"Above a certain altitude it doesn't matter whether you jump from 5,000 or 25,000 ft. About 12 seconds -- 2,316 feet -- after leaving the aircraft you'll reach terminal velocity, where air resistance equals gravitational pull. If you are in a stable belly-down position terminal velocity is ~120 mph; in a head-down position it's ~200 mph. The biggest difference is how hard it is to see the net from the higher altitude.

The most crucial part of the stunt is when he flips his position from belly-down to back-down. Done wrong or at the wrong time and it will introduce a lateral vector which will send him past the edge of the net"

A fly landed on a golf ball allowing it to fall into the hole.

Did a fly help this pro golfer sink an epic shot – and walk away with millions on the PGA Tour? The viral theory might seem far-fetched, but there’s a gnat-sized shot that there MIGHT be something to it! The viral putt is certainly making the rounds, in part due to the colorful commentary. The riveting clip posted by Sky Sports Golf has 3.6 million views on Instagram. It was also reshared on Reddit, where it racked up 18,000 upvotes, under the highly misleading title: “A golfer won more than $2 million thanks to a fly” The golfer in question is 34-year-old Tommy Fleetwood from the UK. He did, in fact, make the fortunate birdie during the final round of the BMW Championship, held in Maryland last week. The PGA’s 10-second rule boded well for Fleetwood. A player is allowed up to 10 seconds to see if a ball will fall into the cup, if it has come to a rest on the edge.

I honestly couldn't believe he did that. Records are there to be broken!

Yes, records are there to be broken, but my problem with highest score records in cricket is that the the quality of the opponent is not taken into consideration.

Scoring 400+ runs against Zimbabwe is not the same as Lara's 400 against England.

Limerick Teenager Wins National Title At Dublin Marathon Just Months After Running Debut

There were some magnificent scenes on the streets of the capital this morning, with 22,000 participants taking over the city for the 2025 Dublin Marathon. While there was no shortage of fantastic stories on the day, perhaps the greatest one of all belongs to a teenager from Limerick.

19-year old Ava Crean would claim the Irish women's national title on the day, finishing the race in a time of 2:34:12, with a sixth-placed overall finish.

While that is an incredible achievement in itself, it was it made all the more remarkable by her lack of experience in this event.

Ava Crean would knock a whopping nine minutes off her personal best in this race, although it must be said that her marathon experience had been fairly limited up to this point.

In fact, the Limerick woman would only run her first ever marathon earlier this year. It was her first ever competitive race in any distance, finishing in 2:49.

The Dublin Marathon is only her third ever race, with Crean now already having a national title to her name.

Ava Crean did not have a background in athletics, possessing a background in camogie and karate. She also took up basketball as a teenager and was called up to represent Ireland at U17 level.

Speaking after the race, she summed up just how much she enjoyed the occasion as a whole.

" I'm 19 and I've been training for Dublin for about four months. I did my first marathon this April in Manchester and then I did Limerick a week after that...

[The support in] Templeogue was amazing. I was throwing up my hands and I was like 'I might regret that later', but I didn't. "

The teenager also gave a decisive answer when asked how she would celebrate what is an amazing achievement.

Pizza, burgers, and donuts!

Cathal Dennehy wrote in the Irish Independent earlier this week that Ava Crean is now being coached by Limerick native John Kinsella, with a view towards competing in some of the world's biggest marathons over the coming years.

Considering the start she has made in the sport, the sky is the limit.

American extreme skier Jim Morrison has just skied down the Hornbein Couloir on the North Face of Everest. The only person ever to have attempted this before (Marco Siffredi, on a snowboard) died trying in 2002. His body was never found.

It's hard to overstate how extraordinarily dangerous a feat this was. National Geographic sponsored the whole thing, and will release a documentary about it. Meanwhile, their teaser trailer is below.

Morrison skied 3,650 vertical meters down the Hornbein Couloir and the Japanese Couloir below it, to the Rongbuk Glacier. He mentioned abominable conditions on the Hornbein, which is up to 60º steep. A rocky section below that forced him to rappel part of the way. The footage shows the true scale of the mountain and the vertiginous slopes.

NEW: 7-foot-9 Florida college basketball player Olivier Rioux becomes the tallest college basketball player in history by entering the Gators' game on Thursday.

Rioux entered the game for the Florida Gators' 104-64 win over North Florida.

The previous record was held by Kenny George and Mike Lanier, who were both 7-foot-7.

"It felt great. The support from everybody was amazing, even on the bench and even in the fans. Everybody supported me, and I’m very grateful," Rioux said.

PtibobLK56IFascinating! I found the notion of 'ritual' in fights like MMA to be really interesting. (It's 100% true, of course.) That's also present in geopolitical warfare, too, as in the very concept of 'illegal weapons'. I posted this here (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?114491-WW3-Ukraine-US-vs.-Donbass-Russia&p=1505282&viewfull=1#post1505282) on the WW3/Ukraine thread:
It's always seemed highly strange to me that there are such things in war as 'illegal weapons'.

Meaning, it's considered perfectly ethical and moral, and just absolutely perfectly happily fine, to kill someone in one way, but not in another. Someone might die an agonizing, drawn-out, traumatic and terrible lonely death in a trench, with a leg or an arm blown off through "legal" artillery fire. But a much quicker and more merciful death via (e.g.) a nerve toxin, or cyanide, is somehow considered "immoral".
Mashika (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/member.php?45714-Mashika), who fought in the Donbass military, strongly agreed. (https://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?114491-WW3-Ukraine-US-vs.-Donbass-Russia&p=1505285&viewfull=1#post1505285) I'll not copy her post here, but it's well worth reading. :flower:

It was an astonishing day of cricket :muscle: And thanks for finding a highlights package. There was all sort of criticism of the English batting, but, it wasn't that terrible actually. And of course the rule is: never judge a pitch until both sides have batted on it. Fabulous high quality bowling on both sides here. It'll be interesting to see how England fare next time of asking. If they've somehow fathomed out how best to treat the conditions and rein themselves in a little they could make a big score although the gen seems to be that either side making about 250 is par.

Some people don’t recognize motorsports as actual valid sports. A past summer job boss of mine was one. I disagree with that.

Two-wheeled motorsports have long been the black sheep of motorsports, probably because most people are scared of it. But everybody rides a bicycle, right? Makes no sense. As we see today, lots of people get on electric rental bicycles and ride unsafely fast. What gives?

Putting 2 vids up here, first is a classic movie from 1971 that inspired a lot of folks to go motorcycling or full out racing. Check out that vid’s comments for testimony to that. First mention of actor Steve McQueen is at about 32:45 or thereabouts. L = 1:28:39.

2nd vid is of a peculiar activity done by some folks in what is euphemistically called “the sandbox”. Back in the LiveLeak days, I used to see vids of them doing this on public highways, sometimes rolling over 😳. Difference here is, organizer of this has written a rule book for it, for how a proper safe ~sanctioned completion should be done. … I took some notes on that, because my minivan feels more tippy than my previous cars, turning as high speeds. Rollovers are brutal, and always wear your seatbelt.

Sailboat “Smuggler”, tenth place finisher coming into Hobart, Tasmania, in this year’s running of the ~24 hour race from Sydney.

Am posting this for the cool vid from a drone, which circles to catch all angles of the beautiful craft, and for the accompanying commentary by sailorgirl Nic Douglass from the motorboat seen formed up.

Near sunset, and there were many boats yet to arrive. This happened yesterday, in their timekeeping. Also, all those boats were sailing upside down, how crazy is that?!

How the Soap Box Derby Came To Be | Know Ohio

Get ready for a ride! Gabriel zips through the history of the All American Soap Box Derby and how Akron became the place to race.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daF-kxWkh7g[/url]

Here is the main story, about two young sisters who are gangbusters about this racing. From New York State, they both intend to qualify for entry in the championship race in July — Akron Ohio, what the vid above says.

Two pics in the article, grade 6 one tucked in and racing, grade 8 one standing with her gravity powered car. Am guessing which is which.

Local sisters compete at Soap Box Derby races

January 08, 2026

Eric Williams

These days when people hear the word “derby” mentioned in sports, they might think about the home run derby in baseball, a demolition derby with cars deliberately crashing into each other, or even a match between neighboring England soccer clubs which is called a derby. But there’s another classic one that some have forgotten about; the Soap Box Derby.

An official sanctioned event dating back to 1934, the Soap Box Derby is a gravity car race (the cars aren’t powered but simply coast downhill) for ages 7-13 (Stock division), 14-18 (Super Stock) and 18-20 (Masters). Its name originally derived from the use of wooden soap crates in the construction of the racers.

Soap Box Derby races continue to this day, with races held all around the country and the world championship annually held in Akron, Ohio.

Two sisters have been racing for years with the goal of becoming world champions. Adele and Maelyn Canale live in East Otto and are in eighth and sixth grade at Cattaraugus-Little Valley Central School. They participate in derby races to qualify for the world championship.

“So there’s two kinds of ways you can get into worlds,” Adele Canale explained. “The first one is by winning your local race. For us, it would be in Jamestown. If you get first place in your local race, then you can go. The second way is by doing rallies. You can go around to different races around the country. Every time you do a rally, depending on what place you get and how long you last you earn points. You have to have 600 points to go to the world championship.”

Maelyn Canale
Both girls have competed locally at Jamestown, and also list Boston, Mass. as one of their favorite places to race. Regular races usually have 20-24 racers competing, with over 300 hundred racers at the world championship. Each tournament has races split into heats, consisting of two to three racers going downhill against each other at a time.

“You start on a ramp, and there’s a metal stand that holds your car in place,” Adele Canale said. “And when they start the race, they drop the stands for both cars at the same exact time. You have to win your heat without going into the other person’s lane. After two heats, the person with the fastest collective time moves on. Tournaments are double elimination, so if you lose a race you go into a challenger’s bracket and keep racing.”

“It’s really hard to stay straight, because you go so fast that if you even just move the steering wheel like a tiny bit, even way less than an inch, the car can turn. And when you turn, it causes you to slow down a lot.”

For the sisters, the whole family helps as their pit crew.

“It’s actually a family thing,” mother Brooke Canale said. “So their dad will take the girls up the hill and set the cars on the ramps. You have to have an adult set them on the ramps because they’re in the car. And then I’m at the bottom of the hill, and when they race down, I’m the one that swaps wheels with the other car. If you’re going against one other person, we race twice, and swap wheels and lanes after the first race. So the wheels that you go down on stay in that lane, and you swap the cars so that no one has an advantage with the wheels.”

Races are highly regulated, with every car inspected before racing. “You and your car together have to weigh 200 pounds (for the Stock division),” Maelyn Canale said.

Both girls have qualified for the world championship in the past, with Adele Canale accumulating enough rally points, while Maelyn Canale won the Jamestown race.

“It was exciting to win,” Maelyn Canale said. “You get a trophy, a gift card and money to use towards worlds.”

“I really like racing and it’s fun traveling to places,” Adele Canale said. “You get to see and do a lot of different things.”

“And eat deep-fried Oreos at the concession stands!” Maelynn Canale added with a smile.

The sisters plan to race again this year with the goal of returning to the world championship in July.

Death on the Matterhorn: Why climbers underestimate the danger (28:25)
The Matterhorn is one of the world’s most famous mountains — and amongst the deadliest. Since it was first ascended in 1865, over 600 climbers have lost their lives on the peak.

Despite modern infrastructure and global awareness of the risks, tragedy strikes the Matterhorn again and again. This film asks why so many climbers misjudge the risks. Death on the Matterhorn follows mountain guide and head of rescue operations, Anjan Truffer, up to Solvay Bivouac — one of the mountain's high-altitude huts. It shows how Edith Lehner, warden of the nearby Hörnli Hut, lives with the losses. The crew also accompanies climber Meli Rüfenacht on her first ascent of the Matterhorn — one year after she herself witnessed a fatal fall.

This documentary takes a look beyond the physical risks that come with mountain climbing to explore the psychological toll. How do families cope with the sudden losses? How do rescue crews live with the constant exposure to death and trauma? And — with more climbers than ever attempting the ascent without proper preparation — what role is social media playing? Death on the Matterhorn examines both the pull and the perils of mountaineering — and comes with a clear warning: In the high alps, even the smallest mistake can end in death.
