Looking Back on Ricky Gervais' Most Shocking Golden Globes Moments
Author: Zach Seemayer
December 31, 2019

(Article from just before this year's G.G. show)
"Ricky Gervais is, without question, one of the most controversial Golden Globes hosts of all time, making jokes that offend the stars being honored, insult the organization behind the show, and generally turn the night into a polarizing roast.
So, for this year's ceremony, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association asked the acerbic comic to return for the fifth time, and they're already banking on his unpredictability to attract viewers. NBC's promo for the 77th annual Golden Globes even features Gervais spraying the cameras with champagne as a narrator promises, "As usual, we have no idea what he's going to do!"
Recently, Gervais sat down for an episode of The Graham Norton Show
AOovL3RAoTM
...and revealed that the producers really don't know what he's going to do. When Norton asked about whether they approve Gervais' script, the comic explained, "When I do [the show], I say, 'I'm gonna say what I want, I don't have to rehearse,' and they say, 'That's fine.' But I do have to tell a lawyer [the jokes] just before I go on."
"People ask, 'Why do you go to so much trouble to offend people?' and I say, 'It's no trouble. It's easy," Gervais added with a laugh.
In a statement released in November, announcing that he'd be returning for the fifth time as host, Gervais said it would be the last time, and implied that would make it an event to remember. "Once again, they've made me an offer I can’t refuse. But this is the very last time I’m doing this, which could make for a fun evening," he said, ominously.
So how insane could it really get? In preparation for Gervais' return, we're taking a look back at the most controversial, offensive, biting, often hilarious and downright brutal jokes from his four previous appearances, to get a good sense of what we have in store for the British comic's Golden Globes swan song.
Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank
2010
For the 67th Annual Golden Globes, Gervais was tapped to serve as host after the ceremony had gone unhosted for the previous six decades -- save for one year in 1995 when John Larroquette and Janine Turner became the show's first-ever hosts, after which the show went back to having no emcee for another 15 years.
Without any set expectations -- or an understanding of what was about to befall Hollywood on one of the industry's most fun evenings -- Gervais hit the stage and truly shocked the world with his brand of take-no-prisoners comedy.
Totally unafraid of mocking celebrities right to their face, Gervais brought the same kind of biting, often painfully awkward, fearless comedic sensibilities to the ceremony that he pioneered in his sitcoms The Office and Extras. And, honestly, a lot of people weren't down with it.
Gervais Kicks Things Off With Genital Humor
Gervais set the tone with his monologue, in which he mocked Hollywood's love for plastic surgery and made everyone think about his own anatomy.
"Looking at all the wonderful faces here today reminds me of the great work that’s been done this year -- by cosmetic surgeons," Gervais joked. "I've had some work done, too. I’ve had a penis reduction. Just got the one now. And it is very tiny. But then so are my hands, so when I’m holding it it looks pretty big."
He Pokes Fun at Anglina Jolie's Adoptions
“Actors aren’t just loved here in Hollywood, they are loved the world over. You could be in the third world and get a glimpse of a Hollywood star and it could make you feel a little bit better," Gervais said. "You could be a little Asian child with no possessions and no money. But you could see a picture of Angelina Jolie and you’d think, 'Mommy!'"
He Starts His Public Comedic Feud With Mel Gibson
One of Gervais' recurring targets of his harshest jokes during his multiple hosting gigs has been Mel Gibson -- who was famously arrested for a DUI in 2006, where he made anti-semitic comments to the arresting officer. Gibson was considered to be essentially a blacklisted pariah in 2010, but Gervais didn't miss a chance to get in some digs.
"I hope I haven’t offended anyone. It’s not my fault," Gervais said toward the end of the show, holding up his glass of beer. "I like a drink as much as the next man. Unless the next man is Mel Gibson."
Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank
2011
Despite some of the pushback from celebrities and concerns that Gervais' material as host was too raunchy or mean, he returned in 2011, and even said during his opening monologue, referring to the show's producers when they asked him back, "I warned 'em!" It was a warning that went unheeded -- and led to even more shocking one-liners that became ingrained in Golden Globes history.
Gervais Takes Aim at Scientology
If there's one Hollywood organization it's safe to say most public figures are wary of offending, it's the Church of Scientology. But that didn't stop Gervais from making jokes about the organization -- as well as a pointed joked about the rumors sexual orientations of several prominent actors, whom he left unnamed.
“Also not nominated, I Love You Phillip Morris. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay. So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then," Gervais quipped, adding, "My lawyers helped with that joke.”
He Takes On Charlie Sheen
In 2011, in the midst of Charlie Sheen's infamous "Winning/Tiger's Blood/Warlock" era, Gervais turned to reports of his behavior to lambaste the controversial sitcom star.
"It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking -- or, as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast." Gervais said. "Wow, so let’s get this straight, so what he did was, he picked up a porn star, paid her to have dinner with him, introduced her to his ex-wife -- as you do -- went to a hotel, got drunk, got naked, trashed the place while she was locked in a cupboard, and that was a Monday. What does he do New Year’s Eve?"
Gervais Mocks Hugh Hefner's Marriage
"Talking of the walking dead, congratulations to Hugh Hefner, who is getting married at age 84 to 24-year-old beauty Crystal Harris," Gervais said. "When asked why she was marrying him, she said, 'He lied about his age. He told me he was 94.'"
"Just don't look at it when you touch it," Gervais added, to audible groans of awkward discomfort from the audience.
He Rips Into The Tourist, Accuses HFPA of Taking Bribes
When The Tourist was nominated for three Golden Globes, despite being critically panned and generally dismissed, Gervais didn't miss an opportunity to both mock the film, it's stars -- Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie, both of whom earned Golden Globe noms themselves for their performances in the movie -- as well as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, claiming they nominated them just to have a chance to hang out with the famous stars.
"It was a big year for 3-D movies. Toy Story, Despicable Me, Tron. It seemed like everything this year was three-dimensional. Except the characters in The Tourist," Gervais siad. "I already feel bad about that joke. I tell you what, I’m jumping on the bandwagon, because I haven’t even seen The Tourist. Who has? But it must be good because it’s nominated, so shut up, OK?"
"And I’d like to crush this ridiculous rumor that the only reason The Tourist was nominated was so that the foreign press of could hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie," he added. "That was not the only reason -- they also accepted bribes."
He Goes After the Women of Sex In The City
"There were a lot of big films that didn’t get nominated this year. Nothing for Sex and the City 2. No, I was sure the Golden Globe for special effects would go to the team that airbrushed that poster. Great job," Gervais said. "Girls, we know how old you are. I saw one of you in an episode of Bonanza."
Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank
2012
Gervais returned for his third year in a row, and this time he was reportedly warned to tone down his offensive remarks -- which he seemed to take as a suggestion to simply insult stars who weren't actually in the room. Then, after seemingly getting bored of that, he began to go off-script -- or at least his promise to behave -- and really dug into the stars. However, this time around, most of them were seemingly prepared for the shock value, and the general audible gasps didn't resonate as loudly, and the jokes didn't land with as much punch. But not for lack of trying.
Gervais Goes After Royal Families, The Oscars and Eddie Murphy All At Once
The English comic has also used his platform at the Golden Globes to essentially trash the Golden Globes, or at least knock them down a peg. This time around, he did so with a decent comparison between the Royal Family and the Kardashian Family, and mocked Eddie Murphy's 2007 storm-off after losing the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
"For any of you who don't know, the Golden Globes are just like the Oscars, but without all that esteem," Gervais joked. "The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton: A bit louder, a bit trashier, a bit drunker and more easily bought -- allegedly. Nothing’s been proved."
"But who needs the Oscars? Not me. And not Eddie Murphy," Gervais continued. "He walked out on them. And good for him! But when the man who said 'yes' to Norbit says 'no' to you, you know you're in trouble."
He Pokes Fun at Natalie Portman's Decision to Be a Mom
Sometimes, Gervais' comments can just be flat-out insults. Other times, he uses bitter, biting irony to make self-effacing jokes intended to make him sound like a heartless monster. Although some didn't get that he was being ironic when he took a fake swipe at Natalie Portman starting her family.
"Last year, our next presenter won both the Golden Globe and the Oscar for her work in Black Swan. This year, she took some time out to have a baby. Consequently, she’s been nominated for nothing. Really pathetic," Gervais joked. "But she learned that valuable lesson you all already knew -- never put family first. Please welcome the very foolish Natalie Portman."
He Also Attacked Hollywood's Sweetheart Colin Firth
Everybody loves Colin Firth, and that's exactly why Gervais' over-the-top joke about Firth's secret dark side really worked -- as long as you understood the point of the gag.
“He's also swooned over by women. I don’t see it. Good luck to him. … What you don’t know about Colin Firth is he’s very racist. I mean, really nasty stuff. I’ve also seen him punch a little blind kitten," Gervais deadpanned. "Please welcome the evil Colin Firth."
His Off-the-Cuff Joke About Spanish Accents Gets Censored, Labeled as Racist
Gervais' low point, according to many critics, came when he seemingly mocked Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek, who were presenting at the show. The comic, who spent most of the night with a drink in his hand, was accused of making a racist remark, and because he dropped a swear in, most of the joke was censored anyway.
"They're probably very interesting," Gervais said. "I wouldn't know because I can't understand a f**king word they're saying."
Paul Drinkwater/NBCU Photo Bank
2016
After three years of the affable, charming and (mostly) friendly hosting antics from the incomparable duo of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey, the HFPA turned once more to the acidic wit of Gervais -- which had proven to be a ratings boon for the awards show in the past -- and the British comic came out swinging. His fourth time as host proved to perhaps be his most controversial, and it was met with the most outspoken push back from the celebs in the audience and in critics' reviews the next day.
Gervais Sets the Tone Right Off the Bat
The comedian kicked things off with exactly the kind of satirical abuse people expected, amped up to 11, telling the star-studded audience, "Shh. Shut up, you disgusting, pill-popping, sexually deviant scum."
Gervais Jokes About Caitlyn Jenner's Transition and a Fatal Car Accident
Six months before the 73rd Golden Globes aired in January 2016, Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world with a cover appearance and lengthy interview in Vanity Fair. The reveal came just a few months after Jenner was involved in a multi-car accident that resulted in the death of a 69-year-old woman. Prosecutors formally declined to press charges against Jenner in September 2015, but the high-profile news stories provided Gervais with the material for one of his most controversial jokes of the night.
"I'm going to be nice tonight. I’ve changed -- not as much as Bruce Jenner. Obviously. Now Caitlyn Jenner, of course," Gervais said. "What a year she’s had! She became a role model for trans-people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers. But you can’t have everything, can ya? Not at the same time."
He Makes Light of Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandal and Roman Polanski
"The excellent Spotlight has been nominated. Yeah. The Catholic Church are furious about the film as it exposes that 5 percent of all their priests have repeatedly molested children and been allowed to continue to work without punishment," Gervais explained. "Roman Polanski called it 'the best date movie ever.'"
Gervais Makes a Good Point About the Gender-Based Pay Gap In Hollywood
Around the time that Gervais hosted in 2016, calls to reform the disparity in pay between male and female actors had started to become a major issue being championed by some of the industry's biggest names. It makes his joke about the popularity of female-driven reboots all the more pointed and insightful.
"All-female remakes are the big thing. There’s a female remake of Ghostbusters. There’s going to be a female remake of Ocean’s 11," Gervais explained. "And this is brilliant for the studios because they get guaranteed box office results and they don’t have to spend too much money on the cast."
He Jokes About Using His Own Golden Globe as a Sex Toy
"Remember if you do win tonight, no one cares about that award as much as you do. Don’t get emotional, it’s embarrassing. That award is, no offense, worthless. It’s a bit of metal some nice old confused journalists wanted to give you in person so they could meet you and have a selfie with you, okay? That’s all it is!" Gervais said, "I've got three Golden Globes, myself. One's a doorstop, one I use to hit burglars with and one I keep by the bed to... doesn't matter why. It's mine! I won it fair and square. It's just the right shape and size... It's nothing."
"So, to be clear, that was a joke about me shoving a Golden Globe, that I won, up my a**. And they asked me to host four times!" he added.
He Makes Things Awkward for Matt Damon
One of the most audible gasps of the night came when Gervais brought Damon out as a presenter and introduced him as "The only person Ben Affleck hasn’t been unfaithful to."
He Finally Shares the Stage With Mel Gibson
After savaging Gibson multiple times during his times as host, Gervais finally had to share the stage with the controversial actor -- who was asked to come out and present a tribute to Mad Max: Fury Road, which was nominated for Best Picture.
"I’m in the awkward position of having to introduce him again. Listen, I’m sure it’s embarrassing for both of us. I blame NBC for this terrible situation. Mel blames…we know who Mel blames," Gervais said. "Listen, I still feel a bit bad for it. Mel’s forgotten all about it apparently, that’s what drinking does. I want to say something nice about Mel before he comes out. So: I’d rather have a drink with him in his hotel room tonight than with Bill Cosby."
Gervais will take the stage for his fifth and (supposedly) final time when the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards ceremony kicks off live coast-to-coast on NBC on Sunday, Jan. 5 from 5-8 p.m. PT/8-11 p.m. ET from The Beverly Hilton."

Agree these awards shows are as predictable as elections. The political bias is hardly tolerable. But Ricky Gervais makes is all tolerable. A laugh a minute because even though it is scripted by him, hopefully, he can say it without having to perform as a jokester, a comedian waiting for laughs. If you notice, he can say more in one paragraph and you find yourself laughing at multiple statements he just said. Very casually dropping the bombs.

Brilliant and savage from Ricky. This is front and centre mainstream now, and I really do wonder what dirt Gervais actually has on these freaks.
He dressed the truth in sarcasm and humour, which is probably the only safe way to do it. Or maybe not so safe - I hope he protects himself, he upset a lot of powerful people in that monologue. A most telling (and subtle) line for me was how he told them, upon receiving a reward "to thank your God" then get off the stage etc. Your god? Hmm indeed. I doubt he'd use that wording unless 'their god' happened to be a quite different god to the one we all know...

Ricky Gervais trivialising rape and paedophilia by turning them into punchlines serves to take the heat off certain individuals, watch Gervais read from the script, as the actors contort their well-trained expressions right on cue.
Okay people, places please. Lights, camera, action. Wheel out Gervais.... and the mewling herd gobbles it up as if they're witnessing something organic, whilst experts in human behaviour lay waste to their perception of reality.

historically the jester is the only one in the king's court who gets to tell the truth. it's because he is "below contempt". Gervais' art isn't in reading the cue cards or trivializing rape and pedophilia..it's in placing himself below contempt so he can properly pull off the jokes. besides, rape and pedophilia weren't the punchlines..the actors and directors and producers were the punchlines. you've missed the point entirely. you really think that guy from Apple was acting when called out on his Chinese sweatshops? have another look

You've touched upon what has been gnawing at me about his monologue. I get the feeling that it was and is a put-up job, for public consumption. What they hope to achieve by it is to have the public conclude that there is a movement afoot in the industry to clean house from the inside. I doubt that.

historically the jester is the only one in the king's court who gets to tell the truth. it's because he is "below contempt".
The jester gets his paycheck from the king and is there for more than just simple entertainment. The king, like J. Edgar Hoover, has a COINTEL file on all the the lesser members of court. It's the jester's job to take this information, and at the appointed time, humiliate, demean and degrade the court members in various ways, to keep them all under control, all for the king.
Victor Hugo illustrates how this works in his play Le roi s'amuse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_roi_s%27amuse), which was set to music when it became Verdi's opera Rigoletto.
fYDI6MWkCW8
One difference about how this is done in Hollywood. The king no longer sits visibly on the throne, but anonomously and quietly in a board room, where the jesters are summoned. Right now, Ricky Gervais is their favorite Rigoletto. And the mind control isn't just confined to the court room, but is broadcast internationally, for all those who tune in at the appointed hour for their programming.

right, but sometimes he makes fun of the king. and if the king is displeased, he is hung.
Gervais is doing a delicate dance here. i don't think any of us know exactly what kind of risk he is taking. sure, he has prepared material, but he's also riffing quite a bit as well (see the mel gibson bit from a few years ago)
perhaps, on the top of the pyramid, there is a "king" who enjoys seeing his underlings get roasted. it's very possible.
i'm not sure. recently we've seen Epstein get arrested; we're seeing R.Kelly about to go down. perhaps there is a benevolent group(s) on the inside that are making opportunities like this possible. perhaps they have enough leverage to let a guy like Gervais do his thing.
who knows? it can be examined in many different ways

I think you meant Weinstein (similar name, similar vile charachters, easy to confuse). Yes, he is certainly a high level soldier in the MKULTRA army of Hollywood. But expendable. But he's not the kiing. I don't think any of us know who the real king is. In medieval times, the king might have allowed a bit of humor at his expense, just to show he's a good sport, but whoever or whatever runs the MK-Ultra Program that is "Hollywood", don't ever mention their name. I doubt Ricky Gervais even know's who that is.
We all wonder who assassinated JFK and Lennon. Who did 911. Who runs the secret space program. Who is behind the crimes of big pharma.
We should also ask what people, or even, what entities, are behind Hollywood.
I don't know who. Or what. But here's my best guess:
http://projectcamelot.org/lang/en/anglo_saxon_mission_presentation_transcript_en.html
I have some other theories too, even flakier.
But what I do know is that Hollywood has replaced fire and brimstone Christianity as the principal device to shame and demean human beings and make them powerless. For instance, one of the many, many, message in the script's subtext: "So you think you are a good mom, raising good kids, getting them into college? Well, look at Felicity Huffman, she is making license plates in Singsing now. And you too, soccer mom, are equally vile and corrupt. You can't do much good on this earth, so just be a lowly being. So don't think you can be a do gooder and thwart out corporate will." Nothing like telling the human race they are worthless and powerless. It helps to create a power vacuum that will be filled by corporations, political warlords, and other strange entities. In ancient times, people turned to the light of the night skies to see their future in the stars: clear, bright, strong, reliable (Sirius always rises on schedule), beautiful. Now at night, people gaze is turned horizontal to the light of the screen also to watch the stars, the Hollywood stars: they shine brightly one moment, but then fall the next. And the Fall is not is not pretty, like a meteor shower. The stars fall into acts of depravity, addiction, religious and cult mania, overeating, crime, emotional instability and all sorts of ugliness that keep people tuned into TMZ and reading the Hollywood Reporter. But the story has been always been the same, the Fall is the story that illustrates how worthless the human individual is.

If you're a comedian and you have a large group of powerful people in front of you, and you are clear that some are pedo's and deviants, you can't just walk up to them with a wagging finger and announce their guilt with bellowing screams. You have to use jokes.
A good joke will be just silly and clever enough to elicit laughs, but just serious enough to make one seriously consider something. It's a wonderful way to broach almost any topic. It's linguistic magic.
Drift a little towards the silly and you might trivialize a serious topic; drift too far towards the serious and you risk offending or "outraging". It's an artful dance. Gervais is first and foremost a comedian and a performer. He was funny and he performed well. He walked the tightrope with aplomb. He did his job. As a wanna be comedian myself, that's how I judged his performance initially. I appreciated that he made many powerful people uncomfortable, but I never once suggested (or thought) that he had made any kind of dent in the top of the power structure, whatever one wishes to call that.
We see some whistleblowers die under very suspicious circumstances, and some are seemingly left free to do their work. The ones that die appear to cross an invisible line that very few can tag and label. We don't know where that line is exactly. I think Gervais occasionally flirts with lines like that. Perhaps not lines that will result in death or bodily harm, but maybe lines that would destroy his career

If there was ever a movie about how the entertainment industry pimps out it stars and celebrities to mind control the public, to control the ebb and flow of the world's psychic energy, to make human beings think they are powerless and helpless so that corporate power is everything, it was Norman Jewison's "Rollerball."

You do get to see the king, "Mr. Bartholomew", played by John Houseman. The jester here, is the game itself, Rollerball, which humiliates the players, showing them to be spectacular one moment, and then defeated and pathetic the next, to create a world of passive, compliant people who bend to the will of corporations. Mr. Bartholomew is more than just a entertainment mogul, but is a secret member of some Bilderberg like organization, hellbent on corporate power and killing the spirit of humanity. (Which is probably good for Dow-Jones ).

That was great, finally got around to watching it!
The more I've watched Joe Rogan and his comedian friends discussing it, the history and such, the more I appreciate what a fine art it really is, and how badly it's needed. Especially the ones that just don't give a f##k and can walk that tightrope like Mike alluded to.
If worse ever comes to worse, stand up comedy will likely be the last great bastion of free speech. Maybe even the last great hope.

"this past year we saw James corden play a fat pussy....and he was also in the movie Cats."
That was a great joke. No fat on it at all. I think half the audience missed it
And I appreciated his Leo DiCaprio joke too. Was great! I don't have any issue with older men dating younger women or older women dating younger men; my issue with Dicaprio is that he will *only exclusively date 22 year old supermodels*. There's something very bizarre if not pathological about that.
He was smiling and laughing outwardly but pretty uncomfortable inwardly. It was clear! He wanted the ground to swallow him up, im telling you.

If so, would the problem of the State (and others) attacking and limiting free speech be solved by each of us holding ourselves out as stand up comics? Or would the State determine who is and who is not a stand up comic? He asks rhetorically.

Good question Satori!
Personally, I might see such a scenario as most average working class people are living lives of quiet desperation, scared stiff of losing their dead end paycheck to paycheck job by rocking the boat, and operating on auto pilot from their daily indoctrinations courtesy the evening news.
Maybe the "don't give a f##k" stand up comic they come across online somewhere, re-ignites that long lost spark of individuality and rebellion that many of us are born with. Before it is summarily squashed....

As with everything, this kind of rhetoric ─ meaning: what Ricky Gervais did ─ is merely a tool, and a tool can always be used for the better or for worse. The caricature of a jester who exposes the dirt on others has for instance been (ab)used by Nigel Farage every time he addressed the European Commission.
As someone who lives within the European Union and who agrees with the concept of a united Europe but not with the way the EU is being run, I personally took pleasure in the veiled and not-so-veiled insults that Farage used to hurtle at former EU president Herman Van Rompuy, who had abandoned his position as (unelected) Belgian Federal Prime Minister in order to become President of the European Union as a nice pre-retirement move in his political career.
Yet, Nigel Farage was more than simply a court jester. He is a British-nationalist and a xenophobe, and he was crucial in orchestrating the apparent grassroots decision of the British people to leave the European Union, exactly because he used this kind of court-jester-like dark humor as a populist tool. If one understands that populism is in itself not the support for a grassroots movement but rather the hijacking thereof, then it is easy enough to see how there could be a very dark side to being a court jester ─ as Mike already illustrated by pointing out that the medieval court jester's job was really to expose the dirt on the King's associates.
The bottom line is that what Ricky Gervais did ─ which in his case was of course closer in significance to the role of the medieval court jesters than to what people like Nigel Farage are doing ─ is a double-sided blade. It can be used for exposing hypocrisy, but it can also be used for mass manipulation, exactly because humor is generally appreciated by everyone, and because as designated underdogs, court jesters tend to easily amass sympathy from the public, and therefore hold a lot of sway. And buyer beware if the court jester happens to be a narcissist in disguise ─ as many of them tend to be.
Just something to think about.. ;)

Gervais isn't trying to be a hero. He's more like an anti-hero. actually, he's more closer to being a heyoka, or sacred clown.
he's not really on anyone's team. he just inserts himself into situations where he feels he is needed. sometimes he plays the fool, sometimes the jester, sometimes the social critic, etc. Whatever he feels is required. the heyoka is often a deliberate contrarian.
is it possible he is hired at times precisely to exploit all these things? sure. but don't suppose for a moment he doesn't know it. does he care? likely not. it's not his job to care, it's his job to perform.
but contrary to Maugins post there, Gervais isn't there to deflect the onslaught of exposure; he's there to amplify it. i s'pose the psychology there is that to joke openly and receive some laughs makes all the horrors cutesy and normalized or some such thing. perhaps there is some risk in that happening, but the greater risk is in staying silent. we have to use every opportunity we can to reinforce these messages, even if the method of communication isn't always perfect.
leave it up to the alternative community to whine and complain when a mainstream guy is saying very controversial things at a very mainstream event. we've been begging for it for years, and now that it's happened, we quickly find ways to slam it. why? because it's easier to play the oppressed victim that way. we don't know how to be winners, so we revert back to our old familiar mentality - the cynical loser. i can't listen to randy maugins. i quickly tire of his pretentious attitude towards pretentiousness. no one is ever right besides randy.

I actually agree with much of what Mr Maugans has to say. But not his message.
Everything coming out of Hollywood is scripted, planned, and calculated. Everything, every inch of the visible screen and every second of the recorded sound. To say Gervais' monologue was a surprise to the producers is laughable, inconceivable.
When Nikola Tesla began building Wardenclyffe Tower in 1901, the educated world already knew he was a star. When the rich old white men financing the project came to see it, they realized they had not a star, but a supernova wild card on their hands. Light up the White City of Chicago? This guy can light up the whole state, the entire country! For peanuts on the dollar! Naturally, they panicked, stole everything he had, and ruined his life.
For the next hundred years, they could rest easy, knowing very, very few citizens understood they had become literal slaves to this relatively small coterie of Satanists (yeah, I know its a 'freaky' word to use). Then, in 2001, they got impatient, arrogant, and brought down the Towers. Just as the controlled narrative, with all its holes, served to contain the initial perception of an 'inside job', it also served to awaken a lot of people. I am drawing a parallel here.
It was only a few years ago this monologue would have landed this person in jail. I attended the concert where George Carlin got arrested for public indecency. Although it is the one and only time I ever heard another human say it, I can to this day spout off the 7 Words You Can't Say On Television. The Siegel-Schwall Blues Band saved his ass from serious legal trouble. Times are changing and it is an exciting time to be alive.
The Normies are decent people; it is not their fault they have been hammered over the head since birth by the evil TV/Movie/Media juggernaut that convinces them war and wealth inequality is normal and the way things should be. Despite the fact that it is our present reality, it is not normal and not the way things should be. And here we are talking about paradigm-changing. Inch by inch, person by person, people are waking up and it is a process. Those reading these words on this website are already ahead of the curve in some way, and by varying degrees. Remember, the average man on the street does not know who the Rothschilds are. As one astute member put it, never underestimate the stupidity of the masses.
Was this the event where Gervais 'made his bones', so he could join the likes of Geffen, DeNiro, and the rest of their ankle-biting friends? I don't know. Maybe. The description of a 'double-edged sword' is worth heeding. Here's what I am not buying: the reactions of those in the audience were scripted, designed to bring TV viewers 'into the fold'. Yes, most of those people were actors, whose only actual skill is pretending. Yes, a few were probably told previously to 'act' a certain way. But not Tom Hanks. And not those around him. Not buying it.
Here is how I read Maugans' message: Oh man, we are f-cked. Maugans knows what he is talking about and we don't. We are screwed, its no use. We may as well just give up.
No. It is a process. It is step by step. And I see this as a step in the right direction.

I am curious, but imagine the boardroom meeting to appoint Gervais for the 5th time..
"Right shall we use Ricky again this year? The public are switching off in droves. They're not going to the movies, the studios are being outed, losing money, egos are getting bigger, and the press arent giving the column inches to the industry. I think we need to prove to our sponsors that the GG awards can get publicity for the industry!
What if, we try and turn some of this around and let Ricky do what he does best, lets give him a brief which allows him to rip the piss and make us look good that we the paymasters acknowledge whats going on, but if we allow a comedian to make fun of us all, it will get publicity. Afterall, think of the coverage we'll get?
It's perfect. Controversy gets publicity, outrage, engagement column inches, likes, discussions, shares - exposure of our gitzy event. All publiciity is good publicity for keeping the industry at the forefront of the public's mind letting them think we know whats going on, we not hiding it, we allowing Ricky to remind the public that we know too.
Afterall, it's only the bad eggs that will get pointed out - and we can laugh at our imperfections cant we? We're bigger than all that? aren't we - can't we rise above and look down and laugh, shaking our heads not believing that he actually followed the script legal signed off on.
But we'll sit in the control room pissing ourselves laughing, high fiving and doing lines of coke snorting ourselves into oblivion amazed that he manages to pull of the objective of the GG awards - EXPOSURE & PUBLICITY of OUR INDUSTRY event including the bad apples.
Oh, but wait - NOTHING HAPPENS until he is cleared by legal BEFORE he goes on. For we as the publisher and broadcaster dont want sued, our stock is valuable and will rise with all the press attention and social media attention as we prove to be THE AWARDS CEREMONY that represents the industry. And if he roasts us (us too?), then perfect - it wont look as tho we're f*****g with the public, and that we really are in control. We gonnae create a win/win/win.
If he does a good job - we win.
If the press or audience hate him - they hate him, not us (cos he'll rehearse the script to hell n back) - we win.
If the public like or hate him - we win, who cares, they're talking about Awards ceremony and $$$$ and sponsorship will be even bigger next year.
You in? I say yes - Raise your hand if you're with me, and I'll get Ricky's agent on the phone now.
Believe me guys it's perfect and another thing - I'll make sure we get 30 days to pay on his invoice after the event "

Absolutely, Scotslad. You've hit a hole-in-one there pal.
I was 50/50 about this until I read/listened to the Gervais interview yesterday where he stated that he had free-reign with regard to his script and their (FPA) lawyers only checked it before he went on stage.
Folliewood may be a cess-pit of depravity, but they aren't stupid, far from it. Not a chance on earth that they'd intentionally let the fox into the hen-house at night.

He makes me laugh. You can call a joke establishing a paradigm then suddenly reversing it, foiling expectation and causing the nervous reaction of laughter, or you can just call it funny.
The PTB don't understand the heyoka and why every tribe needs one. I figure he is good for ratings, that's why they hire him year after year.
I watched him on Netflix last night and split a gut. Watched his Golden Globes master of ceremonies routines and laughed my ass off.

Ricky Gervais trivialising rape and paedophilia by turning them into punchlines serves to take the heat off certain individuals, watch Gervais read from the script, as the actors contort their well-trained expressions right on cue.
Okay people, places please. Lights, camera, action. Wheel out Gervais.... and the mewling herd gobbles it up as if they're witnessing something organic, whilst experts in human behaviour lay waste to their perception of reality.
..and cue the applause.
You've touched upon what has been gnawing at me about his monologue. I get the feeling that it was and is a put-up job, for public consumption. What they hope to achieve by it is to have the public conclude that there is a movement afoot in the industry to clean house from the inside. I doubt that.
Indeed, and so it goes, the never-ending show of specious bunkum, honed to near perfection, and sold as the staple diet.

His remarks make a difference, huge ones and people remember, due to comic framing.
He was the real power in the room. He was judge, jury and executioner, without lifting a finger. He also took on the painfully politically correct, also part of the Zeitgeist, for a damned good thrashing. So, so refreshing.

Ricky Gervais NUKED Hollywood Liberal Elites From Orbit And They Are NOT Happy About It:

Ricky Gervais NUKED Hollywood Liberal Elites From Orbit And They Are NOT Happy About It. Several weeks ago Ricky Gervais made some jokes on twitter. This led to a leftist outrage campaign and an attempt to "cancel" Ricky Gervais. They wanted him fired from hosting the Golden Globes. However it did not work and Ricky said he would double down the more they got angry. Last night Ricky tore into the hollywood liberal elites, mocking them for their faux woke outrage and fake politics. He grilled them for having no real idea how the real world works. Many woke journalists and celebrities were angry, some scowled, but many laughed and accepted it. The light at the end of the tunnel is that although this was Ricky's last year hosting the Golden Globes he has show Hollywood and the media that pushing back on woke outrage can be lucrative. Your business will survive, your ratings will go up, and the controversy only has power if you give it power. Good news for all of us freedom loving individuals.

Ricky Gervais Jumps To Rank #1 After EPIC SLAM Of Faux Woke Hollywood Leftists.
Everyone is raving about Ricky Gervais' epic performance at the Golden Globes, that is except some woke leftists who grumble into the wind. But new charts were released tracking the rankings of TV shows and personalities in Hollywood with Ricky gervais jumping twenty three positions to the NUMBER ONE Position for an actor and jumping 7 positions to the top comedian as well. Gervais created a unifying moment for Americans on both the left and the right, democrat or republican, liberal or conservative. He showed that the woke outrage does not represent American not only with the massive press but also viral tweets one of which got over 100,000 retweets and 350,000 likes. As more people start to realize that hollywood's leftist elites pushing a fringe ideology and that there is a market for mocking those of "privilege" more companies and personalities will fall in line and perhaps then Democrats will stop playing this game and get back to sanity. While it may be apocryphal I think the quote "Republicans buy shoes too" is apt here. It doesn't just mean there is money to be made but that the people in elite privileged circles should try to represent everyone, not just their own interests.

Please stop, Exomatrix. Stop with all the videos, stop with the left/right crap. Just stop...
Calling: exposing MSM & Hollywood hypocrisy just "left-right crap" and demanding me to be quiet (silent) about it, is just a lame excuse not to deal with (or face) reality! ... as I m 100% Dutch (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?109653-Wim-Hof-This-Will-Revolutionize-Our-Future-&p=1331177&viewfull=1#post1331177) (born & raised), I have no vested interest in US left nor right "crap" anyway.
Any "voice of reason" no matter what party, will probably be sold as a "thought crime" or flagged as "hate speech (http://projectavalon.net/forum4/showthread.php?108958-They-re-not-blocking-hate-speech-.-They-re-blocking-speech-they-hate.)" by (Deep State Controlled A.I. Censor Algorithms) Mainstream Media MSM, Hollywood & Biggest Social Media Platforms!
Dems are not seemingly pushing a "politically correct" agenda they are pushing a "politically insane" agenda (committing mass political suicide) ... Liberals were originally the real defenders of free speech (that is how I was raised by my Liberal father & mother), now they allow themselves to be ruled (dominated) by the far left dictating & pushing authoritarianism & technocratic censorship tyranny.
I understand why most say: "crazy (or totally insane) statements & claims made up by Dems" ... better to say: "totally unsubstantiated statements/claims" or "baseless parroted misrepresentations" or "very deceptive talking points pushed by copy cats" or "framing & repeating a big lies hoping that if said often enough, SOME think it 'must' be real" etc. etc.
Impeachment Nothing Burger Circus 2019 use the same tactics as with 3 years of RussiaGate with NO accountability for selling chronically false accusations whatsoever ... and even if it is/was a (partially) "something burger" circus, the hypocrisy is harrowing, most (if not all) what the Dems accuses the others of doing they did worse and do NOT want to talk or think about that fact ... meanwhile (Deep State Liberal part of) MSM loves to play the dumb part of all if this keeping the masses systematically in the dark & ignorant.
My Dutch perspectives on "US Polit(r)icks": Both Left & Right "Centrists" are mostly Collectivists supporting Statism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6uVV2Dcqt0) which is ALSO a problem but on a different level! ... And the "Extreme" Right & Extreme Left are for Authoritarianism pushing very narrow minded Tyranny ... Whatever happens, it is mainly all about "control" that most KNOW is not accepted by all but they do not tolerate it anymore and visa versa for all who do not tolerate intolerance.

I basically agree with that idea, except I wouldn't say ALL liberals, nor would I say that this is ALL there is to liberalism. I would say it is a version of liberalism that is being corrupted by main stream media, false flag events, and that natural course of events that occurs as we move into being a technologically advanced society. Some people are buying into a corrupted version of Liberalism and being energized by it. But not everyone.
But the exact same phenomena is just as equally true for Conservatism. There is a more humanitarian version and one that is being corrupted.
Having been around both conservatives and liberals, I would say both realms of thought have a real vision for humanity at there core and an essential integrity. At the same time, both "isms" are being manipulated. When you bash one of these "isms", you can be seen as bashing the part of that "ism" that is still has integrity and vision, and you are bashing some people who may feel they fall under that umbrella but really aren't embracing the ideas you attribute to it.
What we really need is a more nuanced vision of these two ideologies which show how each has been corrupted.
And because there are so many people on the forum from the U.S.A. (including myself), what we could really use here is information about how these same agendas are playing out in other parts of the world, we need to hear about what is happening in other backyards. Some people are interested in the customs, cuisines, dances, etc. of other nations. I am really interested in learning about the mind control techniques practiced around the world, not just here in my own backyard. :sun:
