's not scared of boats and he could take anyone out."
Incident under investigation
The Department of Environment and Science (DES) is investigating the incident after speaking to the fisher.
"To launch themselves at a boat near a boat or at a person, it's not what we would call typical [crocodile] behaviour," senior wildlife officer Jane Burns said.
"It is concerning behaviour, so it is definitely getting investigated and we'll look further into this animal's behaviour."
She said incidents of crocodiles jumping into boats were usually accidental.
"When people are in very small, narrow stretches of creeks and there are animals on banks, it's just natural behaviour for them to try and get into the water as quick as possible and sometimes they will skip across a vessel or come very close to it, but they're simply trying to just get into the water," Ms Burns said.
But she said an animal of this size was unlikely to be afraid to approach a smaller boat.
"An animal would look at a smaller boat more as something to his size that he would feel comfortable to go up and investigate," Ms Burns said.
"So we definitely encourage people to choose a bit bigger boat when they're fishing in croc country."
She said while this animal was not previously known to the department, precautions had been taken.
"In this particular case, there has been recent warning signs put up at the boat ramp," Ms Burns said.
"That's the nearest point people will use to launch their boats into this body of water.
"Wildlife officers will go out into the creek to do a behavioural assessment during day and night hours.
"So we really just have to determine whether the animal is still there and whether it will be declared as a problem crocodile."
Calls for relocation
Mr Brookman said he wanted to see the crocodile relocated and raised the issue with Mirani MP Stephen Andrew, from One Nation.
Mr Andrew, who had previously called for a crocodile cull in north Queensland, alerted the department.
He supported calls to relocate the reptile.
"This is a dangerous thing. It's happening more and more in Queensland and they need to do something," Mr Andrew said.
"The reason I've got so much urgency on it is I know that a lot of people go and poach [crab] pots this time of year and they're even going at night-time."
The Utopian Stone has been in Nevada City since the 1970s. They proudly craft jewelry both custom and otherwise, and have been a presence on Broad Street for decades.
Last July 1, Denise and Marc Dyer — who run Utopian Stone under the ownership of Marc’s dad, Patrick — found themselves rescuing and essentially adopting a little House Sparrow bird, then just three days old, and named him Jack. Now, Jack has become the unofficial mascot of the jewelers.
“We were closed; it was a Saturday afternoon and some gal who is a friend of the family came in and said, ‘Denise you have to come outside right now,” Denise Dyer said. “So I walked out on the sidewalk and there were like two dozen people standing there looking at the ground so I walk out and there he is.”
An experienced bird owner, Dyer did what came naturally and tried to console the little aviary who had fallen from its nest.
“He was only three days old, around that age range—I was looking up how old he might be. He was buck naked but he didn’t seem to have any damage. He seemed to be okay and was breathing without stress. So I reached out and scooped him up and everybody looked at me like, what are you doing? I said I am going to rehabilitate him. So I grabbed him and brought him in here and of course I had to feed him.”
Denise wasn’t sure what her father-in-law, Patrick, would think. She was prepared to be told he couldn’t be in the shop. However, the story took a turn there.
“I was waiting for (Patrick) to tell me I had to take him home and then someone came in and was like, How’s Jack doing?” said Dyer. “(Patrick) looked at me and said, ‘it looks like we have a new mascot.’ He’s been here ever since. He goes to work every day in the cage. He’s part of our family. (Patrick) just loves Jack. He always wanted a canary in the shop and instead we got Jack.”
Dyer added that with the passing of her mother-in-law Diane, a bird lover herself, it became abundantly clear to the folks at Utopian Stone that maybe Jack’s purpose was to remind the family of Diane’s continued presence.
“I started feeding him and taking care of Jack and Pat (Dyer) saw that as maybe Diane’s presence,” Denise said.
The lifespan of a bird like Jack can vary, ranging from one to 20 years.
“Apparently they live in the wild a year and a half to three years, depending on predation, food, cold,” Dyer said. “But when they are kept like this they can live up to 20 years. We were always here when the rehabilitation place is closed. We had a rehabilitator finally catch us on the way out of the store. They can eat human food really well; they are one of the only birds who’s adapted and that’s why they can be around humans so much.”
She continued: “So we were standing outside of the shop and this lady was like, oh you have a bird! And she was looking at Jack and I said, yeah we’ve had him for a couple months and he is part of the family and she said, ‘that’s one lucky bird.’ I told her I was waiting for a rehabber to come and tell me I need to release him because he won’t make it.”
Much to Denise’s surprise, she was not told to give up Jack.
“The rehabilitator said no, you’ve already saved him, he is doing well, he looks very happy, he looks very comfortable and he is going to live a whole lot longer. So she gave me a number for a wild bird veterinarian.”
Dyer said that Jack’s sparse weight makes it easy for him to fly around the Nevada City shop and that it isn’t uncommon for him to nest in her hair and even land on customer’s shoulders. Of course, she said, precautions must be made to avoid the chance of Jack escaping out the door.
“He will fly over to me and fluff up my hair,” Dyer said. “I will be helping customers and he’ll fly away; you don’t even notice he left because he doesn’t weigh very much. I’ll be standing here with a rat’s nest, like ‘How can I help you?’ They’re like, can I talk to the guy over there. Finally one day I looked in the mirror and realized what was going on; he was nesting in my hair and then he’d leave and they’d just see a mess.”
It doesn’t escape Dyer and her family that Jack once had his own brood, one he never got to know very well. However it seems as though Jack struck gold when he was taken into Utopian Stone.
“When we first got him we would walk past Novak’s and his family was up top and they would talk back and forth,” said Dyer. “And then the crows came and cleared all the nest, they ate them all. So Jack was the only one that lived.”
“Some people don’t know he’s coming and he’s really super quiet and some people don’t like birds, but he’s a sweet little thing.”
Thank You Bill... :heart: I would not have thought to share Jack's story here...
Just a little disclaimer...
The young gal who wrote the story, got quite a lot of the details backwards, or outright wrong... And she was very late... But she captured the overall outline of what happened, and how we got Jack.
This is Jack, just being himself...
Jack found Georgie and Bella's water bowl, and decided he needed a bath....
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Oy3-p6Y1K4I
And Jack likes to "Help" with anything we are doing...
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ry03NNYMyS0
By the way, we eventually did run into a sparrow rehabilitator, and she loved Jack, and was happy we rescued him and gave him a forever home... Stating that most die young, for many reasons and Jack will have a longer life as a result of us wanting to care for him, which we are thrilled to do...
Great Eared Nightjar - Interesting (prehistoric looking) bird, also known as the dragon bird.
'The great eared nightjar (Lyncornis macrotis) is a species of nightjar in the family Caprimulgidae. It is found in southwest India and in parts of Southeast Asia. This very large nightjar has long barred wings, a barred tail and long ear-tufts which are often recumbent. It has a white throat band but has no white on its wings or on its tail.'
We have had to keep him in his cage more recently while downtown as he has been going to the floor, which is dangerous... But he is still happy and gets out when no one is around! And good news... A new sparrow family moved into the nest that his family had occupied before the crows ate them... So Jack has some new friends to talk to every day!
So they reached out to me and asked if I wanted to give these eggs a chance. By now they were quite old so I wasn't sure if they would hatch."
Crocodilians today are seen as quite a stable group evolutionary, not having changed too much overall since the time of the dinosaurs. This statement though does have some issues, not just in how it often glosses over how diverse the group is today, but also as to how different many of their relatives were in the past.
There are a ton of these animals to discuss, so I’ll be covering a ton more at a later date, but for the moment, I feel the need to discuss one of the most interesting of them all, being the fairly recently described Brachiosuchus, an animal that nearly went under the radar. I hope you enjoy.“
But I watched the video — which is fascinating — and it specifically explained that their light weight did NOT detonate the mines. It was their strong sense of smell that sought them out. :thumbsup:
The Therapeutic Benefits of a Cat’s Purr (https://vbvh.net/blog/the-therapeutic-benefits-of-a-cats-purr/)
Echoing the article from the veterinary hospital (:thumbsup:), this is from a book entitled "Catwatching" by Desmond Morris:
Why Does a Cat Purr?
The answer seems obvious enough. A purring cat is a contented cat. This surely must be true.
But it is not. Repeated observation has revealed that cats in great pain, injured, in labor, and even dying often purr loud and long (this I have experienced several times). These can hardly be called contented cats. It is true, of course, that contented cats do also purr, but contentment is by no means the sole condition for purring. A more precise explanation, which fits all cases, is that purring signals a friendly social mood, and it can be given as a signal to, say, a vet from an injured cat indicating the need for friendship, or as a signal to an owner, saying thank you for friendship given.
Purring first occurs when kittens are only a week old and its primary use is when they are being suckled by their mother. It acts as a signal to her that all is well and that the milk supply is successfully reaching its destination. She can lie there, listening to the grateful purrs, and know without looking up that nothing has gone amiss. She in turn purrs to her kittens as they feed, telling them that she too is in a relaxed, cooperative mood. The use of purring among adult cats (and between adult cats and humans) is almost certainly secondary and is derived from this primal parent-offspring context.
An important distinction between small cats, like our domestic species. and the big cats, like lions and tigers, is that the latter cannot purr properly. The tiger will greet you with a friendly "one-way purr" -- a sort of splutter -- but it cannot produce the two-way purr of the domestic cat, which makes its whirring noise not only with each outward breath (like the tiger), but also with each inward breath. The exhalation-inhalation rhythm of feline purring can be performed with the mouth firmly shut (or full of nipple), and may be continued effortlessly for hours on end if the conditions are right. In this respect small cats are one up on their giant relatives, but the big cats have another feature that compensates for it -- they can roar, which is something small cats can never do."
The purring cat reminds me of what Drunvalo wrote in The Ancient Secret of the Flower of Life. A race called the Hathor who have attained Christ consciousness use a circular breathing method for healing. The aborigines (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?122594-North-Sentinel-Island&p=1598501&highlight=aborigines#post1598501) use a similar method when playing the didgeridoo.
Salish peoples say "Crows are the Defenders. They are a People. "
Crows know how to fight. They attack larger animals in groups. They harass and worry their enemy into acting rashly. They are strategic, tactical, and calculating.
Crows are communal. They will aid other crows and direct them to foods. They enforce discipline within their groups. It is no accident that a group of crows is called a 'murder'. This is b/c they will execute their own when they transgress.
Let a human befriend one crow, and all crows are bonded to them.
Crows are a People.
The Salish also say that only those humans respected by Crow, may appeal to Raven for guidance.
Raven is the Wise Trickster. Raven is the pivot point upon which Wisdom balances with Folly. Universe provides Raven as commentary on Risk and Personal Growth for Humanity. When you entreaty Raven for guidance, you gain Wisdom by interpreting the answer.
I have a strange hobby or meditation - i like to feed wild parrots and sparrows.It started a year ago when i was homeless .i was always warming my ass in sunshine at certain spot after a cold night and always bought some extra bread to feed the birds.I always liked the parrots but sparrows won my heart. They got so used to me that they could spot me from very far distances and instantly come to me as soon as they spot me. It still amazes me and i try to pass by there once or twice a week just to see if birds still recognize me.Some still do :)
Sadly all my sparrow photos are on the other phone.No lack of pictures of parrots though
