As Jim Rickards pointed out, Powell was raising rates to normalize them, so in the next recession, he'd have room to lower them. Unfortunately, he didn't get to normal before he had to start lowering them again. I guess he realized it's better to prevent a recession than to cure one. As to Trump, well even though I support him, I have to admit he's a little on the dumb side. Powell has forgotten more than Trump will ever know about economics.
