Hello everyone.
My son Vincenzo and I have been living in a homeless shelter for going on two months to escape a domestic violence situation.
While the shelter has been a safe and stable place for us and I appreciate the help received by the wonderful staff here, the environment has not been good for our Vincenzo's health.
Vincenzo has been sick on and off since we've been here. He is 3, will be 4 in June, and has never been this sick in his life. Yesterday he was diagnosed with viral pneumonia. I do not know how long he has had it. About two weeks ago a doctor told me he thought Vincenzo had the flu. However, he never recovered and has been coughing heavily so his father had him seen by a naturopath yesterday.
The naturopath told them that she thinks the pneumonia is viral and won't respond to antibiotics, though she did prescribe them anyway in case she was wrong.
I will have him seen by a health care professional today and then buy him some natural remedies. I know that antibiotics are risky to take, I've had Candida problems for years after taking them myself so I want to avoid using them if possible.
There is a list of herbal remedies I would like to get for Vincenzo. They make be expensive, so I'm asking if anyone is willing or able to send donations. Any amount would be helpful.
Since we are in a homeless shelter and he will inevitably be exposed to other illnesses that will affect the speed of his recover, I have to give him a wide variety of remedies to strengthen his immune system as much as possible.
My PayPal account is rebeccastevens7492@gmail.com
Thank you,
Rebecca

Dear Rebecka, if there is any chance he has bacterial pneumonia please give him antibiotics. Give him some probiotics to mitigate negative effects, I think Lactobacillus acidophilus is the most important one.
I too have avoided giving my kids antibiotics, but sometimes it is necessary.

I will take him to another doctor today to see if he could have bacterial pneumonia. Yes, I definitely would give him probiotics with the antibiotics. I made the mistake of not doing that for my self when I took antibiotics.
Thank you for for the advice.

I second what Swan says 100%. While antibiotics are highly over prescribed, resulting in super-resistant bacteria, they nevertheless are a miracle of mdern medicine and have saved countless lives. In cases like this, you ABSOLUTELY need to give him some. People used to die all the time from pneumonia, especially children, and thanks to antibiotics, those numbers have been drastically reduced. Granted, we're going to be seeing more and more of an increase in deaths in the coming years due to antibiotics losing their efficacy, but again, this is because doctors give them out like candy for small ailments.
This is not a small ailment. Pneumonia is not to be trifled with, especially in children. It can spread fast and cause lung collapse. I had a close friend nearly die from one, and he works out 6 days a a week and is in peak health.
Go see a doctor, insist for a full exam. If they prescribe antibiotics, give them to him. Supplement with probiotic foods and pills once the treatment is over (doing it during the treatment is useless since most of the beneficial bacteria will be killed off).
It can't hurt to give probiotics during treatment, but I'm going to assume money is tight and every last pill/bite counts, so I would just keep most of what you have for after he's had his final dose.
I hope your situation improves soon. Good luck.

yes..my brother, a strong dude, had pneumonia and it took nearly everything he had to recover. i was shocked when he got it. one tends to think it's just a disease for the elderly.
the antibiotics pulled him out of the morass, and the supplements he took on the tail end of it gave him the strength to turn the corner. so i think a combination of the 2 is the wise approach(if possible)
i texted him and asked what he took, and he's just responded. this is how he ranked them in order of importance:
1) elderberry syrup
2) echinacea drops
3) garlic (which he left marinating all day in beef stocks)

Update:
I took Vincenzo to a clinic and got xrays done. It turns out he doesn't have pneumonia but he was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. It is viral and won't respond to antibiotics so I'll be using herbal remedies

Fortunately the X-rays showed the pneumonia tested negative and no antibiotics were prescribed. If I were to ever give antibiotics I would definitely give probiotics at the same time to prevent any issues with candida like I've experienced.
Thanks for the suggestions

I'll look into elderberry syrup. I just gave Vinnie an echinacea tea blend. I don't think I can get him to consume garlic but I was considering cutting it up and putting it in his socks overnight...

Hi Rebecca, I'm so sorry to hear Vinnie has gotten sick, glad to hear it isn't Pneumonia though.
I have had success with Olive Leaf Extract by Gaia Herbs or any GOOD company as well as Oregano Extract by the same company. I've had upper respiratory and intestinal infections and the OLE worked well for those. Oregano has helped with many things, especially with staphylococcus aureus which is famous for not responding to antibiotics - I also combined turpentine with it. Started working almost immediately where antibiotics did not help. Both are helpful with virus infections also.
High doses of vitamin C are also very good. There is a video of a man in New Zealand with pneumonia who was so ill the Drs thought he would die. His family INSISTED he get Vit C IV - long story there. Within a day he was doing better and eventually recovered. Many more stories of course.
Without access to IV Vit C lypospheric C is highly recommended, or a bulk package of the powder which is good, but might be problematic with a small child.
This link has videos (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=vitamin+c+pneumonia+new+zealand) about Vit C and infections.
All the above are helpful with viral infections also.
And baking soda to alkalinize the body!
Take care :flower:

Thank you for the suggestions, latte.
Yes, Vitamin C is wonderful. Mike Adams the 'Health Ranger' has said a lot of great things about it. The story about the man in New Zealand is phenomenal. Fortunately Vinnie likes mandarins and has been eating a lot of them lately. He also had been taking a multivitamin supplement which sources Vitamin C from cherries.
I will look into the Olive Leaf Extract and Oregano Extract. I've been reading that Oregano Oil isn't recommended for young children to ingest but I'll see if Oregano Extract is.
Thank you for the link.

I don't think Vinnie will be able to swallow the capsules. The liposomal c is something I'll look into. I've never heard of the liposomal type.

I've been reading that Oregano Oil isn't recommended for young children to ingest
Hi Rebecca
A great alternative to ingesting oregano oil is to take the oregano oil, dilute it with coconut oil (if you can get fractionated coconut oil, all the better) and then apply it to Vinnie's chest and the soles of his feet. His little body will absorb the oregano oil safely and you could also blend it with other essential oils that are great for the respiratory system, like eucalyptus and lemon.
Lemon juice. If you can get this freshly squeezed or buy a cheap squeezer for yourself, it will go a long way to getting his body back into balance (in a more alkalised state) and act as an expectorant.
The power of the lemon cannot be underestimated!
To make it more palatable for Vinnie, he can drink this heavily diluted with water throughout the day - but you might be surprised by how much he might enjoy it, even a tad more concentrated! (make sure you help him brush his teeth more often!)
Usually, I would also recommend a dehumidifier with drops of essential oil placed in it but it might not be appropriate if you are in a dorm-type situation.

Remember that there are natural substances that are antibiotics, when you think of needing antibiotics. For upper respiratory/flu, I have had a remarkable turnaround from deathly sick with the worst, hardest-hitting flu, in about 8 hours, taking oil of oregano capsules every few hours. Oil of oregano is the strongest plant-based antibiotic that I know of. You're wise to use a multiple-faceted approach and to immediately go after immune-building. Hope Vincenzo is feeling better soon.

Thanks Constance. I did get the oil of oregano and some virgin coconut oil to use as a carrier.
I used to make Vinnie green smoothies with lots of fresh lemon juice. He would drink three of these a day, sometimes more. Unfortunately he started to refuse them a couple of months ago. He tends to not want lemon water for whatever reason yet I could get him to drink about one or two lemon's worth of juice a day through smoothies.
I have thought of requesting the blender from his father's girlfriend and reintroducing the green smoothies back into his diet again.

The capsules are very small in the brand I recommended. I would be very, very careful in applying oregano oil topically as that stuff is very spicy, and will burn the skin as bad as a very hot chili pepper. You can take the capsules and put it in a spoon with something viscous like honey or yogurt so it can be swallowed whole without chewing, oatmeal might work, too.
For an adult, topical application may be fine, but a small child's skin is so much more sensitive.
Liposomal C has been emulsified, bonded with a fat, so it takes time to digest which greatly increases the amount the body can absorb as opposed to the water soluble C which mostly passes out of the body without doing it's work.

I was going to mix one drop of the oil with about a tablespoon of coconut oil. I've read that it can't be taken internally at all by children in vinnie's age group as he is just under 4.
Thanks for the information on the liposomal c.

His girlfriend has sent Vinnie $160 since we left through his father's PayPal account. Child support is something that I will have to address soon. You make a good point. I was being 'nice' by not trying to get it before, but he really does need to have a set financial plan for Vinnie established. He paid $400 for a naturopath to visit their house allegedly... But she misdiagnosed him and didn't even recommended specific remedies. She prescribed an antibiotic despite telling them he didn't need one since the condition was viral. So he paid out a lot of money for little results

Do you have any documentation that he really had a naturopath visit the home? Did you see the prescription for the antibiotic? That whole home visit thing seems a little off. Diagnosing viral pneumonia without doing a lung exray seems off to me as well. Why would a naturopath simply prescribe an antibiotic for viral pneumonia and not offer any other remedies that would be in the realm of naturopathy, At least something for comfort and an expectorant, maybe something to help his immune system. What he says may be legit, but there are red flags popping up. If you don't have documentation for the visit ask him for it.
By the way, I think you should mention that they have only provided you with 160.00 for the care of your son. I think that really speaks to the amount of concern he seems to have for him, 160.00 for 2 months knowing that you don't have a job or very little money seems pretty uncaring to me. At least he could have purchased groceries and items for your sons care.

Rebecca, as one who has been there and done that, you can be nice and still get what is due your mutual son, for his care. You don't have to be mean or manipulative as I have seen many women do, me not being one of them. I would never advise that.
But, I'm with peterpam. How do you know they spent that?
Ask for support through the court system, while you are going through the system. He has an obligation to help your son.

I have the records. Supposedly the naturopath recommended natural remedies but didn't say any specific ones and prescribed the antibiotics anyway. I was told they were going to do blood work later in the week but really he's too young for that as the doctor I took him to said.
Hia father did offer to have groceries sent to us in the beginning but I didn't want my location revealed and never replied. They have bought Vincenzo food 2-3 times.

I'm guessing a home visit on Easter must have been expensive with no insurance so I wouldn't be surprised if it really did cost that much.
I suppose I was worried I'd be accused of trying to get money off of them if I tried to get child support at this time.

So I've been using the following remedies:
Holy basil tea
Ginger tea
Echinacea extract
Silver
Elderberry syrup
Tea tree oil (topically)
Raw honey and virgin coconut oil added to the teas
Oil of oregano (topically)
Olive leaf extract
Red maca root
Lacuma fruit powder
I haven't found a lot or information on how much oil of oregano to use topically on young children so I've been using one drop (not dropperful) per teaspoon of coconut oil. When I do searches oregano essential oil comes up a lot.
I'm also going to introduce olive leaf extract today now that I've found out the proper dosage.
His cough has improved noticeably but he still has a lot of mucus running from his nose.

I found a natural way to get high doses of vitamin C. There is something called camu camu powder. A bag of 20 servings is $5 at my local grocery outlet. I'm grateful to live close to one. On teaspoon allegedly has 239 mg, 1180% of the daily value. Wow! And it's more affordable than many synthetic forms of vitamin C, at least from grocery outlet. It smells good too.
In addition it has phytochemicals and antioxidants, which you don't get with synthetic vitamin C.

Constance, how much oil of oregano do you think should be used topically? I've been using 1-3 drops (not dropperfuls). Do you think that is too little? It's hard to finding information on using it topically for children vinnie's age.

It depends on what you are using there Rebecca? If you are applying an oil that is less concentrated, 1-3 drops is okay. However, if you are using an essential oil, it is really potent stuff.
Here is a bit of a guide (https://theherbalacademy.com/essential-oil-terms/)
The essential oil is like the frozen juice concentrate. It needs to be diluted with a carrier oil the same way that the frozen juice needs to be diluted with water. Essential oils are diluted for several reasons—the most important of which is to prevent skin irritation or sensitization that can occur when essential oils are used in high concentrations.
In aromatherapy parlance, dilution refers to a ratio of the amount of the substance being diluted (the essential oil) to the substance diluting it (the carrier oil). With essential oils, this is usually given as the percentage of essential oil in the carrier. For instance, a 1% dilution means that there will be one drop of essential oil for every 99 drops of carrier, or 1 out of 100 drops total.

For instance, a 1% dilution means that there will be one drop of essential oil for every 99 drops of carrier, or 1 out of 100 drops total.
